Simple question for you.... would this work for 4 quarters if Chiefs O-Line was healthy? And if the answer is yes? Then aren't the Chiefs doomed forever moving forward? As a Chiefs fan of 35 years, I've watched every Mahomes game at least twice. I've NEVER seen their O-Line get manhandled like that. In fact, quite the opposite. I just can't believe moving forward that this defensive game plan works this well ever again if the O-Line is healthy. Tiny nugget that NOBODY (haven't seen one national media person discuss it - not before or after the SB)... Chiefs are 26-1 the past 2 seasons (including playoffs) when Eric Fisher starts. They are now 5-6 when he doesn't. Mitch Schwartz (who might never be the same again if his back starts becoming an issue) is so underrated at RT. It's asinine to not acknowledge just how important to the Chiefs offense those two guys are. Mike Remmers (you know - the guy who helped give Von Miller - a guy that Schwartz has handled his entire time in KC - the SB MVP when Remmers was with the Panthers) was taking his first snap of the season at LT in the SB. It is the NFL equivalent of taking your 10th or 11th man on your bench and saying "You get to cover Lebron 1 on 1 in the most important game of the season". Yeah... good luck. Again... Bucs front four is insanely talented, and were healthy. No doubt they would have made it difficult on Mahomes and Chiefs to light it up. But not a chance in hell that with a healthy O-Line, the Chiefs don't score a couple of TD's. History has shown this. 54 games into Mahomes Career and it's the first time with a 3rd or 4th string LT playing in the SB before Mahomes is held out of the endzone. And the bottom line is Reid never adjusted. His ego kept him from taking what Bucs were giving, which was the run game. CEH could have and would have ran for 175+ yards had Reid stuck to run (see Manning led Colts against Bears in SB). But Reid refused. Simply refused to get out of his own way. AND there is the fact that I think Brady could have dropped 50 on that Chiefs defense had he needed or wanted to. But on the flip side.... if Chiefs are running, the defense (and Brady) is on the field less, and if game was closer, or more of a battle, Brady might have not been as comfortable. But after the Frank Clark sack, Brady was never touched again. They never made him nervous. It was an all out ass whoopin'. And Bowles game plan was perfect and perfectly executed. But lets not pretend that Mahomes and his weapons ever stood a chance with that O-Line & Reids unwillingness to adjust. Quite sad and as you stated.... embarrassing.
It’s much easier when you’re playing against essentially a second string offensive line. I don’t know of any team that wouldn’t experience a huge drop off in protection with both tackles out and backups in the middle. I certainly credit Tampa, they went cover two and expected they could apply pressure with a four-man rush and they did. Great game plan and they executed it. Chiefs lost composure and weren’t disciplined. Congratulations to Tampa, not sure why so much trash talking after the fact.
@@cairnman100 huh a team losing production with two starting tackles our? Both SBs against the Rams (holding that Warner led team to 17 was a big accomplishment) or the Bills dominant offence to 19 on the Giants-Bills SB is also more impressive than bullying an OL with 4/5 starters out

Right next to a photo of the 4 guys who started on Chiefs O-Line who are ALL very unlikely to ever start a game for the Chiefs (or any contending NFL team) ever again. Seriously dissect everybody but Reiter at Center (who will probably be Chiefs starting Center next year as well) and find me one current NFL team that they would start a single game for said team. There isn't one. Chiefs were down to the 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9th guys on pre-season depth chart. Two backup guards starting at LT and RT against the best front 4 in the NFL. Reid damn near should be fired for being arrogant enough to think those guys could protect well enough to run his normal game plan. And they knew for 2 weeks that those 5 guys would start. So they had 2 weeks to come up with an adjusted game plan (and for the first time in 7 weeks had a 100% healthy Clyde at RB).... and he just said "nah.... we're good".
@@damoncallaway5450 I'm over it and clearly Veach/Reid were done with those guys impacting any future Chiefs games & Mahomes as well. Gruden's familiarity with the Raiders offense made it easier but the outcome of that game wasn't going to be different regardless of whose offense the Raiders ran.
I think the thing that impresses me the most is his willingness to move away from his defensive identity that he's spent his whole career working on and refining. Some coaches are too proud to move away from their style and end up paying the price for it, which the Bucs may well have done if they stuck to the single high safety looks (although they may not have done, rushing 5 because that O-Line looked like they couldn't stop a beach ball with a wall when the Bucs only rushed 4). I'm hoping we get a rematch of these 2 in next year's Super Bowl because I want to see how Reid & Mahomes adjust and I do think the Bucs just woke up a monster because Mahomes won't let this go. I fully expect to see an even more deadly Mahomes next year.
The 1990 Giants also changed their defensive “DNA” just for Super Bowl 25 vs the Bills. They played nickel and dime virtually the entire game with mostly just 2 defensive linemen. The Bills never really adjusted. This Bills team had scored 95 points in the prior 2 playoff games, but offensively scored just 17 points vs Belichick’s Hall of Fame worthy defensive gameplan.
Hands down the single best analysis of the game I've seen. Pretty much, as you said, everyone else pointed to Tom Brady and his 7th ring, but this game was won by Todd Bowles and the Tampa D. You understood that and broke it down beautifully! Thank you for this!
@Khoa Nguyen But everyone expected that. Everyone expected kind of a 31-28 game or a 38-35 game. It was the Buc defense shutting down KC which turned this into a blowout.
I was an all-conference guard in high school, so I know how tough it is once a good defense realizes half your o-line is basically made of plus-size mannequins. XD

@@supportlid The chiefs game plan worked, just in this video alone there were 3 tds left on the board due to bad o-line play. In other words, Bowles learned from his mistakes and changed the game plan to fit the situation. Andy reid for all his genius should've have seen this coming. Also Chiefs, missing 2 best o-lineman, a coach, and multiple defensive players, and Patrick Mahomes had foot injury. Plus questionable officiating. I think Reid was outcoached too, but the circumstance were completely unfair against the Chiefs, and everything was perfect for the Bucs. If Reid would have countered with a traditional run heavy scheme that would have eventually taken TB out of that 2/3 high safety look. Stick a FB w/ some power running schemes and it would have been effective. Regardless, great defensive game plan by TB and great video. Thanks
@@ChefofWar33 That is correct but they would have had a better chance of being competitive. Regardless, brilliant game plan by the Bucs D - hats off to them but Reid could have made better adjustments to counter the 2/3 high safety looks. That's my point.
@@creamfalcon Yeah Reid could have but that would have meant Reid going totally against what his mentality is and that's to throw the football. Even in Philly he had a great defense yet Reid still threw the football way more than he ran it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs didn't use a fullback all season? This new to the NFL 3-3--5 with three high safety's that Phil Snow brought to NFL with the Carolina Panthers hopefully will force these spread offenses to play more traditional smashmouth football?! And the return or fullbacks and Sam linebackers! I think the three high safety look will be copied by every defensive coordinator and I think it's a game changer!

Great play by play analysis. As someone who grew up watching Australian Rules Football the route running is probably the most unnatural aspect of American Football to wrap my head around during the games. Being broken down like this and discussing each contest between offense/defense is an eye opener. Thank you very much.
@@SNESmapper no one really saw it coming then either, but we really should pay attention to the history of those kinda games. 9/10 times a great defense will shut down a great offense. 2000 Ravens, 2002 Bucs, 2015 Broncos, and 2013 Seahawks (I still think they're the weakest of this group; also not including the 1985 Bears since the Pats were hardly a great offense, not including the '72 or '73 Dolphins for the same reason) are the best examples of this.
Nah last time before this SB was probably the ‘13 Hawks. They came into SB 48 as underdogs against the *GREATEST* offense in NFL history. And they completely shut them down. Bowles defense is a blueprint to beat mahomes but the key is you must get pressure on the QB.not every team can get that kind of pressure but it was a perfect storm w/ KC being weak on the O line.
Thanks! This is an awesome breakdown. Tons of knowledge, learned a lot. We have a saying in rugby, forwards win matches, backs choose by how much. I like to think that in football, defense wins matches, the QB chooses by how much.
I was really surprised at the chiefs gameplan. They called a lot of deep concepts considering how banged up their o-line was, and the fact that everyone knew Tampa would go to a more of a two deep safety look.
KC trusted that they were good enough at what they did best/their identity (having an explosive offense) to overcome their weakness (Oline) but Bowles/the Buccs defense was completely prepared for it.
@@navonmyhand7999 I’ll give you that, but they kind of came with the quick passes and Rac yard gameplan against The browns and bills in the two fakes before, which is why it kinda confused me
@@justjamie4795 They did beat the buccs concepts tho. Chiefs couldn’t overcome a 4 or 3 man rush, a lot of plays in the second half you had 5 blockers against 4 or 3 dlineman, and you need longer developing plays when there are 7 or 8 men in coverage, you can get rac or any separation in 3 seconds, having the oline out lost them the game.
The crazy part people still picked KC to win in a land slide. Everyone disregard KC OL because of Maholmes and of course hardly any defense ever stopped that offense before. And I'm quite sure everyone was expecting Tyreek Hill to have 200 yards again from week 12. That was actually the last lost Tampa Bay had the rest of the season. Once they came back from there week 13 bye week. They flipped the switch
Even if the Oline was healthy the Bucs would of just scored more points,Brady was shredding the Chiefs defense until the game was to lopsided than he just started milking the clock
Those guards were also backups, because the starting guards were both out and the backup guards became the tackles. Only guy who started the other playoff games at their SB position was the center. Against that defensive front 4? They stood no chance. Run game was there all game and Reid chose to not take advantage of it. Simply did what Andy Reid has done his entire coaching career. Ignored the run early, then abandoned it when it seemed to be working (coming out of halftime). The O-Line is to blame for being put in a bind. Andy is to blame for being arrogant and thinking his skill players could save the day. Chiefs could have controlled clock and kept their defense (and Brady) off the field, waiting to pick their moment to strike deep if the Bucs adjusted defensively. Was possibly Reid's worst coaching job since coming to KC. It was embarrassing.
@@seventallguitarist I agree with that. And I have no clue why the didn't make any adjustments whatsoever at any point. I saw somewhere that the Bucs defense played the same thing 90% of the game. That's a freightening number.
Thanks Alex. Great coverage. Buc's D-Line game plan was excellent. Really all of their coaching and preparation for the Super Bowl was outstanding. They clearly outcoached the Chiefs on both sides of the ball. This time, the refs did not let the Chiefs get away with obvious penalties, particularly on downfield defense. Kelce's power put Ward on the ground at: 7:24. The play was clean though. Contact happened within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. 49ers need a franchise QB. Jimmy may not be it, particularly since he can't stay on the field. 49ers should draft, even if they need to trade up. Which QBs in this draft do you think fit Kyle's offense best?
Brady and the Bucs offense had one of the best offensive first halves of the Superbowl ever. And the scoring differential put a ton of pressure on the Chiefs, limiting the adjustments they could make. Mahomes fell into the trap early of feeling like he had to get chunk plays and the further the game went on the harder it was for him to escape that mentality. Mahomes really did play a poor game; a lot of QBs in the league would have handled the situation and the game much better. Brady is a better QB than Mahomes, right now, today. He is still the best QB in the league, he's never stopped being that. I'd put Mahomes behind Watson, Rodgers, Wilson, even with Allen, and could easily see him behind Herbert and Stafford next year.
Mahomes made some mistakes, but I honestly think that the loss wasn’t really his fault. He had some amazing throws and there wasn’t really much he could do when his line might as well have been made of air and his receivers apparently didn’t understand what catching a ball meant.

@@ericmendenhall2867 It's coming!! Probably after draft season though
This was actually stunning to see how dominant a defense can be
It’s much easier when you’re playing against essentially a second string offensive line.
@@donnydarkoh6411 or way less impressive because the Rams were at full strength.

How bad is the Bears offensive line?
This might have been the most brilliant defensive game plan in NFL history. Todd Bowles is an alien.
Would love a video on how the coach decided to so change his DNA for the big game.

@@supportlid The chiefs game plan worked, just in this video alone there were 3 tds left on the board due to bad o-line play.
@@navonmyhand7999 I’ll give you that, but they kind of came with the quick passes and Rac yard gameplan against The browns and bills in the two fakes before, which is why it kinda confused me
It's really hard to totally change a game plan, particularly on offense. Agree Andy's OC should have protected the very shaky O-line better though.
@@robbiewarrene not necessarily, the routes they were calling were deep routes a lot Vs the shorter things they called in the previous two games
Best take I have seen so far. Terrific analysis.
Thanks man!!
I know the chiefs were missing two Tackles, but the Guards took one hell of a beating too. They were massacred all game.
they were also missing two starting guards, LDT and Osemilie, also they were missing 3 tackles, Lucas niang was out too.
You makes great content!
Thank you Otto!!
Extremely astonishing calls man, u break it down perfectly.
Thanks Jon!
I'd put Mahomes behind Watson, Rodgers, Wilson, even with Allen, and could easily see him behind Herbert and Stafford next year.
thats just dissrespect.
exactly!!! his arrogance will be his downfall...

Great video and breakdown.Bowles has wisdom and experience.
Mike Ditka would be proud. my Steeler buddy said the Chiefs for got to play. LOL. :-)
Great breakdown... they need to put Todd's Gameplan in the HOF frfr. We will NEVER see an EMBARRASSMENT like this in the Super Bowl again!!
Watching that defense totally shut down the Chiefs was a thing of beauty.
You havent been worth a crap since
@@Teamster83 and?
Easily one of the best analysis of the game. Thank you sir.
Appreciate that Joe!!
Mahomes made some mistakes, but I honestly think that the loss wasn’t really his fault. He had some amazing throws and there wasn’t really much he could do when his line might as well have been made of air and his receivers apparently didn’t understand what catching a ball meant.
It wasn't at all!
@@AlexRollinsNFL yep, football is a team sport for a reason. If just a quarterback could carry a team, Bill O’Brien would still be sending away superstars in Texas.

Defense, concentration, unity, and respecting each other is the key for success as a team. Each player is a valuable asset in an important game as a championship.

#15 couldnt even get a td?Alex Smith could always score a TD wit no O-lines
Great breakdown. I think the difference in quality and experience on the line is played down a bit. It basically gave them an extra man's worth of ability up front, which is what allowed them to run so many DBs. This plan would not have worked with lesser DLs.
100%. I had a line in there talking about how Bowles reliance on the front 4 allowed him to use such a plan. A lot of plans certainly look good with 27 pressures from the front 4
Defense STILL wins championships. Game planning is one thing, but dammit, did those bucs boys on defense execute!! Not the way I wanted the season to end as a Pack fan, but I tip my 59FIFTY to that squad for dominating 2 superb offenses back to back games.
I mean, yeah defense good but it's kinda naive to not look at the o line of the chiefs, the line realized why they were back ups, am pretty sure if the chiefs would had gone against the 49ers with the same o line they would have had the same results as the buca
@@loreortiz1865 even with Eric Fisher in there, it wouldn't have made a difference. Look at the first game, he got destroyed as well and that was without Vita Vea.

@@theanonym0us ah yes because one tackle is all of what they had injured. 4 out of the o line was backups, the center Austin Reiter has had a terrible year was even benched for 4 games lmao

I always appreciate it Michael, thank you very much!
That offensive line really killed the Cheifs whole gameplan. Having two injured tackles trumps any gameplan the Bucs thought up.
The Chiefs didnt have a game plan.
Chiefs must have thought the backups could play well.
The real problem arose when they literally did nothing to adjust to having a weaker o-line. They had 2 full weeks of preparation with the knowledge that they would be weak, but they changed nothing.
@@LoanwordEggcorn exactly. They adjusted and started running more but then the lead got out of hand.
@@ChefofWar33 like the other guy said, the must've thought they would play well. They did adjust and started running but there lead got too big.
Fantastic video! Love learning coverages.
Thanks Arii brother!!
Mahomes was not embarrassed. He was relentlessly pursued all night and still managed to hit his receivers in the hands and off their face masks. So many drops. I gained quite a bit respect for him watching him try to overcome the TB pass rush. This loss is just going to galvanize Mahomes and make him even tougher to beat in the future. Hats off to Bowles and his defense who are the unsung heroes. I can't recall another defensive player being such a disruptive force as Devin White for the an entire postseason. If they stay together they will be hard to beat but rarely do teams stay together for the sake of winning again...$$$$$$$
Those could have been intercepted as well. Just the receiver or dbs didn’t think Mahomes was stupid enough to throw those. Very risky.
Trounced
@@sp_37-d91 Any pass that leaves a QB's hand can be intercepted. Tampa Bay's Receiver Corp was in awe of Mahomes even as he was chased everywhere. The guy ran over 500 yards avoiding a mostly 4-Man rush. TB defense was the hero and Mahomes showed a lot of guts trying to overcome that Defense. All I'm saying is Mahomes has nothing to be embarrassed about and will he will be harder to kill in the future.
