@@garion333the latter is bs. He could be injured but even at 100% he can’t destroy defenses when he’s always double and triple teamed. The truth is, until a receiver can consistently beat 1 defender, defenses will do everything to remove Kelce and take their chances against Rice, Watson, Moore, and MVS. If they can find ways to get Rice and Noah Grey more involved it’ll certainly help things out.
IMO. Mahomes' DoT isn't down too much - PFF says 7.2 vs 7.5 last year and 7.4 the year prior. His times to throw aren't really down either - 41% of his dropbacks are < 2 seconds - it was 45% last year. He's only pressured 35% of the time, which is 23rd. He's also the best in the league in terms of sacks per pressure, or avoiding sacks. So statistically not much has changed. What has changed is defenses and his receivers. Defenses are smarter than ever, running more Match zone concepts and split field coverages, and better than ever at designing exotic blitz packages that (as mentioned) are better at dropping unexpected DL into hot route throwing windows etc. A Match zone defense relies on great on-field chemistry and communication between members of the defense. Being able to react quickly to post-snap releases by WRs, knowing which guys to correctly pass off and which to match, where to go help when you're left without an assignment, not busting assignments etc. And the way to beat a defense that is relying on chemistry and communication is to have better chemistry/communication on offense. Option routes, alerts, post-release checks depending on coverage etc. If a defense has tendencies (and even Match zones have tendencies), then you can use those tendencies against them. You just need guys who can quickly recognize and properly react post-snap. The Chiefs don't have anybody who can do that, other than Kelce. Hill gave them a smart WR with blazing speed who could also correctly identify post-snap defensive keys and adjust his routes and come open where and when he needed to. This offense has no chemistry, and it shows in spades. Nobody thinks Mahomes forgot how to play. He ran into a speed bump in 2021 when defenses started throwing more split-field Cover-6 and Match zones at him to limit their deep passing game, and at first he was arrogant and tried to continue to beat them downfield. It took him a season to learn a valuable lesson about taking what the defense gives you, and he's been much better in that regard since and it's made him an even better QB overall. Right now he's "struggling" with something all good QBs would struggle with - good defenses bringing their A+ gameplans while he doesn't have great weapons to lean on. And yet he's still got 3,000 passing yards with 21 TDs and an Accuracy % that ranks 6th best. I do think this video is correctly titled - it's the Chiefs that can't beat the blitz, not Mahomes.
Wow finding someone that actually knows football in these comments is rare. Props to you my guy. Sorry about Burrow btw, hope he comes back strong next year.
Awesome breakdown! I honestly think between you guys and the Chiefs former Legion of Zoom unit, our offenses scared the heck out of defenses. Teams just will not come out of those deep coverage concepts. This season definitely reminds me of 2021 as well but this time we have to win with intangibles, not just by changing our scheme like you said. Btw, sorry about Joey B. I keep thinking that this must be difficult for Andy Reid. Isn't it *his hatred* of diva WRs that put them in this situation? Now here's another back of my head thought: would these receivers help *any* team? Imagine them on Carolina. Would that improve things there? Don't think so. These guys can't run routes. That makes them... useless.

While Kelce might be naturally regressing, could the 'tackle breaking' issue also be a result of teams being able to more exclusively focus on him? Even if its just single coverage, that singleman can be more confident in being in Kelce's face when he catches it, making it easier to bring him down, no?
That doesn’t make sense. If you’re guarding a reciever in iso coverage, the fact you know he’s getting the ball doesn’t inherently help you. The things that would help you is the qb having to lock on to your man late, not predetermining him going to your man.
@@koodigocrxzy465 I'm on the fence on this one. But I do think it has to be an advantage to the defense even in 1v1 situations where that ONE is anticipating that it's far more likelier for Kelce to get the reception. The Chiefs could previously draw up plays that would cause trouble for a lone defender on having to figure out who to guard, but now it's really just the one threat right? That has to be easier.
The lack of YAC from Kelce look like him protecting himself. getting older, having that knee injury in the preseason, being double teamed every play and knowing you are the only guy that can catch the ball. He also sound and looks frustrated about the offence
It seems to me that, the stronger a quarterback’s arm, the riskier blitzing him will be. Of course that’s an oversimplification because he still needs a decent O-line - one that can protect him for at least 2.5 seconds - and receivers that can get open too. I think they showed a graphic that the Chiefs’ have had an ungodly number of drops this season. No quarterback can succeed if receivers can’t catch a pass. Well, maybe unless he has Barry Sanders or Earl Campbell as a back.
The importance of having playmakers is crucial, my Titans are experiencing the same thing. Dhop is getting doubled and the Titans legit have nobody else to step up

pete carrol’s scheming is horrible. never wants to abandon the run at all. way too many 2nd and long, 3rd and longs this year. also their oline has been worse than last year so that also plays a factor.
@@mshanahan6810Nah, Geno's shown enough promise, he may just be serviceable as a QB, but he doesn't need to be elite to be flourishing with all that talent around him. That o line play and that awful offensive scheme is holding back the whole team.
@@NichrysalisThere's a reason why Geno didn't play all them years... What you saw was Geno flourishing because of good talent around him and teams needing new film on him
At 4:00 it looks like a receiver - it looks like a corner route maybe - is pretty wide open. Mahomes never saw him and instead went to a receiver in tighter coverage.
@user-wx3fm4gc2d It's also hard to know who will be open when your receiving core struggles to consistently get open. When blitzed, you tend to have time to make one or maybe two quick reads and then commit. If you look at any QB when they are blitzed, there is always at least one person open. That doesn't mean the QB has time to find them. If they have time, they shred the blitz, or if their primary read is the one that gets open, they shred the blitz.
Looking at the post-snap, it kinda looks like 11 is about to be bracketed by a safety. On film, we can see that the safety doesn't follow, but in the moment, i could understand why Mahomes went to a more obvious 1v1.
Pre-snap and post snap at 4:09 it looks like there would be a middle safety to bracket the post route running across their face. To have seen that route open up Mahomes would have had to stare down that route for 3 seconds, it doesn't open up until 4:11. He went with his pre and post snap reads and went with the known one on one match up.
If Rice continues getting better each week this won't be an issue for long. Can't keep targeting Kelce all day or else they will load up on him just like it was when we had Tony Gonzalez
Kelce has been addressed differently (and more effectively unfortunately). Look at the tackles on him. Defenders have learned to hit him very low. All of those tackles right after catch are below the knee. Defenders used to try and tackle him high. If he starts high stepping and working on those low tackles he can counter that but I don’t know if he is physically built to be able to effectively do that level of athletics. There is a physiological limit based on his build.
Love the analysis at 7:13. I think I remember watching this throw and thinking Mahomes overthrew badly, but it's so eye-opening to know that, no, actually, Rashee Rice messed up his route and Mahomes couldn't have adjusted because it might have put the ball in danger. It shows how deceptive appearances can be.
I think part of the reason they can’t beat the blitz is their receivers struggle to get separation 1 on 1. Blitzes rely on leaving corners on islands against receivers and the chiefs WRs simply can’t win one on one. Defenses are starting to buckle down on kelce so it’s down to the WRs to win and they havent
Really unfortunate that you released this after the Raiders game. The answer to a lot of your concerns is Rashee Rice, who is emerging as one if the best YAC guys in league.
ngl this is one of if not the best videos of breaking down the lack of efficiency of this offence. people tend to blame mahomes when it’s the wr who don’t have talent. rashee rice looked good against the raiders but he’s still not a good route runner at all. hopefully this offseason they can pick a couple of guys and draft maybe a guy like troy franklin
I kind of like that modern defences have finally adapted enough to the new pass-friendly rules that a good quarterback working within a smart offensive scheme is no longer enough to blow the opposition off the field - you once again need quality receivers who can beat their man on the other end of those passes if you want to score. Points may be down this season, but it's been fun to watch real battles between pass catchers and their opposing DBs.
I also noticed that since last year I think the chiefs have made Patrick more of a pocket passer yes he still does some playmaking but we’re not seeing really any mahomes run of the pocket throw a 50 yard bomb
Alex got me interested in the NFL after an 8-year hiatus with his video about how Greg Roman's offense totally ruins everything. Brett sees things no one else does.
I think it’s more likely Eric B is missed, his impact on the play calling was undervalued and it’s showing. Mahomes is still great but this was the curious part of his career where he needs to learn how to develop receivers because as you win talent becomes hard to find.
This is why I love running I formation alot. It causes one one match ups for your wide outs but if they can't beat their man when you do a play action fake out of I formation it almost always gives the TE space to make a catch if not him then the FB will be open with no one to stop him and a TE as his lead blocker.
Travis Kelce YAC is low is, because he has been in the league for awhile and doesn't want to take those hits consistently in regular season. What happened to Skyy Moore in 2nd season? He is not going to replace Tyreek Hill, but he has good coach in Andy Reid and All Time Great QB in Patrick Mahomes. Is there in a flaw in Skyy Moore that can't be fix to be a good WR on Chiefs?
Skyy Moore, Rashee Rice, and MVS, are all wr 2/3 and would be really successful if that's all they had to do. There's no alpha receiver on the chiefs though so they're all essentially wr1 at the same time but aren't those type of receivers.
Another great banger of video bro honestly this is just the failure of the front office to give him weapons from CEH to Moore to Watson even gave up picks for Toney.
They need some more specialists and their tackles have been lackluster. I'd say the biggest issue has been the run game. They will need to retool in the offseason besides Travis while Rice develops.
Concerning seeing how the Packers team they are playing this sunday is one of the leagues biggest blitzing teams with Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, and Quay Walker.
I thought letting Juju go was going to bite us in. Not that he's such a great receiver but he had good chemistry with both Mahomes and Kelce and experience
@@chasespeer251with the power of hindsight rn I don't really mind them dropping Juju since the money was too much and he looks cooked physically. Not selling out for DHop was my bigger gripe
Well they have nagy at OC lol seriously.. after the terrible play calls he called last szn for chicago, im surprised KC took him. They just lucky mahomes is a magician, turns into a TD.
As the Chiefs defense became top 3 in the Mahomes era, the Chiefs offense stagnated into an uncharacteristically stagnant top 15 unit. *Let’s see how the Chiefs front office replaces Kelce in the next few years*
Its agreeable that the Chiefs need to invest in a real Number 1 option as a Reciever to preserve Kelce. Whether its in free agency or in the draft, they need reliable hands
People were saying similar things, last year. "Defenses aren't afraid to man them up." But by the end, they had both man-beaters and zone-beaters, with Mahomes's opportunistic scrambling a key component. While I think they could be better, I also think they're built to last down the stretch. They were without 2 of their guys and Mahomes still put up 298 yards and 2 TDs passing. It's a true ensemble effort. MVS is just good enough to draw the opposition's #1 corner. They try (in vain) to hit him over the top just enough so that it has to be taken seriously, and therein lie the hitches, digs, and in- and out-breaking throws they keep in their hip pocket for crunch time, like the last AFCCG. I think there's a deeper game of limiting any one guy's exposure to too many hits. It's detrimental to the team if you're winning by getting guys beaten up. Also, I think they're all about the single-elimination tournament at the end. They store up as many surprises as possible, on offense AND defense. Like the way they denied the run and put Philly in a position to make both forced and unforced errors, by daring them to pass and then mixing their pressures and coverages when they got Philly behind the sticks on 1st down more than people expected.
You what funny none of these NFL genius have figured out. The Chiefs decided to spend their money on the defense. They have been developing players well. The CHiefs are actually a head of the game (Bills are figuring it out to).. All the other top teams in the NFL aren't paying a 40M and have all the free agents. They might have signed them, but the big FA's aren't hitting ... The 49ers and Dolphins have all this talent on rookie qb's salary. The 49ers are 14M over the cap next.. season.. Just like what happened to the Saints and Rams.. The Chiefs are avoiding putting themselves in biding by Free Agents WR's this season. If for one season, the Chiefs don't go to the SuperBowl, big deal. If they can save this defense then ..with 55M over the cap next season. A couple of free agents WR, draft a top WR (w/Rashad Rice).. The TEAM will be ROCKIN for the next FoUR Years..
Shows that there’s an upper bounds for how much you should pay the QB. Even Mahommes can’t throw to himself. If he took 8 mil less/year, that’d be enough to upgrade someone like MVS to a true WR1.
They should be 10-1 but you failed to mention the drops have killed them more than the blitz. 1 catch in the lions game and one against the eagles . So realistically they are fine.
If Andy Reid has opposing Defenses thinking Patrick Mahomes can't beat the blitz heading into the post season, the defensive coordinators in the first few rounds are going to be dismantled.... Please double Travis Kelce and let the Chiefs RPO to his vacated area. Andy is going to take the restrictor off Pacheco in the Postseason, its going to be a blast to watch... I hope.
The receivers clearly aren't good enough to win one on one. I think Andy Reid could do more to help Mahomes. Reid has always been known as a pass happy guy. Going spread with the current wide receivers is forcing Mahomes to be superman every play. The Chiefs invested in the o-line, have 3 capable tight ends that can win against linebackers and a sub 4.4 running back that runs angry. Reid would benefit from having a run game coordinator such as Greg Roman and implementing down hill runs off tackle like the Cowboys did with a prime Zeke or even how the Titans do with Derrick Henry. Most of the time the shotgun runs are your typical run up the middle 3 yards and a cloud of dust runs. Running the ball from shotgun doesn't allow Pacheco to get a head of steam going and limits the gaps he can attack. If you look at Derrick Henry's best runs they are from under center. Running from under center would also allow Mahomes to turn his back to the defense and throw behind the linebackers on play action. I also don't think Reid does much in the way of adjustments mid game. The Chiefs are second to last in second half points to the Cardinals. Not sure how effective it was but I have noticed Reid has phased out the college running back swing motion where the running back would sprint to the sideline. Reid could also implement the Miami motion to allow Mecole to run down the field without having to worry about getting off the press.
Simple. Not only has the talent of his team been eroding... The league is not overlooking chief penalties like they used to. Pattys biggest plays used to happen when his line was false starting and holding.. including the superbowl. Big time penalties.. ignored.
Thr Chiefs are still 8 and 3 and are currently the top seeded team in the AFC. So how is this possible? You'd think that they're playing with skid-row bums or something. 🤔
Knowing the Chiefs they are probably just acting like they can’t beat the blitz so come post season they can tear up opposing offenses. I swear to give you an idea of how good this team is I would think they lost on purpose before I thought they lost by accident.😂
Conformation that our WR’s SUCK! Horrible rout running…dropped passes….fumbles after catch! Ridiculous how bad our WR’s are. It will cost us a SB win. And waste a top 5 defense. Shame! Could have made a move at the trade deadline.

It causes one one match ups for your wide outs but if they can't beat their man when you do a play action fake out of I formation it almost always gives the TE space to make a catch if not him then the FB will be open with no one to stop him and a TE as his lead blocker.
You beat the blitz by taking advantage of one on one matchups, often longer routes. Problem is the KC WR drop a lot of passes
Love you Alex! We don’t care bout behind the scenes BS. You put out top tier content!
Brilliant visuals rollins on fire
Thanks Alex!!! Let’s Go Chiefs! It’ll be an exciting playoff season no doubt. Eagles vs who? I can’t decide
Another great banger of video bro honestly this is just the failure of the front office to give him weapons from CEH to Moore to Watson even gave up picks for Toney.
Leading the league in drops
Wideouts can’t get separation
This needs fixed quickly
They need some more specialists and their tackles have been lackluster. I'd say the biggest issue has been the run game. They will need to retool in the offseason besides Travis while Rice develops.
Concerning seeing how the Packers team they are playing this sunday is one of the leagues biggest blitzing teams with Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, and Quay Walker.
Andy Reid, once again, got high on his own supply. "Receiver by committee? No problem, I'll scheme them open."
I've never heard it put better. It's like what the saints do even when Michael Thomas is healthy, but slightly more sucessful.
And in SB 58, OT, Mahomes hits Rice on an all-out blitz to pick up the first down on a critical play. The problem got fixed.
I can't believe I've just watched a video of someone praising the Chargers defense
*Let’s see how the Chiefs front office replaces Kelce in the next few years*
Kittle is way better than Kelce
If I were them I would trade for Kyle Pitts. Absolute freak at the tight end position
The chiefs invested in defense rather than offense
I will lose my mind if they somehow get a Brock bowers type TE lol
@@patek9789Says no one with a brain lmao
to me it’s simple - if you’re offense is too complex for young receivers to thrive, for chrissake simplify it.
Its agreeable that the Chiefs need to invest in a real Number 1 option as a Reciever to preserve Kelce. Whether its in free agency or in the draft, they need reliable hands
Kelce's been hurt on top of being a 34 year old playing a 25 year old's game, hoping he can bounce back 🫡
People were saying similar things, last year.
MY BOY ALEX!!!!
I understand what your saying but the Chargers got toasted for over 400 yards passing by Mahomes in that game maybe they're not the best example.
This literally happened to Aaron Rodgers lmao
Were 8 and 3 in first place we must be doing something right .these clips are ridiculous. Chiefs kingdom
Alex rollins mid-week post?
reid is keeping mckinnon's snap count low until dec. lets see what happens.
It will be interesting to see what Mahomes game will look like once Kelce retires. Will he be better, worse, the same ?
Probably the same
Ohhhh is that why we are calling 12 screen plays a game, actually not an exxaggeration by the way
Kelce just not as committed to football anymore, he's trying not to fumble the bag
Rice would be a great WR2 and Kelce could work all day, if we had a WR1, but we just don't. Aggravating.
defense is back baby
As a chiefs fan I agree with this but calling rashee rice a role player is a crime
They should be 10-1 but you failed to mention the drops have killed them more than the blitz. 1 catch in the lions game and one against the eagles . So realistically they are fine.
They said they ain't need tyreke hill and they was right for one year now it's gonna cost them
9:43 nice block in the back penalty missed here that allowed the TD. Cheap
You mean having one weapon to work with is hindering the offense? Who woulda thunk it!
I hope.
😂
bros smoking on that delusion pacc
Another example in football of you are as good as the players around you
The receivers clearly aren't good enough to win one on one.
TE regressing
WRs mid at best
Yet 8-3
Mahomes has done well
Great defense helps too
defensive team more than an offensive team this year
his defense is stacked and has been getting carried by them
@@forbiddenDRAINlike most teams this year.
Travis also might be distracted by the whole Taylor Swift situation
Idk, because even if the chiefs have one more weapon, you still double team Kelce all day.
Simple. Not only has the talent of his team been eroding... The league is not overlooking chief penalties like they used to. Pattys biggest plays used to happen when his line was false starting and holding.. including the superbowl. Big time penalties.. ignored.
I never saw Kelce as a WR,, hes just too big.
Well he can’t be a TE because that would require the ability to block
lol its just a wr thing. we gave up wrs to have everything else. rashee rice might fix things though.
Thr Chiefs are still 8 and 3 and are currently the top seeded team in the AFC.
So how is this possible?
You'd think that they're playing with skid-row bums or something. 🤔
Thanks for cursing us Packers for the next game Alex
Did literally everyone forget the Chiefs won the last Super Bowl WITHOUT Tyreek Hill. Chiefs are perfectly fine. Sheesh
Kelce can’t even take a few games off to get healthy.
Chiefs find a way.
Knowing the Chiefs they are probably just acting like they can’t beat the blitz so come post season they can tear up opposing offenses. I swear to give you an idea of how good this team is I would think they lost on purpose before I thought they lost by accident.😂
SOMEONE SHOW THIS TO JOE BARRY QUICK
Mahomes taking Walmart greeters and real-estate agents to the superbowl with this receiving core.
Conformation that our WR’s SUCK! Horrible rout running…dropped passes….fumbles after catch! Ridiculous how bad our WR’s are. It will cost us a SB win. And waste a top 5 defense. Shame! Could have made a move at the trade deadline.
Now you see what Lamar had to deal with
Travis regressing the same season he's dating Swift. Poor guy gonna be washed until he gets rid of her.
no word about eric bieniemy?
I don’t know why no one is talking about this.. Sam Howell is leading the league in pass yards… we for sure miss EB.
Kelce old girlfriend had him eating soul food that boy probably a vegan now😂😂😂😂😂
The problem is Mat Nagy.
said no one ever who actually follows the Chiefs
8:47 ayo
that’s what happens if your receivers stink
Its called no tyreek
Refs no longer bailing out KC and Pat. This is the result….
The result is that they still 8 and 3 and you're going to shit yourself in postseason when having to face KC.
@@maskassmario321 of course, Refs will bail them out like they have for every game in the last 4 years.
@@DavidT97 if the refs *really* wanted the chiefs to win, they'd be undefeated. each game they had drives stalled by penalties or TDs called back.
I can't tell if the Taylor Swift is just a joke or a legit dig. I don't even like Taylor Swift
tee higgins is a chief🤞🏽
If Mahomes had this receiving core when he started he probably would have turned into a bust
nope
I think Kelce clearly has his mind elsewhere. He got that good good on the brain.
Kelce is on the decline. He shouldn't be the focal point and that's the problem! From a upset chiefs fan
Ever since Kelce has become a pharm shill, I Have been routing against him. Der you can get both at the same time
Rewrite when sober, please.
@@markb3786 wHeN sObEr, PlEaSe. The Der is noises retarts make. The fact that he was on a commercial saying you should get both vaccines at the same time is purely retarded.
Answer.....Matt Nagy cant coach. Why is he OC?
Kelce has the Pfizer curse
See this is why Brady was so good. He had the iq to beat defenses with sub par weapons
Mahomes is better at it
@markb3786 not at all lmao. That's why he has to run around. He runs until someone is wide open so he doesn't have to make a read
