    The Minnesota Vikings defense has gotten a million times better, by spamming the riskiest blitz ever. Their new defensive coordinator Brian Flores has built an entire defense around Cover 0, he’s blitzing at one of the highest rates ever, and it’s paying off big time. What is Cover 0? How does Flores use it? And how can teams try and counter? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze the Minnesota Vikings defense under Brian Flores.

      I think the FO/Execs understand the duality of Brian Flores. Amazing DC and a floor raiser of defensive play even with mediocre talent. But def not HC material with the results he turned when given more responsibilities on different sides of the ball. Offenses are still key in the modern NFL and Flores' inability to assemble a staff for that side of the ball will set him back for now.

    I also like how Flores is allowing players to succeed that would otherwise not in other schemes. He knows how to use even the players deep in the depth chart in a way that is productive. He knows how to use each player. Ed Donatell on the other hand was using a hammer to fix a window last year.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 7 месяцев назад +3

      To be fair this is actually par for course in getting a mediocre talented defense to over achieve. When Wink Martindale became the DC of the Giants their defense wasn't proven and had a young core. So his bread and butter was dialing blitzes even on late passing downs when opponents were in the red zone. The secondary was not built for zone under Donatell last season and despite the turnover of talent, the guys the Vikings picked up this season are built for tackling. The real underrated aspect about Flores is he's a much better game planner and adjuster as a coach than Donatell ever was.

    • @therealxdp
      @therealxdp 6 месяцев назад

      Wink was always a blitzer. LONG before he even got to the Giants. It's not something that's par for the course of over achieving, as they've done the same thing (both B-Flo and Wink) with every team they've been on. It's just them doing what worked with other teams and doing the exact same thing but making it better.

    I remember the brain was the head coach of the Dolphins he would run a lot of zero coverage, but to see him use that same scheme while also giving a defense that was supposed to be even worse this year (lost Kendricks, Peterson, Dalvin and smith) the freedom and trust is just amazing to watch. For the first time since 2018 the vikings finally have a defense that we can trust. I hope that we get to keep brain for the next 2 years but seeing how well he is doing I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave this offseason. whatever team gets him will be lucky too have a coach like him. Just adding some more insight, I play collegiate ball, MLB. My DC also installed the 0 blitz package. We call it “flat top” great pressure defense where we always have one more rusher than offense does blocker. The secondary for us plays a “platinum” technique, sit at roughy 8-10 yards and always reading the QBs eyes, not your man. Since we’re bringing pressure the ball has to be thrown out quickly and allows the DB’s to break on it the second they see the QB start his throwing motion. Also for the blitzers, we have a rule depending on the call where if you get “2 hands 2 eyes” from an oline man, drop in coverage(hicks dropping to slant window is exactly how this is done) or against a RB/TE we do a snatch technique so that can’t late release. Only true counter to this is a slide protection roll out that way quick pass concept

Addison is a stud that's only going to get better especially with a healthy Jefferson on the field, holy geez defenses are gonna have to be honest with those 2 on opposite sides of the field. The only downside I really see with the team is RB. If y'all had a stud RB again you probably would be undefeated

    As a Vikes fan but not knowing all the X&O’s nuances I love watching this style of defense. I would also like to think that this defense could be the future OP defense (until OC’s find a fail safe counter). All you need is a team that can tackle and stay on the same page. If you add top tier talent to this style of defense it could be sooo dominant. Outside of the X&O’s what’s so powerful about this defense style is it gives the QB very limited chances to know the coverage pre snap.

    This is literally the 2019 pats defense. Cover 0 on most passing downs, having DB’s play inside leverage while rushers who a blocked drop into coverage to get a free runner to the QB. It’s a great coverage against lesser QB’s like Fields, Bryce, and Baker. I love the old Aaron Rodgers method, call max protect when you see that tight cover 0 and throw that deep post, cus even if they don’t play cover 0 they still have no one in the deep middle so it’s free real estate. It’s pretty typical for defenses to throw blitzes every other play when their defense is mediocre, the giants did it, the pats did it, the jags did it, it’ll win you games in the regular season but will get torn apart in the post season.

    This is part of the sea change in football defenses, in my opinion. I’m forgetting which team, but another DC is doing something similar…confuse the QB.
    I played competitive Ultimate for 26 years and coached along the way. Laugh all you want, Ultimate is now a professional sport. I started playing Ultimate because I needed an intense physical activity after quitting martial arts. At the time, I was also touchy about intensely hierarchical organizations, and Ultimate before it became professional was anything but hierarchical.
    Historically, teams played defenses as either person-on-person (aka “man”) or zone. I prefer zone because eventually a team will always encounter an opponent with better physical talent, and if you haven’t played zone a lot it’s hard to play it well, especially against better physical talent. In promoting zone play, I observe a lot of players during zone that would stick to their zone area, instead of covering the closest player. So I tried to coach players to play zone conceptually, but in practice play transient person-on-person. The competitive players were sure that it was one way or the other, man or zone. But the teams in city league or in pick up play would actually listen to the idea.
    I had a difficult time teaching this approach, in large part, because the majority of the players were simply having fun. Getting them to focus and be intense is a challenge. And forget regular practice sessions once I left competitive ultimate.
    Bottom line is that I see the same concept being used by at least two NFL defensive coordinators. And I believe it’s a better way to play defense.

    Crazy how Madden concepts have made it to the NFL. The read rush where a defender drops into coverage if blocked has been done in Madden for over a decade before Bill Belichick implemented it.
    The motioning of a wr to block has also been done in Madden for years.

    Flores is definitely doing very well, but I am not sure about front runner for Coordinator of the Year. The much less experienced OCs for Commanders, Colts, Texans and Ravens, the OC for the Lions, and Big Lou for the Bengals are all excelling.

      @@jameswallace5133the thing is like said in the video, the Vikes had the 28th worst defense last year in points given up and 31st in yards. This year it's 15th and 11th with arguably a worse group talent wise. That's a big jump all because of 1 guy calling the defensive plays. The Lions had the 5th best offense in terms of points and 4th best in yards. This year it's 8th and 2nd. So the Lions offense really hasn't changed in the rankings from last year. If anything I'd say the Lions DC has been more impressive, going from 28th most points given up last year and 32nd most yards to this year being 18th and 7th. What's weird is Vikings and Lions both have up 427 points last year lol.

      @@MnWildFan Defensive team performances year to year is definitely a bigger variance in the NFL and the Lions in a sense is proof that this season. Yes its good key players for them like HUtchinson, McNeill (DT) and their secondary are taking big steps to improvement but their strength of schedule def helps the defense to look good even in DVOA stats. I saw this in the previous recent seasons with the Pats where its hard to overlook their impact on defense when they have a cupcake schedule. Outside of Mahomes (week 1), Geno (playing like a top 10 qb) and Lamar the Lions defense have taken on QBs like Jimmy G, Baker Mayfield, Bryce Young, Jordan Love and Desmond Ridder.

    I feel like if you also have crafty receivers who can nod and stack you can run posts against cover 0 and they're pretty fucked. Offense definitely has to have reads for the WRs built in for this. Definitely a clever set up and in the UW vs. ASU (I want to say it was ASU and not Arizona) game they ran a very similar defense to this and confused the shit out of Penix. They had no answers for it.

    For this year, this might be great to get to the playoffs. What happens when you get there? If the top qbs are in the playoffs generally and your scheme struggles against top qbs....

    • @AmericanNomad82
      @AmericanNomad82 6 месяцев назад +1

      Honestly we didn't struggle against any of them. We went toe to toe with them all and lost by only one score with each of them and most of it was because of our own mistakes with fumbles and interceptions and then against the chiefs the refs took away our chance at what CLEARLY should have been an overtime game. But other than us "struggling with good QB's", everything else this guy said was great.

    • @JamesWhite-qk1xd
      @JamesWhite-qk1xd 6 месяцев назад

      I think it is less that it struggles against top QBs (though we did struggle against Justin Herbert) it is more that we just dominate less than elite QBs which is something this team really needs with how the offense has been playing to our opponent

    The fact that the Vikes are middle of the pack defense. With only 2 first rounders on their entire defense, one being 34 year old Harrison Smith, and the other being Marcus Davenport who is considered a bust and has been injured all year. Really shows how elite this system is. Imagine giving him some top level talent on top of this!

      @@t4d0W yeah but you didn’t have any elite pass rushers on the edge at that time. You had Wilkins and that’s about it. And a very up and down secondary due to injury and a bad LB core. Basically he’s never had truly elite level talent to work with. Which is why they immediately fell defensively after Flores left. Even tho they added top level talent to the defensive side of the ball after he left!
      I think if he was coordinating the 49ers they might be undefeated with multiple shut outs.

    I would imagine that if a team runs a Cover-0 defense it might get hurt by a team with a quarterback with a big arm and a low Time-to-Throw (TT) number, especially if he’s really accurate. I was thinking about maybe Jacksonville since Trevor can throw 70 to 75 yards with a TT time of I think 2.44 this year, one of the lowest, and somewhere in the high-60s for a completion percentage. The Vikings gave the 49ers a lot of problems, especially Brock Purdy, but Brock’s TT was I think 2.6 last time I looked - very good for a second-year guy - but Brock isn’t known to have a big arm. But I’m just thinking a big arm helps because the QB, under a heavy rush, will have to throw quite a bit off-platform.

    Please, they have one of the weakest schedules of any team this yr. Thus far the only good team they have beaten was the 49ers. They started the season 0-3, even lost to practically a 3rd string QB in Baker Mayfield and the Bucs. They need to blitz 7-8 to get to the QB's while other team only uses 4, maybe 5. This is not a good defense my friend. Good teams with receivers with speed usually find a way to counter man blitzes with this speed and great scheme. Love your video break downs though. Keep up the gr8 work.
