    This new retrospective / review is written, edited and voiced by Tim Partridge. Tim has appeared on my RUclips channel a number of times over the years taking part in audio commentaries and he directed my Superman IV documentary 'The Man of Steel and Glass'. Tim really wanted to produce a video to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Darkwing Duck and has put a lot of time and effort into this video. I hope you all enjoy it!

      Which the DuckTales reboot totally, utterly squandered.
      Whether it was Darkwing, Gosalyn, Steelbeak, etc. The reboot not only failed to capture the same vocal power, but it did something even worse...
      It made these characters *BORING.* Pale, boring imitations of the superior original iterations.

    • @graydragon4944
      @graydragon4944 2 года назад +2

      While I do strongly agree that the voices for Gosalyn and Steelbeak are pretty weak in comparison to back then, I do think the new Darkwing duck’s voice is just as great. Gosalyn was supposed to look and sound like a young 10 year old, however, she comes off more as a 16 year old while Steel beak is…sorta average??? They completely changed his character unfortunately. But I do think the new Darkwing is pretty solid because he’s supposed to be a young passionate actor who looks up Darkwing and he comes off as genuinely excited and passionate about taking on the role as the new Darkwing duck. This is just my opinion though, I could be completely off for all I know-

    Darkwing Duck was my favorite cartoon show as a kid. It only ran on Swedish television briefly before getting banned for it's cartoon violence, but I still kept old taped episodes on VHS that I would rewatch obsessively, in particular the episodes Stressed To Kill, Water Way To Go, In Like Blunt, Duck Blind, Night of the Living Spud and Time And Punishment. It was astounding how much the show kept getting funnier the older I got and came back to revisit it. It's influenced my own creative work immensely and I'm still amazed to this day by how many genres and tones the series managed to jump across. "Relentless and manic energy" with loads of heart sums it up perfectly.

      Banned? Sad.

    • @rattis
      @rattis 2 года назад +11

      @@ReverendMeat51 Yes, banned. In the mid 90's a little girl in Norway got killed by a group of boys apparently playing Power Rangers. After that, most major swedish television channels decided to stop airing any childrens shows that were considered violent. This ban eventually went away, but some of the specific shows that had been purged either didn't appear on TV ever again, or not untill more than a decade later. Darkwing was one of those shows that was off the air for years untill reruns started on Disney Channel sometime in the 00's. I've personally always suspected this temporary ban on violent kids shows was the reason Sweden never got Dragon Ball Z even though that show was making fortunes in other markets at the time. Instead, the show that defined a generation of anime fans in Sweden was Sailor Moon.

    • @Qwazin
      @Qwazin 2 года назад +7

      @@rattis On the positive side I feel like the ban really solidified Darkwing Duck into a particularly legendary status among Swedish fans. It was one of those things you would bring up among friends at school and everyone's eyes light up even though there was no way of watching it anymore. You sort of had to have been there when it was on the air to know what it was all about. Plus, the dubbing was outstanding. I stumble across the Swedish dub of the show once in a while and it still makes me laugh hysterically. The team of translators and voice actors were clearly appreciating the humor and were having a blast.

    It's really cool seeing a video about an animated tv series that had such an impact on someone personally. Tim did a really great job on this you could feel how much of a passion project this was. I think we can all relate to something we enjoyed as a kid that we still have fond memories of. What's even better is when we rewatch them and it still holds up rather well. Truth be told that's not always the case as I've really loved and enjoyed shows as a kid that I've rewatched again as an adult that really haven't aged well or were very cheesy lol. Thankfully my main favorite shows as a kid have held up for me: X-men the animated series, Batman the animated series, and Gargoyles. There are other shows that I loved that had great concepts and potential like The Pirates of Dark Water that upon watching as adult seemed they may have had some good material chopped and left on the cutting room floor due to time constraints but still had some great moments and loved the world it created.

    What an excellent review/retrospective of my favourite show growing up. It's fun to see that the show still holds up after so many years. I also was really happy with the Darkwing Duck centred episodes in DuckTales 2017. I really, really hope that the reboot turns out great.
    Also, here's some interesting trivia from a Swedish viewer of the show. The 3rd season was never dubbed into Swedish because there were a bunch of controversies surrounding it and similar shows at the time. The Looney Tunes-esque violence some parents thought was related to some high profile cases of children killing other children, so it was decided that the final season was not going to get a proper dub. As someone who was a masssive fan and only learned of this in my late teens in the 2000s, I was pretty darn bummed by knowing this. At least I got to rewatch the show on VHS so many times thanks to my mom recording it. :)

    Best line from Darkwing Duck was after he awoke on the alien ship just as a brain with eyeballs in a jar:
    "C-Calm down, Darkwing. Don't panic. You've been in much worser situations than this.
    ...NO YOU HAVEN'T!! AAAAAAHHHH!!!"

    THAT'S where I know the voice. He was on the St. Canard Files episode for Dry Hard! I think.

    More Boomer influence: Herb's shed was probably a reference to Fibber McGee's closet. Great research and narration as always.

    Darkwing Duck was my favorite cartoon as a kid. I recently introduced my kids to the show and they love it and theme song. Great Retrospective.

    Oh. What a lovely time I just had. The whole time I felt exactly like the new speaker guy. I grew up watching Darkwing Duck. I remember how upset I was when my Nintendo game copy stopped working and I couldn't play my favorite game anymore. Months of distress.
    Boy... it's been 30 years almost. I feel really old now.

    Bruh, that Basil of Baker Street easter egg might also be a super clever nod to the fact that Sherlock Holmes was also one of the inspirations for Batman, one of the characters that Darkwing Duck is based on.

    This was a nice video, guys. I loved Darkwing Duck growing up and it's fun revisiting the Disney Afternoon shows on Disney plus now. I'm thinking of one day doing my own video series of the Disney Afternoon show by show. I'd like to use this video as a reference for some of my research. I'll give credit and a link, of course. Anyway, great job! Let's get dangerous.
