They had planned for the living Engineer to have more time. It included dialogue that revealed that the reason they were headed to Earth to wipe out humanity 2000 years ago was in retaliation for humans killing Christ. Christ had been put on the Earth by the engineers to try to save humanity from themselves, to show them how to be less violent and terrible. When humans killed Christ, the Engineers decided it was time to end the experiment. This is often part of the whole Annunaki trope. Naturally, they scrapped that idea at the last minute. It would have been too divisive.
Completely agree. It's why the deleted scene with the Last Engineer and David talking to each other is so popular. Being able to directly confront our creators with the questions we've always had about our existence and where we come from is so much more interesting than taking the Engineer and turning him into a rampaging monster. All of the Engineer scenes in Prometheus as it stands would be so much better if the creature was allowed to be more of a character rather than reducing it to a rampaging monster.

Because just being an alien bug from some backwater planet on the ass end of the galaxy is terribly mundane. Aliens being a construct is not a bad idea. It's just that the execution sucked. If it was IMPLIED to be some creation from a long bygone aeon by some inexplicable race of elder things for an equally inexplicable reason, like say - Lovecraft's Shoggoths. It would land way harder than them being them being created like last Tuesday by a fruity android with delusions of grandeur. The first rule of answering mysteries in media, is to - paradoxically preserve the mystery by ensuring that the every answer leaves behind two more questions.
Exactly. The films would’ve been way more compelling if they delved into the Weyland/Weyland-Yutani Corporation’s evolution, discovery of the Alien species (through which they could’ve perhaps explored the “engineer” species) and this inevitably leading into their stitch up of the Nostromo crew. What few people get is that the Alien is merely a MacGuffin. The antagonist is (or at least was in Alien and Alien 3) the Company, callously throwing its employees at it with all the androids they put amongst the humans steering things towards their desired ends.
I agree such a perfect monster needs no explanation we don't need to know who made it. Could be nature's perfect killing machine could be old gods from a bygone era we don't know and it doesn't matter and that's the point the xenomorph is so effective because we don't know that much about it it is alien in every way we can describe how it reproduces how it bleeds the fact that it has two mouths everything about this creature is alien and it needs no explanation
Prometheus was the best thing to happen to the franchise in decades. Absolute shame they got cold feet and changed direction with the lacklustre Covenant. The epic scale of the story Prometheus introduced was a fantastic foundation for a whole new trilogy. It deserved more. And also, less dumb characters.

Giger's original design was demonic looking, sexual, lethal and very mysterious. That mystery has been lost turning him into just some kind of insect or weapon when there should be a very dark and ancient mystery to him and his origins.
It’s tough to agree with your opinion, but you’re right. I think the mystery aspect keeps people more interested. Once you have the knowledge you seek, it’s like okay, now we know and it’s not the same. Almost like figuring out how all the magic tricks are done. It looses its wow factor.
I don't think it's controversial at all to want a movie in the same universe as Aliens that isn't about the Xenomorphs. The scene in Covenant that shows them arrive at the Engineer homeworld and releasing the black bio-agent was really interesting and thought provoking. Why show a rich, space-faring civilization and society as part of a soundless flashback? Explore that!

I've said for years that Prometheus deserved it's own separate universe/franchise. Tacking it on to Alien seems like it made both worse and was a transparent grab for a preexisting audience.
I think Prometheus could have worked within the Alien universe. Just because the first film was a haunted house in space doesn't mean that it didn't hint at an interesting universe. That's why Aliens, being more of an action film did a great job expanding that universe. It took what was there and built on it in a way that made sense and was very well written. Unfortunately, whatever good ideas we're in there (and Prometheus definitely has some good ideas), the execution was so poor that the movie wasn't very good. I think Lindelof destroyed the original script and Scott is too aloof to be calling the shots at this point.

The original “Covenant” and the proposed third film sound like they could’ve been great. Trying to graft things on by committee failed and ditching the two surviving characters from “Prometheus” made “Covenant” come across as more of a reboot
People complained too much about prometheus, and then they freaked out and xenomorph-erised covenant. They should have just stood by their vision, which I for one found very compelling.

Who made such a creature is NOT the question anyone should ever be asking, this was the mistake. The Alien was scary because we knew nothing about it, it's abilities, it's behavior. But we slowly learned, only to find out that this creature was insanely scary. After Aliens, we still didn't know where they originally came from. Why couldn't the species just be a marvel of evolution on a distant planet? The mystery was half of the tension, when you remove that, you are left with nothing.
Not to mention there are countless stories both in novels and comics that were extremely fascinating that revolved around missions to alien infested worlds to collect 'royal jelly' which would have made for a neat movie in my opinion. To your point, we don't need an origin story, we just need further exploration into the Alien universe.
To me its scary cause it has claws, it can bite, it has a sharp and pointy tail, it has acidic blood, it has a facehugger stage where it will again, cause you to have a horrific painful death, it can hide in the dark, its super fast and strong. And you cant negotiate with it. It either eats your face or drags your ass to the hive to make you suffer an even worse death
I remember the first time I watched Alien, my headcanon was purely that the Space Jockey's ship had just been previously taken over by the xenomorphs, much how they later take over the base on LV426 in Aliens. They had nothing to do with them and were just victims of an accident or perhaps their own hubris. This idea that the Space Jockeys "made" the xenomorphs is just kind of ridiculous. It takes the whole thing from a place of Lovecraftian existential dread, and into another tired story about the hubris of scientists taking things too far. Again.
Im a huge fan of both Prometheus and Covenant......and HATE that Scott was never allowed to finish it. I wish he would finish it some form or fashion, no matter if its novel, comic book, video game, short streaming series......WHATEVER......just let it be allowed to be completed. The chilling ending of Covenant with David having access to all the embryo's is such a cliff hanger ......and you really want to see David get his just ending from a villan stand point. Scott is a powerful man in Hollywood.....But he's not getting any younger.....I hope he uses his leverage to complete it at some point in some way.
I loved Prometheus, but unfortunately, I'm among the people really disappointed with Covenant. That said, I did think the end of Covenant was a great set up for a third movie. The idea of David with a whole ship of humans to experiment on had me excited for the next movie even though I wasn't that enthused about the one I had just watched.

Prometheus was awesome. Too bad Ridley Scott couldn't buckle down and give us a true sequel instead of Alien Covenant of Trash. Prometheus actually tried to expand the scope of the franchise, and it made for an entertaining and compelling watch.
"Squint and you can see a flawed masterpiece" is exactly how I remember Prometheus. I love the ambitious story and I'm sad it won't be finished. Studios want to make movies for focus groups then are shocked when critics and fans dislike them.
Prometheus is actually nowhere near as bad as its reputation - It has some glaring issues yes but it's still a decent if not great film. Covenant is an atrocity every bit as bad as Alien3 if not actually even worse!
Promethus was pretty good as a prequel. I just wished they would have kept most of the stuff they deleted from the film that added a lot of info to the lore. Covenant on the other hand was Atrocious and fked up what Prometheus tried to build.
To me that was part of the problem. They changed it mid way through and then tried to backtrack. It feels like two heads on one body trying to go their own direction. Both decent on their own but choppy and contradicting together.

And if you're familiar with Damon Lindeloff, the way he leaves the characters with none of their questions answered and even more new ones is brilliant. Part of what made the original so good was the unknown, which is why Covenant was such a blunder by Fox.

Exactly what I've always said!! The comics by dark horse were far, far, leaps and bounds better than all the films made since Aliens (1986) same with Predator and AVP.
This happens SO much in films. You get decades worth of amazing comics and novels that could be easily adapted, but then the newfangled film version (like Star Wars) goes off in some new direction and ignores all the fantastic ideas it could have reused.
If you adapt from comics or books, you have to pay the publisher or writer royalties. Hollywood is cheap, they don't want to do that. So the studios write their own stories so they can make the money and not have to pay anyone else.

Internet killed Alien. Prometheus was an opportunity to look at Ridley Scott’s perspective. But the internet lost its mind and we got the second film to put Prometheus concepts to death

I quite like what Covenant did in some regards, and I love the Xenomorph, but the film tried to balance the 2 elements (Prometheus and Alien) in a sloppy way. Everything with David was fascinating. The opening scene with Peter was one of the best. But that xenomorph ending felt slapped on and rushed and kinda lame. I still want a 3rd movie, though. I love the lore of the Engineers.
I watched the death of the prequel trilogy before my very eyes. Scott famously said in an interview pre-Prometheus' release that the film had "strands of Alien's DNA in it." After the film came out, I saw the internet replete with "wtf, where were the Aliens!?" So the studio panicked, moved Scott's plan up to xenomorphs in the second film. And after it came out, the internet was once again filled with moaning, this time about wanting to know more about the Engineers. There is no winning when you knee-jerk so quickly to the computer masses. Was either film as good as Scott's original or Cameron's? Of course not, but the failures are only partially on the finished films as well... I think we're all rightfully stoked for Romulus, but I forsee a similar fate for Alien: Earth. The writing's on the wall just with the show title and purported subject material. If I wanted corporate espionage and android origins I'd ask for a Bladerunner tv series.

Both prequels are great from start to finish, and have a surprising amount of support. Prometheus in particular made a rather respectable amount of money back. Since Romulus is getting such an overall great, crowd-pleasing reception and raking in the dough, after the TV series is sorted we may yet see a proper conclusion to the trilogy after all. And I'm so here for that.
Because Covenant was horrible decision after horrible decision. I finished prometheus and despite its flaws I wanted to know what happened to Shaw and David and how would the so call "premorph" would play. then it came out and every single character was a moron and importan scenes where left on firkin RUclips. I never felt this angry at a decision to put important information outside of the movie that I would not have figure out if not from commentary and reviewers talking about it. Prometheus was not perfect but it at least was interesting Covenant was stupid and not just the script and characters, every decision they made for advertising was stupid.

I hate how movies now always make the highly educated scientists overall morons. What you do is make them smart in certain regard and area sa but make them flawed, maybe even deeply flawed. Make them the do do math well, make them Sherlockian deductive genius, make them have the tech or CompSci genius but, at the same time give them a flaw like, they cant talk to people, hate people, arrogant, a virgin who is easily seduced, a racist/sexist, a furry. A good character is someone who simultaneously has talents to progress the story and flaws to possibly exploit and make the problem the characters have to deal with.
To be fair - the characters in Prometheus were morons as well. Man I hated that film. I got free tickets to an extra large screen showing of Convenant when it was released, still felt ripped off leaving the cinema.

Yup, a lot of people DID ask who the space jockey was. That's how we got the Dark Horse comics. As a species, they are absolutely menacing. And that one in the pilot seat is mummified, those aren't remnants of its suit. Also, said comics detailed where the aliens come from. And made them WAY more terrifying because they are shown to not even be apex predators on their home world. There are things that hunt xenomorphs as prey. Which also goes a long way to explain their general hostility.

It's interesting how it's completely different with the Predator: there is lots of source material and canon exploring their society, species and habits. But I agree, the mystery was half of the terror. But as I already mentioned elsewhere.... you can't just repeat the same story about a couple of humans meeting an alien, getting killed off one by one and not knowing what to do or underestimating it, again & again. Don't MacGyver it. So I can understand the decision to dive into the origin. I don't agree with all of it - much is still unknown and I just ignore that David created the Alien - but I can understand why they did it. But as usual, the original "Alien" is now old enough that they decided it would bring in enough cash to do a remake for the current generation - many of them don't want to watch movies from almost 40 years ago and most only know/saw the recent ones.

Thank you for telling the true story. I hate when people lump Prometheus and Covenant together as "Ridley Scott's fault" when they're literally polar opposites: one an ambitious new story set in the same universe that went over people's heads and another riddled with studio notes and Alien references with the subtlety of a brick. Whoever at Disney cancelled Scott's plans to bring back the intrigue of the Androids and Engineers clearly didn't do their homework on whose fault it actually was.
Despite its flaws I liked Prometheus and was intrigued by where it would go, but Covenant was such a disappointment as both a Prometheus sequel and an Alien prequel it almost felt Scott had made the film out of spite.
Right? Prometheus was never intended to be a prequel in the first place. So when Fox made Scott backtrack and turn the sequel to Prometheus into a prequel series, it just turned into a big mess that was only kind of half committed to either franchise.
Yeah Covernant was a movie that was trying to be 2 different films while Prometheus had an original idea for the franchise. It's like trying to make a movie that's both Alien and Aliens, same franchise but 2 completely different movies.
That line, though making perfect contextual sense between 2 synthetics in that physical scenario, situated opposite eachother; was nonetheless _SOOOOOOOO_ absurdly on-the-nose, that its inclusion screamed out at us, from the screen, as being intentionally forced for its gratuitous sexual shock value, alone. But I'd say that was at least "comedically forgivable", at best. (?/😂) What was UNFORGIVABLE were the CONSTANT, unforced errors - primarily, for instance, that of their absolute refusal to actually suspend disbelief (which is what allows us to even enjoy any movie in the first place), by constantly (and proactively) inserting ABSOLUTE bullshit happenings and character choices into pretty much the entire movie's runtime. Hugely ruinous to any such movie that might otherwise hold legitimately major merit.
Ridley Scott himself is a mixed bag. He made three of the greatest films ever made: Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator. But he also made a whole lot of other garbage.
I think Blade Runner is good, though it's definitely not a movie that I'd feel the need to rewatch... and I feel the critical and box office reception the film initially got was probably more indicative of its quality than the cult following it has since received, but it is 10x better than the beautiful, but lame 2049 they tried to pull on us. As for Alien and Gladiator. They are masterpieces. Alien is my favourite film ever made. Scott has fallen off hard since 2007. The Martian is the only film of his that I have liked in almost twenty years.

People came into Prometheus expecting an Alien movie when it never was. It featured a proto Xenomorph but that’s it. It’s a good movie if you rightfully divorce it from the Alien franchise in your mind.
I came into that movie seeking answers about that creature I saw in silly movies killing people randomly. This is actually what got me into alien because before that, alien was Texas chainsaw in space
Fun fact: I've seen "Alien" dozens of times and while I was fascinated by that giant guy in the giant chair - I never thought: "That would make a movie". I fundamentally disagree with the idea of most prequels as explain-it-alls. Sometimes what's in our heads is endlessly more fascinating. I don't need to know about the space jockey or the clone wars. I want creative minds to expand ideas, tell fresh stories. Not every friggin little detail of beloved films explained. And just as an edit: That doesn't mean all prequels or explainining films are bad, "Rogue One" for example did that fairly well.

The people complaining are essentially james cameron alienS 1986 fans. They want the return of colonial marines and hate everything ridley scott is involved with because they think he is the one blocking their action flick from coming back (alien 5 neil blomkamp) when the studios just realize it will be shit and wont sell tickets. They think by hating prometheus, covenant, and now romulus online, they will influence the studios into making what they want.
yep, pretty much. Fox mishandled the series after 1986. Romulus isn't perfect by any means, but it was a breath of fresh air after Covenant. And thats coming from someone who would LOVE a xeno-less, world building story (which im hoping the TV series does).

In all honesty, I kinda like Prometheus mainly for the fact that it can be its own thing, whilst containing little nods to the Alien franchise. And with it not being a direct prequel, it doesn’t run the risk of retroactively retconning the lore of the Xenomorphs (at least in my opinion). It’s just a shame that Covenant completely botched that potential, by having David be the supposed creator of the Aliens. Maybe it could’ve worked had he created a variant species like say the Ultramorphs ( one of the proposed Aliens used for one of the drafts for Prometheus), and have the Xenomorphs as a naturally formed species all together. But still, what Covenant presented was the by far the biggest sin in the eyes of the entire fan base.
That it's true. Covenant is the result of Fox putting pressure to transform it into an Alien's movie. I remember that Covenant was initially named Prometheus Paradise.
David isn’t the creator of the Alien, the engineers already knew about them, that the black goo’s life cycle ends there. David just made his own version of the classic Xenos thinking he was the one who actually created them.
Prometheus would be a one-timer if it had avoided Alien lore. That fact that it tarnished Alien lore isn't bad for how it affect the initial entry as that had already been done if not with A3, then definitely with A4, but is bad for how it affected Prometheus. Prometheus would've gotten off lightly if it wasn't connected to Alien, but trying to take of the reins of a dead franchise put a lot of necessary pressure on the quality of thi film, which was left very wanting. I saw this film in theatres and I regret it. I was so hyped being a massive Alien fan. I spent literal months on the fan website for the film checking out every bit of news. I thought it would not only revolutionize the franchise/genre, but film itself. Yeah... I was a lot more optimistic in 2012.
This video hasn't aged well, because Romulus very well acknowledged Prometheus and tied it into the Alien universe. The prequel series isn't killed, if it's still very relevant to Romulus. It would be killed however, if Romulus chose to ignore Prometheus, and Covenant from the continuity.
Ridley scott is executive producer and alvarez admires him. And romulus is a massive success. Haters will keep screaming but we can safely ignore them😁

Expanding the backstory of an originally opaque but beloved horror movie creature doesn't necessarily give off the pay out you'd expect - hollywood producers, writers and directors seem to be slow to figure this out. "Less is more" doesn't simply apply to the camerawork on creature-features but it also applies to horror movie lore itself. Give people just enough to fill the void with their own injected horror backstories and this makes for interesting water-cooler talk - studios trying to cash in on IP and inject new backstories decades after the original beloved movies run the risk of upsetting legions of longtime fans who are ready to pick apart anything that doesn't make sense. Edit: Does anyone really care about the alien bodybuilder "engineers" and their homeworld politics? Does anyone care about the conflicts or civil wars on the Predator world? Big predators vs bigger predators subspecies? Dont think so 😂

I will say that I don't 100%, please I'm bringing your philosophy because the problem is not that the aliens origin is explored. The problem is is that all the answers we get are lame. Honestly, I think a really good horror sequel or series is something that the more you explain what's going on, the more horrifying everything becomes and you kind of like almost don't want to know more because you can't imagine how it literally keeps getting more horrific.

Hopefully this doesn’t get buried, but I only seen aliens as a kid and somehow I entirely missed that Prometheus was a sequel to the first alien movie so when I thought that my friends were just dragging me to another sci-fi horror movie, I was like meh okay. Totally took me by surprise when the xenomorph appeared at the last second
Alien (1979) made nowhere NEAR $118 million on its opening weekend - try ~$3.5 million instead. Even adjusting for inflation it's WAYYY less than $118 million.
I'm a casual Alien fan at best but I think what makes the series special had absolutely nothing to do with where the Xenomorph came from. I think Ridley Scott thought more people would be interested in that backstory when in reality, most audiences weren't and just wanted to see something similar to the original film, it's why Romulus looks so promising

Why do you think David created the xenomorph? He created one form of a xenomorph. The mutation engine also existed before David. He just iterated on one xeno design. Look at he mural in the derelict ship in Prometheus. The Xenomorph-like form has existed for millennia, maybe even longer.

@@Deepseashark The rest of the prequels were scrapped, so the origin story was scrapped. The alien David made wasn't a Xenomorph, it was come to be known as a Protomorph with several noticeable differences to the Xeno we know. For starters, the chestburster with its long arms and legs opposed to the snake-like chestbuster. The Protomorph being more feral, and less armored looking than the Xeno. The questions will never be answered so there are only theories - either David continued perfecting the alien into the version we know, or he was recreating it. The scrapped sequel to Covenant would likely have explained this since they planned to take it to LV-426 where the crashed derelict ship with a cargo hold full of eggs was in Alien.
I believe the original idea for the pilot was it was like a part of the ship. Like a genetically engineered pilot linked directly to the ship that never left. The whole thing of it being a space suit was a retcon that I believe will be retconned back in future entries.
All Prometheus problems would have been fixed if they had made the planet LV 446. Here are two small changes Change 1, The map takes them to another world lets say LV 223 and then they are redirected from there to LV 446, that way the company would never have had the location of LV 446. Change 2, When the Space Jockey takes off at the end a chest buster bursts out of his chest (this is why he was in hyper sleep) causing him to crash his ship, hitting Prometheus as it does. Prometheus reactor would then explode. This would set up the alien ship and state of LV 446 for Alien. Shaw and David would take off on the only other ship to go to the Engineer home world.
I forgot who said it but theres a great metaphor of someone trying to find out how a drum works so they rip it open, and in the process they find nothing inside, while also ruining the drum. That kinda applies here. Part of the beauty/horror of the xenomorphs is that they're mysterious and we dont know what they are.
The alien prequels failed because of the hubris of the Director thinking he didn’t need to get good writers for a story he was making up as he went along. Particularly he abandoned the idea that the films exist in a hard science fiction world. Real physics, real consequences, intellectual situations, thought-provoking philosophy, etc. what we got instead was people who don’t know how to turn 90° when something is falling on them, teams of scientists who touch things on alien planets they’ve never been to, don’t wear masks, and bring back samples without thinking Keep in mind that the person who made the scene in the second movie of the colonists, walking around a completely alien planet, that they never even intended to land upon without any concern for safety was the very same guy that directed the scene in the original alien movie where there is a standoff between the away team desperately trying to get back inside the ship after one of the crew has been attacked by a creature with the people on the inside of the ship absolutely refusing to let them contaminate the ship. The latter is an incredibly tension filled scene exploring a panicking fearful mindset versus a scientific protective mindset and the difficult decision of the unknown risks, while the former is just a pile of dog ssht where the writers had to move the story forward and was so lazy they just wrote the first thing that came to mind. That Scott allowed this is why it failed and he is a garbage director for even considering it. And yeah normally the director can’t affect the script that much the script but Scott had total control of these films
I also had problems with the scientists who went to the planet without protective suits. In large part, you could rely on the concept that creatures that develop in other ecosystems are extremely unlikely to develop diseases that are compatible with your biology. But especially when they saw things like wheat on the planet they should have known there could be crossover. Having said that, the Alien universe has never been scientifically plausible. A creature with a head that big and a neck that small doesn't make sense. A "perfect" organism wouldn't drool that much. Very inefficient. How does it grow so quickly without eating anything? Where does it get the material to secrete all of their lair without eating anything? They don't even eat the bodies they incubate in.
The Covenant landing ship, just like what happened in Prometheus, is giving a very thorough, detailed analysis of the planet's atmosphere via state-of-the-art scanning technology, read aloud as they disembark and cross-referenced by a top-of-the-line android. If they cannot trust that both of those deem the atmosphere breathable and free of contaminants, they might as well pack up, turn around and go home. Obviously either the ship had no way of detecting tiny buds of alien plant life hundreds of meters to miles away and deducing that it contained a substance coccooned within it that released an unstable mutagenic virus. OR... the company knew or suspected ahead of time that such life existed on the planet and directed the crew there to be deliberately infected, withholding the information and having their synthetic guide them towards it to ensure contamination... None of the crew - bar possibly Walter - have any idea whatsoever that alien life exists, and have no reason to suspect or anticipate it. They haven't seen the Alien franchise themselves. Shaw and Vickers DID turn at a right angle to escape the ship, but it keeled after them shortly thereafter, and they didn't realise til it was too late for one of them.
@@wrnjxn7131 yes, but my point is that they could explain things with all the things you said, or they could have a scene where there is some debate amongst the crew… Maybe they don’t have the right equipment because of a mistake, maybe somebody does use the equipment and they want the crew to wait until they’re complete, but everyone is impatient and response to peer pressure. These are the kind of scenes that should have been in that film to make it better writing. ( and they very nearly did have this… I expect in one draft or another there may have may have been a little bit of additional explanation. It’s clear they didn’t really have a choice to land on that planet. They had to make the best of a bad situation, but what I am annoyed with is that everybody just kind of shrugged and said OK whatever… YOLO” Which is not even remotely close to the level of writing of the first and second movies. It’s lazy and Scott’s portrayal of the events is also lazy. Prometheus and covenant are written with filler to justify the scenes rather than core human interactions that create the scenes. Not all of them are bad… In fact, I still enjoy Prometheus quite a bit. ( I would say that it’s probably time for third place in the entire series for me. It is hands down better than Alien 4 in my book and is in some ways better than Alien 3 ) Also, it is the fault of the Director to even create a situation in Prometheus where they are seeming to do a “stupid thing” like running the wrong direction. If that were the only thing that was written poorly in the film then I would never have criticized it.

And as I said, Shaw and Vickers absolutely DO turn, with a very clear shot showing them doing so, but since it's fairly quick and paired with a stylistic dynamic camera pivot, many people missed it. Many of tham were already viewing the film through a negative lens after having their expectations subverted and had mentally checked out that late in the runtime, causing negative confirmation bias. They wanted to hate it.

I really want a third Prometheus / Covenant film - BUT, focussing on the Engineers! I’m far more interested in the wider world / lore of this universe & the Engineers than watching another jumpscare alien film

Honestly I’ll say killing the prequel trilogy was the right call. I mean it’s nice that these prequels were deeply personal for Scott and he was trying to discover things through them. But I probably wouldn’t have given him hundreds of millions for him to do that. The prequel movies were just kind of a mess. Best to just let it end.
yep... for me Prometheus was $200M Ancient Aliens therapy for Scott. It's bizarre that someone who was so critical to the initial success of the story, could so fundamentally misunderstand what made the first film so great. There're a lot of good comments here describing why this film is a big miss, but when it comes down it, they took an intellectual existential horror about truly unknown threats beyond reach and grasp, and made it into a schlocky personal take on Chariots of the Gods by Scott... and that doesn't even address the Space Jockey in the room; that the whole reason the Squidward aliens are mad is because we humans wrongly crucified Jesus... who yep you guessed it... was an Engineer.
Yeah but now under Disney we will only continue getting remakes about nostalgia. We already saw this with Alien Romulus. Scott atleast had a vision, albeit a very flawed one, for his franchise. Now that he‘s out I‘m certain this franchise is dead creatively and will remain so. Alvarez made Romulus as a fan and into a fan film, it‘s nothing more than that sadly. Scotts prequels atleast brought new stuff to the franchise.
The prequels undermine the original films so much. Making the space jokey a bald guy in a suit. Connecting them to human history and origins. Making the Xenomorphs just products made by the engineers. The story that thinks it's far more intelligent than it is. I'm so glad Disney ditched it.
But out of all the films is the most intelligent one. There's nothing to think about when you're just watching a horror flick. Alien was getting the potential to be more than just a Common horror flick with dumb character portrayals but of course the general audience didn't want that.
General audience also doesn't need a religious cosmological diatribe inspired by frustrations with human religion rather than actual interesting things. I think there is room for both intelligence and entertainment. However if you have to sacrifice one for the other you MUST remember to sacrifice intelligence. The real smart thing is to entertain. Creating a world of possibilities is more original then a copy paste of every ancient aliens history channel episode and occult fascination. While it's interesting. It's NOT as interesting as they think it is. And it's far from original. Just go down the Illuminati, ufo, ancient aliens rabbit hole, or even dig into the lore of Metroid with the Chozo and you will find this idea of Prometheus is anything but original and just a retelling of every single star seeding story and religious text. Derivative and boring. Better off put into a documentary, or funneled into the back story of books and games. But completely useless for entertaining an audience in a MOVIE theatre. Agreed. No intelligent species makes a weapon they cannot control. The idea that WY would turn the xenomorphs INTO weapons was the right avenue of thought. Prometheus just never put all the puzzle pieces together. Making David a knowing, arch villain was also too much.
I agree, Ridley Scott ironically ruined one of his greatest works by trying to turn it into something it was never going to be. We watch these films for the alien, not philosophy.
Alien Romulus was such a success that I can see Ridley Scott with the help of Alvarez getting another shot at another Alien movie that will fill in the missing gaps of the prequels.
The first two prequels already destroyed the lore and anything interesting about the original Alien film… While Scott’s directing prowess of bringing the best people together can not be questioned, O’Bannon was the driving creative force of every great decision with Alien (Story, Script, Body Horror, and bringing Moebius and HR Giger on the film). I only wish Disney had the power to axe the prequels before production began.
the other mistake after Aliens is that the xenomorph becomes "just a monster" rather than a creature with more to it. "They cut the power" "How could they cut the power they're animals" - No, they are more they can communicate and that makes them even more terrifying.
It's not the same kind of Xeno as seen in the original. It's a 'Protomorph', designed and honed by David over the course of many experimentations with the black goo as he stewed in isolation for years on the Engineer planet. That's why it's more aggressive, physically imposing, nimble, seemingly more clever, leaner, so on.

My problem was it removed the mystery of Alien 1 and I don’t like the idea that Xenomorphs are artificially made. I always liked the idea they evolved into the way they are.
I never understood why people feel that the Prometheus and Covenant movies are not really connected to the original Alien series. The two prequels are explicitly about the intersections between terraforming, biology and technology--themes of the first four movies--and how the Xenomorph fits into that. Scott makes that VERY clear in his prequels, both in terms of dialog and scenes.

Prometheus should’ve just been its own original Science-Fiction franchise. Kind of being the new Alien, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, John Carter, & more. I would’ve totally been a fan of the Prometheus Franchise/Prometheus Universe. Prometheus Prometheus 2 Prometheus 3 Prometheus 4 Prometheus 5 Prometheus 6 & Prometheus 7. Or, I think Ridley Scott should’ve done a Blade Runner sequel if he wanted to do more A.I. then Alien, maybe link up both the Blade Runner franchise with Alien. Would’ve been a cool idea

It’s like if movies make poor choices in color correction, suddenly the studios, directors, and actors suddenly claim their films won’t use color correction as if audiences were clamoring for studios to stop the practice. That’s NOT the case. Audiences recoil from poor color correction, not the existence of it all together. I don’t think audiences have an issue with CGI as a facet of moviemaking. It’s when it’s done badly, or relied upon too much by lazy directors, that audiences tire of it. Just as moviemakers will never claim their pictures use no color correction, the same folks need to stop claiming their movies no longer involve CGI. We know that’s not true and they know that’s not true . No one is fooling anyone. 🙄
I hate that Covenant has only CG aliens, even in the close up shots. It just looks cartoonish like everything else these days. Especially all the drippy gooeyness, it looks shallow. The Alien franchise has always had practical effects with gooey, wet stuff. Covenant completely deleted that and it bothers me when I watch it.

Prometheus and Covenant are the 2 movies I've seen the most in the franchise. I love most of it, from the perspective of creator to the relationship David has with women or his god complex. I just can't understand why people are so into the very same recipe with xenomorphs, I love other Alien movies but you got to know better about the cosmogony of the Alien Universe, and it could lead to so many paths with other unkwon civilizations created by Engineers. I want to see the war between David and them. Michael Fassbender's cold energy is the best fit for such a character and ambitions. I've been expecting Romulus, but I really can't get over Prometheus 2/ Lost Paradise/ Alien Engineers.
I would've loved to see a continuation of Prometheus, the grand ideas, who were the aliens, then adding into the mix the Predators and this could've turned into one hell of a series.
I would argue a problem is it wasn't sold as a trilogy. Also Prometheus was a story that could have gone somewhere and didn't require the typical Aliens from the films. Instead the story Prometheus set up felt betrayed and ignored by the supposed sequel Alien: Covenant. Alien: Covenant went down the unneeded Alien rabbit hole and killed the story as it was developing as it did so. Want to sink a story, change it midstream and show viewers they have no reason to have paid attention during the 1st film.
I loved the unanswered questions in the original _Alien._ Not knowing the backstory of the Xenomorph or Space Jockey was a crucial element that gave me fantastic cosmic horror vibes. No answer could fill that gap in a satisfying way. And I'd be open to exploring some religious themes, as _Prometheus_ attempted. But that attempt stuck me as, frankly, kind of mindless and shallow.
Prometheus could have been so good, yet it fell short due to poor story structure. The Engineers are intriguing and more than deserve future exploration. I hope we see them again in the future. But as for Androids and A.I, i think that Ridley Scott's fixation with it is not only getting in the way of his work, but it is starting to boarder on obsession, which is seldom a good thing.

5:00 I loved Prometheus. I saw it in theaters early on and I didn’t notice any of the criticisms until much later. It wasn’t until I was made aware of the flaws of the movie that I began to notice them at all. I think this is a situation where critics did more harm than good, and influenced movie goer’s opinions of the film going in. Unfortunately the next movie made so many unnecessary changes to appease critics that it ended up flopping. I wish they’d stuck to their vision.

The biggest spoof in movie sequel history was to let Prometheus end with Dr. Shaw taking off to a journey to face the creators of mankind and then Noomi Rapace wasnt even appearing as an actor in Alien Covenant. Wasnt there one single sane person involved in the decision process??
Despite the flaws, I’m really interested to see how Sir Ridley would finish his trilogy. IMO he should collaborate with Alan Dean Foster and novelize the third film as he envisioned it. We’d see how it ends and it would be relatively cheap. The theater of the mind has a limitless budget.
Why is it "Disney" that we are discussing? It was not Disney that decided to go in a disastrous, barely connected prequel trilogy about an android, and still call it Alien, it was Ridley Scott. He made 2 movies that very nearly made sure that no more Alien movie would ever be greenlit. I do not think people had enough of Alien, they have had enough of Sir Ridley's "visions" going in the wrong direction. I would be the last person to try to excuse Disney for all its crimes, but this one is not on them. It's on the people all over the globe who automatically believed that if Sir Ridley did it, it would be a great Alien movie.

Prometheus was one of the best movies of the franchise with deeper story than “spooky monster kills incompetent crew”. They should have stuck with their guns and kept with the original Prometheus script, and then gone further with Paradise Lost and the 3rd film. Those sound like actual interesting stories. Braindead spooky monster jumpscare movies are boring.

I like both movies, despite their flaws. It does the legacy-prequel thing better than any other blockbuster of the past 10 years. The mythology is interesting and David is a fascinating character. I wish we had a proper conclusion to that storyline.
My biggest unpopular opinion is that I loved Prometheus. I hadn't seen anything about it before watching the movie, so i only discovered it was part of the Alien franchise while watching the film (I also hadn't seen the original in a long time). Interestingly, everyone I've spoke yo that didn't know it was part of the franchise going in loves the movie. But people who knew it was a prequel hated it. 😅🤷♀️
I knew it was a prequel to the Alien franchise and I actually liked Prometheus and Covenant! obviously it was a different tone from the Alien movies from the past even as far as the technology and design, but It was refreshing to see another created thing (being David) being a huge threat to humanity.

I just finished watching all of the Alien movies (minus AvP and AvP2) in preparation for seeing Alien Romulus and I'd say I enjoyed Prometheus and Covenant. They both try to be a cinematic epic, like David's beloved Lawrence of Arabia, but neither can quite hit that mark when they are also trying to be the horror/action movies that the original Alien movies were. Ultimately they are good movies that just don't fit in with the other Alien films. It would've been interesting to see what Ridley would've come up with if he wasn't beholden to the desires of the studios.
I would preffered to have seen the covenant sequel over what we are getting now. I at least hope that there are some links to Davids storyline in what we get in Romulus.

They had planned for the living Engineer to have more time. It included dialogue that revealed that the reason they were headed to Earth to wipe out humanity 2000 years ago was in retaliation for humans killing Christ. Christ had been put on the Earth by the engineers to try to save humanity from themselves, to show them how to be less violent and terrible. When humans killed Christ, the Engineers decided it was time to end the experiment. This is often part of the whole Annunaki trope. Naturally, they scrapped that idea at the last minute. It would have been too divisive.
Completely agree. It's why the deleted scene with the Last Engineer and David talking to each other is so popular. Being able to directly confront our creators with the questions we've always had about our existence and where we come from is so much more interesting than taking the Engineer and turning him into a rampaging monster. All of the Engineer scenes in Prometheus as it stands would be so much better if the creature was allowed to be more of a character rather than reducing it to a rampaging monster.

Exactly. The films would’ve been way more compelling if they delved into the Weyland/Weyland-Yutani Corporation’s evolution, discovery of the Alien species (through which they could’ve perhaps explored the “engineer” species) and this inevitably leading into their stitch up of the Nostromo crew.
What few people get is that the Alien is merely a MacGuffin. The antagonist is (or at least was in Alien and Alien 3) the Company, callously throwing its employees at it with all the androids they put amongst the humans steering things towards their desired ends.

Prometheus was the best thing to happen to the franchise in decades. Absolute shame they got cold feet and changed direction with the lacklustre Covenant. The epic scale of the story Prometheus introduced was a fantastic foundation for a whole new trilogy. It deserved more. And also, less dumb characters.

I’m down for them to pretend nothing after Prometheus happened and go back the original idea.
Giger's original design was demonic looking, sexual, lethal and very mysterious. That mystery has been lost turning him into just some kind of insect or weapon when there should be a very dark and ancient mystery to him and his origins.
It’s tough to agree with your opinion, but you’re right. I think the mystery aspect keeps people more interested. Once you have the knowledge you seek, it’s like okay, now we know and it’s not the same. Almost like figuring out how all the magic tricks are done. It looses its wow factor.

I don't think it's controversial at all to want a movie in the same universe as Aliens that isn't about the Xenomorphs. The scene in Covenant that shows them arrive at the Engineer homeworld and releasing the black bio-agent was really interesting and thought provoking. Why show a rich, space-faring civilization and society as part of a soundless flashback? Explore that!
It's not controversial to people That love A thought-provoking intelligent sci-fi series. The generic wider audience likes the simple horror Style movie with dumb characters And Disney is just going To milk it to death.
I've said for years that Prometheus deserved it's own separate universe/franchise. Tacking it on to Alien seems like it made both worse and was a transparent grab for a preexisting audience.
I think Prometheus could have worked within the Alien universe. Just because the first film was a haunted house in space doesn't mean that it didn't hint at an interesting universe. That's why Aliens, being more of an action film did a great job expanding that universe. It took what was there and built on it in a way that made sense and was very well written.
Unfortunately, whatever good ideas we're in there (and Prometheus definitely has some good ideas), the execution was so poor that the movie wasn't very good. I think Lindelof destroyed the original script and Scott is too aloof to be calling the shots at this point.

The original “Covenant” and the proposed third film sound like they could’ve been great. Trying to graft things on by committee failed and ditching the two surviving characters from “Prometheus” made “Covenant” come across as more of a reboot

Who made such a creature is NOT the question anyone should ever be asking, this was the mistake. The Alien was scary because we knew nothing about it, it's abilities, it's behavior. But we slowly learned, only to find out that this creature was insanely scary. After Aliens, we still didn't know where they originally came from. Why couldn't the species just be a marvel of evolution on a distant planet? The mystery was half of the tension, when you remove that, you are left with nothing.
Not to mention there are countless stories both in novels and comics that were extremely fascinating that revolved around missions to alien infested worlds to collect 'royal jelly' which would have made for a neat movie in my opinion. To your point, we don't need an origin story, we just need further exploration into the Alien universe.
Kind of like we didn't need to know The Force was midichlorians.
To me its scary cause it has claws, it can bite, it has a sharp and pointy tail, it has acidic blood, it has a facehugger stage where it will again, cause you to have a horrific painful death, it can hide in the dark, its super fast and strong. And you cant negotiate with it. It either eats your face or drags your ass to the hive to make you suffer an even worse death
I remember the first time I watched Alien, my headcanon was purely that the Space Jockey's ship had just been previously taken over by the xenomorphs, much how they later take over the base on LV426 in Aliens. They had nothing to do with them and were just victims of an accident or perhaps their own hubris. This idea that the Space Jockeys "made" the xenomorphs is just kind of ridiculous. It takes the whole thing from a place of Lovecraftian existential dread, and into another tired story about the hubris of scientists taking things too far. Again.

Im a huge fan of both Prometheus and Covenant......and HATE that Scott was never allowed to finish it. I wish he would finish it some form or fashion, no matter if its novel, comic book, video game, short streaming series......WHATEVER......just let it be allowed to be completed. The chilling ending of Covenant with David having access to all the embryo's is such a cliff hanger ......and you really want to see David get his just ending from a villan stand point.

I loved Prometheus, but unfortunately, I'm among the people really disappointed with Covenant. That said, I did think the end of Covenant was a great set up for a third movie. The idea of David with a whole ship of humans to experiment on had me excited for the next movie even though I wasn't that enthused about the one I had just watched.

Prometheus was awesome. Too bad Ridley Scott couldn't buckle down and give us a true sequel instead of Alien Covenant of Trash. Prometheus actually tried to expand the scope of the franchise, and it made for an entertaining and compelling watch.

To me that was part of the problem. They changed it mid way through and then tried to backtrack. It feels like two heads on one body trying to go their own direction. Both decent on their own but choppy and contradicting together.

And if you're familiar with Damon Lindeloff, the way he leaves the characters with none of their questions answered and even more new ones is brilliant. Part of what made the original so good was the unknown, which is why Covenant was such a blunder by Fox.
But they were more than happy to hint at it to try and sponge off the Alien fanbase.

This happens SO much in films. You get decades worth of amazing comics and novels that could be easily adapted, but then the newfangled film version (like Star Wars) goes off in some new direction and ignores all the fantastic ideas it could have reused.

I quite like what Covenant did in some regards, and I love the Xenomorph, but the film tried to balance the 2 elements (Prometheus and Alien) in a sloppy way. Everything with David was fascinating. The opening scene with Peter was one of the best. But that xenomorph ending felt slapped on and rushed and kinda lame. I still want a 3rd movie, though. I love the lore of the Engineers.
I watched the death of the prequel trilogy before my very eyes. Scott famously said in an interview pre-Prometheus' release that the film had "strands of Alien's DNA in it." After the film came out, I saw the internet replete with "wtf, where were the Aliens!?" So the studio panicked, moved Scott's plan up to xenomorphs in the second film. And after it came out, the internet was once again filled with moaning, this time about wanting to know more about the Engineers. There is no winning when you knee-jerk so quickly to the computer masses. Was either film as good as Scott's original or Cameron's? Of course not, but the failures are only partially on the finished films as well...
I think we're all rightfully stoked for Romulus, but I forsee a similar fate for Alien: Earth. The writing's on the wall just with the show title and purported subject material. If I wanted corporate espionage and android origins I'd ask for a Bladerunner tv series.
Never hire David Lindelof if you have any plans on ever making a sequel or want any any cohesive endings for that matter.

Both prequels are great from start to finish, and have a surprising amount of support. Prometheus in particular made a rather respectable amount of money back. Since Romulus is getting such an overall great, crowd-pleasing reception and raking in the dough, after the TV series is sorted we may yet see a proper conclusion to the trilogy after all.

Because Covenant was horrible decision after horrible decision. I finished prometheus and despite its flaws I wanted to know what happened to Shaw and David and how would the so call "premorph" would play. then it came out and every single character was a moron and importan scenes where left on firkin RUclips. I never felt this angry at a decision to put important information outside of the movie that I would not have figure out if not from commentary and reviewers talking about it.

I hate how movies now always make the highly educated scientists overall morons. What you do is make them smart in certain regard and area sa but make them flawed, maybe even deeply flawed. Make them the do do math well, make them Sherlockian deductive genius, make them have the tech or CompSci genius but, at the same time give them a flaw like, they cant talk to people, hate people, arrogant, a virgin who is easily seduced, a racist/sexist, a furry. Also, said comics detailed where the aliens come from. And made them WAY more terrifying because they are shown to not even be apex predators on their home world. There are things that hunt xenomorphs as prey. Which also goes a long way to explain their general hostility.

It's interesting how it's completely different with the Predator: there is lots of source material and canon exploring their society, species and habits. But I agree, the mystery was half of the terror. But as I already mentioned elsewhere.... you can't just repeat the same story about a couple of humans meeting an alien, getting killed off one by one and not knowing what to do or underestimating it, again & again. Don't MacGyver it. So I can understand the decision to dive into the origin. I don't agree with all of it - much is still unknown and I just ignore that David created the Alien - but I can understand why they did it. But as usual, the original "Alien" is now old enough that they decided it would bring in enough cash to do a remake for the current generation - many of them don't want to watch movies from almost 40 years ago and most only know/saw the recent ones.

Thank you for telling the true story. I hate when people lump Prometheus and Covenant together as "Ridley Scott's fault" when they're literally polar opposites: one an ambitious new story set in the same universe that went over people's heads and another riddled with studio notes and Alien references with the subtlety of a brick. Whoever at Disney cancelled Scott's plans to bring back the intrigue of the Androids and Engineers clearly didn't do their homework on whose fault it actually was.
Despite its flaws I liked Prometheus and was intrigued by where it would go, but Covenant was such a disappointment as both a Prometheus sequel and an Alien prequel it almost felt Scott had made the film out of spite.

What was UNFORGIVABLE were the CONSTANT, unforced errors - primarily, for instance, that of their absolute refusal to actually suspend disbelief (which is what allows us to even enjoy any movie in the first place), by constantly (and proactively) inserting ABSOLUTE bullshit happenings and character choices into pretty much the entire movie's runtime.
Hugely ruinous to any such movie that might otherwise hold legitimately major merit.

Ridley Scott himself is a mixed bag. He made three of the greatest films ever made: Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator. But he also made a whole lot of other garbage.
I completely agree. IMO he is the most overrated film director of all time.
I think Blade Runner is good, though it's definitely not a movie that I'd feel the need to rewatch... and I feel the critical and box office reception the film initially got was probably more indicative of its quality than the cult following it has since received, but it is 10x better than the beautiful, but lame 2049 they tried to pull on us. As for Alien and Gladiator. They are masterpieces. Alien is my favourite film ever made. Scott has fallen off hard since 2007. The Martian is the only film of his that I have liked in almost twenty years.

People came into Prometheus expecting an Alien movie when it never was. It featured a proto Xenomorph but that’s it. It’s a good movie if you rightfully divorce it from the Alien franchise in your mind.
I came into that movie seeking answers about that creature I saw in silly movies killing people randomly. This is actually what got me into alien because before that, alien was Texas chainsaw in space
Fun fact: I've seen "Alien" dozens of times and while I was fascinated by that giant guy in the giant chair - I never thought: "That would make a movie".
I fundamentally disagree with the idea of most prequels as explain-it-alls. Sometimes what's in our heads is endlessly more fascinating. I don't need to know about the space jockey or the clone wars. I want creative minds to expand ideas, tell fresh stories. Not every friggin little detail of beloved films explained.
And just as an edit: That doesn't mean all prequels or explainining films are bad, "Rogue One" for example did that fairly well.

They want the return of colonial marines and hate everything ridley scott is involved with because they think he is the one blocking their action flick from coming back (alien 5 neil blomkamp) when the studios just realize it will be shit and wont sell tickets. They think by hating prometheus, covenant, and now romulus online, they will influence the studios into making what they want.
yep, pretty much. Fox mishandled the series after 1986. Romulus isn't perfect by any means, but it was a breath of fresh air after Covenant. And thats coming from someone who would LOVE a xeno-less, world building story (which im hoping the TV series does).

In all honesty, I kinda like Prometheus mainly for the fact that it can be its own thing, whilst containing little nods to the Alien franchise. And with it not being a direct prequel, it doesn’t run the risk of retroactively retconning the lore of the Xenomorphs (at least in my opinion).
It’s just a shame that Covenant completely botched that potential, by having David be the supposed creator of the Aliens.
Maybe it could’ve worked had he created a variant species like say the Ultramorphs ( one of the proposed Aliens used for one of the drafts for Prometheus), and have the Xenomorphs as a naturally formed species all together.
But still, what Covenant presented was the by far the biggest sin in the eyes of the entire fan base.
That it's true. Covenant is the result of Fox putting pressure to transform it into an Alien's movie. I remember that Covenant was initially named Prometheus Paradise.
David isn’t the creator of the Alien, the engineers already knew about them, that the black goo’s life cycle ends there. David just made his own version of the classic Xenos thinking he was the one who actually created them.
Prometheus would be a one-timer if it had avoided Alien lore. That fact that it tarnished Alien lore isn't bad for how it affect the initial entry as that had already been done if not with A3, then definitely with A4, but is bad for how it affected Prometheus. Prometheus would've gotten off lightly if it wasn't connected to Alien, but trying to take of the reins of a dead franchise put a lot of necessary pressure on the quality of thi film, which was left very wanting. I saw this film in theatres and I regret it. I was so hyped being a massive Alien fan. I spent literal months on the fan website for the film checking out every bit of news. I thought it would not only revolutionize the franchise/genre, but film itself. Yeah... I was a lot more optimistic in 2012.
Prometheus was a masterpiece, and Covenant was great. It sucks that we'll never get to see the original creators vision come to life.

Expanding the backstory of an originally opaque but beloved horror movie creature doesn't necessarily give off the pay out you'd expect - hollywood producers, writers and directors seem to be slow to figure this out.
"Less is more" doesn't simply apply to the camerawork on creature-features but it also applies to horror movie lore itself.
Give people just enough to fill the void with their own injected horror backstories and this makes for interesting water-cooler talk - studios trying to cash in on IP and inject new backstories decades after the original beloved movies run the risk of upsetting legions of longtime fans who are ready to pick apart anything that doesn't make sense.

I will say that I don't 100%, please I'm bringing your philosophy because the problem is not that the aliens origin is explored. The problem is is that all the answers we get are lame. Honestly, I think a really good horror sequel or series is something that the more you explain what's going on, the more horrifying everything becomes and you kind of like almost don't want to know more because you can't imagine how it literally keeps getting more horrific.

I'm a casual Alien fan at best but I think what makes the series special had absolutely nothing to do with where the Xenomorph came from. Why do you think David created the xenomorph? He created one form of a xenomorph. The mutation engine also existed before David. He just iterated on one xeno design. Look at he mural in the derelict ship in Prometheus. The Xenomorph-like form has existed for millennia, maybe even longer.

The alien David made wasn't a Xenomorph, it was come to be known as a Protomorph with several noticeable differences to the Xeno we know. For starters, the chestburster with its long arms and legs opposed to the snake-like chestbuster. The Protomorph being more feral, and less armored looking than the Xeno.
The questions will never be answered so there are only theories - either David continued perfecting the alien into the version we know, or he was recreating it.
The scrapped sequel to Covenant would likely have explained this since they planned to take it to LV-426 where the crashed derelict ship with a cargo hold full of eggs was in Alien.
I believe the original idea for the pilot was it was like a part of the ship. Like a genetically engineered pilot linked directly to the ship that never left. The whole thing of it being a space suit was a retcon that I believe will be retconned back in future entries.
All Prometheus problems would have been fixed if they had made the planet LV 446.
Here are two small changes
Change 1, The map takes them to another world lets say LV 223 and then they are redirected from there to LV 446, that way the company would never have had the location of LV 446.
Change 2, When the Space Jockey takes off at the end a chest buster bursts out of his chest (this is why he was in hyper sleep) causing him to crash his ship, hitting Prometheus as it does. Prometheus reactor would then explode.
This would set up the alien ship and state of LV 446 for Alien.
Shaw and David would take off on the only other ship to go to the Engineer home world.
I like to think LV-426 is the planet in Covenant
I forgot who said it but theres a great metaphor of someone trying to find out how a drum works so they rip it open, and in the process they find nothing inside, while also ruining the drum. That kinda applies here. Part of the beauty/horror of the xenomorphs is that they're mysterious and we dont know what they are.

The alien prequels failed because of the hubris of the Director thinking he didn’t need to get good writers for a story he was making up as he went along. Particularly he abandoned the idea that the films exist in a hard science fiction world. Real physics, real consequences, intellectual situations, thought-provoking philosophy, etc. what we got instead was people who don’t know how to turn 90° when something is falling on them, teams of scientists who touch things on alien planets they’ve never been to, don’t wear masks, and bring back samples without thinking
Keep in mind that the person who made the scene in the second movie of the colonists, walking around a completely alien planet, that they never even intended to land upon without any concern for safety was the very same guy that directed the scene in the original alien movie where there is a standoff between the away team desperately trying to get back inside the ship after one of the crew has been attacked by a creature with the people on the inside of the ship absolutely refusing to let them contaminate the ship.
The latter is an incredibly tension filled scene exploring a panicking fearful mindset versus a scientific protective mindset and the difficult decision of the unknown risks, while the former is just a pile of dog ssht where the writers had to move the story forward and was so lazy they just wrote the first thing that came to mind.
That Scott allowed this is why it failed and he is a garbage director for even considering it. And yeah normally the director can’t affect the script that much the script but Scott had total control of these films
I also had problems with the scientists who went to the planet without protective suits. In large part, you could rely on the concept that creatures that develop in other ecosystems are extremely unlikely to develop diseases that are compatible with your biology. But especially when they saw things like wheat on the planet they should have known there could be crossover.
Having said that, the Alien universe has never been scientifically plausible. A creature with a head that big and a neck that small doesn't make sense. A "perfect" organism wouldn't drool that much. Very inefficient. How does it grow so quickly without eating anything? Where does it get the material to secrete all of their lair without eating anything? They don't even eat the bodies they incubate in.
The Covenant landing ship, just like what happened in Prometheus, is giving a very thorough, detailed analysis of the planet's atmosphere via state-of-the-art scanning technology, read aloud as they disembark and cross-referenced by a top-of-the-line android. If they cannot trust that both of those deem the atmosphere breathable and free of contaminants, they might as well pack up, turn around and go home.
Obviously either the ship had no way of detecting tiny buds of alien plant life hundreds of meters to miles away and deducing that it contained a substance coccooned within it that released an unstable mutagenic virus.
OR... the company knew or suspected ahead of time that such life existed on the planet and directed the crew there to be deliberately infected, withholding the information and having their synthetic guide them towards it to ensure contamination...
None of the crew - bar possibly Walter - have any idea whatsoever that alien life exists, and have no reason to suspect or anticipate it. They haven't seen the Alien franchise themselves.
Shaw and Vickers DID turn at a right angle to escape the ship, but it keeled after them shortly thereafter, and they didn't realise til it was too late for one of them.

These are the kind of scenes that should have been in that film to make it better writing. Which is not even remotely close to the level of writing of the first and second movies. It’s lazy and Scott’s portrayal of the events is also lazy. Prometheus and covenant are written with filler to justify the scenes rather than core human interactions that create the scenes. Not all of them are bad… In fact, I still enjoy Prometheus quite a bit. ( I would say that it’s probably time for third place in the entire series for me. It is hands down better than Alien 4 in my book and is in some ways better than Alien 3 )
Also, it is the fault of the Director to even create a situation in Prometheus where they are seeming to do a “stupid thing” like running the wrong direction. If that were the only thing that was written poorly in the film then I would never have criticized it.

And as I said, Shaw and Vickers absolutely DO turn, with a very clear shot showing them doing so, but since it's fairly quick and paired with a stylistic dynamic camera pivot, many people missed it. Many of tham were already viewing the film through a negative lens after having their expectations subverted and had mentally checked out that late in the runtime, causing negative confirmation bias. They wanted to hate it.

Honestly I’ll say killing the prequel trilogy was the right call. I mean it’s nice that these prequels were deeply personal for Scott and he was trying to discover things through them. But I probably wouldn’t have given him hundreds of millions for him to do that.

yep... for me Prometheus was $200M Ancient Aliens therapy for Scott. It's bizarre that someone who was so critical to the initial success of the story, could so fundamentally misunderstand what made the first film so great. There're a lot of good comments here describing why this film is a big miss, but when it comes down it, they took an intellectual existential horror about truly unknown threats beyond reach and grasp, and made it into a schlocky personal take on Chariots of the Gods by Scott... and that doesn't even address the Space Jockey in the room; that the whole reason the Squidward aliens are mad is because we humans wrongly crucified Jesus... who yep you guessed it... was an Engineer.
Yeah but now under Disney we will only continue getting remakes about nostalgia. We already saw this with Alien Romulus. Scott atleast had a vision, albeit a very flawed one, for his franchise. Now that he‘s out I‘m certain this franchise is dead creatively and will remain so. Alvarez made Romulus as a fan and into a fan film, it‘s nothing more than that sadly. Scotts prequels atleast brought new stuff to the franchise.

But out of all the films is the most intelligent one. There's nothing to think about when you're just watching a horror flick. Alien was getting the potential to be more than just a Common horror flick with dumb character portrayals but of course the general audience didn't want that.

I think there is room for both intelligence and entertainment. However if you have to sacrifice one for the other you MUST remember to sacrifice intelligence. The real smart thing is to entertain. Creating a world of possibilities is more original then a copy paste of every ancient aliens history channel episode and occult fascination. While it's interesting. It's NOT as interesting as they think it is. And it's far from original. Just go down the Illuminati, ufo, ancient aliens rabbit hole, or even dig into the lore of Metroid with the Chozo and you will find this idea of Prometheus is anything but original and just a retelling of every single star seeding story and religious text. Derivative and boring. Better off put into a documentary, or funneled into the back story of books and games. But completely useless for entertaining an audience in a MOVIE theatre. Agreed. No intelligent species makes a weapon they cannot control. The idea that WY would turn the xenomorphs INTO weapons was the right avenue of thought. Prometheus just never put all the puzzle pieces together. Making David a knowing, arch villain was also too much.

Alien Romulus was such a success that I can see Ridley Scott with the help of Alvarez getting another shot at another Alien movie that will fill in the missing gaps of the prequels.
The first two prequels already destroyed the lore and anything interesting about the original Alien film… While Scott’s directing prowess of bringing the best people together can not be questioned, O’Bannon was the driving creative force of every great decision with Alien (Story, Script, Body Horror, and bringing Moebius and HR Giger on the film). I only wish Disney had the power to axe the prequels before production began.

It's not the same kind of Xeno as seen in the original. It's a 'Protomorph', designed and honed by David over the course of many experimentations with the black goo as he stewed in isolation for years on the Engineer planet. That's why it's more aggressive, physically imposing, nimble, seemingly more clever, leaner, so on.

My problem was it removed the mystery of Alien 1 and I don’t like the idea that Xenomorphs are artificially made. I always liked the idea they evolved into the way they are.
I never understood why people feel that the Prometheus and Covenant movies are not really connected to the original Alien series. The two prequels are explicitly about the intersections between terraforming, biology and technology--themes of the first four movies--and how the Xenomorph fits into that. Scott makes that VERY clear in his prequels, both in terms of dialog and scenes.

It’s like if movies make poor choices in color correction, suddenly the studios, directors, and actors suddenly claim their films won’t use color correction as if audiences were clamoring for studios to stop the practice. That’s NOT the case. Audiences recoil from poor color correction, not the existence of it all together.
I don’t think audiences have an issue with CGI as a facet of moviemaking. It’s when it’s done badly, or relied upon too much by lazy directors, that audiences tire of it.

I hate that Covenant has only CG aliens, even in the close up shots. It just looks cartoonish like everything else these days. Especially all the drippy gooeyness, it looks shallow. The Alien franchise has always had practical effects with gooey, wet stuff. Covenant completely deleted that and it bothers me when I watch it.

Prometheus and Covenant are the 2 movies I've seen the most in the franchise. I love most of it, from the perspective of creator to the relationship David has with women or his god complex. I just can't understand why people are so into the very same recipe with xenomorphs, I love other Alien movies but you got to know better about the cosmogony of the Alien Universe, and it could lead to so many paths with other unkwon civilizations created by Engineers. I want to see the war between David and them. Michael Fassbender's cold energy is the best fit for such a character and ambitions. I've been expecting Romulus, but I really can't get over Prometheus 2/ Lost Paradise/ Alien Engineers.

I would've loved to see a continuation of Prometheus, the grand ideas, who were the aliens, then adding into the mix the Predators and this could've turned into one hell of a series.
I would argue a problem is it wasn't sold as a trilogy. Also Prometheus was a story that could have gone somewhere and didn't require the typical Aliens from the films. Instead the story Prometheus set up felt betrayed and ignored by the supposed sequel Alien: Covenant. Alien: Covenant went down the unneeded Alien rabbit hole and killed the story as it was developing as it did so. Want to sink a story, change it midstream and show viewers they have no reason to have paid attention during the 1st film.
I loved the unanswered questions in the original _Alien._ Not knowing the backstory of the Xenomorph or Space Jockey was a crucial element that gave me fantastic cosmic horror vibes. No answer could fill that gap in a satisfying way. And I'd be open to exploring some religious themes, as _Prometheus_ attempted. But that attempt stuck me as, frankly, kind of mindless and shallow.

5:00 I loved Prometheus. I saw it in theaters early on and I didn’t notice any of the criticisms until much later. It wasn’t until I was made aware of the flaws of the movie that I began to notice them at all. I think this is a situation where critics did more harm than good, and influenced movie goer’s opinions of the film going in. Unfortunately the next movie made so many unnecessary changes to appease critics that it ended up flopping. I wish they’d stuck to their vision.

Despite the flaws, I’m really interested to see how Sir Ridley would finish his trilogy. IMO he should collaborate with Alan Dean Foster and novelize the third film as he envisioned it. We’d see how it ends and it would be relatively cheap. The theater of the mind has a limitless budget.

Why is it "Disney" that we are discussing? It was not Disney that decided to go in a disastrous, barely connected prequel trilogy about an android, and still call it Alien, it was Ridley Scott. He made 2 movies that very nearly made sure that no more Alien movie would ever be greenlit. I do not think people had enough of Alien, they have had enough of Sir Ridley's "visions" going in the wrong direction. I would be the last person to try to excuse Disney for all its crimes, but this one is not on them. It's on the people all over the globe who automatically believed that if Sir Ridley did it, it would be a great Alien movie.

Prometheus was one of the best movies of the franchise with deeper story than “spooky monster kills incompetent crew”. They should have stuck with their guns and kept with the original Prometheus script, and then gone further with Paradise Lost and the 3rd film.

Out of all the ideas the expanded alien univers came up with for the origin of the alien. Ridley and david pulled the DUMBEST fuckin idea out their asses.
This travesty of two movies cannot be forgotten soon enough
I like both movies, despite their flaws. It does the legacy-prequel thing better than any other blockbuster of the past 10 years. The mythology is interesting and David is a fascinating character. I wish we had a proper conclusion to that storyline.
The cut content from the prequels is what killed it. When you hear the full lore they could've included it changes the vibes of the movies entirely.
My biggest unpopular opinion is that I loved Prometheus.
I hadn't seen anything about it before watching the movie, so i only discovered it was part of the Alien franchise while watching the film (I also hadn't seen the original in a long time). Interestingly, everyone I've spoke yo that didn't know it was part of the franchise going in loves the movie. But people who knew it was a prequel hated it. 😅🤷♀️
I knew it was a prequel to the Alien franchise and I actually liked Prometheus and Covenant! obviously it was a different tone from the Alien movies from the past even as far as the technology and design, but It was refreshing to see another created thing (being David) being a huge threat to humanity.

he didnt hire him they just flew him over for a couple of days and showed them what their art department had come up with then flew him home..Giger doesnt work like that..Giger works alone in an empty hangar and only allows the Director in, thats how they did it in 1979.
No he didn't. He was the one who fought for him. I hate the prequel movies but let's not lie about Ridley to make him seem worse.

I think the exploration of the Engineers was genius. It will be a real shame if we don't have a conclusion to Alien Prometheus /Covenant
I just finished watching all of the Alien movies (minus AvP and AvP2) in preparation for seeing Alien Romulus and I'd say I enjoyed Prometheus and Covenant. They both try to be a cinematic epic, like David's beloved Lawrence of Arabia, but neither can quite hit that mark when they are also trying to be the horror/action movies that the original Alien movies were. Ultimately they are good movies that just don't fit in with the other Alien films. It would've been interesting to see what Ridley would've come up with if he wasn't beholden to the desires of the studios.
I would preffered to have seen the covenant sequel over what we are getting now. I at least hope that there are some links to Davids storyline in what we get in Romulus.

You can't simply kill a trilogy that hasn't been finished. The third film will be made and Disney won't stop it.
