"Why does Oliver sound different?" This Retrospective has been written, edited and voiced by my good friend, Tim Partridge. Tim also produced the Darkwing Duck retrospective and has taken part in a number of audio commentaries on my channel. Enjoy!
So that explains why you sound different.
Kidding.
Kid: mom can we have Oliver harper?
Mom: we have Oliver harper at home.
Oliver harper at home: 🤦🏽♂️
The show was Tales of the gold Monkey with jungle book as characters. Glass eyed dog is only thing missing.
This is content i can really go for!
Mr. Partridge I think it is fair to say you did a fine job sir and I personally thoroughly enjoyed your work on this video!!! Happy new year to you and Mr. Harper!!
The 90s had some of the best Disney shows. Duck tales, tailspin, Dark wing duck, chip and dale, Gargoyles, Aladdin, mighty ducks, Doug. I could go on. It was good growing up in the 90s.
Doug was Nickelodeon.
I didn't want to say it so i just liked your comment instead. @colonelmustard2652
The first half of the series was Nickelodeon. The second half was Abc which is owned by Disney.
@@AceMcSch00ly I must have stopped watching it before it went to ABC. Never too late to learn a fun fact about a show!
Ducks are here to play, DUUUUVKS ROCK
I'm 40...and I remember watching this show after coming home from elementary school.
That means you are exactly like all of the other fans
I love this world they created here, the weird mix of Art Deco, Caribbean, early aviation adventure movie is a perfect romanticized past which should have gotten somewhat of a resurgence when TaleSpin came out. The one I could think of was The Phantom with Billy Zane, later Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow or an Archer season but it never came close to TaleSpin, what a wonderful creation and my favorite of the Disney cartoon series.
I remember that I built a rather huge Sea Duck out of Lego, so that the scale to the Lego figures matched. And the only time I really wanted to go to McDonalds, which my parents weren't fond of at all (in hintsight thanks mom and dad), was when they featured TaleSpin toys. It's great and my definition of an adventure series.
I built a Lego Fukushima... Built a huge reactor 4, used a bunch of Ninjago, Hazmat mini fig and a huge tsunami built out of blue bricks. 90's cartoons were the BEST!!!
It was a pivotal part of my childhood and why I was fascinated by the era.
I think you could point to batman and other Paul Dini works at the time for a similar art-deco feel. Between that and all the justice league adjacent shows, there was something in the water with Art Deco and the early 90s.
@@workethicrecords5901 You're right, that seems to be a style of the time, also the last time we saw a bunch of old timey adventure movies, the last Indiana Jones movie came out in 89, Jungle Book had a movie, the Phantom, the Shadow and others came out at that time, I think the Rocketeer as well.
And these things were all on screen in my childhood, they indeed have that similarity and this might be the reason I like that now.
But it's kind of mix that Talespin had that probalby shouldn't work in most hands yet they make it blend together so effortless.
It's the Art Deco and the Noir influences mixed with the caribbean scenario the early Hollywood adventure movies that inspired the Indiana Jones movies and others (we most likely saw first), it's the pioneer aviation feeling, a lot of Howard Hughes related stuff, it's freedom, excitement and relaxation simultaniously,...
...for me this is perfect, although I would not want to see it recreated because of the "most hands" argument. :D
I used to love Tale Spin as a kid. I was too young to catch the more complicated themes highlighted here, but I certainly enjoyed the adventures, world building and characters. Thanks for this retrospective, it was good to go back!
Man I miss this show. I place it up there with Batman the Animated Series as among my favorite 90s TV series.
Rodger Ramjet, Count Duckula, Victor and Hugo. Gummy Bears, Dark(duck) Wing Duck, Duck Tales. They don't make em like they used to... Is it just me or do they treat kids like complete idiots now days. My favourites was Animaniacs and Tiny Toons before that.
Its on Disney+, if you want a nostalgia trip. You turned on the TV and there was a fun show to watch. Saturday morning from 6 - 12 was kids time. 'After these messages we'll be right back'.
@@PolarExpress-ql3nk Nah, been boycotting Disney for years now.
Love this show!
It was my childhood!
Damn. Seriously? More please!
Myne too...
This show is the reason why I knew what a sea plane was as a kid.
I also named my first pet Kit, after the character here.
I love how some of these Disney 90s series were able to be looked back with such fondness.
One of my fav Tailspin episodes is the Eat At Joes episode where Baloo had to write messages in the sky.
I think of that episode every time I have to think of when an “I” goes before an “e” in a word.
Same lol
Talespin gave me a lifelong love of seaplanes. I must have built five different replicas of the Sea Duck as a kid from popsicle sticks to styrofoam carvings.
Rebecca is my fav and both in beauty and brains....plus she's a good role model for women and though not perfect Molly is a cute child and acts like one. Also Rebecca has a lovely voice and i loved her episodes more as Khans ones too, shame they cut her song from the pilot, it was both beautiful ans heartwarming! Love the pairing of Rebecca and Baloo
One neat detail I heard about the B-Players pitch was that it established that Little John in Disney's Robin Hood was another role that Baloo had played.
Ricky Rat! 😂
That's a good joke
Will there be a retrospective on Gargoyles? That's my favorite Disney show.
This show was so effortlessly cool and charming! It made me obsessed with flying since age 5. It ran quite limited in Czech Republic compared to Duck Tales, RR or Gummi Bears unfortunately so my memories are few but very impactful. Thank you for this retrospective Tim! ❤
Don Carnage was my favorite character of the show. Aside from the two-part series premiere, the episode where they end up in Walla Walla Bing Bang was pretty cool.
"DON KARNAGE, Which is ME" is my favourite role from Jim Cummings.
What a lousy place for a wall lol 😆
Greetings and salivations, my number one fan. It is me, Don Karnage.
Same, he elevates the show every time he is on screen. If you remove him from the show I don't know if Id watch more than a few episodes.
He's cool and a great edition, but for me it's Shere Khan all day.
Nice to see you, expanding your realm of retrospectives to television and animation. I was not a fan of the show as a child, but it was very creative and memorable. Which is more than we get a lot of the time nowadays.
I’ll always adore the aesthetics and vibes of the 90’s
I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS SHOW WAS ON JUST ONE YEAR. it was great.
It was typical back then. The show was produced to run weekdays so 65 episodes was a common number they stuck with in making enough episodes to run three months before repeats.
Disney probably didn't sell enough TaleSpin merchandise, sadly. Notice how there were a butt-load of Ninja Turtles action figures, bed sheets, t-shirts, etc and how that show lasted for about 10 years or so.
It's always weird when a beloved character is brought back home with a different voice.
Sure does! BTW, Does Broly from DBZ sound different, now?
Such as Oliver Harper?
Hmm, I would argue that it doesn’t feel weird at all having Bob Bergen as Bugs and Daffy and the likes. He was the perfect replacement for Mel Blanc. You’d never know it was him.
@@RedDragonM1 Not in Japanese. The Funimation English-language dub's Broly, Vic Mignogna, got "MeTooed". I followed the case and the allegations (all made on social media rather than being reported to police) were nonsensical. The most serious accusation was an inappropriate relationship with a literally brain-damaged teenager, but it turned out she misremembered who did it. The guy who actually did this was the ex-fiancee of another woman who was accusing Vic of something else -- eating a jelly bean (literally, not a euphemism) with her name on it.
@@KasumiKenshirou That's what I was saying. Vic ate a jelly bean monica rial signed and said "I ate Monica." and she was fine with it...then, she made federal case out of it?? I know all about what happened, and how low some people can stoop. It seems to be over, but Vic's life was nearly destroyed. He now does smaller cons, and many cons blacklisted him, NTM his former co-stars will NOT go to any con he goes to.
I loved watching old reruns of Tailspin when I was a kid visiting the grandparents after school.
I think the Iron Vulture is also inspired by the airship from Robere the Conqueror. Also, noticed Khan here is a precursor to Lex from Superman TAS?
Oh, man, a Tale Spin retrospective! This is awesome. This show was my childhood along with Duck Tales. I hope you cover that too someday. Can't wait to listen to this tonight.
My dad is Jymn Magon. This video was a treat. Thank you for telling this story! Can’t wait to show him this! Keep it up
TaleSpin was one of my favorite things as a kid. Loved that show.
Now this is a killer late Xmas gift. I love tailspin
I used to LOVE this show.
Years later it was even more interesting to me because of the ties it had to Tales Of The Golden Monkey.
The first time I saw Tailspin, the first thought in my mind was "Somebody watched Tales of the Gold Monkey!"
29:58
Yup, Disney had a huge influence on me as well as many others. It's great to see a show get a deep analysis like this. Thank you!
An unforgettable part of my childhood. Talespin was one of my staples of after school viewing. I will always look back on this show with very fond memories.
Thank you fro bringing back all those wonderful Memories . Watching your review of this Wonderful Show from the Bygone Era of Disney Magic was superb. Made feel like a Kid again. THANK YOU Mr. Marper and Mr. Partridge.🙂
I remember finding Tailspin very hard to watch as a kid because it really put its characters through the ringer so much. It really was a cut above other TV shows and even a bit over-written for young children at that time.
To be a youth around the turn of 1990... I was right there, just turned 11 when the Disney Afternoon started, and it was a block of TV that I looked forward to every day after school! Not to sound all "Kids today..." but, kids today really can never know what that time period was like. Ah, such a cherished time.
And yeah, I'd say that of the Disney Afternoon shows, both Ducktails and TailSpin were equally my favorites. They both provided that pulp serial-type of adventure that scratched my Indiana Jones itch. You can tell, just as shown in this wonderfully made retrospective, that these series were handled with care. They weren't cheap cash-grabs or just a means to sell toys. Hell, even as my favorite shows each afternoon, I never even wanted a toy from these shows. I just enjoyed the stories!
Thank you for this, for giving me back a piece of my childhood that I nearly forgot!
I loved this show, I use to make the Seaduck out of legos. Such a great show!
Loved this show growing. Great job Tim 👍🏻
That episode Her Chance To Dream, Baloo consoling a heartbroken Rebecca has always resonated with me.
Amazing retrospective of one of the all time greats! 👏🏻
This retrospective is really good! Good work Tim! Now I wanna watch TaleSpin again!
This show happened when I was six. I remember it like a fever dream.
Loved this show when I was a child. I immediately subscribed to this channel. Thank you.
That b-players idea of unemployed toons running around on the back lot sounds an awful lot like Animaniacs...and would not only work, but could be a huge hit for Disney.
Sounds even more like Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
That or Bonkers that would come out a bit later.
Thank you for this!
I had no idea Talespin was so complex and deep. I didn't really like it as a child, something about the colours yellow and red just didn't do it for me, but as a grown up watching this retrospective.. I'm impressed, and feel respect.
I can totally get the not liking something because of color scheme
Would love to hear this "Oliver" more often. :) Good stuff.
Omg...thank you Oliver! Thank you for reviewing the art i thought was lost to the sands of time...
I had never heard of Tales of the Gold Monkey, and now I want to watch them all.
Very well put together video. Thank you for this trip down memory lane.
Oh man this brings back fond memories 😊
Outstanding work, Tim.
Gotta tip my hat to you Oliver you always seem to post content we love and didn’t know we wanted or needed : ) tale spin always tugs on the nostalgia heart strings for me
Good job mr. Partridge. When a retrospective is so indepth and entertaining, you forget you where never really that into Tailspin to begin with xD
This was quite the trip down memory lane. I think about it every now and then with a half hearted 'I should look that up when I get home.' I can just remember the show from when it was on in the early 90's, with 3 moments sticking out for some reason. Someone who knows the show better than I do comment and let me know if I'm remembering them even halfway right.
1. An episode centered around a mid-air floating refuelling station with Baloo offering hotdogs while customers waited to fill up
2. Kit 'defecting' because he was told the USSR themed nation lowered the flying age to 12, in reality to disguise the small size of their planes with small pilots
3. Baloo saving Kahn's life, and then milking the debt for a fridge full of sodas.
4. Baloo and Rebecca almost having a thing for each other.
Wow! Was not expecting you to do an episode on Talespin.Thank you!
Loved this, thank you for the work you put into these videos
I miss Tales Spin. I used to come home and watch that.
And you, mr Harper, deserves more views. Thank you for the nostalgia trip.
TaleSpin will always be my favorite Disney Afternoon series when I was a kid.
Besides of Tiny Toons also my favorite WB cartoon series.
I do miss my childhood but however as a grown up, my childhood stuff will grew much stronger
than ever. Thank you for making this vid and a Happy New Year 2024 to you, sir.
What an amazing documentary. Congratulations, you did this show justice. ❤
Wow, what an excellent, thorough retrospective! I always appreciate your thoroughness and attention to interesting details in your videos.
Great episode! Talespin was always one of my favorite shows as a kid growing up back then. You nailed it.
While I grew up with this show, it was a huge inspiration for me to become a pilot.
Great retrospective as always, Tim! What a fascinating look at one of the most underrated shows of "The Disney Afternoon" block. I appreciate how you not only went over the history of Disney's "The Jungle Book", but also the classic Rudyard Kipling novels and how they continued to have influences on "Talespin" as a whole and put the show in an historical context. I hope you continue your series with "DuckTales", "Adventures of the Gummi Bears", "Goof Troop", and especially "Gargoyles" to finish out this fantastic block of Disney animated TV shows from my childhood. Fantastic work and hope to see more in the future!
Oooh! Goof Troop!!! The last time I ever went to the drive in was a double feature of Casper and Goofy Movie. It's a bus depot now...
Amazing work Tim! This is great work!
42:00 I'm sure it says a lot given how optional pants tend to be for male characters in these cartoons. I remember asking someone who worked on this show about it and got told that animals that had short, thicker legs tend to be pants-less over tall, thinner ones as it worked effectively in their design.
I loved this show it was great. One of my favorites along with chip and Dale rescue rangers and dark wing duck. Watched them every Saturday morning while eating my Captain crunch berries 😊😊😊
Always thought it was duck Wing Duck
The way you speak about this show is the way I felt about duck tales. Tale spin was a close second as far as Disney tv cartoons go.
I really liked Tale Spin as a kid. It had flying, close to dogfighting as possible on a disney show, it had a classic, timeless style, and it was exotic yet grounded at the same time
Maybe with Nelsen Peltz' inevitable takeover of Disney, we could have a reboot of this with proper hand drawn animation, and maybe a romance between Baloo and Rebecca. Just my hope though.
Without diluting or castigating the patriarchal and familial bonds. One can hope. However in Disney's current state I'd rather they left it alone.
@@grinningtiki220 That's why I mentioned Peltz and the strong likelyhood of buying out Disney's board of directors and squeezing Iger out of the CEO position.
"Disney trashes its own work in 'Tale Spin'"
Even so, not nearly as badly as they would decades later, in the live action movie remakes.
Awesome video! Loved this show as a kid, and one of the few that holds up rewatching as an adult. Absolutely an underrated classic!
This was wonderful! Great video
They truly don't make em like they used to
I couldn't get enough of talespin when i was a kid. I even had the Lego talespin plane.
Must be the first time I've heard patriarchy and it not be demonised. Great review.
That was a great video. Brought back a lot of good memories. Great job. 👍
This was easily the best part of my afternoon routine as a kid
Talespin was always my favorite of the Disney Afternoon shows. It's mixture of pulp adventure and flying always captivated me. The Sea Duck was, and still is, one of my favorite fictional vehicles. I see it as Baloo's Millennium Falcon. Heck, I even knew the Sea Duck just before I had even heard about Star Wars. I was always bummed that there was never an accurate toy of the plane. Thankfully, however, fans have gone on to make pretty accurate 3d printed models of the plane. Let the Sea Duck fly on forever.
I loved this show as a kid.
I fondly remember this show from its original run on network TV during my childhood, especially because I wanted to be a pilot.
"The Old Man and the Sea Duck" is top-notch television
Back when dinsey mattered and was stil able to be good animation. God how I miss them days
What about Gravity Falls, Amphibia and the Owl House? Not to mention the recent Ducktales reboot. Disney still drops bangers every once and awhile
Spin it! Let's begin it!
This brings back memories. I always wished I'd been able to sit in on the pitch meeting for this show.
"Okay so Baloo from the jungle book...but he's a 1940s bush pilot."
Imagine if they did something like this again. The Lion King characters but in a space opera??
@@Takeshi357if it's by the same writing and creative team then sign me up!
I grew up watching this show and I really love it!
The afternoon block was my childhood, and at the pinnacle was tailspin. Don karnage was just amazing.
This video is insane, very well done.
I loved this show so much as a kid.
I appreciate the book-accurate pronunciation of Mowgli.
Wow thank you for this great Video! I loved every second of it ❤❤❤ Talespin, which is called Captain Baloo and his Crew in germany, was absolutely awesome! Disney Afternoon is something very special.
Wow, great video! I personally would love to see more retrospectives from Tim.
Wow you really hit a deep trough of memories talking about coming home to an empty house i never realized that cartoons filled a gap not just for me but an entire generation
Did I get a visit from Santa Karnage? This is the best Christmas present a pirate could ask for.
This was absolutely awesome. Thank you for such a thorough and thoughtful tribute to a show that made an impact on so many… and your conclusion about how it can be interpreted as adults was thought provoking.
What a wonderful and comprehensive look at Talespin. It wasn't until much later realized the art style they were going for, and saw Where Angels Have Wings. But didn't know about the show Tales of the Golden Monkey. Well done!
And to think they eventually did all those awful straight to video sequels when THIS is how you use old characters for new things; treat them like actors and put them in new scenarios.
And there as some legal issue with the estate of Louis Prima (who originally voiced King Louie) that caused King Louie to be absent from all post TaleSpin Jungle Book sequels, replaced by his similar but legally distinct brother or something.
@@KasumiKenshirou There was only 1 Jungle Book Sequel, and I think the whole mess was bought up by Louis Prima's Wife Gia Prima, who has died by now..
This video is a masterpiece! I absolutely adore Talespin and this has just reinforced and expanded my love for this show. I learned so much, and got emotional at times watching this. Thank you.
The best retrospective of a show that doesn't get enough retrospectives. My personal appreciation of the show has only grown over the years, and it's a contender for my favorite cartoon (alongside Gargoyles).
20:00 The music is surprisingly one of the most impressive aspects of the show. It really sounds like it belongs in a feature film, which really helps sell the pilot movie (which additionally had a great plot and animation). It's a shame Disney never released it in its original form, or even a remaster.
Latchkey kid from this age. These characters raised me as much as some real people. I will never forget what these shows meant to me.
Loved Molly! She was great as Danger Woman... She was a little girl that was not easily fooled..... Loved what she did to Covingron...
Talespin was great! Simple enough for kids to follow, but nuanced enough for adults to readily pick up the analogues.
Almost everything I've ever felt about this TV show summed up in this retrospective review. Really glad too hear it said, "deeply melancholic," when it came to certain episodes/scenes. I think TaleSpin had more real life, emotional themes than most of its kind. Fantastically well done, thoroughly enjoyed this.
Awesome as always,💙👋🎉
Tailspin has always been my second favorite show out of the Disney Afternoon block (Gargoyles beating it out for me). It is just the right mix of serious and silly that I tend to like. At least it gets the honor of being one of the only one of these to get the whole show out on DVD as most of the others had been cut off by about a dozen episodes. I think the only others where Goof Troop, though that one just put out both volumes with half all at once rather then be a little short after the two and most recently Rescue Rangers got the whole thing on Blue Ray, likely to cross promote with the movie.
Oh man TaleSpin is a rad 90's childhood show I haven't watched that in a long time.
I love it in India it got translated into the Hindi language I think every Saturday morning or Sunday morning of course all the names are in Hindi that are burnt into my mind
