  • 30 years ago today the X-Files made it's television debut. So I figured what better way to celebrate than by taking a look at just what makes this series so special.

I'm in the UK, and when I was a kid, (I think in the mid 90s) I sent a letter to the X-Files studio, I forget what it was about. But weeks later they sent me a signed photograph from both Gillian and David . It was a total surprise. And I still have it. 😀

    The X-Files summed up:
    Mulder: "Scully..."
    Scully: "No Mulder."
    Mulder: "Scully...c'mon."
    Scully: "Mulder...no."
    Mulder (insistant): "Scully..."

Recently I re-watched this series in HD after watching it from TV as a kid. I was blown away how well written and filmed it was, back then I of course wasn't able to analyze it in such manner, I just loved the series, but now as an adult it's obvious the show is a masterpiece.

The X-Files is a classic. That no romantic interest was agreed on early, and held to for the most part, was steps too far to suspend disbelief. I loved the stand-alone episodes most all as the famed "mythology" went off the rails. (In an interview, both leads confess to losing track of the story themselves.) Showrunners doomed the legacy of the X-Files, or we'd be watching its reruns now.

I've worked in the movie industry for 20 years now, and you'd be surprised how many times executives bring ideas that everyone on the team knows will get a bad reception from the audience. However, no one ever says anything because you just don't want to get involved in drama and simply want to do your job and go home.

By saying nothing, these people will stay in power, and crap will be produced in perpetuity. I'm not surprised at all, it happens in all aspects of life.
I'm not saying I've never gone along to get along, but quite often I call out crap when I see it. There are consequences anyway, whichever approach you choose. And, you'd be surprised, how often it pays out sooner or later - people appreciate telling them they're on the wrong road, it saves them time and money, and helps them getting to the correct destination they had in mind. Those who don't, are just hopeless, and better be avoided, no matter what ;)@@markospas

Thx, was nice to revisit. I was a fan but really liked the stand alone shows the best. In my opinion, the two reboots seasons were poorly written and Mulder and Scully were so different and depressing. I had really looked forward to it but was disappointed. The tone was way off. I think fans wanted nostalgia not a reinvention. It’s really ashamed the reboot failed, I miss the show, nobody did a monster or mystery better. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the alien stuff so I guess I was an outlier.

This just came up for me. Really great retrospective. Many of the content creators i follow have been on a massive nostalgia binge lately and I have been loving it. X-files wasn't just a show, it was a religion for me. It was one of those shows where you went to school and asked excitedly ' Did you watch X-files?' Although not what you've been talking about, new TV and the way we watch it, or rather consume it, is so different. Shows were better, a Season was 4-5 months long in terms of viewing, the anticipation and excitement for next week's episode was half the fun. I rewatched it on streaming a few years ago, i was reminded of all the things i either missed or that didn't stick in my mind. I'm glad that older shows like this are available, but I'm even more glad that I watched it how I did the first time. This is a great retrospective! You did an excellent job recapping the series and each season. Looking back on the later seasons, I really just don't understand Chris Carter's thought process. He gets a chance to make another movie, and he chooses to go with a lame monster of the week storyline instead of the mythology. Then they bring the show back only for him to retcon the entire mythology plot even though it contradicts things that happened in previous seasons. And there's no way CSM survived that missile blast. My brain can not accept that.

    • @hs2874
      @hs2874 11 месяцев назад +14

Re: Carter’s thought process. I’ve been thinking about what went wrong in the end. Some of the story choices were really questionable, such as making a mother give her baby up for adoption for his safety (??). I don’t know if it was burnout/fatigue (24 full episodes a year is a LOT), bad judgment, incompetence, or maybe my perspective as a fan being influenced by flaming internet debates. Most dedicated fandoms do tend to get toxic. The objective reality though is that none of the other shows CC made succeeded. We've seen the outtakes from the pilot in which Scully literally howls to the moon - CC wrote that. It’s entirely possible that CC just hit the jackpot with cast and crew in the very beginning, and the special sauce really was the chemistry between Mulder and Scully above all. Maybe what makes great art is alchemy, inexplicable magic. I still can’t bring myself to finish seasons 8 and 9, or else it’d destroy some of my best teenage era memories. I was there in the streets of Vancouver when they filmed season 10, it was super cool to watch from up close, but the final result couldn’t live up to my expectations.

After the show ended the first time, I went on a website dedicated to Mulder torture fanfic, and ended up writing several stories over the years. This is where I met David himself online, who was interested in reading the fans fiction! Over time I have met him at various events, in New York, and UK where I live. I came to realise he actually loves my writing, and singing, which was a lovely discovery last Nov (when he was here performing with his band.) He really is such a sweet and gentle guy, and always makes you feel so comfortable around him. It's a privilege to know him! As for X Files, I really feel it is over. This reboot will not work IMO, as Mulder & Scully were such iconic and important characters. Also, the fact Chris Carter the creator (who I've also met) is not even involved puts me right off! I'm just glad I have the original show & movies on DVD & Blu ray! I'm even in a clip of the BTS on season 10, as I was in Vancouver when David was filming. I had gone over to scatter my Mum's ashes in her fave spot on Grouse Mountain in 2015. I had NO idea they were filming the crowd watching them in action! LOL!

It too lasted only a while as some left the groups.
With the personal computers taking off back then it felt like you were a part of it . we often thought that a lot of our chats were being followed by the creators of the show since some of the plots were very close to our speculations.@@JBSpookyReview

The first episode I stumbled appon, was about some strange worms in an arctic station or somewhere alike. I was captivated by an awesome film, and blown away when I found out this "only" was an episode from a series.
Just from the production value alone, they were setting standards, then the storytelling, the characters, everything. This was an amazing show from beginning to end. Not perfect, but totally in it's own league.
Best thing about the show was, that the character of scully empowered a whole generation of young women to go into STEM. One other show that also had a major impact of getting people into STEM was Star Trek. When you have something like this happening, you have a cultural phemonenon, you have literally a life changing effect on large numbers of people. Good retrospective. I've always been a sci-fi fan, but as a teenager growing up in the 90s, I couldn't watch the show because I found the opening theme song too eerie. I finally found the entire run on Netflix as an adult and watched it, plus the two feature films (and the eventual revival, when it aired). Another pop culture influence: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had an episode where several crew members were inadvertently sent back in time by a Klingon operative using a Bajoran orb. He tried to kill Captain Kirk in the past (basically through the events of "The Trouble With Tribbles" -- it was a Star Trek anniversary episode). There were two special agents from Starfleet who investigate events like this to ensure the timeline wasn't changed sent to interview Captain Sisko, and these two agents were named Dulmer and Lucsley -- anagrams of Mulder and Scully.

I was born 42 days after the first episode aired in the US and I was just over one when we got the show as well. Through my childhood my mom and I would watch this show, and as I would later learn, it was always on VCR, since my mom would watch every episode when it aired to see if they would be too scary. Episodes like 'Humbug', 'Clyde Bruckman's final repose" and 'Bad blood' are etched deep in my mind from those days. I have since watched the whole series few times over, like before the 2016 renewal and once again I'm going through it all.
This whole series is the perfect combination of dark themes lightened up by the near constant optimism and occational full on comedy, and the nineties nostalgia just brings it to a whole new level. I can't thank the makers of this series enough.

I'm surprised to be reminded that peak X-Files lasted only 5 seasons and most of the episodes I remember came from that period, except the Cops parody episode.
The move to L.A. is a big mistake in terms of the mood of the show. The murky shadowy Vancouver lighting makes the episodes feel like TV fiction while the stark clear L.A. lighting makes it like "based on actual events". Script writers can't fudge around with the story arc anymore, anything shown in the episodes feels like it's set in stone now while monster of the week went the opposite direction, feeling more inconsequential. There's one with the Garbage song "Happy When It Rains" which sticks out in my mind where our dynamic duo is barely in it

Damn much respect to all the time put into this. I wish I had this a few years back when I got back into x files and couldn't wrap my booze-addled mind around -any- Mk mythology episode

Brought back so many good TV memories. Crazy to remember an episode from 30 years ago, that's the thing I miss most from old school TV.

I'm in the minority, but I don't think anything that comes out today is all that memorable when compared to older shows.

There was a series in the late 70's ['78-'79] that was called "Project: U.F.O." [also called "Project Blue Book] after the actual Air Force investigations] created for NBC by Television Legend Jack Webb.
The 26 episode series followed an Air Force investigative team as they looked into U.F.O. sightings and encounters.
The team invariably found proof of each sighting being either a misinterpretation of natural phenomenon, OR a deliberate hoax, However most of the episodes ended with a post story teaser that demonstrated the Air Force's conclusions could be wrong.
As it's format most closely fit that of The X-Files I thought it MUST have been the direct inspiration.

I would not be surprised if that show didn't have at least some inspiration for the x-files.

@@JBSpookyReview THE most interesting part about Project U.F.O. is, like ALL other Jack Webb T.V. series, the stories were ALL taken from actual case files.
Remember the quote; "The story you about to see is true, The names were changed to protect the innocent"?
      That's Jack Webb.
