Dealership quoted me $480 to do this repair. I opted to buy the $65 ignition cylinder at the local parts place and watched your video. Had the whole repair done in under 45 minutes. You saved this guy a nice chunk of change! Many thanks!
Great video. Helped us figure out how to resolve the ignition problem we were having on 2006 Ram 1500. Key would not turn. We sprayed WD-40 in the keyhole and left it sit overnight. The next morning I was able to insert the key pretty hard into the ignition and it turned. We were able to get it home and work on the ignition. Removed the cylinder, drew the diagram as we removed the tumblers, cleaned everything out real good with brake cleaner and compressed air, re-assembled, and it worked like a charm. Thank you for the detailed tutorial.
Where did you get the kit? I had a squarely varmint steal my keys couple weeks ago and my only other key fob won't work at all even with new battery ,also had to slam it into key hole hard after 40 minutes of monkeying with it. All these pricks want to steal my truck and rims so I won't ever leave it so I'm ordering something tonight. I just now pulled into my yard . Thank god because I had a band of homeless tweekers on bicycles watching me trying to get in and circling me like Voltaire's so much that as soon as I was able to get in the truck I racked one in my pistol grip pump and got the hell out of there.even my dog was vibing them
Hello I was in need of changing my ignition out. After watching this video I changed it out in 25 mins. I didn't rekey it but was able to change it for a fast fix. I am not mechanically inclined so anybody can do it. Thanks for the expert advice on the video. Very clear and to the point instructions. Again thxs.
Great video! Having a locksmith coming to fix mine tomorrow. I have 2004 Dodge Ram wth 60000 Km / 40000 miles and just like that the tumbler is locked. Pain in the a$$ but for $125 the guy is going to rebuild as u did in your video.
Great video. Very detailed and helpful. Also, I the key is stuck in the OFF position (which is why my truck had to be towed home last night by AAA), the rubber mallet technique works as a short term fix, and also as a way to get the cylinder out.
John Ingram thank you for watching my video, rubber mallet w/ work for a short time but it’s always best to to replace the lock cylinder before it get worse. Good luck when repairing your truck.
Thank you for the very informative video, the best one I could find. I used a Strattec kit #704650 for my 2004 Ram. It came with everything needed to do the job.
Thank you very much for the video it heloed alot, my key broke inside the ignition switch and this video helped me fix the problem (2007 dodge ram sport)
I just sprayed the inside of key hole with wd40 and a needle sprayer worked like a charm. Try this before having to take it apart or beating with your shoe to use the key haha
its funny my 05 has a grey key i dont know if it actually is chipped or someone bought it and had it cut for it. how to tell if you need one anything inside the column that would suggest it?
I know this video was done a long while back but hopefully you still follow responses... My issue is that I lost my last key so I cannot remove the ignition cylinder. I have everthing to the point of turning the key to AC and then pushing the spring loaded button in to remove the cylinder. I did go to the dealership and had another key made from the VIN numbers but it will not turn at all. It's not a chip key so no programming... it just won't turn at all. The dealership said it's not unusal for a new key to not work on an old truck due to wear in the tumblers. So, I cannot turn the switch forward so that the spring loaded button will be in position to push in and release. I notice someone mentioned the rubber mallet method if your key will not turn... Can you tell me what that method is? Or any other things I can try? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Really helpful to to me replacing the tumbler on my 03 ram 3500. Especially telling which tools you'll need. I got the Dorman tumbler (924-783) off Amazon that programs your old key to the truck. Was only 58$. Thanks for making this video
this video is a great tutorial, great job. I got my cylinder out but the key will not turn to the acc position and even pushing down both of the little pins it will not turn to the left at all so will not come out. any idea how to pull it apart to re key it ?
Have 2008 Dodge ram 1500 . How do you know if you have a Anti-Theft key. I have trouble turning my truck on. When I leave the key on in 3 seconds or minutes will turn on by itself
My son's key won't turn AT ALL - how can we get the cylinder out if it won't turn? The steering wheel is loose, too. Any help is appreciated. Key is in good condition
On my 06 RAM 2500, I have replaced the ignition switch and the cylinder using your video to determine the slug numbers on the old cylinder and install the new matching slugs in the new cylinder. All went without installation problems but I still have the issue where I can remove the key at improper locations causing the dinging to continue with the key out. I even had a spare anti theft key and started using it thinking that maybe the original key was worn out but continued to have the same issue where the key can be removed at other than the proper location. What else is there to replace? Your video was great!
I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 that dings when the door is open with the key in and with the key out. Do you know why it would be doing that even with the key removed from the ignition and the door open?
Video is very good information. However, my key will not turn at all and I noticed you said you have to turn the key to the 'on' position to be able to get the Ignition Lock Cylinder out after you use the little pin to allow the lock to come out. How do you get it out when the key will not even turn on at all? Thank you.
Got mine rebuilt. All he did was remove the tumblers and filed them (clean) and reinstall. He recommended no grease because he says he’s returned to customers who have had them replaced from another installer and the tumblers with the grease were gummed up with dirt causing them to fail. It literally took him 20 minutes to clean up and reinstall. I had the steering column shroud already off for him to start.
Tried this - but when I took the tumblers out - they were not "1,2,3...." - They were "C04... C02...." and I couldn't read the rest as they were stained and worn. So I can live with one key for ignition and one key for the door.
That’s the big question, if you can’t turn it it’s going to me very difficult to fix. Just keep playing w/ the key and wiggle it just right and hopefully it will turn. If you can’t get the keys to turn the next easiest thing is you probably will have to drill it out BUT don’t damage the ignition housing. Good luck and let me know.
My man! I appreciate you for sharing this knowledge. I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 and the key won't turn the cylinder at all. Is there just a tumbler kit or do I need the entire housing and cylinder kit?
Hey man got an issue with the light for the milage and the R N D 1 2 for my wife's 04 Dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi The lights don't go off when not driving and something kills the battery over night! Have any advice on what I can do and when key is it when I open the driver door dings sound
Muchas gracias por el video me Ahorraste mucho dinero , una pregunta se puede poner un remoto para entrar sin usar la llave en especial a este modelo de camionetas ? Muchas grasias
Hey there. Is there anyway for you to verify the part number for the kit you used. The Dorman part number 924-709 doesn't come with extra tumblers from what I'm finding. I have called Oriellys and Autozone and had them open the box and they say its just the complete tumbler no extras. So if you could verify that. That would be awesome. Thanks Josh
Great Help Thank you, Do you have any idea if I need to replace the Tumbler as you did here, or is my Switch that is bad. The problem that I'm having is I can remove the Key when it is steal on, it has left me with a dead batterie a couple times. Jeff (1998 Dodge 3500}
So I need some help I got the kit and I must’ve put the tumblers like in the wrong spot and I put the key in the ignition and now I can turn the key at all and it’s stuck inside the outer piece. How can I turn tumbler without the right key
Great video where did you get the little pieces to rekey the lock? does that come with a standard lock cylinder from the auto parts? store or is that separate
Very well done video... I've watched a lot of repair videos and you film, narrate and edit very well...1 question for you... I'm looking for the tumbler that comes without the key and allows you to set it with your current existing key...I saw it on line but I can't find it now...only tumblers with keys...any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks
Dorman part# 924-793 hopefully that part helps you. You can replace the tumbler and use your existing key. That’s a new product that was put out I’ve never used it but hopefully that might work for you. Good luck on the repair.
That's exactly the one I was looking for...I came across it by accident at first but didn't buy it right then...when I went back to buy it I couldn't find it for some reason...thanks so much for your effort on this and keep up the great videos...cheers and all the best, dave
No easy way, the easiest way is to drill out the lock cylinder and keep stepping it up in drill bit size. Don’t damage the the ignition housing, it will take some time but you can drill it out just enough to reach the lock pin to remove the cylinder. Good luck.
Basically you have 2 options, either drill out the tumbler but be careful not to damage the ignition housing. Or just call a locksmith and pay them. Not sure about the dodge vehicles but you can sometimes call the local dealership and give them the vin, they can sometimes cut the key for you off of the vin BUT you have to prove your the owner of the vehicle. Hope that helps.
Sorry for the late question. Will this ignition lock fix work for a keyless entry integrated key-fob? I see that the key you're using to demonstrate is a manual entry key, where mine is a key with the unlock/lock/panic button. Does the replacement ignition lock work for both types of keys? Thanks for the video!
HeidelbergJaeger thank you for your comment and watching my video. Unfortunately the electronic keys and the blade keys are two completely different set up’s. The electronic keys have internal electric switch and the blades have tumblers. Hope this helps thank you
So my 2006 ram 1500 thinks the keys in it all the time. even when it's out. I tried changing the starter switch it didn't help ,,and I tried changing the lock cylinder it didn't help .what could it possibly be?
You have to try to tap the key w/ a hammer while turning the key. Don’t turn to hard. Worse case Scenario you would have to drill out the Tumblr from the inside out be real careful when you do that you don’t want to damage the housing. Hope that helps you out.
Oh man. That’s the million dollar question. Normally you have to drill out the tumbler BUT be careful not to drill into the housing. DONT damage the housing. Good luck. Most of the time, take your time and try to get the ignition to turn over. Let me know.
Mine only had 3 pin on one side and 4 on the other. Is this normal ? I rekeyed it according to the video and it works fine just wondering if I had a pin missing that should be there.
Anthony Clem some ignition tumblers won’t have all the keys. That’s the way dodge can make so many different key combinations. I’m happy to hear that you were able to fix your ignition by following the video. Please share and subscribe, thank you.
@@fixersautomotive4514 Well turns out with my vehicle if u dnt use the correct specific one. You will have to have codes reset. I was able to replace tumber just fine. But the new keys or valet keys dont have the chip like the original fob keys. But still very helpful video i think.
Elliott u can’t move the tumbler w/ out a key and w/ out turning the lock cylinder over to line up the little release tab. You normally have to break the tumbler out or step drill it out in order to remove the lock cylinder. BUT be carful and not to damage the cylinder housing in the steering column. Hope this helps, good luck.
I followed process and it worked to fix key turn issue. But now my 06 dakota thinks the key is always in the ignition and it chimes repeatedly when i turn off engine and remove key (as if headlights were on) and does not allow me to lock the door using the lock button when door is open. Any idea why?
Nevermind. I figured it out. I will post as a reply rather than edit my original comment in case someone runs into same issue. Basically, the internal cylinder with tumblers has a plastic black rod on the tip of the end that is inserted. That tiny rod was flush with the edge of the tip. It's actually supposed to dip about 1/4 inch into the cylinder's tip. To do this you have to carefully pull it out with a pin and reinsert it so that it is aligned with a pin hole inside the cylinder and slips into that hole. I believe it has something to do with making proper contact/path with the ignition switch in order to ground (or unground) the cylinder when the key is inserted/removed. This ensures you don't get locked out when key is ignition.
there should have been a little brass piece that if not put back in place it will not make contact and makes the truck think the key is still installed. you will have to remove the lock cylinder again it find that.
@@fixersautomotive4514 if you are referring to the brass piece on the side of the internal cylinder, that piece is in place and never fell out. As I posted in my own reply.... The issue is now fixed. There was a tiny black plastic rod inside the end of the internal tumbler cylinder that needed to slip into the cylinder end a bit further so that it engaged with the ignition switch assembly when the lock cylinder is reinserted.
@@mferro13 Thanks for your information. Mine is doing the same thing. It thinks the key is still inserted, when it is not. With the key out beeping key reminder beeps and doors will not lock. Will have to pull the new cylinder back out and check it. On the old cylinder the rod is pushed in to far, so the radio and key reminding was not working.
Jordan, you have to change out the ignition switch on the left side of the steering wheel for that, not the key cylinder. It’s black and plugs into the large wire bundle on the left side. You can pick them up at any auto parts place
Alec Binyon yes but your key will be hard to turn because the little keys are worn out. Your can just google and buy the keys you need. Just make sure not to mix up the numbers of the keys. Hope that helps.
Jose Pineda yes. For all metal keys. Just follow the steps and you should be good. Will not work on electronic keys that don’t have a blade key. Please share and subscribe. More videos coming soon.

The grey key is the chipped key.

No tienes information para contactarte mi amigo tenia preguntas en la dodge troca de el.
What screws did you remove?
Are you talking about the column cover screws.
@@fixersautomotive4514 yes but I found them thank you
Where did you buy the extra new tumblers ?
Roscoe Tippetts they came in the kit w/ the part.
Hope this helps thank you
Where can I can get the springs
You can’t buy just the springs, you will have to buy the entire kit to get new tumblr springs.
So my 2006 ram 1500 thinks the keys in it all the time. even when it's out. I tried changing the starter switch it didn't help ,,and I tried changing the lock cylinder it didn't help .what could it possibly be?
Did you get it figured out?
How do you get it out if the tumbler won't turn
You have to try to tap the key w/ a hammer while turning the key. Don’t turn to hard. Worse case Scenario you would have to drill out the Tumblr from the inside out be real careful when you do that you don’t want to damage the housing. Hope that helps you out.
Ty😊
How do you get the cylinder out if you can’t turn the key??
D Miller you can’t unless you break the ignition lock cylinder. Be carful not to damage the housing. Drill it out is the best way.
hey man what if im not able to turn the igniton cylinder to get it out
Oh man. That’s the million dollar question. Normally you have to drill out the tumbler BUT be careful not to drill into the housing. DONT damage the housing. Good luck.
Most of the time, take your time and try to get the ignition to turn over. Let me know.
@@fixersautomotive4514 thanks for the help man, will try to drill it out cause I lost my original keys
Where did you get the new tumbler key s?
Life with Marlene it was a Dorman part. Your local part store should be able to order this kit. Part number 924-709. Good luck 🍀
What about if u cant get the ignition to the on position?
That’s the hard part and you don’t want to break the ignition cylinder. Most of the time you have to drill it out to get the tumbler out.
@@fixersautomotive4514 thank you sir
@@fixersautomotive4514 Well turns out with my vehicle if u dnt use the correct specific one. You will have to have codes reset. I was able to replace tumber just fine. But the new keys or valet keys dont have the chip like the original fob keys. But still very helpful video i think.
Thanks now i know what too do for my dodge ram
Cant move the key at all can u still take cylinder out with the key?
Great job!
I'm gonna have to give this a go. I'm having a problem with th a.c. not coming on unless I turn the key almost all the way off after starting up.
Jordan, you have to change out the ignition switch on the left side of the steering wheel for that, not the key cylinder. It’s black and plugs into the large wire bundle on the left side. You can pick them up at any auto parts place
Hey man could I take the tumblers from the old one and put them into the new one?
Alec Binyon yes but your key will be hard to turn because the little keys are worn out. Your can just google and buy the keys you need. Just make sure not to mix up the numbers of the keys. Hope that helps.
Thanks great help.
This will work for keyless entry and the regular key ,mine has both
Jose Pineda yes. For all metal keys. Just follow the steps and you should be good. Will not work on electronic keys that don’t have a blade key. Please share and subscribe. More videos coming soon.
Thank you,for a very helpful video and advice!
Tengo un problema algunas de las veces la llave de mi camioneta la enciende pero no me ensiende el interior ni las ventanas las puedo bajar no el aire ensiende ! Que sera eso?
Where do I get a kit.. Same truck with the same issue
Born 2 Fish at your local auto parts show. It’s a Dorman Kit. I think about $45-50 for the kit.
On Amazon about $30.00 with shipping. Strattec #704650.
