    I was working in 3Ds max for past 4 years. I'm currently in middle of shifting from max to maya. This channel has helped a lot with it.
    Would you be making videos on unwrapping textures? It looks a bit complicated than max.
    Thanks for the video.

    Sir i have several questions to your steps... 1. on 28:34 why after you deleted the detached object, then it's still there showing on 28:47? why do you have 2 bars? (the deleted object)
    2. Did you use mirror or duplicate? you didn't explain but on 30:47 you have 2 objects again!! (when did you mirror or duplicate?) please help! thanks

    I just got a question , why we select in the begining 6 faces and not 12? just to make later 12 and after that to divide special. The cylinder have 60 faces divided by 5 spokes are 12 , each symetry line is in the middle of the spoke.

    At 24:40 you beveled that edge. What keys did you press to increase the number of edges?

    • @jlmussi
      @jlmussi  5 лет назад +1

      Use the "Bevel" command from the "Modeling Toolkit". You can change the divisions on the fly by holding SHIFT and scrubbing left to right.

    20:49 what do you mean by D, Ctrl, then W?
    I'm doing that and it's not doing nearly the same thing. The edit pivot widget comes up, but Ctrl doesn't do anything, and W just returns it to the regular Translate tool. Holding Ctrl+W doesn't do anything, either. What am I doing wrong??
    EDIT: He doesn't mention that you have to click on the edge you want the pivot to match.
    So it's D, Ctrl+Click on the edge you want the pivot to orient to, then W to return to the Translate tool.

    Hi JL! Hope you can help? I’m having issues with “duplicate special” using the 72deg rotation. It worked fine yesterday but the function does nothing now. I have frozen transformation, deleted history and I patented the object. I edit the pivot and place at the centre point then reset the tool prefs, choose 72 in the correct axis and when I hit duplicate the tool closes but nothing happens. I’m going but trying to figure out what’s causing this. Have you seen this before or have any idea what may be causing the function to fail? Thanks 👍

    great video! how you would you use this approach on an 8 spoke rim?

    • @jlmussi
      @jlmussi  4 года назад +1

      Same principle. Use an initial cylinder that is evenly divisible by 8. Take 360 and divide by 8, so would rotate by 45 degrees.

    When I duplicate special it seems to stack all the duplicates over the same space where the first duplicate should go. I've looked at your settings and with the exception of some slightly different numbers for my project everything is the same.

    • @jlmussi
      @jlmussi  5 лет назад +1

      If you are trying to create a radial symmetry setup, make sure your pivot is in that center, also make sure you are rotating on the correct axis, maybe you built your shape from the side instead of the front, so you should use rotation values in X instead of Z. Just a guess here.

    • @terryrhuebottom
      @terryrhuebottom 5 лет назад

      @@jlmussi Well that is true. I have been trying to do it on the Y-axis. Which is what I needed. I also have the pivot centered like you mentioned. It's weird. Say I want the rotation on the Y-axis at 30 degrees and need a total of twelve including the original one. The eleven duplicates that are linked to the original all are created on top of each other 30 degrees off of the original. It's not incrementally increasing the rotation like it does in yours. I was thinking that there may be some settings somewhere else that I might not have done correctly. But I'll keep looking. If I take things a little longer I can duplicate special and create one additional at 30 the next one from 60 and on till I get what I need. But I hope to figure this out.

      @@jlmussi Also thanks for the fast reply.

      So I've been revisiting this issue and accidentally figured it out. For some reason, the scale for the z-axis on the tool was at -1 instead of 1. When I changed this to 1 everything works just fine. I probably ended up accidentally keying it at some point. Glad to figure it out. Beats doing it one at a time.

    4:14 how did u isolate it? after Ctrl+Shift+i? You're not hiding or isolating, the faces becomes a new object?

    This is an area maya really falls down on its face, the whole instancing thing is really unstable and needs improvement big time. oh well, maybe in another 10 years we will get some more modeling enhancements.
