I agree 100%. There isn't enough training and focus on ground defense/tactics in most law enforcement academies.

Ground fighting and wrestling is probably your best tool right behind the pen in law enforcement. Highly recommend!

any street fight that I've ever been in, I've utilized grappling with success... I'm sure when carrying a weapon it gets trickier but awesome video!

Some of those standing joint lock techniques can be found in Hapkido or other traditional martial arts before BJJ even existed.

This comes from the traditional japanese Jiujitsu...

I guess a black belt in BJJ is probably the best person to teach weapon retention. Obviously “real life” experience would add to the skill but a black belt in BJJ definitely aids in closing and creating space and controlling the situation. Very cool.

Good point.I think BJJ can help safe arrest for officer and that s good for suspect as well.

One thing I learned from a Tim Kennedy video. Don’t think someone won’t fucking bite you. Seems silly. But when shit is for real. The person who’s getting worked tends to start getting desperate. Especially when it’s more than a “bar fight”

Tim is a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Rener's uncle. He knows just as well as Rener or Ryron about the risk of biting.

Which 5.11 pants are they wearing? I bought Stryke before and I can move good in them, but the urban cargo ones suck and the crotch it too long and it restricts hip and leg movements.

So a bjj black belt who is not a cop or military (with experience in hostile environments) is a credible source for weapon retention? I’m not being sarcastic or insinuations this is not true I’m genuinely asking. I see no reason why they couldn’t teach you how to keep your gun and keep them off of it. But I may be wrong so yea. I think a bjj black belt with no military or law enforcement experience teaching people how to use bjj to retain their weapon is awesome. Seems to work well.

a bjj black belt in general won't understand weapons retention, especially if the focus is competition. Being in the military or law enforcement does not automatically endow you with skill. Knowledge and practice does. Although bjj training is more likely in the military, I don't think that it's taught at every branch. Markmanship seems to be priority. Even less can be said for law enforcement. More than a few officers are involved in violent confrontations without fight training, and excessive force is used on the suspect or the cop is assaulted. Worse case scenario - someone dies. So to answer your question : The person who can understand the situation and solve the problem is the one who has credibility.
P.S. - These technique have already been used by trained law enforcement officers and have been proven to work.

You may now know but the course Gracie Combatives was developed under request by the American government to train soldiers basic but effective ground fighting in the small amount of time as possible. The GST came with the same focus but taking as consideration the nuances of policing in USA, that being said, many Jiu-Jitsu masters were hired by police departments in the USA to train them. The course was created based on their needs taking into consideration case studies.

They're not mere "bjj" black belts. They are the oldest grandsons of Helio Gracie and their father created the UFC. They are among the most knowledgeable grapplers in the world who have been working with the US Government to improve military combatives.

Being bitten is a risk. But it's better than being shot with your own weapon.
