The Sync button is pretty controversial, and you may have your own opinion on it. I myself have nothing agains’t it, but I do believe everyone should learn how to beat match manually.
Anyway. No matter what you think of the Sync button, there is no denying the fact, that it’s pretty useful and especially useful if you want to transition huge BPM differences.
So in this video I’m gonna teach you how to smoothly transition from low to high BPM’s and high to low bpms - like 90 to 130, and vice versa.

    ►SCRIPT
This transition technique works by setting the currently playing song as MASTER, and activating SYNC on the song you want to transition to.
Once you reach your transition point, which will be the outro of a song. You will then mix in the intro of the next song. But here’s the kicker. Once the songs are playing together you will then use the tempo fader of the master deck (which is set to the WIDE) to bring the BPM of both songs either higher or lower - depending on the next songs base bpm, you want to transition to.
And at the same time, you will then do the necessary mixing, such as bringing the volume up and EQing, to smoothly transition to the next song.
So the first step is this:
Set your tempo fader range to WIDE. To do that on Rekordbox DJ, just click this section here, and to do this on Serato, just click this section here.
Now for this example we’re going to transition from a low bpm to a high bpm. Later on, I’ll show you how to transition from a high bpm to a low bpm.
Anyway, the 2nd step is to load both your songs, which ideally have long intros and outros. And set the song you want to transition from as master, and activate sync on the song you want to transition to.
Now however you affect the bpm of the 1st song, the 2nd song will follow.
Third step is to play the first song, and wait for it’s outro section. While that is happening, make sure you next song is armed and ready to play once you reach that section. Keep in mind that the volume fader of the next song is all the way down,
So once the mix in section has been reached, the next step is to play the next song and slowly mix it in, all while bringing the tempo fader of the 1st song closer and closer to the next songs base BPM.
Please note that when you adjust the tempo fader, you do it as smoothly as you can, as to not disrupt the vibe of the dance floor.
It’s also important to note that having a long outro and intro for both songs is ideal, to give you more leeway to mix and transition.

I get shit from my peers for djing with sync, so much that I use more time between b2b2b to make sure the sync is off so they don’t know I used it, but after learning to count bars I don’t use it as much but I do love me a mix that brings the tempo up like a build up for a dubstep drop it’s all love

Using sync is fine, so long as people respect and make the most of its advantages, like with techniques like this!
When I did my first dj gig I had nothing except traktor on a laptop and a portable mouse (no controller!) and the guys I was playing with were all on vinyl. I was very aware of the advantages I had, so made the most of it. So I made sure I was mixing harmonically, mixing fast, using effects and utilising all 4 decks - doing things which were impossible or at least difficult with turntables. If I had played a set which was no more technical than what the guys on turntables were spinning, then that would be lazy of me, I was aware of the advantages I had with sync so I used them! I since got a set of turn tables and 11 years on I’m about to get my first controller!

I got no problems with sync, if used right. This tutorial is a good example, and a technique I use myself. I don't even care if a DJ just uses it to match the tempo. There's very little difference between tapping that sync button, and matching your tempo just looking at the bpm counter. I don't like if the beatgrid is off and a DJ trainwrecks because they are too reliant on sync and didn't bother to prepare/check their track beforehand.
As someone who spent years manually beatmatching on turntables, I'm glad there's ways to speed up the workflow. Even better these things can give us new and creative ways to mix songs together.

I think DJs complaining about the sync button act really stupid. It's not about how many buttons you tap or how complicated you do things, the result is what matters. Nobody in the crowd is gonna care it u used sync because 99% of them are NOT DJs. They are just normal people who wanna have a great time. Thanks for the video anyways! I was searching for this!

Seems like a very good place to use sync, in my opinion. If you want to simultaneously adjust the tempos of two different tracks, then sync seems to be the way to do that.
The reason I wouldn't use sync for general use is that I would want the control of being able to easily move back into tempo once the new song begins and it gets confusing if you don't have the tempo faders in the 'real' position, even if you disengage sync once the new track if playing by itself.

As a veteran dj, I hate that there's a sync button. But I will say that for mixes like this, it comes in super handy. Thanks for showing this old dog new tricks.

I only use the sync to match the bpm because on the ddj sb3 it's hard to dial in the exact bpm witht the slider, other than that, I don't use the sync to match the beat I do all that by ear

Ah okay. I was doing a mix and the sync was set to master the entire time, so it kept all the songs I was playing at the original BPM of the initial song even though it was long gone. I was wondering why my entire set seemed really slow and wasn't matching the beat of the newer tracks!

I have an issue, if I press sync the following song (95bpm) does not sync to the speed of the master song(150bpm).
    Instead it halved(75bpm)...
Do anyone know how to fix this?

It should work the same way as on Rekordbox! Let me try to play around with Serato and see the difference, but as long as they're in sync, it should work the same!

Great vids. Personally...I am all for the sync button. Most of the time I was drunk when I was a club DJ and really could have used one back then. :)
Just getting into controllers...question if you happen to see this.
Can you simulate turning the power off to a turntable with a controller? I don't mean the wind up/wind down effect of hitting start/stop. I mean when you kill the power and it coasts to a stop. thanks again for the videos.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад +1

Unfortunately, I don't think so. You could probably manipulate the brake effect on some equipment to simulate that very slow stop, but it's not really something you can do on most controllers.
