    3:19 idk if anyone talked about it but that was Seppuku the practice of cutting ones belly to regain honor and having someone take your head almost immediately with one swing.
    instead of executing him and shaming him the Kensei is giving him the chance to die with honor

      the decapitation is a newer addition to seppuku
      for example if Japan had the death penalty by seppuku you would get decapitated after the act in order to give a fast death. but seppuku was supposed to be a slow death and the slower the death the more honorable and stronger the samurai

    • @st3v3nk3
      @st3v3nk3 2 года назад +7

      Yepp, this move is brutal but still heroic, "uplifting" He deeply respect the opponent, and become his opponent assitant in sepukku(death in praise), what was almost the highest honor in the medieval Japan.

    • @st3v3nk3
      @st3v3nk3 2 года назад +8

      @@samuraispeltwrong Okay but this cannot be too long in teh game..
      Anyway the decapitation in seppuku has one rule: If the assistant see the man who commit the sepukku start loose his bravery and would show sign of agony and pain, the assistant "save him from the shame" and help him to keep his honor and triumph in Death. The assistants were samurais too, and they also well known the doer of the seppuku.
      So if you could use an assistant in seppuku, it was a big honor also to the assistant, also to who comited the sepukku.

    The historical sources that the development team used for all factions is a really good way of getting into a bit of the history. Obviously the two factions are Japan and China. The former I don't have much knowledge on, but the latter (Wu Lin) have underpinnings in the historical weapons as well as shaolin. The double hook sword is something that us fun to learn. Ranton had a video on the Wu Lin's first 4 characters as he actually did study and live at the shaolin temple. Not monetization friendly though.

    Fun fact, the Kensei's sword is in fact real, and is in fact VERY capable of decapitating some *one* or some *thing* with ease, provided it's in the right hands.
    Based on how easily the Kensei handles his sword, the Nodachi, you can understand that he's probably trained with it his entire life. They're an exceptionally difficult sword to handle, the obvious reason being their length.

    22:31, the "girl with the really long sword", her name is Fu Huo and her class is called Zhanhu (fighting tiger in Chinese) and that character is based on a real historical figure that existed centuries ago, precisely the Jin Yi Wei. Those were the secret police of the Chinese empire, like some sort of KGB or CIA but way tougher and ruthless and they got lots of power in their hands, also all of them were of noble extraction, just like Fu Huo and her male counterpart Sun Da.
    In-game they're masters of the Changdao which is a Chinese long sword which was also a heavy infantry weapon and in-game they weild it like it's nothing. In fact they weild it so well and gracefully that some of their attacks are hard to parry. They're also masters of fire ingame so they're quite vicious to deal with in 4v4s.

    The sword that Kensei (the first Samurai hero shown) is using is called a Nodachi. This is a much larger variant of a Katana, and it's usually used as an anti-cavalry weapon (you would chop off the horse's legs as it was charging you, thus sending its rider flying when it collapses).

    Seppuku is an honorable death where the person stabs their stomach with a small dagger and someone else cuts their head off. It's used to also re-honor someone who has done things to make them and /or their family dishonorable. Though some people tried to do Seppuku without having their head cut off leading to a slow death.

    The execution with the first samurai (kensei) where the victim stabs themselves before getting their head cut off is called Seppuku (I believe, I could be wrong :P) It was a real thing in samurai culture and was seen as an honorable death. Although the way it is done in for honor is slightly different, still same idea.

    Ware Shinaba is basically an assisted voluntary seppuku (probably to reduce the endurance of pain for the victim), where it, usually done by the Japanese as a form of suicide, was done to restore honour for themselves or for others if defeated in battle and wanted to die honourably by their code, Japanese being Bushido. (I am not Japanese btw, but still an Asian)
    -Good job using the term hara-kiri, it's just rarely used amongst Japanese

    I'm sure someone's already done this, but here's some historical facts about weapons of the samurai (in order of appearance of the characters)
    Kensei: The Nodachi, or Odachi, which is essentially a two handed sword version of a katana. The japanes had a different form of measurement called a shaku, which is equivalent to about 11 inches. Nodachi were to have 3 shaku, while the katana were 2 shaku. Nodachi were specifically battle weapons, meaning they were not intended to parade around town like you would a katana.
    Orochi: the Iconic katana. Despite pop culture and popular opinion, katanas were meant to be secondary weapons, though eventually they became their own primary after the nodachi went out.
    Shinobi: the Kusarigama is one of many weapons in a shinobi's arsenal that were converted farm tools. While the line between historical shinobi weapons and pop culture are a little fuzzy, the kusarigama is a known weapon of the shinobi, though it was used less often for practical reasons.
    Hitokiri: the masakari or ono is just a typical woodsman axe. While the shape of the blade is diverse, masakari only had one head. Ubisoft claimed the hitokiri's weapon has two heads is to make the weapon more unique, as all other axes had one head.
    Kyoshin: the shikomizue is essentially the samurai's cane sword. It's made famous for the person who used it, Zatoichi, a fictional blind samurai.
    Shugoki: the kanabo or tetsubo has one of the most fearsome reputations in japanese weaponry. It's size was very diverse, ranging from the length of a forearm to even the size of the wielder. The kanabo is used by the Oni, the legendary japanese ogres. The practicality of the weapon itself had no art to it like the katana or bow did. It's capable of smashing armor and breaking bone with relative ease. The knob on the end is meant to be a counterweight, similar to the pommel of European longswords.
    Nobushi: the naginata is yet another well known weapon of feudal japan. Two groups of soldiers were well known to wield them: the wives of lords when they needed to defend the castle or the many warrior monks of japan, known as sohei. One of the most famous sohei was Benkei, a warrior monk who guarded a bridge until either someone defeated him or claimed a thousand blades from victories. Benkei's final moments were at the battle of koromo river, where he died standing upright, despite being riddled with arrows.
    Aramusha: since aramusha uses the same weapons as the orochi, here's another tidbit about him. The aramusha is based off the ronin, or masterless samurai. The death of a master left the samurai to be ronin. While they were regarded as part of the peasant class, they themselves still called themselves samurai. This meant that they didn't try to make a living for themselves and often leeched off others.

      Whilst what you say is correct I just feel like pointing some misconceptions out about the Katana;
      first off the katana even if it is shorter than most western swords at the time the katana was always a two handed sword, the weight of it made it impractical to be used with one hand and the role for a one handed sword often fell on the wakizashi.
      Also the reason that the katana became the "main" weapon of samurai is not because the odachi went out of favour. Once shogun Tokugawa unified Japan he made certain sword lengths illegal which turned the odachi into a purely display weapon, and the Samurai main weapon, the Yari became impractical in the more urban environments like a rifle to a pistol.
      So in reality the katana became the main weapon for samurai the same way the police main weapon is the pistol. The katana never actually left its sidearm role even up to world war two where it was carried by officers.
      Sorry if this was "ranty", I just really like samurai history.

    • @Nehfarius

      BTW, in the case of Ronin, while it IS true that some just mooched off of others, many more actually traveled the land to find a new source of stable employment wherever they could find it. This is, in Japanese pop-culture, generally where the 'wandering swordsman' trope comes from.

      @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Some further context: Seppuku was essentially an honourable form of suicide that allowed a samurai who was going to die anyway, be it due to being defeated in battle or being "marked for execution" as a result of courtly/honour matters, to die at his own hands in a final act of honour. It was also an act that required the permission of whoever decides your fate at that time to perform, so the Kensei allowed this knight to die in this honourable manner as a sign of respect.
      A further sign of the Kensei's respect here is that the role of the "second" (cutting of the head) was considered a great burden. Performing it well would get you no fame, but messing it up would mean a lifetime of disgrace. So the second has nothing to gain and everything to lose in this duty. Hence, the Kensei's willingness to perform this duty for a defeated enemy shows how far he's willing to go in order to pay his respects while still ensuring that his enemy dies in the end.
      Additional notes: All of the Samurai heroes have this Seppuku execution and all the Wu-Lin have the execution where they gently put a lantern on the corpse of their foe, but the person who recorded the footage showed each only once to prevent the redundancy some of the earlier videos had since they always look the same.

    Kusarigama - The traditional Japanese weapon consists of a kama (Japanese sickle) with a chain-and-weight attached. It is brutal in close quarters but can also be thrown and retracted for medium-distance attacks.

    Samurai Weapons
    The ōdachi or nodachi is a type of traditionally made Japanese sword used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. The Chinese equivalent of this type of sword in terms of weight and length is the miao dao, and the Western battlefield equivalent is the longsword or claymore. The character for ō means "big" or "great"
    A katana is a Japanese sword characterized by a curved, single-edged blade with a circular or squared guard and long grip to accommodate two hands. Developed later than the tachi, it was used by samurai in feudal Japan and worn with the blade facing upward.
    The naginata is a pole weapon and one of several varieties of traditionally made Japanese blades. Naginata were originally used by the samurai class of feudal Japan, as well as by ashigaru and sōhei. The naginata is the iconic weapon of the onna-bugeisha, a type of female warrior belonging to the Japanese nobility. I would forge Bethany a Naginata, a weapon fit for a fierce woman.
    A kusarigama is a traditional Japanese weapon that consists of a kama on a kusari-fundo - a type of metal chain with a heavy iron weight at the end. The kusarigama is said to have been developed during the Muromachi period. The art of handling the kusarigama is called kusarigamajutsu. This is not my favorite, flashy but hard to master than a Katana.
    The kanabō is a spiked or studded two-handed war club used in feudal Japan by the samurai. Other related weapons of this type are the nyoibo, konsaibo, tetsubō, and ararebo. Related solid iron weapons with no spikes or studs are the kanemuchi and the aribo
    Wu Lin Weapons
    Dao - Dao are single-edged Chinese swords, primarily used for slashing and chopping. The most common form is also known as the Chinese sabre, although those with wider blades are sometimes referred to as Chinese broadswords.
    Hook swords - twin hooks, fu tao, hu tou gou or shuang gou is a Chinese weapon traditionally associated with northern styles of Chinese martial arts and Wushu weapons routines, but now often practiced by southern styles as well.
    Guandao - A guandao is a type of Chinese pole weapon that is used in some forms of Chinese martial arts. In Chinese, it is properly called a yanyuedao (偃月刀; lit. "reclining moon blade"), the name under which it always appears in texts from the Song to Qing dynasties such as the Wujing Zongyao and Huangchao Liqi Tushi.
    Staff - A bō, bong, pang, bang, or kun is a staff weapon used in Okinawa. Bō are typically around 1.8 m and used in Okinawan martial arts, while being adopted into Japanese arts such particular bōjutsu. Other staff-related weapons are the jō, which is 1.2 m long, and the hanbō, which is 90 cm long. Fun fact, im a bo staff practitioner going strong for 10 years.
    Changdao - A bō, bong, pang, bang, or kun is a staff weapon used in Okinawa. Bō are typically around 1.8 m and used in Okinawan martial arts, while being adopted into Japanese arts such particular bōjutsu. Other staff-related weapons are the jō, which is 1.2 m long, and the hanbō, which is 90 cm long.
    That's Weapons facts from yours truly, ill be back for more if needed

    3:22 I think he went behind him and chopped off his head for two reasons.
    1. Not to make his opponent afraid of dying by someone else's hand, so he got out of line of sight
    2. Less painful than the drawn out death that would have happened by a stab wound to the gut, but he still wanted his opponent to die honorably.

    The reason the Japanese weapons like katanas seem much cleaner and sharper, is because Japanese swords in general were made for slashing more than stabbing, while European swords were designed for fluid, quick movements and to be good at both. Katanas were also a bit on the heavy side for swords.

    • @biggusdickus1234
      @biggusdickus1234 2 года назад

      @@cayde6destiny894 Yes. It was a harder, higher carbon steel and a softer, loeer carbon steel. Thats why it curves the way it does, and why katanas tend to chip rather than simply snapping if faced with more pressure than the harder steel can normally handle.

    I do hope they make some knights and vikings who don't fall into the trope of having heavy blunt weapons. Some of the newer customization options for characters like the Wardan do have more realistic proportians, like the blade isn't super thick and all, but they all still use them as if these are heavy objects when they are in fact very graceful in use. The viking axes maybe not so such, but the longswords and zweihander is quite poorly represented as big clunky and heavy.
    The historical moves for these european swords are honestly more flashy in the manuals than what we see from japanese kendo but it is never shown like that in pop culture. Creators seem to forget that those swords have 2 edges to utilize in some very impressive fluid moves, but entertainment media never shows that unlike with chinese and japanese media which loves to show their respective martial artists as very over the top and flashy, though differently since Japan focuses more on the speed and cutting power fantasy of a katana while China likes the dancing spinning warriors. In china theres even a whole sport around impressive looking rehersed sword and spear fights AKA Wushu.
    I do wish more movies like Jet Li's Fearless existed. Would be perfectly over the top for a Beowulf movie.

    Kensei is your average samurai but with an odachi which is 180 cm (I use it in Kenjutsu). Orochi is what we call a weeb. Shugoki is what I call a giant panda with no remorse for killing. Nobushi is everyone's waifu and my personal favorite female character. Shinobi is the same as Orochi but actually better (in-game he is harder to play). Aramusha is an epic ronin (I have him to rep 70 so I have a biased opinion ofc). Hitokiri is everyone's kryptonite. Kyoshin is what we call an overpowered character.
    Tiandi is apparently based off of a Mongolian warrior (I am Mongolian lol). Nuxia is a Shuang gou expert (a very hard weapon to learn btw... I tried learning it and it took me a long time to do one cool move). Jiang Jun or JJ is an old general based off of Guan Yu. Shaolin is a monk who learned the most common style (Monkey style) with the bo staff. And Zhanhu is just a pyromaniac with a Changdao.
    All the character's explanations in a nutshell.
    Now all the for honor videos have been done (I'm guessing)... you should do some reaction to the HU band. They have some pretty good songs. Its a mix of rock or metal and Mongolian throat singing
