Gladiator's(guy with triden and small shield) shield is called buckler. It's main use is not to defend against arrows, but rather to parry and deflect enemy's sword attacks, witch it's better at due to being small and more manuverable than common, bigger shields. Also he's Gladiator, so that's why he's wearing so little armor and uses triden as his weapon

If the shield were about the same size as Conqueror's then you would be right in saying that it can block and deflect. However, because it is so small, it was primarily used for punching which is why most of his attacks and executions feature him punching with the shield

    • @johnstein7789
      @johnstein7789 3 года назад +30

@@drhaaxx2468 no..? Flat punches like Glad does in game are usually no threat to enemy's well-being, if you'd want to do proper attacks with the shield you'd use something like kite shield, and strike with the angled part. Buckler's whole design is to be duel-centered defensive weapon, that allows you to stay agile and quick, and offers better protection, primarily to your main hand, by covering it with buckler in offhand during strikes. If you're interested, there's a lot of material on bucklers and such from proper HEMA practitioners
Edit: while Conqueror's shield is great, it's designed to be useful in actual warfare - it protects you against arrows and such. While in duel it offers quite an advantage, it's quite cumbersome, and far less agile than other duel oriented weapons/tools like bucklers and parrying daggers

That's an error in regards the Gladiator wearing little to no armour, it all varies depending on which class of Gladiator you loon at but they often were quite well armoured and trained which is also why they rarely fought to the death

    • @johnstein7789
      @johnstein7789 3 года назад +3

@@booooooosh9511 yup, gladiatorial fights were akin to our WWE, as in - it was a show, not fight to death. However, on roman mosaics gladiators depicted as having fairly low amount of armour - mainly helmets, hand-shoulder protection and occasional leg protection. And why would they have more, considering they didn't need to have best equipment to survive. Now, someone like bestiarii, gladiators who fought animals, would probably have more armour. But in-game Gladiators are seemingly based off of Retiarius, ones with trident(and usually net, instead of buckler like in game) - and, at least amount of armour they had, is close to that in game

the execution where the knight pulled the pummel off and threw it is an actual move written down in a historical European fencing(general sword fighting not just the sport) manual that is colloquially known in HEMA circles as "end him rightly". Also the technique where they hold the blade is called "half swording" and is also present in a lot of historical fencing manuals. It developed because if an opponents even in just riveted mail can't be cut effectively, so the wielder basically turns the sword into a Warhammer with the shaft being the blade and the cross guard being the hammer spikes, and the bottom part of the blade being a but spike.

If you think Peacekeeper (ninja knight) is crazy, wait till you see the Shaman from the Viking faction. Also the blue knight is Larry and sometimes the devs let him take a vacation and replace him with another character. Also the reason some heroes have fewer executions is because they were released later than other heroes. The normal formula is 4 new heroes every year with other content such as executions and emotes being added throughout the year, so heroes who have been around longer accumulate more content over time. Loved the reaction and I can't wait for the next one!

The reason why the executions all start with the weapons already embedded in the enemy's body, is because an Execution only becomes available to players when they manage to finish off the enemy with a Heavy Attack, so once your Heavy lands, the weapon stays stuck in the enemy giving the player a few seconds to pick which of their 4 equipped Executions they want to use.
    Executions are a big part of play in For Honor. They give back Health to the player, and are bad for enemy morale xD . People will pick their Executions roughly based on these factors;
_1:_ How fast does it kill? (There's different timings in the animations for each Execution at which point the enemy is considered to be 'fully dead' and can no longer be revived by teammates. For example, any form of dismemberment in the animation = death because the body is no longer in playing condition)
_2:_ How long does the full animation last?
_3:_ Does the enemy get kicked/punched/shoved/thrown/launched off a ledge when positioned correctly?
    _4:_ Is it funny?
Oh also, fun fact!: Griffon and Lawbringer (Knight in full-plate armor with the Polearm) are the same person! Griffon, or 'Holden Cross' as he used to be known was a Lawbringer in the For Honor story mode.
There's a whole side-story about him going on a journey and finding comradery in a group of mercenaries with Warriors from all the different Factions, during which he learned a new fighting style (hence the new weapon) and learned the different languages of the mercenaries from his team, so when playing with him he's the only character with multi-lingual Voice lines :D

The executions where the knights hold the blade is a real technique called a half-sword. It is used to somewhat counter plate armour by striking the opponent with the guard (cross piece between the hilt and the blade) while holding the blade, typically with a gloved hand so that if the sword slips during the strike, they don't cut their hand. Also, knights actually didn't weight all that much in their chain mail and plate armour which is comparable to a soldier with standard equipment and a fully equipped fire fighter
The knights generally speaking have a mixture of brutal and graceful executions. The Vikings are just brutal with a weird fascination with heads, the samurai have clean and graceful executions while the Wu Lin are straight up disrespecting their opponents. I look forward to your reactions for Shugoki (fat guy with giant club), Orochi (tiny guy with small sword), Shaman (insane woman with a fascination for stabbing) and Valkyrie (spear and shield lady)

Technically, half swording is when you hold it similar to a spear, so you can make the end of the blade more rigid, and make it better for piercing. The quillon and pommel strikes, where you wield the sword the way you describe, is called a Mordhau (inspiration for the game of the same name), or Murder Strike/Stroke.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames In half-swording you actually would typically have one hand on the blade and the other on the handle (if you're right-handed like I am, for example, you'd grab the blade with your left hand and keep your right hand on the handle). It's only certain specific techniques WITHIN half-swording that would have you put both hands on the blade, and one of the most famous of those techniques is one you see in several of Warden's executions. It's the one where he grabs the blade in both hands and slams the crossguard (the part between the blade and handle) into his opponent. This is a specific anti-armor technique in half-swording known as the Mordhau, or "Murder-Stroke".

Actually that's a Trident. In the middle ages, it was used for fishing. But in Rome, the Gladiators of the Retiarius Class would be given a trident and a fishing net. There were a few Gladiator Classes and the one in FH is technically a Retiarus but too heavily armored and instead of a net they went with a buckler shield instead. When in reality, the Retiarus would only wear an Manica(Arm Guard) and a Galerus(Shoulder Guard). They're clothing only consisted of Loincloth held in place by a wide belt. For Honor's version is too heavily armored but he looks good. Also the other one with the short sword was a roman Centurion. A military commander

Something to note: the speed of these executions is important. In 4v4 and 2v2 games, the slower and more drawn-out the execution is, the more health you get back as the winner. However...you can be interrupted by another player. A good player will fill their 4 execution hotkeys with 2 short and 2 long executions based on the situation. Sometimes it's best to go with the quick decapitation if it means you guarantee the kill. You can only execute players if you kill them with a heavy attack. If you don't execute them, an ally can revive them and bring them back into the fight. Executions also add a few seconds onto the re-spawn timer, so a good player in 4v4 Domination will do that to delay the enemy team from having a full roster for as long as possible. The difference between taking 10 seconds to re-spawn and 18 seconds can really win the game.

My favourite execution is by far the Warden’s Moment of Silence
An execution used by Wardens to honour those they respect
If you get executed by a Warden using Moment of Silence, you have earned their respect, and they pray not only for your well-being, but also for you to return stronger than before, to show them a challenge once more, and to hopefully defeat them and prove your skill
Moment of Silence is at 2:26

    2. „effugisse debes“ = „you should have fleed“
    Peace keeper:
    1. „tu morīturus“ = „you are dead/you are going to die“
    2. „peri“ = „die“
    3. „saltem te tentavisti“ = „at least you tried“
    Lawbringer:
    1. „non effugere potes“ = „you can‘t flee/ there is no escape“
    2. „tu bene te ipse defendisti“ = „you defended yourself well“
    Centurion:
    1.„Pugnae non perfecta est“ = „the fight isn’t perfect“
    2. „Quod non rursum occidas“ = „you are not going to kill sombody else“
    3.“Infrimus“ = „weak“
    4.“movete“ = „move!“
    Gladiator:
    1. „Vade retro“ = „Go away“
    2. „Fīo“ (comes from „fieri“ infinitive form) = „I am made“
    3. „Audaces fortuna iuvat“ = ? (I don’t know this one)

Name of each character in order and fun fact about each of them:
Warden - One of my favorites. He's constantly pushing people with his shoulder.
Conqueror - he's constantly bashing people with his shield.
Peacekeeper - One of my favorites. She's constantly stabbing people and making them bleed.
Lawbringer - One of my favorites. He's constantly pushing people towards walls with the tip of the polearm.
Centurion - He's constantly punching people in the face.
Gladiator - He's constantly stabbing toes (you got that one Right)
Vortiger / Black Prior - One of my favorites. He's constantly bashing people with his shield.
Warmonger - She's constantly scratching people with her nails.
Gryphon - He's constantly kicking people in the chest.
Also, Vortiger, Warmonger and Gryphon have the least executions because they were the most recent knight heroes (in that order). Plus the devs haven't released character-unique executions in a long time.

31:37 quick side note, swords actually aren't that heavy or that thick. Its Hollywood and video games that have made people think they are. For example the big 2h sword used by the last knight would only be about 2-4kg(4.4-8.8lbs in american), which is actually more then handballed in one hand funnily enough. Another side note is that rapiers where also not that light and where equal in weight to what most people would consider to be a 1h sword, both bc again swords are actually quite thin, and also because they move a lot of the mass to complex style hilt from the blade.

This game isn't just a one on one fighting game, it also has a MUCH more popular 4 vs 4 mode, where you execute the player inorder to get more health and to keep the player from getting revived. The executions have to be fast to keep up with the pace of the game, because you have to go from one fight to another right away, and having his friend interrupt while you're taking your time killing him is a real threat.

The flail is one tough weapon to master. You have to wear armor to use the thing because of the heavy ball and how unpredictable the path can be. The small lady is based on the warriors of the assassin order who fought the knights Templar during the the holy land sieges aka the crusades. The Templar order never found what they were looking for but the assassins fought them like crazy. The assassin order was known for fast strikes that looked like a whirlwind of steel blades taking as few hits to quickly kill someone. They wore lighter armor to lighten the load but still protected well usually made of leather topped with chainmail or steel plates which gave good protection from the knights heavy weapons.

The tiny shield is either a targe or a buckler. With training it can be decently effective in duel situations. The small size is also convenient for carrying it as well as being able to quickly grab it in a surprise fight. You would probably never see one on a medieval battlefield though. Instead it would be the classic round viking shield or the knights kite shield.
