Worms 3D's Ludicrous Hidden Trophy

- I've been wanting to talk about Worms 3D again for quite some time, but this topic definitely isn't something I would've expected to be able to talk about. I was just digging about in the game's code out of curiosity, and stumbled across something I had never seen anyone talk about that I figured would make for a perfect topic for a smaller scale silly lil vid, so I hope you enjoy!

Fun Fact: In preparation for this video, Big Yellow played Worms 3D live on stream. During said stream, they spent nearly two and a half hours attempting to do a single speedrun skip in the second level of the game. The clip shown at 1:03 is a demonstration of this skip.
I'd do it again too
@@BigYellowSilly i'd watch it all over again, shit was entertaining
two and a half hours for a seconds long clip. this channel is so good man
First try
finally caught a big yellow stream, they spent two hours trying to do a single trick then fell asleep live on stream. great entertainer they are.
imagine being obsessed with a 20 year old game. how will you get your audience of fighting game fans and RBY enjoyers to hear you out on one of those??
At this point, I am no longer a fighting game spectator, I am a Big Yellow enjoyer.
I am just here for the slow trainwreck of inevitable trooning out.
Your Joke
Their Head
If Super Eye Patch Wolf managed to pivot from anime to wrestling, Yellow covering a game is piece of cake
Honestly I'm not really either of these I just watch Big Yellow for the hell of it
"So if you wanted to complete Woms 3D with the lowest possible completion percent, this is mandatory." My god, it's a new "Link stares at a rupee for 17 hours" speedrun
Best thing is, it's pretty close at ~16.7 hours
Nice to know that the Twilight Princess low% run where Link stares at a rupee for several hours to phase into a wall has a worthy contender in the form of a Worms 3D low% run
I mean I know the funny TP low% isn't as absurdly high as it used to be, but still
what about the celeste minimum grabs speedrun where you need to keep the game open for over 100 hours and it makes spikes bug out and lose their hitboxes, and it goes away when you beat the level so you have to do it like 3 or 4 times over the course of the run
And Hollow Knight true ending low% where you have to murder bees for 50 hours
God, low% truly is the most wild speedrun category for some games and I'm absolutely here for it
@@AshenDust_I can still hear the buck bumble theme in the back of my head every single time this comes up
I would prefer low% NMG tbh
Fun fact: You can crash every 3D game in the Worms franchise and corrupt your save data if you make a tunnel of 12-20 girders (floor, walls and ceiling), control a worm in the middle and spin the camera round. They all use the same engine on all platforms and the vertex culling bug that causes the crash was never fixed.
Including Worms Forts?
@@Thornskade Yep, including Worms Forts
@@xj8713 Could you also invoke this with a custom map or is there something specific to girders that causes this? Also, why does it corrupt save data?
@@Thornskade You can set up a custom map so the water doesn't rise and you have infinite girders sure, it makes it easier to pull it off. You technically don't need girders, they just make it easier to see the glitch.
The glitch is something to do with camera rendering - it happens whenever the worm in play is surrounded by terrain in a way that forms a long narrow tunnel with thin walls and the camera is outside of the tunnel and unable to snap to the worm in play. You get a crash with the screen displaying a 50% transparency version of one camera angle on top of a display of another camera angle and a text box pops up displaying a message about rendering maximum something.
I don't remember it very well since it's been years but I could reproduce it in all of the 3d games and my save data for whichever game I did it in was always corrupted. I had an xbox for this but my friend could also reproduce it on ps2.
I would love if someone would showcase that ngl.
That's so insane bro!
oh baybee i love worms 3d i'm gonna worm~ uuuugh
The backspace exists for a reason sweetie ❤
I would be happier if you were not here
I believe in the power of reform. But by god this makes me question it
*Extremely Loud Incorrect Buzzer*
I think worms 3d loves you too ❤️
I really like how the lighting and your appearance create the illusion that this is some kind of 1970s home video whenever it's just you. I genuinely mean that in the nicest way possible I really dig the aesthetic
Another game in the pile of "absurd low% runs", absolutely beautiful
I love games that put in an excessive amount of effort for things the vast majority of players won't even see. There's something so nostalgic about that kind of game design.
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Ocean and the Lost Wings is a great example of a game like this - it's a JRPG with a card battling system, but with an added twist that basically your way of interacting with objects used this card system as well, and an absolute ton of cards have different states that change the cards based on certain factors within the game, one of those being real life time being spent. So for example, you could turn a hot water source into a card of that likeness, but after enough time passes, the card would "age" and become room temperature water. This would also apply to things like food cards that were often used for healing during battles and such.
If you were the kind of kid that would sit down and 100% a JRPG like I was, this game was an absolute nightmare. There were many missable cards in the game, tons of "point of no return" areas for certain segments and enemies, random drops, and some cards took absurd amounts of real life time in order to age enough to transform - I remember there was one that took all day, I had to leave my gamecube running while I was at school for it. There's also Photograph cards for every single enemy and boss that you can only get by taking the enemy picture with the camera card you had to put in your deck, and if you missed any of the enemies or bosses, oh well, start a new file! I think I played through that game like 5 times or so, each time learning more and more about which cards not to miss and stuff, and I still wasn't *that* close to 100%. Good times....
Current 100% world record speedrun is 337h 55m 00s, by the way!
@@Putnam3145 That's the SPEEDRUN time?!
Well, this isn't really "content" that you're supposed to see or anything, it's just a way to code the game easier that doesn't lead to a crash if you don't get the bronze trophy
@@LloydTheZephyrian Oh, yes. There's no way past a lot of those real-time cards, you just have to let it rock. As I recall, the biggest problems are that:
1. There's a card that requires two full weeks, which is 336 hours you *cannot* shorten by any means
2. Menuing pauses the timer (!!)
@@Putnam3145 Were the devs sadistic or something?
There's nothing I enjoy more than hearing people with an unhealthy obsession for a random, old-school video-game ramble on about obscure things about it. Excellent video
Also ftr I remember mentioning a while back that I wanted to make a second vid on Worms 3D, but this defo isn't what I had in mind. This is just a random goofy thing I stumbled across I had an overwhelming urge to ramble about, at some point I do wanna make a vid talking about why this game fucks and why Team 17 desperately need to rerelease it so more people can experience peak.
(Also at 11:48 I meant to say 8 instead of 7 my b I can't count)
Also another semi-correction, I was playing Worms 3D on stream and unlike what happened while testing for this video the CPU actually did attack the NPC, the mission is still entirely possible as I did manage to get them stuck in an endless loop of skipping turns for this video, but getting that to happen might be more specific than I expected.
The original worms on PS1/PC will always be superior imo.
Will Mr Yellow ever make a video on Worms Mayhem....
please don’t use the word “insane”… that word has been used to misinform about and stigmatize people with mental illnesses ever since it was first coined… we don’t need to be reminded of that when we’re watching gaming videos about silly worms achivements… it doesn’t matter if you used it in a “different context”, it’s still offensive.
please respond in a respectful, sincere way. and not with lazy careless trolling. thank you.
Could you please change your profile picture @katelyn I don't appreciate the context and I find it offensive.
@@originaluseername thank you! I'll make sure to use words like "mentally unstable" and "slow" in place of words like crazy and insane from now on, to be more respectful.
God I'd love to know if the devs ever realized this. This feels like the sort of thing that could either come naturally just as a result of how they did the trophy system for the ranking mode you talked about, or if they actually hacked it in manually to prevent the game from crashing if someone did somehow wait it out.
it seems to me like a case of conflicting developer intent. Someone set the clear trophy as the default worst trophy, and then someone else comes along later and decides that bronze should be the lowest obtainable trophy and uses the easiest/lowest effort method to make it the default, but never actually overwrites the clear one
@@epekka More likely - they set up the mechanism with 4 outcomes to use in challenges and reused it in missions. But in missions they only needed 3, so they used "infinite" time target.
Most likely explanation is that campaign missions and challenges are instanced in the same way. In challenges it's entirely intentional that the player can fail to get a bronze time, but in the campaign they're supposed to always at the very least get bronze just for beating a level.
However, you can't leave the bronze time variable empty as that causes a Null Pointer Exception once the game tries to refer to that variable. Nor can you set the variable to be an infinite or indefinite value for various reasons. So the developers set the bronze time to an arbitrarily high value. They could have potentially set the time much longer - the original Doom had powerups intended to last until the end of level have a duration over 1420 days, or near 4 years.
While the developers probably did not intend for anyone to take over 16 hours to beat the level, the game still has the code to handle such an occurence, even if it was intended for a different context. The developers probably knew this, and probably simply didn't deem it worthwhile to "fix" something that is non-fatal and unlikely to ever occur naturally/organically. So yeah, basically what the person above me said, but in more detail.
This is the only youtube channel that can make me drop everything and intently watch an entire video from start to finish as soon as I see a notification
It's great to see some praise for Worms 3D. It is easily my favorite and most played Worms game, but so many people sleep on it because of how different it is from the traditional 2D games.
I played so much of this with my brothers when I was little. Could never really like the other Worms games, but 3d will always be a banger
worms armageddon is still my favorite, but worms 3d will always hold a special place in my heart because all the time as like a wee-little 6 year old baby i used to not be able to use the homing missile and would struggle on that training level for like an hour
i only actually completed it when i was like 9
I bought Armegeddon a few months ago and got _completely destroyed_ by it. I got to "Sand In Your Eye" and decided it's too hard for me (seriously how am I supposed to get half of my worms out of their bad positions without some insane Rope tricks that I'm not good enough for?). Even the obligatory training took me a few tries, which would be unheard of in the 3D games I've played. I don't remember how I did in Revolution when I first started and did the tutorial, but I'm sure it wasn't as bad as this! I even played a bit of Revolution before Armageddon to get used to 2D Worms and I did... admittedly pretty bad, but it didn't _feel_ as brutal as Armageddon.
Why am I so bad at video games? I don't want to be the "i'm not the problem, the game is" type of guy, so the only logical thing to do is "insult" myself. :/ I mean, people say Armageddon is good, so it _has_ to be a "me" problem, right?
*EDIT:* I guess I _do_ remember struggling with the first missions in Worms Forts when I first played it long, LONG time ago... but I was a stupid kid. Surely I should be better by now, right?
@@robertlupa8273 you dont suck at worms, worms is just hard as hell to learn
like seriously the only reason i every did that training or any other missions was because i played the 2d games with my dad all the time, i still quite enjoy replaying old missions in worms armageddon
although i lost the disk for worms 3d on my xbox 360 a while ago
I legitimately want another 3-D worms game or a re-release. I just want it.
I need it so bad especially if they were willing to add some extras like widescreen support and maybe a hard mode for the campaign
You've really became my favorite youtuber over the last couple of months. Your topics are so interesting to me and i love your humor
The concept of rewarding players with the absence of a trophy just tickles me.
i saw the notification for this right as i was going to sleep and then my whole dream was me trying to convince you to do a video about the "Big Yellows" from each of your favorite/frequently covered franchises. biggest yellow lego pieces (or most frequently used?). biggest yellow pokemon. etc. it was incredibly silly
you should do that i think
Never played worms but am still fascinated by this.
Same.
Congrats, Big Yellow, you just added at least 16 hours to the Worms 3D Low% speedrun.
They will curse your name forevermore.
Correction: 16 hours per level where the clear trophy is possible.
The love a game to look at code pipeline is real.
"Now on it's own this information might not seem super interesting, like so what idling in a mission for over 16 hours gets you a thing that looks slightly different from the normal thing, whatever"
As if this isn't the exact reason most of your audience is here in the first place.
I really love that someone is finally covering Worms 3D as its own separate thing compared too the other 3D Worms games. I feel oddly validated by that haha.
I quite liked the trophy system from 3D. It's something that prior and future Worms games generally avoid and instead task you to clear in one certain set time limit. This also means you don't get the funny little cutscenes showing how well you did. It gives the game a more arcade-y feel than the others.
In a way it's closer to a ranking system in a SEGA game, which makes sense since 3D was co-produced by SEGA.
My [Testament-Class Gender Anomaly] you did NOT end this video on a perfect "innit"
I feel like you could have a really sick channel banner filled with the silly little guys from the various topics you cover
I love Big Yellow's name because it makes them seem as though they were an insidious lobby for the color yellow
Big yellow when small yellow walks in
more big yellow worms content makes me so happy thank you
I'm just glad to not be the only person with an attachment to 3D Worms. Sure it's easier to miss things in 3D space, sure the engine was a bit sluggish, sure the closest thing to user-generated stages is the kinda crappy procgen in Worms 3D, sure 4 Mayhem's custom weapons didn't turn out to be particularly interesting. But dang there's just something about the experience of "being in a space" that you just don't get in the 2D ones, as good as Armageddon is.
Worms 3D had this unique feel of fantastical fantasy worlds... the visuals, the music...
Havent watched the video yet but I just felt like mentioning another bizarre achievement in a game. Invisible Inc. is a game that involves futuristic technology and hackers and stuff. So, to fit the themes, there is an achievement in the game that literally requires you to modify the games code; its completely impossible to get the achievement otherwise.
That jazz jackrabbit music murdered me with nostalgia
It warms my heart when someone I follow just, makes a video or do a stream on whatever the fuck they want. No matter what I'll watch it regardless
Warms your worms you mean
"This is where id put my trophy, IF I HAD ONE"
Im glad the word insane was used to really emphasize how freaking bonkers this is
You can tell the sheer amount of ‘here, have an info’ energy from the ending of this video
I love it
I remember being *obsessed* with the Demo of Worms Ultimate Mayhem. I know this is a 3D video (esp after that intro), but does the full game hold up?
I think Ultimate Mayhem is still really fun, the steam port has some unfortunate jank like mouse jitter and the online is horrendous, but it's worth grabbing on sale I'd say
@@BigYellowSilly what about the GoG version (if that even exists)? Is that more viable?
@@BigYellowSilly you need a patch to even play ultimate mayhem on windows 10 atleast because the mouse input is fucked up due to the fact that the mouse isn't locked in the middle when not using the weapon selector thingy
I love when people find weird obscure stuff in their niche games they love

Oh yeah this is going in the "Big Yellow Random Useless Factoids, Mostly About Games I Dont Play" playlist.

Big Yellow my beloved ❤
never played a worm before but I'll be damned if this video wasn't fascinating regardless, good job on the info, delivery, and editing, I was thoroughly entertained
I was bored, but...the safest level in the game...is called GRAVE DANGER?!?! XD That destroyed me!
Worms 3D has a big place in my heart due to childhood nostalgia so I fully support any and all nerdy Worms 3D videos. You're making me wanna look at obtaining a copy for PC to play around with.
I got the impression from this video that all the game's data files are just compleely open and accessible for nosing around and fiddling with. Is that the case? If so that might make me get it sooner. There's nothing I love more than older games that didn't feel the need to obscure their inner workings. Recently found out Crash Time 2 (another childhood nostalgia game for me) has all its audio files stored completely unencrypted in the game's directory and I had a lot of fun hearing the horrible english dub voice lines in their raw form. If only I could say the same about the data files
Big Yellow making a guide for how to be terrible at a game they love is peak content
Love this type of content from you. Genuinely your channel is such a gem
You're one of the only people I have notifications on for. Every video of yours is an entertaining watch.
Before actually watching the video, I just gotta say your hair looks incredible

Man. I love these videos you made about Worms3D. Thanks a lot
I remember how it took me almost a full day to download Worms 3D back in the day only to realize I could only play a trial demo.
I was able to play 4 Mayhem though, but I still missed Worms 3D. I guess I'll just have to look for other unconventional methods to get it since its not on Steam :(
Please do. Worms 3D is a great game from what I remember. Definitely better with friends, but the campaign and Deathmatches are absolutely fun enough to justify playing it by yourself.
I already wanted to see you do a longplay of Worms 3D, but now I want to see a minimum% longplay.
A video on Worms 3D and I've noticed some music from Etrian Odyssey? This video really is peak.
Would you still love me if I was Worms 3D?
A polished re-release of Worms 3D, Forts, and even an updated Mayhem would be so nice. I'm especially keen on revisiting Forts.
Just give us "Worms 3D Trilogy" already!
Just want to say it's ok to be obsessed with a game from 2003. One of my most favorite games of all time is Silent Hill 3, and lookie when that game came out...
Does that apply to cartoons? Asking for... myself. >_>
@@robertlupa8273 Well, having gone over Wiki's list of animated shows in 2003 there are more than a few that still occupy my brainspace, so I can't judge.

Babe, wake up, new Big Yellow Worms video
I'm a huge Worms 3D fan and I play it every week. Just wish I had the moded PC version, im stuck with the gamecube.
Two days ago as of wrtitng this someone added information about clear trophies at The Cutting Room Floor Worms 3D page with your video as a source! Congrats!
Using this comment to try to gather info about the Worms game bundled with the Sony Ericsson Walkman W600 and if it's any way to play it without original hardware. Unironically I would love to do an actual speedrun of this game sometime I believe only 3 people have attempted it
@@BigYellowSilly I saw! that'd be so sick FR! Fun stream idea TBH
There's something very odd I remember about Worms 3D on the Gamecube, that I'd be very curious to hear you talk about, because I can't find much information about it online.
It was a tip that I believe I read in a magazine at the time, that explained that in the level "Nobody Rides for Free", if you blew up the roof of Patrick's booth and ended the mission, you would get an easter egg and unlock the Mega Mine in the options. I remember doing it, and weirdly enough it did trigger a message like "congratulations you have found a-" but then the mission would end before I got to see the rest of it. It did seem like there was some sort of secret there, but I never understood how it worked or what it did exactly (heck I never even ONCE found a Mega Mine in this game).
It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Worms 3D, and it's left me puzzled all these years.
I figured you might know something about it?
"It's a bit of an awkward game to be obsessed with. It's nearly twenty years old at this point-"
DoomGods: *_NNF!_*
The fact that the game blatantly lies to you about the Holy Hand Grenade's damage, just fuels my trust issues towards game devs.
god do I wanna see a worms low% run now
yes please we need more content of this game that has a total of five fans including me
god i wish worms 3d was on steam haha good vid
I love the tran's worm community
That doesnt mean what you think it means
Hey, I really liked this video. Just a quick tip: when you're telling a story like that it's much more engaging and interesting if you present it in a form where you don't hint on the answer from the beginning.
For example, in the part where you talk about the mission with the NPC, you say "I figured it would be impossible" which immediately hints that you found a way that didn't make it impossible. It'd feel much more engaging if you framed it in a way like "I draeded this mission, you see it has this NPC blah blah, but as it turns out, enemy worms actually completely ignore it lol" (ofc just a simplified explanation, i think you get what I mean).
Other than that, really good video and I'd love to watch moer of your content.
I never even knew this game existed before and now I really want to play it.
Oh man, you talking about doing random shit reminded me of something very silly I kept doing i played Worms 4 as a kid. I would find a map some large landmass a big volume, then "mine" out a tunnel system with the shotgun. Like a mole. It was so cool! For some reason.
I also would build as high as you could with girders then spam Flood (which was mistranslated as "Żywność", aka "Food" in my copy lol) and just kinda.. admire the map as it went underwater. That was also super cool. For some reason.
There was also a pretty vibrant modding scene for it. Mostly maps and cosmetics, but there was some actual custom weaponry and whatnot. The forums and sites hosting all of it are all long dead though sadly.
This is wild to me cause I used to do those exact same things in Worms 3D and I had no idea why they were so satisfying to me, something about shotgun tunneling really clicked with me
Oh man, I remember playing on the King Kong map in 3D and making tunnels in the middle building with Shotgun too. I'm even pretty sure I remember what I was listening to in the background - a let's play of a Star Wars game (though I don't remember if it was Clone Wars: Republic Heroes or Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast).
Why do I remember random sh%t like this but not what the therapist told me literally 1 minute ago? >_
it took me until now to realize that we were digging tunnels in the ground in a game called _worms._ it all makes sense now
Yo Etrian Odyssey OST? Popping off rn, been obsessed w/ the soundtracks for these games for ages

A new big yellow video, POG
man the memories, remember training like crazy with bazooka and grenades without using q
You’re lowkey making me wanna give this game a shot
I love this game, would love to see you do more content on it!
I loved that game, but stuck at that one level with alien saucer Crop Circler
I got stuck on that one for ages as a kid too, probably should've been later in the campaign
I got stuck on like every other mission in Under Siege when I was a kid. "Ohh, and it makes me Wonder", "Pharaoh Enough!", "In Hot Persuit", "Ship of Fools", "The Final Assualt", "Rise of the Monks" (I HATE UNDER SIEGE'S JETPACK :v), "Rise, Fall, Rise etc... Oh Whatever!"... and I don't remember anything from the medieval chapter, so I guess I got stuck on the last oriental mission for long enough to just give up. Deathmatch 4 was also too hard for me. It's the one where you start with barely anything and have to collect crates.
The worst thing is, I don't think I ever came back to Under Siege, so I don't know if it was just kid me being bad or if I'm just bad in general. :/
every new video is worth it just to see how much cuter big yellow has gotten, you're doing amazing sweetie
Awesome find. Loved these games growing up.
Dang, Mayhem wasn't the game I grew up with? How could I get a hold of the true Worms 3D, then? I only ever had it on XBox, but seeing it here made me realize just how much I want to play it again.
I also learned that I played barely any of the campaign. I think I got kinda stuck at the little farm with rising water? Or some parachute/infiltration thing in a palace?
There's a site called myabandonware that I believe is safe to download the PC ver from, if you don't wanna risk it then all of the console versions are just fine
Worms 4: Mayhem, was my childhood. i am so sad we didn't get any new 3d worm game.
