  • Removing the remaining grafted portion of this Ficus Ginseng, Ficus Microcarpa. After removing this trunk, the tree with have a top that is natural to its base.
Grafting trees is an important horticultural process, and has its place for producing robust result in plant and trees. For me, I see it as a necessary technique for helping trees survive. This Ficus has been grafted for aesthetics purposes, and I’d much rather it have it natural leaves. Most likely, a smaller leaf ficus variety has been grafted onto the root of a Ficus ginseng root base. Ive waited near two years for the tree to send out a branch below the grafted portion.. Im excited to start the transition to a more natural leaf form.
    0:00 Evaluation
0:18 Using hybrid branch pruners to remove the right grafted branch
0:28 Switching to a pull saw; all my pruners are too small for the diameter of the trunk
2:00 Cutting around an aerial root; I would like to save the root to help speed up the cutting rooting process
3:25 Cleaning up the cut point; making the area more concave
5:35 Sealing the edges of the wound with a beeswax salve; The sealer will help to speed up the healing process
    7:38 Final review

thank you Nigel! I appreciate your wisdom. I followed your lead .. as youve said many times, it’s better to attempt to make the correction today than grow the tree out with regrets🙏🏾

Its a beeswax salve. I wouldnt recommend it for ficus, but its what i had on hand. works great on other specimen!
