  • Tiger Bark Ficus, Ficus microcarpa, is a tremendously resilient tree, as are all Ficus. This tree was purchase from a garden center at a big box store. It came planted in coco peat only. I didnt think anything of it except it did not really grow much in the six months after purchasing it. Well, once I repotted the tree I found out why-The tree was suffering from a rotting trunk. The rot went all the way up the trunk into the canopy ...!
After cutting away most of the rotting wood, I made a ground layer technique and planted for 6months. Today, I will uncover the results.. will the tree have new roots or has it suffer a terminal fate?
Lets see if we can SAVE THIS TREE!

Often trees that recover from major trauma end up to be awesome trees! This one is looking good with some nice character to the trunk!

Found one of these at a local garden center and it had the same issue. Rotten trunk. After watching this video I carved away the rot with my woodcut gouge and layered spaghnum moss around the damaged area. I’m hopeful there will be roots soon.
