I really like when you show us a short clip or pictures of the same tree from some years ago, it really shows the development of the tree over time!

I love the tree and pot. Like a huge tree growing over a temple in Cambodia.
I love the roots on this tree and I'm really glad you didn't prune the ones flowing out of the pot, it definitely gives the planting a really unique vibe! I could totally picture this tree in some ancient temple, almost forgotten, other than an occasional pruning. I personally love bonsai that are bordering on the wild side, it just looks much more natural than some super manicured, perfectly styled tree
Agreed! I'm trying to work out how best to care for my f.ginseng with minimal interference 🤔
You've made some pretty bold moves with this one, I really like the "sculpted" rootbase! 😀 Your choice of pot also suits the tree well.
I love your ficus microcarpa ginseng bonsai. The way you made the pot is awsome!
so nice to see you working on the trees again after all the maintenance and reconstruction on the plant room. love it! :)
It's not often that I come across a video longer than a few minutes that I am willing to watch until the end. I really enjoy your content!!
Now there’s something you don’t see every day! Nigel choosing a low branch over a higher branch!
The bob ross of the bonsai world! Love this x
Great seeing the back story weaved into present time. Thanks
I really like the 3d printed bonsai pot of yours... thanks Nigel for these wonderful inspiration you spread via your channel 😊
Welcome back Nigel! Looking forward to this one
Thanks Matthew!
It is so great that your big project is finally done! You look so happy to be back to looking after your trees. Congratulations!
As someone that has been watching you for years now, and remembers the original repotting, I do love the flashbacks. Even though i live in a much warmer climate, I am jealous of how quickly your trees grow. Love the videos
Love the pot!
This is like seeing an old friend, x
Hi Nigel!! 👋👩🦳️👋 I have always liked this Ficus in the Vietnamese style pot. Especially with the roots draping over into the drip tray. I remember when you were first deciding whether to do that or not, and agreeing with you that that was the way to go. Very "Vietnamesey". 👍🙂🙃😉🙃🙂👍
I also like the way you trimmed it back, a much cleaner look and a great beginning palette for a low-slung wide tree.
I truly appreciate you sharing your clip and grow, root clean-up and your thoughts behind why you do what you're doing!! It really helps me in how to look at my 'trees', and deciding what to do and where.
God bless Nigel and happy holidays!! Take care.
I really like the pot!
Looks really good, I think the pots looking even better with time.
So beautiful bonsai and pot
Looks so much better after the pruning, I can now much better see the image of a low, wide spread tree!
It's slowly getting there, it will take a few years to get the primary structure set!
Awesome tree! Awesome pot!
Thanks so much 😊
I keep missing your premiers. Oh well. Having a cup of tea and enjoying it now. Great tree. Cool.
Thanks for the guidance on pruning!
That really is a nice pot. Very convincing!
Thanks Lukas, it was fun making the pots!
Yeah... Im gona have to design my own Vietnam pot. Ive started to really like the overall design of that pot style.
Overall arrangement of d pot n stand is looking great, nice plant 👌👌
Enjoying seeing these. I'm certain there are more like these that we haven't seen a lot of.
Yes, I have a lot of trees that haven't been seen in a long time!
beautiful job! that will become a wonderful tree someday! the trunk carving gave me an idea for one of my ficus ginseng. thank you.
I think it is going in the right direction, I'll keep at it!
This tree has very good growth.really beautiful.👌🌲
that's looking awesome
Thanks BEngalurU Bonsai!
Thank you Nigel for a great Video 👍very informative ❤️
Oohhh I missed this one!!
Beautiful
The carvings on the roots almost look normal now. I hope you get more time to design pots over this winter
Yes, hopefully and thanks again for the TBS stuff!
That is a neat pot! Don't think about all that other stuff yet, you'll get overwhelmed. Be safe :)
i love everything you did with the tree past to present . . .i'll wait for the time when you prune or trim those roots . . . pretty sure more lessons will come . . . tnx nigel merry Christmas!
Thanks Vic, it certainly has changed from a grocery store plant!
Very nice video, thank you.
yeah!!! another video!
You mentioned as you were first starting the prune that you were removing a lot of foliage. After that you memtion how strong the tree is. One more thing is that most of the leaves you left on were shaded by the ones you cut off. It is possible to remove as much as 80% of the foliage this way without negatively affecting the tree, in fact it helps the tree to store up sugars faster since the leaves also use food and with fewer of them, the plant needs less food to survive.
I would love to get my hands on that pot.
Thanks for the video, always such good information....
Thanks Matt, glad you liked it!
I have a sad braided ficus that I’m hoping this will help.... and I really love to carve my gensing ficus the way you have , all thing in time!!!
Back to our roots ey!!!
Yes, lol!!
Nice pruning!
I'm hoping it looks good once it starts to grow again!
@@TheBonsaiZone I am sure it will!
Found the dad of the guy who plays the punisher 🤣 jk, helpful video I needed this
I like yours ficus
Thanks Berkan!
extraordinary very riveting
Thanks Dipati Megan!
I agree with the comment below that it resembles a huge old tree growing over a temple at Angkor Wat.
Thanks Sophia, I'll keep working on the details to make it look even larger!
Just started working on a new one yesterday!
Awesome!!
Beautiful roots, bought my own today for 24$ and just repotted it as it was too dry and not great soil.
I really like this little tree:) this one is actually a tiger bark (microcarpa) . There is so much confusion between microcarpa retusa and microcarpa var tiger bark. Although grafting get be done on one another :) Here in stores, 'ginseng' are actually most of the time retusa (grey/white bark)
Hello Nigel, glad you have semi-finished the plant room and that you are back on fire, shooting bonsai videos! Could you tell me what temperature is in your plant room? At what temperature do you overwinter your tropicals?
I do envy you your summers are good so you get good growth ours are mediocre my ficus put on very little growth this year out side your winters are defined ours are just wet so you can’t do a lot
Hi nigel how is your day love your video keep up the good work
Salam master dari indonesia
I LOVE what you did to those fat roots!! I love Ficus but I do not like those roots. Now I what to do with them!! Thank you!!!
Hi Nigel -
Nice to see this tree again - the squat proportions are really coming along, especially with the aerials!
Just so you are aware, while it's true PLA is biodegradable, it is only so under very specific conditions. You can't just plant a tree in it and expect the pot to fail, for example. Same thing if you were to just toss a failed PLA print in the ground. In order to biodegrade properly, it needs to hit sustained temps of 60C or more and be exposed to composting bacteria. This is not to say that a PLA pot won't fail due to other reasons (such as extreme cold or heat) but the idea of PLA immediately being a bad material for pots due to its biodegradability is a bit of a misnomer.
FWIW, I use PLA regularly for tropicals and succulents without issue.
Thanks Florence, I find the PLA is really good for many years, but towards the 4th year it begins to crumble. I do have many of the PLA pots in the greenhouse where they see high temperatures and I'm sure it speeds up the process! The pots that I printed that haven't had a tree planted in them are still in mint condition, so as you say, it must depend on the conditions and the biological action! The PLA pots that I have outdoors on the benches do last much longer than the ones in the greenhouse, I think the cooler temperatures? Thanks Florence, it's great to hear people are using 3D printing for bonsai! I've got to get some more pots designed this winter, it's so nice being able to print your own pot!
I want that pot so bad 😂
Can you please leave a link to get those 3D printed pots? Thanks for all the great videos, and the time you put into informing us on how to grow our trees...
With Christmas coming up, is it time for an update on your pinus artificialis?
It's coming up on a year....why don't you do an update on this tree. I'd love to see what the tree looks like now and thank you for your videos from a newbie!
Check my latest video, you will see it!
Really enjoy your videos and i learn a lot from them. Thanks for sharing so much info! I have a ficus also and have kept it indoors since I got it. I didn't think it would survive the winter - I'm in Cornwall, Ontario (zone 5a). Can I leave it outside in an unheated storage tempo for the winter? Thanks!
Hi ! I'm a newcomer to this channel, I've been growing a ficus ginseng for the past summer and it's done very well ! It grew so many leaves 🍃 I'm wondering why does one prune these trees and how to do it safely so thanks for this video ! If anyone has any knowledge to share it would be much appreciated ♡
Hi nigel, just wanna ask about what kind ficus ginseng did you work on this video.
There are two ficus ginseng you can buy on local store. Ficus Ginseng grafted with smaller leaves and the other Ficus ginseng is not grafted but it has bigger leaves. Can you please tell me which one of it. Thanks and merry christmas
Thanks for showing this. I have just been bought a ficus ginseng with a thick bulbous trunk and have been looking for advice on what I can do. What time of year is it best to attempt the repotting and trunk carving?
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but my ficus ginseng’s upper part either had and infection or was rotting, so I’ve had to cut it off. Like the whole upper part after the bulbous roots. It’s still alive but I don’t know if it will recover....
The whole problem began because it had wet feet for too long
👍👍😘
Hey Nigel, heads up just in case. At 10:07 I see a web underneath the bottom right leaf. Spider mites? Might want to check it out.
Hello, i enjoyed watching the video, very informative. I have a question, I bought a Ginseng Figus from Lowe's. it was in a brokn pot so i got a half price off. When i came home I realized that it had no roots. It was infested by gnats. I threw away the soil it was in. Plant looks really healthy but has no roots. so, I have it sitting in a wter until I find some more information on how to keep it alive or what next step to take. Please let me know if anyone knows what to do. Thank you so much!
Looking forward for ur pot designs on Thingiverse
My ficus that i have kept indoor whole year kind of just stopped growing leaves, old and new just like month or two ago. I don't think nothing has changed except outdoor weather became colder and maybe indoor humidity got lower. And now past week it has started dropping them.
All leaves, old and new, are still green but they are dropping. Couple branches already without any leaves left.
Possible i over water very very free draining soil? I give it water once a week and spray it daily..
It could be a reaction to a change of conditions, I think as long as it doesn't have standing water under the pot, the roots should be OK with regular watering. Is it possible the roots got too dry?
I haven't seen you do this since the lemon tree
Root triming
🇻🇳👍
whenwill you wire this or ate you gonna vlip and grow
Hi Nigel, Im planning to start a small 25 cm high Ginsen Ficus just like this one! I was wondering if it is possible to "even out" the trunk thickness? Many of the saplings you can buy in a store have a very thick trunk with tiny sprouts at the top. In other words, is there a method to make it more "tree" looking, or do you recommend a different species which also is suited for indoor growth? Can't wait for some expert advice and get started on my first Bonsai!
Hello Erik, this tree had massive roots under it at first. I took the saw and cut 75 percent of the roots off with one cut! You can prune off the grafted branches once the tree has recovered and grow regular Ficus microcarpa branches from the root stock also. Severe operations, but they will work 90 percent of the time.
I was told not to mist the tree to avoid rott.
Hey is the Vietnamese style you are modeling this after considered a sumo style?
Good morning Nigel although it's night there
So how r u?
I have looking for this beautiful ginesang of yours
It looks so lovely💚
So my question is what's the age of this plant 🙃
Hi Nigel, how did you do it that after cutting off the original ginseng roots you’ve had no root rot? I’ve basically done the same and chopped these huge fat ginseng roots off, but now I obviously have a huge scar that is in the soil now where I’m rather worried that it’ll start rotting from the inside eventually.
If you take a cutting of this tree will it develop the same type of "ginseng" roots? I have one and would like to take cuttings, but I'm not sure if all ginseng ficus are grafted.
Nigel, been with you for several years, but I regret to say i have to unsubscribe. RUclips censorship policies are so egregious, and dangerous, I feel I must walk away. I wish you all the best with your plant room make-over, the truck, the greenhouse, and your Targa. God speed!
Ive learned ficus root almost as good as willow
How many prige Bonsai pot ?
would you mind sharing the file for that 3d printed pot?
When would be the right time do cut the roots off? Spring?
Whenever the tree is really vigorous and the conditions for recovery are good. They need a warm humid location with good light to recover, generally early summer is best!!
Hi Nigel, love the Vietnamese style pot! Do you sell them?
Sorry, I don't sell anything. I do have some pots models on Thingiverse that you can down load and print for free. I am hoping to get the Vietnam style pots and other styles posted also. Here is the link to these models....
www.thingiverse.com/tag:nigel_saunders
I have a tree that has similar leaves but I’m not sure what type it is I got it in a plant store a while ago
It is probably a Ficus, they usually sell Tiger bark Ficus in many stores.
Добрый день! Можна в сентябре обрезать верхушки?
I would quite like to have a lot of money in about 7 years so I'm going to plant a bunch of ginseng
The Ginseng that is edible is different from this tree!
@@TheBonsaiZone I thought u used plant steroids
Is the lower drip pot separate from the one above or is it attached as one somehow?
They are separate!
You're not fooling anyone Richard Gere.
Why don't u try an adenium for bonsai
Hi Nigel. I have a ginseng ficus. It’s 2 years old now so not big. But the tubers are going wrinkly like there drying up even though it has water and is not dry. How to you get the tubers to look healthy again? What am I doing wrong?
Hello Kim, it sounds like the roots have died and the tree is slowly drying up from the bottom to the top. All you can do is cut off the healthy top and place it in water and try and get it to root.
So trim all the leaves off and place it in water?
@@kimrichardson8376 Yes, cut the top off, place it in water until roots are beginning to form and then plant it in bonsai soil. Keep it well watered and hopefully it will root and grow! you can leave some of the leaves on the cutting while it is rooting in the water and place it in a good bright, warm spot.
How long will it take to develop roots Nigel?
And what kind of soil do you use?
is that all? I missed the broadcast
That was it, I'll have a lot of shorter videos coming, I have so many trees that need pruning!
I know Nigel. we will be happy to wait for all your videos! it is such a happiness to observe and learn from the master!
I'm sorry did I miss something? You cut EVERYTHING back quite short! I always find it just a little shocking initially in a Victorian maiden aunt sort of way. 😆
Foist
Nice going Bonsai High, you have entered the Foist Zone!
@@TheBonsaiZone your tree has put in lots of vigorous new growth !
Today I thought about your weeping willow project. Does that tree still exist and will there be a follow up video?
The tree kinda has the same hair at the start
