    Spoiler/ As someone who was almost a drunk driver, angry and smashed on Sailor Jerrys at noon, the end chapter really hit home. I was incredibly lucky to have someone go above and beyond to make me get out of the car -- but there is no better way to describe how many opportunities you get to make the right decision. Getting the keys, stepping outside, opening the door, releasing the break, turning the engine -- it forces you to comprehend just how many chances there were to save Jen and the man's life. Good twist or not, the game makes such an important point in this way.

      Spookfuls It was not a fucking good twist in any way but i can agree with you.

      I think the first three chapters work way better without the fourth, but I do like how everything in that fourth chapter plays out. Shit twist, and it would've been a better game if it was four unrelated stories.
      Just fucks me up how everyone around James should've said "You're way too drunk, don't do this." but even his dad said just drive slow. I mean Jen for fuck's sake had every opportunity to see this was a bad idea. Not to blame the fictional victim, but like...fuck. Everyone involved is a piece of shit.

    • @chadoftoons
      @chadoftoons 7 лет назад

      Considering that these are fictional memories of a man with fucking brain damage after driving and drunk while it happened saying "People did'nt say he should'nt have done it" is overlooking the very simple idea of him being a liar even while he is fucking dying
      You really think you could take a man at face value if he admits something like that in real life? But in fiction you get to exuse yourself as its just another twist
      Casual levels of immersion

    I think the concepts and presentation in this game are fantastic (especially an alien memory cache being inside their heart, that's fuckign rad), but the ending is definitely hit or miss. I think it's alright, but it could've used a bit more of a sci-fi twist

  • @NecromancyForKids
    @NecromancyForKids 7 лет назад +16

    Honestly, I am extremely disappointed that the ending was real. When I watched the number station part, I was thinking that the aliens were going to make him THINK he went insane and was in a facility so they could probe information out of him about what the codes he input meant, that he actually input them, and all sorts of military secret type shit. Nope. It was just straight "you insane".

    • @NecromancyForKids
      @NecromancyForKids 7 лет назад

      Also, this wasn't really a "game"... You just basically copy pasted information over and over again. There is no way to "lose". You can't even deviate slightly from what the game wants you to do in the text adventure, which... aren't text adventures supposed to be open, even if there is an eventual conclusion? In other words, this was just an "Interactive Story". Not that there is anything wrong with interactive stories.

    • @zeekawesomecus917
      @zeekawesomecus917 7 лет назад +4

      The conclusion wasn't really that you were insane the whole time, it was more that you've just been in a car crash, and the entire time you were unconscious you were hallucinating or I guess dreaming. I feel hallucinating is a better term since the real world is kind of bleeding into the dreams or stories, like for example the big machine you see while you're being operated on was the same machine you use in the alien story.
      Didn't realize the very last one was the ending, thought it was just going back to the first. But still, hallucinations caused by being unconscious and remembering everything and feeling the guilt of it all. Until he finally convinces himself to not only confess to whoever, but confess to himself.

    • @NecromancyForKids
      @NecromancyForKids 7 лет назад +2

      That confession wouldn't hold up in court, by the way. He was seemingly in a hospital or mental institute, clearly something was wrong with him, and he was seemingly being led to give a specific answer.

    I feel there's a good horror game to be made out of the format of Chapter 3, one that takes it slower, has a lot more interactivity with your cabin environment, and your colleagues over the radio (like Firewatch does), and obviously, focuses entirely on the sci-fi or supernatural (or neither) horror without any dream/coma twists. The slow oncoming of the apparent aliens reported over the radio or by noises outside was rather well done here, but of course goes nowhere because of the twist format. I was quite certain the flag positioned prominently outside the window was eventually going to be damaged or missing when the player turned back.

      "Go To" and "Look At/ Around" should be basic beans to anyone who has at least played the first screen of Zork. Like, Vinny had trouble realizing you can't "go to door" unless door is open. All it requires is a little sense and attentiveness and Vinny fails in pretty much all those aspects.

  • @FlutterBug
    @FlutterBug 7 лет назад +9

    This one makes me wanna go on a mini rant about the story because I feel they severely dropped the ball and I feel like articulating my thoughts out about it. Like, I enjoyed the first chapters of the game and I felt they laid out a rather intriguing alien invasion kind of story in a very interestingly presented way, I liked the use of looking through materials and using different devices and such while some sort of mysterious happenings were going on. Where the game failed for me was when it decided to remove all of its mystery and explain out to you all of its metaphors, because then you lose basically all of the reason you went through the rest of it for some cheap, bland twist that makes it into a regular, sad, drunk driving story. It feels like it was just wasting your time with the rest of it when it just explains exactly what happened in the last chapter to you, and then makes you painstakingly go through all of it even though you get the idea at the very start of it. For instance I thought the game Terminal 7 did the idea far better because it left some of the mystery in even at the end and lets you be free to contemplate its metaphors on your own. If you have to go through and explain all of your metaphors like that, they aren't very good metaphors. So yea, I'd liked if the accident remained more of a subtext for you to find (or not) and let us have the weird alien story too.

    • @KingThrillgore
      @KingThrillgore 7 лет назад +4

      FlutterBug in retrospect it does tie together the three previous chapters but it's too sudden and the idea that "its a bad mashup of a video nasty in a simulated reality" stands out as a rushed and tepid climax. They should have developed the last chapter more or just thrown out the DUI bit altogether.
      Even though it loses all of its steam in act 4, it's still pretty good at making you feel terrible about how Mr. Aition got to this point of his life, how he was empowered by his family, his questionable morals, and his ability to process his own grief. It's definitely a sad story, just not a great sad story.

    • @FlutterBug
      @FlutterBug 7 лет назад

      KingThrillgore yea I think this kind of story certainly has it's place and I am sure this was intended as the ending far in advance, but I just think this story would have benefited from a different presentation for sure

    Idk, I can't say I completely paid attention through 100% of the game while Vinny was playing it, but I didn't think the ending was that bad. It seemed more realistic I guess, like this whole game is just someone's experience in a car crash. The hallucinations, essentially dreaming seemingly random stories up, that were being effected by what's going on in the real world as he's being operated on. And later piecing together what effected the hallucinations and what's actually going on. The game makes you think at first that all the different stories have no connection, but then later on you kinda piece together the connections, except for the snow story... idk what that one had to do with anything.

      All In Your Head twists can work incredibly well, like in Silent Hill 2 or Sexy Brutale. It's just this one doesn't work very well because of the pretty mundane scenario that caused the All In Your Head and the fact that if it didnt have that twist it would still make perfect sense.

    • @erike5865
      @erike5865 7 лет назад +9

      I feel like "It's all in your head" is hack only if it is just used to hand wave anything that is too improbable. I feel like it works for the most part in this, because the episodes actually reflect what happened to him, such as the alien extracting himself from the wreckage and the drill being used on a live organ. But that is also why I feel the arctic episode was a missed opportunity, because it was a really cool scenario but at the end didn't really connect to anything that was real and all it boiled down to was "Your family was doing fun Sudoku with you"

  • @penquinmaster
    @penquinmaster 7 лет назад +1

    It's a shame that the last chapter ruined the theme of the game. I was hoping it concluded the alien story but instead all we got was an ending made to make us feel bad while throwing the entire alien theme out the window.

    Fun fact: I looked up the abbreviation for GCS. It stands for the "Glasgow Coma Scale" measurement system used by many healthcare professionals. I also looked it up on Acronym Finder and originally thought (like many of you) it stood for Ground Communication System, assuming that in Chapter 3, Mr. Ation was manning a fail-deadly counter-attack system.
    One of the Microfilm slides shows all the criteria used in the Glasgow Coma Scale, so right away the game is telling you what's what.

    S P O I L E R: The ending is such a let down compared to the rest of the game. In my opinion, what makes this game's story so interesting is the devs presenting the audience with a vast unknown, forcing said audience to make implications about what is happening (up until the end, of course). The ending ruins it all by having it all be explained as a cliche'd "It's not real, surprise!". Instead of having everything witnessed have nearly no meaning other than it being a dream and having it all tied into shit-encrusted bow, it would have been a much more interesting story if:
    A) All stories have NOTHING to do with each other, making them little snippets of uncanny oddities, almost like interesting little skits. OR...
    B) All stories have something similar involved within them (for example, when first watching, I predicted that the stories implied aliens and/or alternate dimensions) that all lead to a conclusion that still leaves the audience in the dark about certain things in the stories.
    Anyways, don't drink 'n' drive, kiddies! Shit's bad. Just like this game's ending.

      It would have been interesting, but would it have made sense? Would it have been fulfilling? Would it teach you anything? Those are the three things this game tries to do.
