That last game seems to have been partially inspired by a scrapped mechanic from the original Luigi's Mansion. In beta builds of the game, you would have a time limit equal to one real-world night to clear the game, otherwise Mario's soul would be trapped within the mansion as it disappears, and Luigi would seemingly fall into depression.
If I ever make a game that has tips on the loading screen, I would want there to be a small chance of a really deep quote appearing instead, but it's in a game like warioware.
You'd have a bunch of silly mini-games and spoofs of famous quotes, then after a while, you get a quote like "Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. - Norman Cousins". And then a T-Posing Archibald starts chasing you.
Horror game idea: visiting Vinny's spider/centipede room, and it's just a dark pocket dimension where a corroded V Dub is slowly coming for you, as you explore and hide you discover clues about what V Dub once was, his schüt obsessions, and how the infestation corrupted him. You are also searching for keys and lockpicks to bust out of the multiple locks Vinny put on the door
I feel that P.T was much more influential to horror gaming as what it was, a demo for the now cancelled Silent Hills, than it would if the full game ever came to be.
Lucas I can on this occasion confidently disagree, my reason is that if you go through it again and pay attention to what they do whilst keeping in mind what scares and unnerves people (i.e. being vulnerable; ambiguity; uncertainty; panic; tension; gore; threats; suspension of reality or, in this moment something has defied my understanding of the world and now just about anything can happen etc), they absolutely understood what they were doing and they were skillful and meticulous in their execution. Even the lay-out of the house is incredibly deliberate; when you open the door, you're in a long L-shaped hallway with a window at the end, facing you. You're illuminated, but outside is almost completely black, and you can't see around the corner until you're there. This is making you vulnerable, progression is gated behind a threat, and because they don't constantly scare you in a blatant way, you're uncertain of what might happen when you reach the end. When you reach the window, there's a table to the left, and another hall, with doors, to the right. In order to observe the information on the table, you have to expose your back to the hallway and stand immediately in front of the window. Then, you're forced to walk past that door to the right, and into a brightly lit, cramped room with four access points. If you're facing the desk, there's a hallway to your right, a door to your left, a main entrance door behind you (with more windows) and above you, is a large, pitch black balcony overlooking your position. If anything wants you, it's got you. Is there something outside? Is it going to come in? Is something above me? You're uncertain, you're vulnerable, you're occupied by puzzle information, all the while tension is building, and the scares are increasing in frequency and quality. You progress to the door on the left, descend, and you're back at the beginning. Reality is distorted, anything can happen now, and you're forced to walk towards the nightmare you just escaped. Hideo's strength is in the minutiae of a subject, while Deltoro has decades of monster construction and film under his belt. What's more, so long as you keep the aforementioned tenets of horror in mind during construction in mind, you can get away with surprisingly minimal work.
So what you are saying is, "PT changed the horror genre more than a first person Silent Hill sequel could have." Is that right? If so, I absolutely agree. To be honest, I feel as if Silent Hills would have been very similar to what RE7 ended up being, and while Silent Hills might have been more cinematic, it likely wouldn't have been very unique and more.
P.T. literally stands for playable teaser. Knowing Kojima and the rest of the team, the actual game would have gone well beyond the actual teaser had Konami not cancelled it.
18:00 "Yeah, that's a fear I have!" And here I was thinking he too would fear the impending nuclear apocalypse. Winds and chirps, Vinny. Tornados even.
I've been trying to pin down why i don't like vhs filters, and now i think i get it. because these games are always running at 60fps it clashes with the old school look, i think it'd be pretty effective to run at maybe 30
i didn't say anything about streams, i'm talking about the games, if you limit the fps to 30, it'd add to the theme. I mean they're already cutting back so far, just commit to it
"VHS ran at 24 FPS" Source please? As far as I know, cassettes always used the same framerate as the broadcast standards of the country they were sold in (so either 30 or 25) because CRTs could only take a signal that matched the frequency of the AC power they ran off (either 60 or 50 Hz). DVD movies can be encoded at the original 24 FPS because the players contain software that can convert from 24 to 30 on the fly.
Wow man, that September one. Throughout my entire life I've watched numerous documentaries about murderers and serial killers, read books and studies on traits of violent psychopathy, mental illness, and psychotic episodes etc; not out of any particular interest or anything, I just happen to consume a lot of media and information. My point is, murder is almost always something so boring, mundane and pathetic. The person's reasons are rarely interesting, and the whole affair usually leaves you thinkin' "what a fuckin' self absorbed and petty loser". September 1999 not only managed to capture that, but it did so without wasting time. Fantastic.
You should watch the August Underground films. They're filmed in a found footage style following a insane murderer. They where made to show how actual serial killers are. Extreme sick shit.
