  • The Disneyland skyway is one of the most iconic attractions in the parks history. Sporting one of a kind views over Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, its legend grows as an abandoned attraction that brings back nostalgic memories of a park we grew up in as children. In this episode of Fresh Baked, we'll discuss it's secrets and history, including its origins and evolution, the reasons for its closure, and where to find some artifacts of this gone, but not forgotten attraction.

    The Skyway is considered part of my childhood. I sadly was there on the Skyway’s final day of operation. I was the last person on that fateful day to ride from fantasyland to Tomorrowland. My mother & I waited until the entrance was chained off, and nobody was left in line until we got on that attraction. R.I.P. Skyway (1956-1994)😭

    The Skyway was always a "Must Ride" for me, every visit. I was there on its last running day in 1994; the cast members were telling everyone to get one last ride in before it closed forever.

    I'm 60 and I remember going through the Matterhorn (completely open interior in those days) and seeing Tinkerbell climbing the huge flights of stairs up the middle to prepare for her flight over Disneyland during the fireworks show. It was odd to me (even then, as a child) to see the steel framing sparsely wrapped in faux covering in a failed attempt to look like stone. Yet, it still didn't destroy the magic.
    As a young adult, the Skyway was the perfect place to smoke a joint, which was common at the time. It is believed by many that that was a contributing factor to it's closing.
    With the new Skyway coming to WDW, maybe Disneyland will see it's return as well. The new technology in sky trams would allow for routes that are not straight shots. For instance, a Sky Tram could take you from Star Tours in Tomorrowland and travel along the edge of the park to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge!

      Bruce Marshall I'm 52 and remember riding it as a kid too. It was also a great place for some "alone time" with that special someone. (Wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more!)

    • @MRTano512

      Bruce Marshall I too want another one and I feel there is an awesome opportunity to update Star Tours and tie in GE to Disneyland. Take the StarSpeeder 3000's underground through a tunnel! Hydraulics on a moving platform much like Indy's ride vehicle. Just imagine Star Tours actually dropping you off in GE and taking you back to Tomorrowland.
      I would use the same Star Tours stories, just change the destinations in the queue and the end of the ride video landings to go into GE or landing in Disneyland (like old Soarin'). Construction would be easy as most of it would be underground. You could bore the entry shaft for the tunnel at the end of the Star Tours queue and keep it backstage. Just pick any spot in GE to come above ground, cut an exit shaft and link the two shafts with a tunnel cut by a TBM. You can even simplify the Indy vehicle as it can be tracked probably solving the overheating issues on the hydros that Indy regularly experiences. No ice needed this time Tony Baxter! Then you can also keep it cold in the tunnel for the ride vehicles while imitating the coldness of space! I really want to be an Imagineer!!! FRESH BAKED!!!

      The Skyway was the perfect place to smoke pot, that's what we did as teenagers back when I lived in southern California and visited Disneyland regularly. Sometimes, we'd get knowing looks from the operators, but nobody ever busted us. Talk about Fresh Baked!

    • @brucemarshall5110
      @brucemarshall5110 6 лет назад +6

      thislazylife707, Yeah, it was such a short ride, you had to rush to finish the joint before it was over. There is no way Cast Members didn't smell it on us as we exited the buckets. The smile we'd get was less like "have a magical day" and more like "enjoy the buzz"!

    Great video. The Skyway was awesome. I miss it so much. By the way, the Swiss theming was part of the first refurb of Fantasyland after the Matterhorn was built. All of it took on an "Alpine Village" theming. It was VERY unsafe, frankly. Kids often rocked the buckets around or threw litter onto the public below. It was a giant hassle for Disneyland to operate. But there was nothing like flying over Tomorrowland in its heyday, going right through the Matterhorn and seeing Fantasyland from above. It was truly magical especially at night and a great way to traverse the park. Thanks for the good memories. Love Disneyland Everyday. Love Fresh Baked Everyday. FRESH BAKED!!

      Trash, spit, gum etc. I think my sister has a memory of witnessing someone getting nailed.
      Heights and falling is one of my fears. So I was always scared to get on the Buckets.

    • @jennycraigadventures3314
      @jennycraigadventures3314 6 лет назад +4

      If it were built today or had been saved, it no doubt would have the enclosed buckets like those used in modern gondolas. It's kind of ironic that they're installing a modern system at WDW for actual transportation. Of course the newer systems are much faster and have detachable buckets that slow down for boarding. My memory of riding it as a child is a little different than yours; because you could see some of the false roofs and facades from above as well as see multiple lands at once, I thought it sort of ruined the illusion of DL being huge and everything being "real". I remember going on the skyway as a kid. The best part was going through the Matterhorn and seeing the Yeti. After the closing of the ride, the two hole were still in the mountain for some time, then eventually sealed.

    This comment is close to a year late but the video didn't have one image of the Tomorrowland Skyway station as it last was. When Bob Gurr upgraded the gondolas replacing the old "bucket" design, the Tomorrowland Skyway was completely redone with stairs on the opposite side of the platform and a partially indoor boarding area. It was very nice and just standing up there gave you an amazing view of Tomorrowland. I'll bet there must be vintage video or still images of the newer Tomorrowland station somewhere that really should be part of the FRESH BAKED archive. The Skyway was not just a great ride, but it was a very effective transportation method to break passed crowds and there were FRESH breezes to catch up there on hot days. The views of Disneyland were second to none.

    • @robertholtz

      A quick Google Image search turned up this pic from the ground looking up at the station. The interior was themed with big futuristic round lights above. goo.gl/images/vh6CFU

      Joel G Oakland Zoo has theirs still too, although it's more like a ski lift chair where your feet dangle. They also added a massive gondola with 6-to-8 person enclosed buckets (similar to what WDW is installing) that takes people up a big hill to their new expansion.

    Rode the skyway several times... towards the end of the 80s you didn't even need to get in line to ride it twice in a row they would just send you back whence you came from. People used to get in trouble and kicked out of the park for spitting over the side of the cabin or rocking the cabin. The Skyway was a great way to get away from the crowds and take a load off when other rides took a much longer time to get on and it provided a unique view of the park that let you see the tops of every attraction it hovered over. This ride, the peoplemover, adventures through inner space and mission to mars were the rides of my childhood in Disneyland in the 80s that are now long gone.

    I visited Disneyland as a teen in 1966. I well remember the Skyway, it was fantastic the way it went through the Matterhorn, and I would ride it both ways! I enjoyed the slow moving experience with the view of the attractions below. I also remember the Skyway at Disneyworld fondly. The way it almost touched down at the Autopia, then made a dogleg turn to head over to the Tomorrowland station there. It was a longer ride but went right smack over 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. Fantastic experience and opportunity for great pictures too. Right the lines were huge since the capacity was so low, but nonetheless I miss both of the Skyways!

    Less thought of but equally important is the Americans with disabilities act of 1990. Both stations were not wheelchair accessible. The ride it self did not accommodate in the same manor. So when the guest jumped and the structural issues became known, it made sense to close. The Indiana Jones ride helped to divert attention.

    Heyo FreshBaked! I was at the DL parks all day yesterday, I actually ran into Sara, Christian and Ellyce in Cars Land (of course) all such wonderful people. Now it's time to catch up on my youtubes and I'm starting with this. Thanks for the awesome content, David!

    I remember the Skyway buckets when I was a kid, it was such a cool site to see. I wish they would put something like this again in the Parks, not necessarily through the Matterhorn just something like it though!

    I grew up with the Skyway operating over Disneyland, although I did not get to ride it until decades later as an adult. My wife and I rode it for the last time in 1993, a year before it was removed.
    While I found it a fun ride, it was a thematic nightmare. It ruined Disneyland's the sight-lines from the ground and from the air. From the ground you had ugly steel towers poking up from Fantasyland with bright colored plastic buckets hanging from wire, and the Matterhorn had a pair of huge gaping holes through the middle. From the ride itself you saw all of the un-themed roof tops of the park.
    I think the park looks much better without it, but I admit I really enjoyed the views from above.

    I miss this so much. Best memory being on it during the fireworks.

    Still remember the skyway and was lucky to ride it one last time, the year before it closed.

    I was 10 months old when the attraction closed so I don’t have sentimental value with it but it does fascinate me and seems cool.

    Thanks so much David! You mentioned to me this vid was coming and I'm super excited! Yes, those stairs behind the gift stand (there now) is such a relic and last remnants of the Tomorrowland Skyway station. From a young kid to an adult I climbed those stairs and the Fantasyland Chalet... These videos bring back so much of the Disneyland I grew up on and grew to as an adult. I loved seeing the inserts in todays vid as I reminisce and place myself right back in those exact same footsteps (or aerial spots) of attractions past. What do you think about doing an "Adventures Thru Inner Space" Abandoned/Refurb???? *wink wink* (same queue ramp, etc.. )

    Really informative and well done. The other benefit of the skyway was that it was transportation from one end of the park to another. Without providing a solution, Disneyland lost one of the things that made the park relaxing rather than taxing. Thanks.

    Great video! Can you do a history and secrets of Tinker Bell flight, that would be very intersting?
