+Louis Auto I've just been, and they left some lights on in the distance. Just enough so that you could make out the track, and yeah, its actually really slow and quite tamed. Completely ruined it forever! :(

What I remember as a kid when I first rode SM was the cue. You would wait in the corridors inside the building - you didn’t just walk through there like you do now. The corridors were also faintly lit and open to the ride so you could see the cars flying by and hear the ride.

Well done! The giant map of Disneyland that I got in 1970 has the Space Mountain on it, even though I can't recall but I don't think they had even started to build the structure. They really planned far out!!

space mountain is the best ride at Disneyland. I traditionally, purposely make Space Mountain the 1st ride I get on when I go to Disneyland. Thats how I kick off my day at The Magic Kingdom!

In 2011, I went to Disneyland 6 days after knee surgery! The neatest thing I encountered on Space Mountain was the Disabled/handicapped loader. We took our time getting on, then the track piece our car was on was slid into place. After the ride, they slid us back to the left for casual exiting. This track is right after the loading area, and it is fun just to see it in action. It only took an extra 10 seconds for ours to move in and out.

I used to work in Disney's advertising agency behind the park. I would enter the park on my lunch breaks to ride Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion, then pick up lunch and go back to work. I could see Tower of Terror from my window. It was the best.

This was an excellent over view of the history and creation of Space Mountain! I can remember when it first opened out here at Disneyland when I was about 9 years old. I remember the lines were sometimes three hours long! This video brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing. ;-)

Great stuff! i worked as a Sound Mechanic for several years at Disneyland, and Space Mountain was my home attraction. We all referred to the asteroid projector as the "cookie projector". One of the coolest things we did was on Grad Nights. After the students left the park we normally kept the ride running for the day shift. But after the last students rode, we would kill all special effects and ride in COMPLETE darkness. The only light was from the glow panels on the rockets reflecting on the handrails of the catwalks. Totally different ride!

  • @sneetchyone
    @sneetchyone 5 лет назад +2

omg thank you for mentioning the chocolate chip cookie! I totally remember it! we would be in line and specifically yell out "cookie" when we saw it! I wish it existed somewhere! I also have a fond memory of when they played "Higher Ground" that one year I think - it was really fun! I do miss the old soundtrack too! Cookie!!!

Loved this video. I wish you had some info about the early designs in the line que like being able to watch the rocket cars glow in the dark inside the mountain from an inside window. Also the odd blue infinity mirror effects they used to have while climbing up the top of the track. I remember weird high pitch "boing" sound effects while climbing that tunnel.

My favorite ride! I remember the ramp out front. I also remember when they first added the soundtrack. My sister was obsessed with the tv show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and thought the SM music sounded like the BVS theme song! Nowadays, I go with my hubby, but he can't ride it because of motion sickness, so I get to bypass the long line and get in the single rider line, which is usually pretty short. Great video!

  • @Kimberleg

Space Mountain has always been my favourite Disney ride, though I've only been to Disneyland Paris, where you can see the rollercoaster outside for a moment after it's 'blasted' from the 'canon', before it plunges into the darkness. The last time I went on Space Mountain in Paris it said the ride had been refurbished - the only difference I found was new decorations in the the queuing area which was now twice as long!!
Cool video bro, love the occasional laughter :)

The first time i ever went on Space Mountain (recently changed to Hyperspace mountain because of starwars) was in 2014 (because i was 11 and too afraid to go on in 2009) and it was at Halloween. It was a scary experience (for someone who never liked roller coasters up until now, at 13) but when we went back this year, I was fine and it is incredible!!

    Disneyland Paris:
The version at Disneyland Paris opened on June 1, 1995, three years after the opening of the park. It was originally called De la Terre à la Lune, and was originally designed as a view on space travel from a Jules Verne-era perspective, based on the novel From the Earth to the Moon. The track is significantly different from the other four, as it's the only one to include a launch and inversions. It underwent modifications in 2005 and became Space Mountain: Mission 2. This journey was slightly different to the first as it took riders beyond the Moon, to the very edge of our universe. Again, in 2015 the ride closed for yet another refurbishment. The ride name changed to simply 'Space Mountain'. Currently, the ride is still undergoing this refurbishment and will reopen in Summer 2015.

This is an awesome video on my favorite ride at Disneyland (and one of my favorites in the world). The trickery really is convincing, that's for sure! I do miss "classic" Disneyland (particularly Tomorrowland), and I too have fond memories of that escalator...and the Peoplemover...and of "Gantry Lifts A & B"!:(. Heck, I even recall being sad when Adventure thru Inner Space was being removed! Lastly, it still amazes me how Disney has perfected "block dispatching" on these 2 coasters (SM & the Matterhorn).

I remember when the ride was designed to be like the Disney movie "The Black Hole" when I was little. When you went up the hill, to your left was the large ship from the movie and near the end the rockets would go in a whirlpool effect to give you the feeling you were caught in the black hole. I was about 8 at the time but I still remember how fun it was. I also remember the Matterhorn was hollow inside with a mini roller coaster inside.

I clearly remember my last visit to DL as a kid, in spring 1975, walking by signs that said “future site of Space Mountain.” FF ‘til I went with a friend and we had kids of our own, in 2000. I rode it but didn’t get the fun tbh. Later my youngest made me ride it, and now she’s 19 she makes me ride first thing in the morning to this day. It’s grown on me. Morning coffee not necessary, in fact it’s best wake-up ever.

I was in that long line Memorial Day weekend in 1977. I was 11 and the line did indeed start at the ticket plaza by the stroller/wheelchair building. It look 7.5h.
It wound along the east side of Main Street and its alleys, along the Hub, back and forth several times in the Tomorrowland Mall under the Peoplemover tracks, around the base of the Space Mountain SpeedRamps, then ALL of the upper plaza area overlooking the Space Stage.
There was lots of tag-teaming for bathroom and food breaks.

I was there when Space Mountain opened and it was real fast !!!!! I remember having my head to the side throughout the ride. Later we heard that the speed was slowed down.

I was walking down Main Street as the park was closing for the night, and the projects and noises started on the mountain and it creeped me out so much.

My favorite roller coaster in the world (preferably the Disneyland version), and this video has many of the reasons why it is so. I am no stranger to very thrilling coasters and love ALL of them but none are as good as a flight through space at only 30 miles an hour.

Holy crap thanks for mentioning that space cookie in the Dick Dale version of the ride. My dad would point it out to me as a kid and I always thought he was just making shit up. Now I'll have to tell him he was right lol
