Adventure Thru Inner Space | Extinct Disneyland | Disneyland History and Secrets

- Whenever people talk about Tomorrowland, often they mention bringing back Adventure Thru Innerspace. This extinct attraction is loved by many Disneyland purists, but why is that? And if it is so beloved, why is not still here, in Tomorrowland? Why is Adventure Thru Innerspace now an extinct Disneyland attraction?

Still my favorite ride of all time. I remember as a kid looking up at the "shrunken" atommobile looking for movement from the people just to be sure. Got that uneasy feeling like it was for real. When I got a little smarter, I could tell that the car cut to the left immediately. So I felt a little better.
I totally fell for it too. I believe I was about 3 or 4 years old and remember it VIVIDLY because I so believed I was going to be shrunk just like the others. I remember seeing one of the shrunken riders pointing at something in what looked like astonishment. I still feel the hairs standing up thinking about how I felt then. Bring it back bring it back!
I remember this ride when I was a kid before it closed down. The only things I remember the most were the beginning with the omnimovers shrinking through the microscope (and I also couldn't tell if it was real or not), and the end with the giant eye looking at you. I'm glad I have a chance to experience it.
The ride itself was nice, but that line before you got on was awesome. It really blew my mind wondering how they did that shrinking people look. I could swear at the time that it was the actual folks in the ride with some bizarre mirror effect doing it. ;)
it seems like most memories of this attraction are the microscope, the eye, and the narration. The rest...was in total darkness, lol.
I do too.
I always loved this ride
Adventure Thru Inner Space was NOT a failure. It was an incredibly significant achievement that people still marvel over even decades later. I don't see the point in resurrecting it but it's really wrong to say this attraction was a failure. Not a fair statement. It was one of Tomorrowland's most successful marquee attractions and a gem of Disney's prowess. You totally overlook what an inventor and futurist Walt was and how important it was for him to develop relationships with the titans of industry.
I rode this ride so many times, what a great ride. I would love to see that return, also the People Mover and Carousel of Progress. The memories they invoke are why people so love the Monorail.
Bob S I’ve never been there when this was a thing I wasn’t born yet, (born 2005) but was it a good ride to get on when it was really hot outside (like small world) ? I’m just wondering lol
OMG! It was like seeing a bike under the tree on Christmas morning when I saw this thumbnail. Love it! The research you did on this is fantastic! I like your opinion as to why it should stay in the nostalgic past. Kind of easier to swallow that it’s gone.
things are often better remembered than relived again.
Sometimes, you just need to leave perfection alone. This was the perfect companion ride to Space Mountain....
How to make me feel old? Get me talking about Disneyland through the years. But, when I was a kid... Today when I go to Disneyland there are rides I love. Some are old, and some are new, and some just seem new because they weren’t there when I was young. Star Tours, Indiana Jones, even big thunder. They have been there forever but I still remember a time before. Adventure Through Inner Space was there when I was young. To me it was original Disneyland . Back then it was ATIS, the Mansion, and Pirates (with the Carousel of Progress and the Submarines very close behind). That’s why you went to Disneyland. Everything else was icing on the cake. But those were the big 3. What killed ATIS more than anything was Space Mountain. You have to remember this ride along with the people mover anchored the “science / future” part of Tomorrowland. Also in the mid-60s to mid 70s these were prime doobie smoking rides. Slow, Dark and Trippy.
I still think of Star Tours and Indiana Jones as NEW rides.
One of my all-time favorite rides. I miss it. So glad we have some of these old films to reminisce with. :)
They should recreate it in DCA as an Ant-Man themed attraction entering the quantum realm.
That sounds like a good idea
I was going to save the same exact thing.
No it doesnt need to be masked as another ride. it was great on its own.
Was thinking the same thing! Science and Ant-man!!
Or just in tomorrow land with no IP!
A few nods to this in the Ant-Man & the Wasp ride (likely the one Hong Kong is getting) would be appreciated. Maybe an old prop can be found, or on Hank Pym's Quantum vehicle speaker the Paul Frees narration can be heard briefly. Perhaps it could even inform the very structure of said shooter attraction.
I loved that ride. It was the first ride our family went to every visit. I agree that it probably lives better in our memories, but I would love a chance to ride it once more. Thanks
This attraction was the Star Tours of its time and deserves respect as such
My mom LOVED this ride! I will definitely show her your video! 😊
I remember this ride from when I was a kid. I remember liking it a lot, along with the people movers. I would want the people movers back before this though.
awesome....well done.....i was born in 72 and still remember this ride,
I loved the attraction when I was a kid, because, being a science-fiction fan, one of my favourite movies was "Fantastic Voyage," so this ride was for me almost like a real-life Fantastic Voyage of my own. Every time my family visited Disneyland, I must've gone on this attraction at least a dozen times...
My favorite ride when I was a teenager! I'd love to have it back!
Even though I was not born when this ride closed, I really wished I could have experienced it. They should move star tours to galaxy's edge and bring this back.
unfortunately, I don't expect either of those things to happen.
There is a video around providing a 3d simulation of the full ride. Closest thing you can get now, besides the archive footage and pictures.
This really takes me back! One of my very favorite rides as a kid. Thanks for putting this together.
It was one of my favorite rides!!!!!
I got to ride ATIS when I was about 9 (1983) then again early the year it closed when I was 11 years old (1985). And yep I remember it being very dark and scary too. I went both times with my very excited dad who helped me brave through the adventure and got me HOOKED on scifi. Star Tours however opened in my beginning teen years in 1987 and was the best thing I had ever hoped for. However, I miss the attractions from my very small childhood when Disneyland was most magical and felt real to me. And oh man Paul Frees was a GOD to me.
I loved Adventure Thru Inner Space. It inspired me and my brothers and sister to be interested in science and science fiction. Yep, a great ride.
Miracles From Molecules is one of my favorite Disneyland attraction songs. I never got a chance to ride it, but hear it regularly through an online Disney radio station and love it. I dare say it's even better than the song from Pirates.
I loved this ride but my family thought it was boring so I would go alone and meet them in the Starcade afterwards. As a small child, I totally believed that it shrunk you the first time I rode it but then the magic wore off with subsequent rides. Thanks for the videos.
This ride was the most vivid memory I have when I went to Disneyland the first time in 1977. I was only 4 at the time. But I remember the microscope scared the crap out of me. I didn't want to ride the ride. I ended up riding it and the GIANT EYE inside the ride made me scream. My mom said I was traumatized after that. Perhaps that's why this ride in particular is the one of the few rides I remember so vividly.
This ride was great on a hot summer day, a way to cool off, "AC," and take a break----just like It's A Small World..... It was great and I still miss it........
This was my favorite ride when we would go to Disneyland in the 80s.
I seen several videos on this ride. This one was the best so far. The insight at the end was spot-on.
Great video! It was one of my favorite rides growing up near Disneyland. But it had it's day. The best part about it was the air conditioning and the long ride. Great place for a quick nap on a hot day.
Well said. We don't necessarily miss that ride (although I remember riding it), but what that ride represented for Tomorrowland.
Thanks David many talk about it but nice to hear someone who cares about the park talk about it.
Thank you Ian :)
Well done. Some great pix of Walt and his team too. I haven’t seen those. And the script was one of the better and more informative and well thought out . This is the kind of production I enjoy. Thanks!
I absolutely loved that ride as a child!!!
I never got to go on Inner Space but Star Tours looks a lot more enjoyable. Even if Star Tours doesn’t really fit into Tomorrowland I love it to pieces and I don’t want it to go away.
I loved this ride I'd go on it to relax taking brake from walking all over the park
I like when you do stuff like this every once in a while...keep it up and thank you.
I remember that ominous tone and the snowflakes. Thank you for bringing that back to life. They should have saved the mural out front.
Outstanding!! Your historical episodes are the best - well researched and entertaining!! Thank you!
I don't know how you do it David, but your wealth of information about Disneyland and the way you present it seamlessly is very enjoyable. It does not cut from one scene to another like a lot of videos, keeping the viewer confused sometimes. Anyway, please keep up the good work and and keep having fun at Disneyland. Freshbaked is the only RUclips Disney channel I watch. -Cheers
Thank you very much :)
David, I'm your age and I remember this ride!!! The eyeball scared me so much and I was freaked out that we were shrunk and I thought it was real.
Oh my gosh!!!...Thank you so much for posting this!....This was my favorite ride at Disneyland ,It was so sad when they took it out and also the people mover.Disney needs to bring those rides back😊
you're welcome :)
Amazing video David, truly one of the best Disney history videos I’ve ever seen. Script, visuals, timing... it’s all perfect. I’ve never known much about this ride so it was great to learn. Thank you!
Thank you very much :)
My favorite ride as a child.
My grandfather helped build this ride years ago. Sadly, the first time I remember visiting the park was in 1987. I would have loved to have seen it. Its probably best left in the past though. Star Tours and the Star Trader are most likely there to remain since its the one place they will sell merchandise that says Star Wars. The ride will constantly be updated to fit with new characters keeping it fresh. I feel we are bound to see something similar to this in the surrounding area though.
This was my all time favorite ride. The eyeball 👁 was the creepiest thing ever.
I would look as hard as I could at the little people in the microscope trying to figure it out. ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼👍🏼
My favorite ride at Disneyland when I was a kid.
David, well done. This may be your best video.
This and the Peoplemover were my favorite rides when I was little. With as much as I love Star Tours, I was sad to see Inner Space go. It's a nice idea to bring Inner Space back, but it may be better to just leave it to our memories.
I've talked to a lot of people my age (grew up in the 70s) who have a massive fondness for this attraction. What's funny is that everyone really only remember one thing about the ride... the "mighty microscope" that "shrunk" you at the beginning. The queue line was brilliant; where you saw the giant microscope in the distance and slowly wound your way towards the machine. The "shrinking" people is an obvious effect now, but to my 6 year old mind it was incredible.
But no one ever seems to remember the actual ride itself (except for maybe the giant eyeball looking at them). Probably because it was pretty plain and boring... just a bunch of projections on a wall.
I for one would like to see a new ride incorporate the Mighty Microscope entryway, but have a much more exciting ride.
When I was seven years old I saw the Omni mover shrinking through that microscope… I threw a fit in the queue… Something my family likes to talk about today ... classic ride ... good times
My goodness David. This video was extremely well-researched and INTERESTING! I never made it to this ride (I was an 80s kid, and probably too young before it left), but wow I feel like I was almost there...! Hands down, FRESH BAKED is the best!!!
Thank you very much :)
One of my favorite rides
Outstanding work David, great info start to finish......
Excellent writing and production. An excellent video overall. Well done.
Thanks, David...that was so cool. I too, remember being freaked out when I saw everyone "shrinking down" on the ride. And as I rode it, I also remember thinking that I didn't feel any different after shrinking down myself!! Lol. I'm not sure this would be such a popular ride today, so I'm surprised so many people would want it back. Of course, if given a choice, I'm sure more people would vote to have the people mover back instead! Great video. FRESH BAKED!
no, I don't think this ride would work today either, sad to say.
: My name is Anthony. I loved this ride. Every time we went to Disneyland I rode it. My family and I have been going to Disneyland since the early 60s. LOL. My wife and I just recently purchase annual passes for Disneyland on August 1st. Of course I did not know her in the 60s. LOL. love your outlook on Disney. Maybe we might run into you one of these days on our Adventures at Disneyland.
Very well put together. I really liked the ride and remember quite well and fondly.
I do remember this ride as a kid I went on this ride the voice saying we are getting smaller and the big eyeball looking at you moving back and forth then you get to start too get bigger again . I did enjoy this ride In Tomorrowland there use to be a row of phone's with screens on them so you could see who you were taking to there where always people on them trying them out this was late 60's early 70's . now you have cell phones that can do that .
I remember riding this attraction in the late 70’s
While on ride it stopped an annoying amount of times.
One time was good enough.
Very nice Dave. One of my favorite attractions at Disneyland as a kid in the 70’s & 80’s. Tomorrowland should focus its again on the Sciences. Learning the basics would be great for everyone in the US. Would be great to make it more charming with the newer imagineers with the Disney Co. Be creative Disney! 👍🏽
I also cried when I saw that I was soon to shrink to about 10 inches in height, as I was waiting in line for Adventures thru Space. It was terrifying.
Adventures Through Inner Space scared the hell out of me when I was younger, from the queue seeing everyone getting shrunk to X creeping me out with his voice during the ride.
Paul Frees was the narrator for Adventure Thru Innerspace
I actually rode in "Adventure Through Inner Space" as a kid. :-)
Excellent work, David, as usual.
Pleaaasssseeeee do more historical videos like this !!! Great job !
This was a great video!! Thank you! This ride was so super spooky and fun.
Thank you for the history videos. I remember this ride from my childhood.
When I was a kid, I cried on this ride because I thought it was real!!
Great job Fresh Baked!!!
This is great. I remember riding this ride and enjoying it. But they have to more the bring it back.
thank.you for posting this!!!! kids need to know how awesome this ride was.
You pose the question about Innerspace's longevity in the light of it not being long-lived. As someone who went to the park starting in the 1960's, none of us expected the attractions to last more than a few years. We thought Carousel of Progress would be there for a few years, and it's replacement/upgrade to America Sings made us think all the attractions would be upgraded over time.
True. Carousel of Progress only existed at Disneyland for 8 years or so. America Sings existed for 14… so attractions were swapped out quickly back then.
I love this ridemuch it was my favorite ride in tomorrow I miss it so much I was nineteen years old when they tore it down for Star tours after all these years I still have fond memories of it I think today with computer graphics and surround sound and using Paul frees as the original narrator and use using that cool 1960s music it could still be a great attraction today
Excellent video! I barely remember the ride any more... but I do remember it...
It was a wonderful Disney history episode thank you so much for all the hard work that went into this I learned a lot
I remember that eye at the end for sure. I thought it was a cool attraction when I was a kid.
Well done Dave! Very Enjoyable.
Hey man. Great video. I rode that as a kid till I was about 12. And I always thought I was shrinking. With the imagineers skill now. Inner Space 2.0 would be amazing
Thank you David for taking me wayyyyy back to my childhood. I totally remember as well being beyond terrifying when I saw the people shrinking down in size. I would tell my Grandpa that I was scared and he would just tell me...meja it's just a ride...look at all the people that got on come off...and that would always make me feel better🤗 I miss those days at Disneyland with my TATA. But they will always remain in my heart and soul!!! Thanks again David all your information was AWESOME!!!!
This was Fantastic. My wife and I both rode this when we were very young and totally bought the shrinking and growing. Keep the videos coming and we will watch daily.
Very good and interresting. Thanks David
I was 7 years old when this attraction opened and it scared the living daylights out of me. I thought we were really shrinking!!!
Great video and homage. I remembered riding it as a kid (a long time ago). It suffered from a lack of respect from the audience. Many kids just screamed in the ride, not because it’s scary, it’s because they wanted to. It ruined the experience. It’s a ride that just disappeared like many in Epcot’s Future World. That’s why it shouldn’t be brought back. Disney lost confidence in educational attractions especially after corporate sponsorships stopped. Going back to forward looking attractions with education is just not possible. The audience isn’t there. Nostalgia can’t carry an attraction although “Adventures Thru Inside Out” might have a catchy ring.
They should recreate this. We loved it!❤️
Brilliant
This was fantastic David, thanks for sharing! I'm not sure if I'd be as excited to see this ride come back as I would to see the return of People Mover. It was a great way to tour the land, see all the sites while taking a nice break from walking around and gave a lot more life to the land IMO.
Thank you very much :)
Thank you Dave, you made me remember some good times!
Haven't seen one of these videos in a while.. lol what the hell.? On a serious note I do in some ways appreciate these videos a bit more than some others. With that, thank you for your efforts David!! Fresh Baked!!
you're welcome :)
I absolutely love these! Great job!
When I was a kid, I loved the People Mover and Inner Space. It is a shame that Tomorrow Land turned into just a Blah space. Space Mountain too and that Galaxy Ghost thing I never liked. Just needs to be re done and made "Futuristic" . FRESH BAKED!!!!
When you ran through the list of involved Imagineers and used the phrase "who's Who of Disney legends", that is exactly the feeling I had of that list.
One thing's for sure...it is unlikely, with the Monsanto GMO controversy, that Disney will allow their sponsorship with any attraction in the future...even if ATIS was to return, haha!
I think you're correct in that the ride would be subject to the guillotine of technology, if you will.
Great research with this, David....I enjoyed it.
PERFECTLY PERCEIVED. THANK YOU.
I was 11y/o when this ride came out. I loved it then and I love it now. I rode it at least 5 times on our first day. I still hope they will bring it back to Disneyland or maybe do an updated version. My current favorite ride is Space Mountain. Maybe they could do a combined ride of ATIS and SM.
That was awesome David, thank you. 🙂
Informative. Thanks for the knowledge!
I loved this ride as a kid. I remember being kind if spooked when the big eye looked at me through the microscope. Thanks for all the great information and nostalgia.
well done. I remember the ride so well.
Great video...This brings back memories from my childhood.
I just don’t see them bringing it back. I’m sure they’ll find some IP to use instead but I would LOVE IT if this came back!
no, highly doubtful this would ever return.
Well done -- brought back a lot of memories / rode it many times up to the 'end'. The ride ending definately was surreal. Unfortunately the ride became pretty laughable at the end -- Disney had basically stopped up-keep and so much was broken/falling apart AND riders were even getting out of the vehicles to pound on other 'cars' or steal things....and now Star Tours has been there longer then Inner Space. There is a way to bring back an updated 'version' -- since Star Tours will close after Galaxy's Edge opens and all the simulator machinery is probably to big/delicate to rip up and move, it probably means another type of immersive simulator ride.....which would fit perfectly into a Tron 'shrinking' theme or just go full 'very-old-school' Fantstic Voyage shrinking with the sims.
I remember the ride it scared the baaaaaaajeeeeebeeeeees out of me
