Something worth noting too: Doppelmayr, which constructed the Skyliner, acquired Von Roll and its technologies in 1996 - meaning that the Skyliner really is in many a spiritual sequel to the Skyway.
As a cableway company, Von Roll mostly built chairlifts at ski resorts. They did fairly well in North America where people still regard them fondly, but the company faltered in Europe and never built anything in Australia/NZ. With consolidation of the industry after the introduction of expensive new technology such as detachable grips on chairs and gondolas, they were unlikely to survive in an environment where there was intense competition over price and technology.
GMAMEC, the PeopleMover at the Magic Kingdom became more popular recently, and it has longer wait times, because it’s one of the few Disney rides without fast pass. It’s now currently closed for refurbishment, but it will come back as the PeopleMover.
Ya I think he should also revisit the radio shack video bc the company seems to still have locations open in small towns that don’t have huge competitors
It's amazing just how much history Disney has of cancelled and abandoned projects, and nearly bankrupt at one time, and with none of their parks opening, movies and shows on halt, delayed or simply cancelled, and many stores closed I feel there's going to be a wave of content coming from them within the next couple of years. The big parks will eventually recover as a whole, but I think individual attractions might suffer as they try to make up the lost revenue from months of not operating.
In addition to concerns about attractions, the thousands of cast members who have recently been laid off are on my mind right now as well. They parks will survive. They'll change, but survive. The people might be in trouble, though.
They hate Trump and his stupid conspiracy-minded supporters they actually love America! Resisting Trump and his supporters is the most American thing you can do! fight the anti-constitutional fascists'! Blue wave a comin!
I will never forget my father and I meeting Mr. Disney on a weekend following the first fatal accident at Disneyland back in the 1960's. We drove down to Anaheim from our home in LA, and the park was almost completely vacant that early morning. The place was next to the Matterhorn fence, and while making the turn, I remember Mr. Disney standing in the spot the poor man died after unfastening his seat belt, days before, standing up and plummeting to his death. Walt was overwhelmed with tears at the time. My father, a dentist spent the better part of an hour consoling Mr. Disney on one side of a nearby bench, while I sat on his opposite side. I remember Mr. Disney saying to my father with tears in his eyes, "Norm, this isn't what I intended. I built this place for people to bring their families and be happy." My dad responded that it wasn't his fault, and talked it through for a while. We departed and Mr. Disney returned to his home. I remember him calling my dad to thank him for his kindness and compassion. At truly decent man, I believe Walt Disney would be dismayed at what the money-grubbers did to his company and what it ultimately became. Lastly, my friend and I often walk the bayfront properties in OC's Newport Beach, where much of the Disney clan still reside. We ran into a Disney family member, all of whom have little or no contact with the company their uncle founded. Sad.
I had the same thought but then what if he leaned against the door thinking it was locked, and it just swung open? It had to be locked from the outside. At 5:19 in the vid it says he fell through the doorway!
There’s one guy on here who does stuff like that, he made it into the news after jumping off a bridge into a double stacked shipping container train and they showcased a video of him purposely dropping himself off a cliff side because he said he wanted to be a stuntman.
As a little kid I got stuck on the skyway when it broke down and left us hanging out over the submarine voyage for hours. I peed my pants because I was too embarrassed to pee over the edge into the submarine ride. I think it was around '89 or so.
I was working in Fantasyland Merchandise the day the "Janitor" fell from the gondola. He attempted to use a tree below to "soften" the fall. He forgot the "objects in motion will remain in motion" rule. He let go directly over a tree, but he continued his forward motion and hit the pavement directly. It happened immediately after "rope drop" and almost all Fantasyland Merchandise Cast members we called to form a human wall around the stricken man. He was declared deceased in route to the hospital. I was fortunate(?) and was one of a few Cast members directed to remain in a store (one per each store).
I was 3 years old and was being pushed in a stroller by my father. Apparently we were pretty close to where he fell. He nor I saw him fall but my dad remembers hearing it.
I loved taking the Skyway, especially with the views and getting around faster than walking. Nice to see the Skyliner bringing something back while making it a useful transport system, which was the original vision.
I remember in WDW my dad, brother and I would wait to board the gondolas in Fantasy Land so we could time it to see the fireworks from the gondolas. It was always amazing to see the fireworks at basically eye level from the gondolas 🎆
@@BrightSunFilms I love your videos, but come on, the title is a bit misleading. One infers the in the sky transport is no longer, but yet it had a rebirth. So, I feel this is click bait. How about Abandoned & Rebirth

@Jay Man LOL WTF? Disney is a symbol of American Imperialism and Capitalism. This is part of the reason why France hated it at first. This is why Rammstein included Mickey in their song "Amerika". Disney is exactly the opposite of Marxism, Disney thrives on Capitalism, Consumerism, Imperialism. Your comments makes ZERO sense
Born in the 70's and visiting Disneyland many times, I am SO grateful that I got to ride this Skyway multiple times- I loved it- the open air cabins. Seeing this was very sweet and nostalgic for me. Thank you!
I was 5 or 6 years old the first time I went to Disneyland, and I told my mom that I wanted to go on the Skyway. She said it wouldn't be a fun ride and that we didn't have time. Thanks, Mom.
Nice video! I was at Disney World summer 2019 before Skyliner opened, all the cars were just frozen in place hanging on the wire. It was very hot and our first thought was 'will those have air conditioning?' but from this video looks like they will at least have windows. ....can't hear someone talk about Euro Disneyland without thinking of "Euro Itchy and Scratchy land" from the Simpsons:)
I remember filling my Pamper with diarrhea while riding the skyway in Disney Land back in 1971 then having to wear it for 3 hours because my mom left the diapers in the car.
Abandoned things and Disney: 🤝 I'm glad the concept was revived as the Disney Skyliner. The Skyliner is a convenient system. It adds one more transportation option for guests at the parks and resorts
Your phrasing and delivery is literally so powerful. I was beyond moved, actually to slight tears, by this retelling of the Skyway's history and the future it lead to with the Skyliner. Incredible video as always.
Great video. I agree definitely the successor to the original and while the Skyway is gone they brought Disney’s dream back to life again. If you will.
This is the perfect video while laying in this sh*tty bed after having a piece of my colon removed today. Now I have something to distract me for a few from all the noise of hustle and bustle, and all the A'holes around me who won't give any peace to someone who wants rest. Plus it's the best channel and also a video based on one of my most cherished memories of a ride as when young lol
Just tell the nurses not to come in until it’s time to get vitals. If you’re nice about it, they might try to time your meds with your vitals so they don’t disturb you as often. At least that’s how we did it at my hospital.
There is a vintage Von Roll Sky Ride still in operation at Cedar Point in Ohio. It’s one of the park’s highest-capacity rides; people definitely use it for transporation.
In the early 60's Seattle hosted the world's fair. At the world fair they had a skyride that was just like the one at Disneyland. The skyride from that world's fair still exists. It was moved to the Western Washington Fair Grounds and is still in operation. (Well it would have been in operation this year if it wasn't for the global pandemic.)
Seattle Center is where the old World's Fair was held. They used to have a big display in the Center House that explained the history of the area. The display also mentioned that the Pacific Science Center, Monorail and the Space Needle were all originally created for that World's Fair. My Mom told me that Elvis Presley shot a movie at the Seattle World's Fair. I guess you can see the skyride in the background. I'll be honest I've never watched that movie myself. My Mom is a Elvis fan and shared it with me.
I remember going to the Wash. State fair in Puyallup, Wa back in the 80s, and they had sky cars. It was so cool riding on them. Too bad that Disney closed all their sky cars.
My dad retired from the SoCal Park after over 30 years there. Needless to say my childhood was filled with frequent trips for almost every year till my mid twenties. So many attractions gone but the skyways and the submarines will always be my favorites, outside the coasters and dark rides (I think the subs fall under the dark ride classification).
I wouldn't be surprised if there is an additional reason as to why they were removed. Aside from the supports in the Matterhorn breaking apart and literally removing the whole external superstructure to repair the supports. The other issue is non compliance to the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA. The newer transport system at Disney World, follows those guidelines. Whereas the older ride was designed in an era without ADA guidelines. If you look at the rides, all of the stations are built on a hill or employ stairs to get to the attraction (using the height to lift guests up above the crowd faster), the gondolas are very small where weight could be an issue (Americans are fatter now), and very limited space for a wheel chair. In a sense and a time where Disney didn't have the financial position, it makes sense to abandon the ride instead refurbish them. However, the lack of the ride being in place puts a HUGE pressure on the railroad to move guests around the park. You either have to walk from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland or you have the ride the railroad around the entire park just to get to the previous station.
Everything you have said is quite true. The Skyway did not meet the ADA standards, and unfortunately could not be updated to meet those requirements. However, with the success of the new Disney Skyliner, I would not be surprised to see a new Disney Skyway make a comeback. Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group, the successor to VonRoll Ropeways, has been quite successful in not only installing new systems across the country, but in updating classic VonRoll control and drive systems. The old VonRoll systems were quite labor intensive, requiring people for catching, loading, and dispatching the gondolas. The newer Doppelmayr systems are all automatic - the cars come in, the doors open, people get off, new riders get on, doors close, and car is dispatched - all while the car is slowly moving through the station. It is amazing at how quickly the new cars can be loaded and dispatched, as opposed to the old VonRoll cabins. I would love to see Disney bring back the Skyway to their parks, only in a modern, updated ride system. I love the VonRoll rides, but we have to allow for progress to really move us forward - no pun intended!
@Granpda Corey The American's with Disabilities Act was signed by a Republican in 1990 by George H W Bush, not Bill Clinton. His son George W Bush amended the law in 2008 to provide new and updated rules and laws. The ADA's most obvious thing they do is yes sideways/parking stalls, etc... BUT The law also covers other things as well. It governs employers by providing equal access to employment even though the person maybe disabled. It prevents employers from laying off or firing an employee due to a permanent life altering injury that may have been sustained at work (prior to the law if you got hurt on the job you got fired). The ADA laws also govern building codes and providing easy access for those with disabilities. In regards to Disney and the old gondolas the system most likely would not be allowed to function under the ADA codes. This is why you see a drastic difference between the old Sky Way ride and the new Gondola transportation system that Disney uses at Disney World.
@Granpda Corey Hate to tell you this Grandpa Corey, but the Americans with Disabilities Act covers far more than sidewalks and crosswalks. It would indeed cover the gondolas for the sky ride. Disney is required by law to make "reasonable accommodation" for their disabled guests. Exactly what that is would be determined. If you notice, the newer sky rides have gondolas with wide doors for boarding access, as well as accessible boarding platforms. The existing VonRoll 101 sky rides that are still in operation have been "grandfathered" as existing before the ADA went into effect. Working in Human Resources I am all too aware of the broad ranging implications of the ADA, which provides for equal access for everyone.
Cool to see my footage of the Disney Skyliner construction in this video. It was so much fun following the progress for 2 years. Always enjoy your videos, keep up the great work!
Disney: Ight we need to figure out how to repurpose the skyway station. Random worker at Disney: Let's make Tangled themed bathrooms. Disney: That's a genius idea!
I really miss both the Skyway and People Mover at Disneyland. I was 8/9 years old when both attractions closed in 1994/1995. I remember being in awe as a kid when I looked up and saw the Skyway going through Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. My mom said that we went on it before when I was younger, however, I just don’t remember being on the ride itself. But I do remember riding the People Mover though. I’m glad I do have the memory of viewing the Skyway from the ground.
I remember riding the Disneyworld skyway in the 70's twice and once in the 80's. Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio had one for a while as well that I rode.
Somehow, someway, i still find bright sun films underrated, so many people i show these videos too never knew these types of things were covered by anyone, love this
This was a great watch! The only gripe I have about the Disney Skyliner though is the multiple incidents where passengers have been left stranded in the air for sometimes hours at a time, waiting for rescue.
Jake, it's always a treat to find a new BSF: Abandoned video in the line-up. I didn't actually remember the Skyway rides until I saw this and now I can see how really interesting they were. I particularly liked the Alpine look of the Florida Skyway station. I've revisited several of your past videos, since I love abandoned explorations that're well done. There are so many "Semi-posterior Explorers"---if you catch my meaning---on RUclips who can't seem to be bothered with researching their videos, sometimes even adding their own BS to the narrative, and even adding the word "Haunted!" or "Scary" to the description... Thanks. Stay safe, everyone.
When I was a kid we had a official Disney parade VHS and I remember seeing the skyway buckets which didn’t exist anymore on my first trip in 97. I was told that the ride was a privacy problem which makes sense too because in the 90s, the company was ultra secretive, PC and a bit bland.
The Sky Ride at Cedar Point also has an abandoned section. There was a second Skyride that took guests from the midway back to Frontier Town. It was removed in 1985. One of the stations is still in use for restrooms near the Cedar Creek Mine Ride. The other station was torn down to make way for the Iron Dragon. I remember riding that section of the Skyride as a kid because it went through the woods.
I had to double take the upload date, because I thought it was an old video at first lol Glad you redid the video, didn't realize how much more there was lol 🤘
I rode the Disneyland skyway for the first time in December 1985. I remember the view down to the submarines and going through the matterhorn. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Sending lots of positive vibes and well wishes xo
The Tokyo Tomorrowland Skyway station is actually still fully intact. Its currently being used as a "show lottery" distribution location for priority seating (it works similar to FastPass, except only a select number of guests are randomly chosen to receive the ticket).
it was a shit ride anyhow.. since it not high enough to see anythin and it go no where... while disneysea still had train and boat ride so you don't had to walk to get to another park...
You should make a video on “The Eyesore on I-4” its not exactly abandoned but its not exactly in use. It’s constantly just being added onto and being built taller by its owner, then he goes bankrupt, then he gets more money, then he builds till he is bankrupt. At least thats story some friends told me. Its near Orlando, Flordia
Thankfully in Florida we still have a skyway in the form of the Busch Gardens Tampa Skyride. Unfortunately it's been closed mainly due to difficulties to keep it sanitary for COVID, but they aren't going to be getting rid of it anytime soon, it's still a very popular ride to get from one half of the park to the other, here's hoping it reopens in the future.
I’m surprised Jake didn’t mention the Tomorrowland end of the Disneyland Skyway. They blocked off the enter/exit portals with simple painted wooden walls at first, then more permanently stuccoed walls as it made for a great storage room. Since it also housed the tunnel the train passed through and was attached to Carousel of Progress/America Sings/Innoventions, simply walling it up and turning it into a storage room made the most sense.
I never knew Disneyland was actually the first park to have this type of attraction! The one I'm most familiar with is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Sky Glider. You get great views of the ocean from it, but the ride vehicle is built like a seat so your feet are hanging down and the lap bar isn't very impressive, giving you the feeling that you're about to fall at any minute, while the whole ride vehicle appears to be just loosely attached to the wire. Genuinely one of the scariest rides at the Boardwalk, I love it.
The Skyway was chaos in the 90s. I remember security at the end pulling kids out that threw stuff and people getting it on while riding. Skyway and People Mover were so fun in those days.
In the area where I grew up, there were several amusement parks (at least five that I remember) that had these type of skyway rides. They were always fun to ride, but everyone of them are gone now. A couple because the parks are no longer around, but the others were just removed from the sites. They all seemed to disappear at about the same time, which makes me wonder if the death of the Disney maintenance worker had some ripple effect throughout the industry. I miss those rides...just another part of my childhood that's now just a memory.
Went on the new Skyliner in March 2020 and it was awesome! I didn’t know it was so new but that makes sense now that I think of how clean everything was haha I stayed at Pop Century Resort and it was a really cool way to get to Hollywood Studios, and was so fast!!
I rode the WDW Skyway in 90s. I think another issue adding to its demise was sporadic closures due to threat of lightning. We get almost daily potential for sudden thunderstorms in spring & summer in central FL - coinciding with WDW's high volume period. I imagine that limited ride capacity & disgruntled guests with shut downs (especially after waiting in a long line to ride) just added to the problems. Having ridden both, the Skyliner is a much superior, practical, & greatly longer ride.
I still miss that ‘nice little sit down ride’ as my late nan put it. They did have one of the old gondolas was in a shop in Disney Springs, or at least a replica, last time I was there.
The gondola ride has always been one of my favorite attractions. Despite living in Florida my whole life, I'd never been to Disney World until around 2013 when I was 19 years old, so I never rode the Disney sky ride. Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL however has a system dating to the same era which is still in operation, I'm not positive but considering the age of the equipment it too is likely a VonRol system. I have fond many fond memories of tossing coins off of it with my best friend Mike, and escaping the parents to make out with girlfriends.
I remember seeing the old Fantasy Land station in Disney World, and asking my dad about it because I didn't know what it was. He told me about it and I thought it was so cool. I think it's great that they brought it back in a new form.
Let me start by saying that I always love the facts in your videos. The Skyway only suffered short term closures during the construction of the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn was inspired during the same trip and Walt Disney began to think about placing the Matterhorn in Fantasyland during 1956. It didn't enter full planning for Disneyland until 1957, but the primary reason Walt chose the Skyway was so that the main tower could be easily dismantled and the fide could be rerouted onto a temporary route during the Fantasyland/Tomorrowland expansion of 1957-1959. The Skyway was rerouted to go over the Autopian and pass to the north of the Matterhorn construction site until the rock work could be completed half way down the Matterhorn. I've seen Tony Baxter show film footage of this at the D23 Exposition.
I miss this ride so much. Look closely at my profile picture. A photo op backstage at Disneyland sitting in one of the ride buckets. Great video love this channel!
I rode the new skyliner in Disney World. I took the routes from Rivera Resort to the parks. I liked it, it’s insanely efficient and fast. Seems safe and was one of my favorite things!
I remember the Skyway at Disneyland - it was a great way to get from one side of the park to another, and the view inside the Matterhorn was unique! The last time I was at Disneyland in the mid 2000's I visited the Fantasyland station; it's a little sad knowing it's no longer there.
I remember Walt Disney World's "Skyride" as my family called it, it's one of my most vivid memories from back then. We missed the opening of the new Skyliner by a month.
Do more abandoned videos like this and all the videos you do, I love watching them, just takes a long time till I see you have put up a new one, love your videos and detailed research you do ( that's the best part, detailed pictures and videos and information) thank you cant wait for the next one
That’s interesting. I always thought the dland version was taken down because the fire department had to do too many high winds rescues. But that seems like it would have been even more likely to happen to the Wdw version.
The last time I was at Disneyland, back in 2005, the Fantasyland station was full of feral cats, fed by the park so, the story goes, to keep down the rats and mice.
Unrelated to the skyway, I've been to Disney land Paris back in 2008 and I just remember walking around the park trying out rides for 3 days straight and I was impressed at how well put together and how much little detail is put into a park of its size. But when I see videos like these and I see images of how much bigger the Florida resort is from a birds eye view I really struggle to comprehend the shear magnitude of Walt Disney World. Just knowing that it has that same level of detail put into it that Disney land Paris has, I just really can't fathom how overwhelming a place like that could be. So it's absolutely understandable why Disney world has such an enriched history of cancelled and abandoned rides or buildings. It's something so big that you wouldn't be able to do everything in a weekend, and for a lot of people, too costly to stay a full week. So they'll just do the main attractions, leaving out the smaller ones that still cost millions to develop and run, so they cut their losses and abandon them.
You forgot to mention the two gondola incidents that have already occurred (which I happened to be there for both coincidentally!). Hopefully the issues that have already come up so early will be fixed ASAP. I was SO lucky to get off one of my gondolas RIGHT before the first crash and I watched people stuck in the sky for HOURS. It was honestly traumatic for me I can't imagine being stuck in one of those. Love your videos! Thanks for the awesome content.
I miss the Skyliners. I wish there were more ways to get around the park to alleviate congestion. I understand there will be crowds at theme parks but it’s gotten more difficult to maneuver the parks
So episodes like these are kind of reminding me of something like reboots but there amazing! It's way more information than the original and shows how far Jake has come from the original video! 😁 I really hope we get more videos like this because it's really awesome to go back and see Bright sun film history haha
This might be my favorite episode, given that full circle back to hope and innovation! Definitely something uplifting that brightened my day. 😊. Thank you for all of your videos! (And, as a complete 180, I hope that Closed for the Storm is able to release soon!)
A wonderful look at these attractions, even if I never got a chance to visit while they were running! And 2:41 -- Looks like the Minnesota State Fair's Skyride! It is definitely a Von Roll system of similar design to the Disney ones.
Hey jake I been watching this channel since ep12 then I got hooked on it I hope you doing well during this time of despair and keeping on doing the work
Having ridden the Disneyland in California version many times. I can honestly say, it was also the fastest way to cross the park. Especially when there was a parade starting.
What these videos (revisits) so for me is they make me go search your back catalog for the first videos in the series. I like chronology. Good job getting way more watch time out of me than 13:14 minutes.
yes! i loved these as a kid, they were kinda old/underrated by my time though. also i never heard skyway in my life, except for the bridge-- we always called them skybuckets or the bucket ride. my brother got spit on from one as a surly teen the last time we were all at WDW together and he bitched about his new hoodie being ruined the rest f the day. tbh i rode the ones at busch gardens a lot more than the disney ones; i wonder if theirs are still up? been like 20y since i went to either park. thank you for the video on them! i had no idea the history was so technical or that there was a new one at WDW.
my favourite type of abandoned buildings are the ones that have an air of grandness (is that a word?) about them, like they're basically a monument to what they once were and from the outside at least, still look like they're in pretty good shape. the tomorrowland and fantasyland stations looked exactly like that, and damn i wish i knew about them so i could go check them out when i first went to magic kingdom 15 years ago!!
Loved this video. I grew up 20 minutes from Hersheypark, PA. They also had a skyway, but it too had been taken down except for the first entry way when you first come into the park. I believe that empty box is still there to this day. Hersheypark is land-locked and so their new rides every year either have to replace older ones or intertwine like the roller coasters. Fun park, but it has gotten very expensive for a family to enjoy. Thanks for this video!!
I remember riding the one in Disney World as a kid. Not many parks have these left, but Cedar Point still has one of the two left operating, which is pretty cool. Just wish they would have kept the double ferris wheel up front, because those are basically gone altogether as well.
As the monorail evolved from a unique ride / transport system, to an overcrowded bus on a beam, I am looking forward to seeing how the new Skyliners feel on my next trip- once covid isn't running unchecked in this country.
Something worth noting too: Doppelmayr, which constructed the Skyliner, acquired Von Roll and its technologies in 1996 - meaning that the Skyliner really is in many a spiritual sequel to the Skyway.
Wasn't expecting to see Silv here
As a cableway company, Von Roll mostly built chairlifts at ski resorts. Interesting...I wonder if they’ll update Tomorrowland’s “PeopleMover” . It’s one of the few rides that doesn’t have a long wait time.
GMAMEC, the PeopleMover at the Magic Kingdom became more popular recently, and it has longer wait times, because it’s one of the few Disney rides without fast pass. It’s now currently closed for refurbishment, but it will come back as the PeopleMover.
Dave Sisson They built a few detachables. Gore mountain had a vonroll detachable triple which I thought was odd.
Abandoned & Disney?! Count me in!
Seriously I love Disney history
x2
@Jay Man Giant multinational corporation... Marxist. Yes.
Cody Panton don’t even bother trying to explain how contradictory their statement is 😂😂
Disney River Country is my fave abandoned Disney 😁
I really like this style of re-visiting older videos and adding on to the story. Well done!
YES I AGREE!
Yeah half of the old videos were filled with uhhh and Um lol
@@jlrvintagevinyl3552 Granted, though it is absolutely part of the charm.
Ya I think he should also revisit the radio shack video bc the company seems to still have locations open in small towns that don’t have huge competitors
@@quantumstudios7944 yeah in a town 5 minutes away from me there's a small RadioShack.
They're selling out to China
In addition to concerns about attractions, the thousands of cast members who have recently been laid off are on my mind right now as well. They parks will survive. They'll change, but survive. The people might be in trouble, though.
@Jay Man that's all fine and well until someone poops on a bathroom floor and no cast member is there to clean it up.
nothing new there
They hate Trump and his stupid conspiracy-minded supporters they actually love America!
Sad.
Imagine being the dude who just straight up decided to jump out of a freaking gondola into a tree
I had the same thought but then what if he leaned against the door thinking it was locked, and it just swung open? It had to be locked from the outside. At 5:19 in the vid it says he fell through the doorway!
@@TheFrostygirl but he admitted to jumping out

Alcohol gets the blame for a lot of stuff it doesn’t do........
There’s one guy on here who does stuff like that, he made it into the news after jumping off a bridge into a double stacked shipping container train and they showcased a video of him purposely dropping himself off a cliff side because he said he wanted to be a stuntman.
OMG I JUST GOT FEATURED!!! ITS BEEN MY DREAM TO APPEAR IN THE SHOUTOUT SECTION THANK YOU SO MUCH BSF!!
As a little kid I got stuck on the skyway when it broke down and left us hanging out over the submarine voyage for hours. I peed my pants because I was too embarrassed to pee over the edge into the submarine ride. I think it was around '89 or so.
Did you get any compensation from Disney?
Should've done a dive into the water below
oh well.. it not like it around anymore...
30 years later and that just happened to the Skyliner this year
I would've just pissed on the subs, like they would notice
Disneyland is now as old as Walt Disney was when he died, 65 years. They only overlapped by 10 years, from 1955 to 1966.
@Jay Man Your comment hurts my brain.
Cyrus Cuckler Same man same.
He should have just jumped the 10 feet.
@Eugene Cam and then wait until he’s out of the park to call him dead
Holy shit 😀😶
I was 3 years old and was being pushed in a stroller by my father. Apparently we were pretty close to where he fell. He nor I saw him fall but my dad remembers hearing it.
How devastating.

Thank you!
Sad to think i will never experience any of this stuff, disney made some amazing things back in the day hope they bring stuff back in future

Abandoned things and Disney: 🤝
I'm glad the concept was revived as the Disney Skyliner.
Me: watches video about Disney’s abandoned structures because it’s interesting
Disney: this seems like the perfect video for our ads
Great video. I agree definitely the successor to the original and while the Skyway is gone they brought Disney’s dream back to life again. If you will.
This is the perfect video while laying in this sh*tty bed after having a piece of my colon removed today. Now I have something to distract me for a few from all the noise of hustle and bustle, and all the A'holes around me who won't give any peace to someone who wants rest. Plus it's the best channel and also a video based on one of my most cherished memories of a ride as when young lol

Plandemic.
Oh my gosh! I live just 40 minutes from Puyallup, where that fairgrounds is located. I never knew that! Awesome 😎
I live in puyallup and go to the fair every year and this entire video I kept saying it’s like the one at the fair so cool
I have such an obsession with historic Disney rides and attractions.
I'm surprised they haven't thrown dining areas into these empty places, at least in Disneyland. It would give diners amazing views of the park.
I have great. memories of Cedar point, it’s rollercoasters and skyway ride.
Just when you forget how much you used to love this channel, he uploads another video to remind you :)
I remember riding the skyway in Disney World Orlando as a child with my aunt in the early 1990s. It was actually pretty fun!
I can see where Cedar Point got the idea for their skyway ride.
Seriously, you've never been skiing?
@@MrJakson112 They're kind of right though - Jake shows in the video that CP's Sky Ride was also made by Von Roll
I had to double take the upload date, because I thought it was an old video at first lol
Glad you redid the video, didn't realize how much more there was lol 🤘
That's really cool that Disney reimagined the Skyway into the Skyliner. I wish they'd do that with their other attractions.
I think this was probably one of your best episodes. Unfortunately, I had somehow skipped over this one, and I'm glad I went back to watch it.
Glad you liked it!
Same at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, alebit that park is closed currently due to COVID restrictions
The new Disney Skyliner in Florida is just such a nice experience, I’ve done it a few times, and if you go to Disney World, definitely check it out
The Skyway was chaos in the 90s. I remember security at the end pulling kids out that threw stuff and people getting it on while riding. Skyway and People Mover were so fun in those days.
Another brilliant video. Why this channel doesn't have 10 million subs is beyond me. Well done!
Me and my brother got sent to Disney "jail" for setting off fireworks from the sky chair hahaha
Legends
In the area where I grew up, there were several amusement parks (at least five that I remember) that had these type of skyway rides. They were always fun to ride, but everyone of them are gone now. A couple because the parks are no longer around, but the others were just removed from the sites. They all seemed to disappear at about the same time, which makes me wonder if the death of the Disney maintenance worker had some ripple effect throughout the industry. I miss those rides...just another part of my childhood that's now just a memory.
Went on the new Skyliner in March 2020 and it was awesome! I didn’t know it was so new but that makes sense now that I think of how clean everything was haha
I stayed at Pop Century Resort and it was a really cool way to get to Hollywood Studios, and was so fast!!
Even ski resorts replace their lifts when they age.
I remember riding the sky rides in Opryland and Six Flags Over GA as a kid. They were pretty great at the time.
I rode the new skyliner in Disney World. I took the routes from Rivera Resort to the parks. I liked it, it’s insanely efficient and fast. Seems safe and was one of my favorite things!
My first visit to Disney World was in 1973 when I was 11 years old. I remember riding on the Skyway and I loved it!
I remember the Skyway at Disneyland - it was a great way to get from one side of the park to another, and the view inside the Matterhorn was unique! The last time I was at Disneyland in the mid 2000's I visited the Fantasyland station; it's a little sad knowing it's no longer there.
10:34 That is perfect. Two long gone simple but awesome attractions in one picture.
I’ve seen the original skyway video on this channel, and I’m glad see an updated version of that video.
We really enjoyed your research into this. The history behind the Disney Skyway has always interested us. Thank You.
Thanks for watching!
Hey jake I been watching this channel since ep12 then I got hooked on it I hope you doing well during this time of despair and keeping on doing the work
Almost at 1 Million subs now! Wow well done. Another great production and another step on the way, good luck, well deserved Jake. 😎
Almost! Thanks :)
@@BrightSunFilms Soon fella, soon. Then onward from there. Best of luck.
I love how the skyway/skyliner gives the parks so much kinetic energy
yes! i loved these as a kid, they were kinda old/underrated by my time though. also i never heard skyway in my life, except for the bridge-- we always called them skybuckets or the bucket ride. my brother got spit on from one as a surly teen the last time we were all at WDW together and he bitched about his new hoodie being ruined the rest f the day.
tbh i rode the ones at busch gardens a lot more than the disney ones; i wonder if theirs are still up? been like 20y since i went to either park. thank you for the video on them! i had no idea the history was so technical or that there was a new one at WDW.
my favourite type of abandoned buildings are the ones that have an air of grandness (is that a word?) about them, like they're basically a monument to what they once were and from the outside at least, still look like they're in pretty good shape. the tomorrowland and fantasyland stations looked exactly like that, and damn i wish i knew about them so i could go check them out when i first went to magic kingdom 15 years ago!!
That last line... "perhaps the skyway idea was never really abandoned."
*chefs kiss* Such a lovely full-circle ending!
Great video, Jake! I remember riding the Skyway and how much I enjoyed it as a small child. It's actually the only thing I remember of Disneyland.
Having rode the 'skyfari' at the San Diego Zoo, it's both fun and semi-terrifying for somebody afraid of heights.
Just wish they would have kept the double ferris wheel up front, because those are basically gone altogether as well.
the sun always seems brighter when you upload. :)
As the monorail evolved from a unique ride / transport system, to an overcrowded bus on a beam, I am looking forward to seeing how the new Skyliners feel on my next trip- once covid isn't running unchecked in this country.
Very interesting about the history of the skyride. You should do an abandoned video about the monorail at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay.
I miss skyway at Disneyland, as a kid, it was one of my favorite "rides". 😀
For a second I thought you switched the thumbnail to the old video, but then I realized its a remake :)
Yay early :D time to slip into bed and grab some popcorn
