  • This episode is very special in many ways that I’d rather not spoil in this description. It’s worth the watch on many levels. A spontaneous episode filmed immediately after arriving from a long drive back from work, turned out to be a surprisingly great video filled with lots of orchid education and sentiment. I finally get to repot 2 giants like my giant Phalaeonopsis and bat flower plant. Easy steps in transferring them into bigger pots. Plus bonus blooper ending. #orchids #orchidcare #plantlover #phalaenopsis #batflowerplant #blooms #orchid #orchidculture #planteducation

    Nelson, please dont worry about the dog barking! i think it just adds to the experience. Its like visiting with a friend and us discussing plants in their backyard. The authentic experience is so much better than some fancy sterile indoor shoot. :)

    Couple of things - concerning the loss of a pet, I had to euthanize my rescue dog about a month ago. She was my constant companion and her loss affected me more than anything I had previously experienced. The grieving is ok, it's a part of healing. One a different note, I've done what you did with that phal on numerous other plants, only I've taken it one step further. Because the roots were so entangled in the pot, I would just place the plant, pot and all, into another larger pot. No issues at all. They just keep on growing with zero setback. Now for the Bat Plant - I had a beautiful one - once, till my parrot developed a fondness for the plant. He ate it right down to the soil! Aughhh..... Stay well.....

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  Месяц назад

      I’m so sorry to hear of you loss. Euthanizing I believe is the worse trauma for the pet owner. But it is possibly the most humane way to depart from your fur baby. When they are suffering is always best to let go. That’s why I had to make that choice with mine.
      Putting a full pot inside a bigger pot is perfectly okay. I’ve spoken to some very high ranking orchid growers in the industry and they do the same. I believe some orchid people believe that orchids need to be scrutinized over and over. When I stopped over-caring and overprotective with them, I noticed a huge improvement in my collection.

    I had 3 dogs, 2 Schnauzers and a Yorkie who were close in age, and my son had two Chihuahuas (my grandpuppies Ike and Tina) which were about the same age as my dogs. They all died within months of each other. I have been dogless since. I retired in February and we’ve been so busy since with a long vacation, buying a house in Florida, and selling a house in Oklahoma. We just spent the last month preparing for and having a living estate sale, and we move to Florida in July. After we get settled there, I am going to get a dog. I feel like I have a hole in my heart that needs a dog to heal it.

We lost our great Dane last year and our house still misses his presence 😢 💔 they become your children. And yes we will see them again . When Gustav past away I had severe depression then my oncologist suggested starting a you tube channel for my orchids...in a way it did help a bit but truth be told you never get over loosing a child...weather it has fur or not. Our dogs are our everything and super spoiled 💕. Anyway, I don't want to make us both sad. Just wanted to say I love your channel, and I sympathize with you and your friend.💐🌸

    My mom put a can or plastic bottle/cup in the middle of the pot so the roots isn’t going to be compacted in the middle and you need only take out the bottle to change the moss when repotting. She also fill the bottle with sand for anchoring (unless you’re going to hang them). Japanese growers have special pots that have hollow middle too for easy repotting and prevent root rot.

    I think that's the largest phal I've ever seen. When I have to remove moss, I use tweezers, but it takes a long time.
    I finally have my newly repotted cattleyas in an outdoor porch with windows. The humidity has been pretty high recently in CT so I'm hoping it will help with new root growth.
    My Mom's toy poodle suddenly died about a month after her first surgery for teeth removal but she was 13 years old. That was at the beginning of the pandemic which was already a miserable time. My Mom had to get another one soon after and I think it helped all of us heal.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you. Yea this phal has surprised me in growth. I’m in a conundrum because I hear that removing the medium from an old orchid causes more damage. While others say that the old medium rots the roots. Here is where my logic questions. I’ve been to professional growers homes who have had their orchids in the same pot and medium for up to 30 years. I see nothing wrong with the orchids. So why do we need to remove the medium? Still not making too much sense. Old school growers that I’ve met don’t believe in tampering with the roots because they feel that’s not a natural happening in nature.

    I wasn’t prepared to start balling at an orchid repot. I lost my fur baby about a year ago (next week will mark an official year). I understand what you mean about PTSD. I got her when I was in my early twenties and she was my one constant in all of the different life changes I went through over the years. She lived a long life and in her old age she got kidney diease (stage 3 by the time we found out). She went downhill so quickly, and my husband and I did everything in our power to keep her around. It was so traumatizing seeing/experience her last few days. I still think about and miss her everyday. I’m sorry for your friend’s lost and what you went through. Subscriber said to come and see this amazingly Large Orchid "congratulations" it is huge. Here it gets Hot like you in Florida, In the interior of BC Very hot and 20% humidity most of the time. Not enough so always looking for different ideas and of coarse fun, thanks, wish I could edit like you cause just did a video and no voice came LOL so that will be educational and fun but will put it up Thanks for your video Love Carolyn

      Glad you are enjoying the videos. You are correct on the humidity, it’s way too low for that heat. You could definitely keep them indoors with grow lights and a humidifier. As far as editing, that’s my background. I am graphic designer and marketing graduate with a bachelors in commercial arts. It’s comes pretty easy to me to edit. Plus I do enjoy doing it and coming up with new ideas thanks for taking notice. 🤗🫶🏼🙏🏼

    Nelson, That's a beautiful phal. I'll bet that it would win an award at a show. (Maybe you should consult Julien at K-S) Nice pot for that "baby". Your method of potting works well for you. I have been experimenting with tree fern medium with my phals. They seem to like it. I'm so glad that you went with the shorter hair style. For myself, I did the Twiggy (or I also call it the Joan of Arc) short style for the summer. The heat/humidity is much more tolerable with the shorter style.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  Месяц назад

      Hey Pat! Tree fern works well with Phals. Actually Julien was the one who told me I should enter it. Shorter hair is what’s up in the summer. It’s just way too uncomfortable in 100 degree weather. And the humidity makes your hair really frizzy.

      I do see a lot of the signs. But it never comes close to actually being with them in the physical. I never in a million years thought a dog could steal my heart the way Kaylah did. She will forever be my little girl.

      I’m keeping an eye on my bat plant cause the all purpose soil may be too dense. So far it looks amazing. But when the soil is too dense, it can cause root rot. 🤞🏼

    I have not been on for a while. Your White Phal with the blush pink centre reminds me of my overzealous White Philippinensis (very overzealous) orchid which gave me four spikes one after the other!! It finally died, but gave me a beautiful keiki!! Happy weekend.

    My husband and I, over the years, had to say goodbye to so many of our fur babies that the emotion you shared with us awoke the same sadness we experienced. Sadly, it NEVER gets easier. But, yes, when we go home, we will be reunited 🙏. At the first sight of your new “do”, I knew the heat had to have been the decisive factor. You can always go for the Keanu Reeves’ look when it gets cooler🥹. By the way, your Phalaenopsis is SPECTACULAR! Have a lovely weekend😍

    You cut your hair! Looks amazing, though. I'm totally jealous!
    Regarding the roots and spagnum moss... it's a conundrum because if you leave the moss in and it causes some roots to rot, is that any worse than cutting up and damaging lots of roots trying to get the old moss out?
    Also, I love that pot! Where'd ya get it from?

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  Месяц назад +1

      From my personal experience I’ve never really lost a Phalaeonopsis due to not clearing out the old moss. I know it’s a big argument to leave it take out. I like to clean it out when possible. Starting fresh is best. But in this situation the roots grew into a ball so tight that at this moment I may do more damage than good. I may revisit the orchid once all the flowers drop and try a different method to remove all the moss. I just don’t want to disturb it too much to avoid early flower drop.

    I just loss our beloved Female dog yesterday from a speeding vehicle!!! She got ran over by the front and rear tires!!! Just like that she is no longer with us!!! It's actually an adopted dog and she's been with us for 8 years and it hurts us so much from the manner she got killed. I pray for justice ⚖️

    • @naturenel

      Oh that is so so sad. I ran over my own cat about 4 months ago. He was sleeping in a spot I couldn’t see him. He was very very old. Could not hear well. It was very traumatic for me. I’m still coping with it. Guilt is the one things that just does not go away. I feel so guilty. But my vet told me it’s the most common thing out there. Mainly people running over their own fur babies. I wish you peace. I know these times are very hard. 🙏🏼
