    Hi Nelson. Medium is very expensive here so when you have a lot of orchids to repot it can be overwhelming. I try to use fresh medium as much as possible. But sometimes I can't so what I do is desinfect medium of plants that are healthy by putting it in a bucket and spraying a good amount of Physan 20 or SA20 in it. Then I pour boiling water to cover it completely. I let it stand until it cools down. Then I pour the water out and reuse the medium. My orchids hardly ever have died after this method, but I sure saved some money 😂😂😂

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  10 месяцев назад +1

      That sounds like you have had success with what you’re doing. 👍🏼 I totally get it. I’ve put my pots in peroxide for a good 30 minutes and then dry out in sun. All that to save a pot I really liked. When I discover any viral infection, I through the entire thing out. Pot and all. But if you go the extra mile, you greatly reduce any possibility of cross contamination.

      Yes. Lava and charcoal are great because it’s not as easy to overwater. Also, I suggest you put a large fan or 2 smaller ones in you area to circulate the air. That will help out allot.

    Those Cattleyas Nelson😌🙌💞I enjoyed watching very much💖I use sphagnum moss in terracotta pots and find it breaths and is airated well. I do use plastic pots Nelson, but that's when I add bark and large-chip pumice and it works fine.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  10 месяцев назад

      I gave up on all plastic pots. Here in my area it’s way to wet and humid. I use to kill all my Carrleyas and could figure out why. Always root rot. Terracotta is the best for potting. Also any pots with lots of openings. Charcoal and lava pretty much works with most orchids. Most master growers I’ve been visiting all use lava and charcoal.

    Thank you for this great video Nelson. It’s a lovely change for us not in the USA. The shows you go to are wonderful and inspiring but a lot of the orchids aren’t available to us in Australia. Maybe other countries but not here. I love the tours of your own collection too but repotting videos will add a lot more interest to your channel as well for us overseas. Love your channel. Love your outlook on life ❤️. Where’s Morris these days? And I miss Laz too ☺️. Many blessings to you Nelson 🙏. Carole.

Reporting for me I usually do in between work so I never get a chance to record it. I’ll try to squeeze more potting in the future. Morris stays at my neighbors. Every time a male cat decides to stay here, he goes back home. Morris does not like other cats. So he leaves when new ones show up. Ever since Bruce showed up, Morris only comes to visit me at night when Bruce is away hunting.

      Hi Grisel. Yes that’s the cause of allot of death when repotting. It’s always good to leave about a finger from cane and root above the medium. That’s why lava rock and charcoal is good cause it won’t hold all that moisture. I really like that pot from OFE.

    Hi, Nelson great video but please keep an eye on it. My orchid society never recommends glazed pots for orchids because the roots won’t breathe. You need an unglazed pot for orchids. Years ago before I joined an orchid society I lost a few since I kept them in the glazed pots I got them in at HD and Lowe’s. I eventually learned that Better Grow puts them on those pots to make them look pretty to sell but it’s not advised not to keep them permanently. Good luck with this beauty.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  9 месяцев назад

      Hello. Glazed pots with multiple holes are fine for orchids. You should not use regular glaze pots for orchids. These types of pots are sold at all orchid suppliers. I truly doubt the industry would allow sales of these pots at orchid supply stores knowing it’s not good for orchids. The pot I got has plenty of drainage holes everywhere. Plus I use only lava rock and charcoal. It should be fine.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  2 месяца назад

      As I always say, you have to make that judgement call comparing to your environment. If I tell you how I water without knowing your conditions, I could be doing more harm than help. I water mine according to the weather. Watering orchids is a skill that you self learn through studying your location. During summer I water every day and during rainy season I skip days depending on how much rain we’re getting. In Fall and Winter it fluctuates according to the weather.

    Would you use this medium for a phaleanopsis?

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  2 месяца назад

      No. Phals need more moisture. I only use New Zealand moss for Phals.

      @@naturenel - Thanks for your response. What are the advantages of New Zealand moss over other types?

    Hello, how often do you water the orchids?

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  10 месяцев назад +2

      In Fall and Winter I water every 3 to 4 days. If it rains, I don’t water for a couple of days those that are exposed to the rain. In Spring I water every other day. If it rains I don’t water. In summer Florida I water every day except when it rains. The orchids I keep under roof in pots I go by eye. If it’s still moist, no need to water.

      I REALLY like the repotting videos! I have a little cattleya that I will be repotting soon. Since I’m relatively new to cattleyas, I learn a lot from seeing what mediums other, successful growers use.

    Tip another planter upside down to bring your plant closer to the surface and provide better air flow to the ‘soil line’ of your plant.

    How soon after repotting do you water?

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  10 месяцев назад

      Next day on this one in particular. It was late afternoon. If I repot in the morning, then I water right after. You never want to water your orchids late in the day. Always early morning if possible.

    I wish I’d seen this before I repotted my first and only cattleya… which promptly died.

    It was nice to see a repotting video for a change.
    I'm guessing the airy mix is due to the high humidity in Florida.
    I'll have to get gloves that can be reused for repotting. The plastic ones are such a waste.
    Have you tried to grow other epiphytes such as bromeliads? A lot of species are native to Florida.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes here in my area is extremely humid and can be very wet at times. Charcoal and lava work beautifully together. I do have several different bromeliads throughout my ranch.

    Be careful. These meshes are the bottom of the pot. They may suffocate the roots development.

      I’ll keep an eye out. If that were to happen, I can simply pull it out through the drainage hole. It bigger than a quarter so easy enough to remove.
