    Greatly appreciated your 101 class. I am going to give your method a try. I have been collecting orchids 24 years now and I have been unsuccessful with phals.
    phals. I have no problem with Catts, Dends,Oncidium, etc. I live in Miami and I grow outdoors Will keep you posted if I am successful using your method.❤🙏

    If I may weigh in on the subject of growing multiple plants in one container, I have this to offer from observing a lot of orchids in trees and rocks in norther tropical Australia and central and south America. If a tree or rock offers the requirements for an orchid to grow, i.e. exposure to sunlight, water, the right fungus to germinate the seed, nutrient supply, and others, and because orchids seed in the tens of thousands per pod, the breeze that distributes the seed often blows many seeds on one tree limb, trunk or rock face. Specimens of gigantic proportions, according to what we grow in pots, turn out often to be multiple seeds that germinated and grew together in the ideal location they found. The evidence for this is easy to determine when the plants are in bloom and you notice flowers with slight differences, indicating difference seedlings from the same pod have grown into a colony.
    The factor most important is that a group of plants requires more nutrients and water than a single pot. If your strategy meets these extra needs, they grow fine and sometimes even better, from my experience, in a group. Offered for coonsideration. and with with deep gratitude to Nelson for the enormous contribution this channel is making to plant lovers around thw world.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  8 месяцев назад +2

      First of all great story. I loved knowing how the seeds travel and land in clumps on branches. When they bloom you see the difference. That’s awesome. And secondly thank you for your amazing compliment. When I read comments like this, it validates what I do and I’m deeply humbled. Thank you 🙏🏼

    Great repot Nelson! I’ve been adding those packing peanuts for a while now & it is a game changer and that is the best moss 💯. I’ve been avoiding repotting my species phals; thx for the motivation 💚. Sevin (seh-vin 😉) is the best preventive for those pesky thrips! I’m at the point where I buy the concentrate & mix my own, that’s how much I love that stuff. Keep it green hope to see you soon 🤗.

    What a nice repotting for Phals video! Your methods are well-explained and demonstrated. I'm currently trying to grow my phals in shallow pots made by Natalia. I'm using tree fern fiber. So far it seems to be working well for my growing techniques. Unfortunately, I don't have much luck growing in sphagnum. My choice is to use other media. (The spray you use is pronounced like the number, 7.) Honestly you should probably use a mask when you spray with it. My vote is for the short cut for your hair for the summer. (I have mine cut to the "Twiggy" look for the summer. I can't stand the heat/humidity here.) You did a great job with the repotting. Thanks for sharing your video with us.

    Thank you for the tip on Paphs fertilizing! 💚
    I have 1 Paph Lady Isobel in semi-water culture that exhibits the same exact symptom as the one you showed (leaf tip turning brown) usually during summer hot months. I was told it’s salt buildup and to ease up on fertilizer - even though I only use 1/4 tsp per gallon.
    Anyway, i skipped fertilizer last summer and sure enough the symptom went away.
    😅 But the plant also didn’t grow much.
    Maybe I just don’t have the right environment to grow paphs. I will skip fertilizing again this summer and see how it does. 😅

      Another note, to remove any decontamination of used clay pots, old salts, and fertilizers is to make a tub with water, squirt of ammonia, and touch of liquid soap. Rinse well after soaking and air dry. ( maybe dip pots into another tub clean water with distilled vinegar after cleansing then air dry )

    A lot of times in the plant world siblings will not compete in the sense that they won’t “attack” the others. They of course will use nutrients though but you would have the same situation if you interplanted a mother plant with keikis.

    Hello Nelson 😊 Another great video.. I have a question. When you water your phals with the hose, do you water the entire plant including the crown? I was wondering..Do you ever get crown rot? What do you do if you ever get crown rot?
    And by the way you asked about your hair? I love this style on you. Your hair looks so healthy and this style gives you a carefree and softer look. Thanks again for the helpful tutorials. Warm greetings from TnT 💚😎🌴☀️

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  7 месяцев назад +1

      Oh if we all had that one watering system for every season and every orchid, But watering alternates depending on seasons. In the hot summer I drench everything. In winter I try to water mainly the base. I dont really have a crown rot problem. I can count in one hand the times Ive experienced crown rot. But advice to you is water the phals completely and then either blow hard in the center to disperse the trapped water, or simply turn the plant sideways to release the water in the crown. That's basically what I do. Im really trying hard to get through this hot season without cutting it. But I not making any promises. lol!

    Nelson, I really like a man with a pony tail! Then you can undo it when you want to wear your hair long and loose. Do you ever use orchid bark? Bought a Phal. at the grocery store and days later took it out of the container only to find that the roots had been sitting in water and were rotting. Tried orchid bark to re-pot but too late. Now I have a bag of bark. (Will get another Phal. later.) One vote here for a pony tail!

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you! I have done the ponytail many times. It’s alright until I start loosing hair from pulling it back so much. I don’t plan to let it grow that long tho. Just above the shoulders.
      As far as bark goes, I’m not using it much nowadays. It breaks down and becomes a mush after a while causing root rot. I like using lava rock and charcoal for most of the orchids. Specially for Cattleyas and Dendrobiums

      I didn’t buy it. Actually my partner is the person in charge of all building and ordering. I know that you can get it on Amazon. I looked online and this is the info. We do spread a 65% black screen over the white shade plastic in the summer. The sun here is way too strong and the orchid leaves burn.

    First one, you caution against using too big of a pot but the second looked really big for the small plant- how do we know what size to use?

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  6 месяцев назад +1

      The pots should not be much bigger than the current one. If you can fit the current pot loosely inside the new pot, that’s a good way to scale it. I went back to see what you meant about the second one being way too big of a pot. Actually that pot is the perfect size for that one. That Phal was way overdue in the little tiny cup it came in. As a matter of fact that Phal right now is about twice the size in only a few weeks. It was constraint in the cup.

      I water according to the moisture in the moss. Stick your finger in it about 1 inch. If it’s moist or wet don’t water. If it’s dry then water as needed.

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes. I potted 3 Phals in bloom during the video. They do not really effect the blooms. Only if you start damaging the good roots will the blooms be effected.

  • @MichaelGauntlett

    How do you repot the Phals after the roots have attached themselves to the clay pots?

    • @naturenel
      @naturenel  8 месяцев назад

      You can simply wet the root area well and break the pot into pieces until most of the pot pieces are out. Or just put the existing pot in a bigger pot and fill with moss. The terracotta acts as medium.
