    “In the official ICC report, Shady Valley number 13 (Barracuda) sustained little damage in the collision. However, Shady Valley number 7 (Doe Valley) was damaged beyond repair”.
    Moral of the story; don’t mess with the Barracuda…

    Dude, you're insane. And I love you for it. Honestly, I'm surprised this thing doesn't have a reputation for smashing caboosen to matchwood whenever it buffers up on the fly. I'm also just a little surprised you didn't just make it a 2-6-8-2; yeah, you need the extra wheels to carry that Wooten firebox, but if you're already going nuts why not make those extra wheels put down even more power? And of course, the Casey Jones boiler tube whistle, just chef's kiss.
    This thing's gonna pound the whole Shady Valley into the ground, but it will leave a glorious legend. Not least when on some dark and stormy night it's sent to bank an ore train in floodwater conditions, with one of the lead engines blowing a cylinder head halfway up the climb, and still shoving that train over the top just as its boiler blows with the force of half a Hiroshima bomb. Or something like that. Either way, this thing will live and die a legend. It might end up being an AA20 sort of legend, but a legend nonetheless.

    Love the creativity behind this, and the rest of shady valley!
    “There were early concerns that the BARRACUDA would derail and spread the rails like the hated #5, but engine actually proved to have excellent weight distribution, and never caused problems on well-maintained tracks.”
    “However, there were several questions raised about how the railway was able to afford enough coal to keep #13 in service - none of which got a straight answer out of AJ Wright.”

    • @thatredfokker

      It also is safer then most camelbacks due to most of the rear cylinders being under the cab instead of the side rods (like on most camelbacks), so if the side rod breaks, the driver won’t be cut two faster then you can say titanic

    Stumbled across your videos by accident but I’m enjoying them immensely!
    Your engine (which I assume is narrow gauge?) seems very plausible! There were railroads like the Great Northern and Northern Pacific which did experiment with creating their own articulated locomotives, like the 2-6-8-0 series or Southern’s “Poor Man’s Mallets”. Having an automatic stoker would solve the issue of needing a crew member at the firebox door. Also, maybe this engine is fuelled by charcoal, hence why the costs of operating it are so low.
    Out of curiosity, but what is the weird baggage/caboose/combine car in the consist? I’ve never seen anything like it before!

      @thatredfokker  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you! Yeah I tried to make my monster plausible. The combine/caboose hybrid is one of two. They were modified with cupolas to house sharpshooters to fend off against train robbers

    Dear ThatRedFokker,
    Here is the dimensions for an on30 idea I’m currently working on, I think it would be right at home on your shady valley railroad. The dimensions are as follows:
    108” diameter boiler,260 psi working pressure, 36” diameter drivers, outside frame,coal fired, a belpair firebox,32”x36” pistons, 2-10-4 wheel arrangement,
    105,000 pounds of tractive effort, with a 40’ tender capable of holding 21 tons of coal and 30,000 gallons of water.
