Diego Maradona and Pele are inarguably two of the great players in the history of the game. But they also have an eternal rivalry, punctuated by arguments and bitterness, and sustained by ego and vanity. In this video, James Montague charts the chronology of their unique, decades-long relationship.

If they mentioned Maradona off field problems... they should've mentioned how Pele's never acknowledge his own daughter, despite DNA saying otherwise.
On her deathbed her final wish was to see her father.... Pele never went to see her.
He was no saint either... but if you speak about Maradona's flaws, mention Pele's as well.
Family is above anything... that is why Brazilians prefer Ayrton Senna rather than Pele.
You seem surprised, are you new here?
This is standard on this channel
Fred Vasquez The world LOVES to hate on Diego. He’s an easy target because he was a “bad boy” in the public eye compared to Pele (who was far from a saint as you mentioned). The fact remains Pele never carried a prominent EUROPEAN team from 0 to glory like DM did with Napoli, while simultaneously doing it with Argentina in the WC. I get so tired of the anti-Argentine and anti-Southern Italian bias in football, especially from the English lads. FORZA NAPOLI SEMPRE!!! D10S FOREVER!
@@600HP_Camaro you know Maradona didn't carry neither Napoli or Argentina either. Even Maradona who have the biggest ego in the world repeatedly said so

The English are insufferable with this shit. If Maradona had had a shit game and the handball goal tied it and Argentina won it on penalties MAYBE they'd have an argument in constantly bringing it up. But no, they won 2-1, Maradona had an outstanding game, and his second goal was kinda good. They need to STFU.
Big Worm but as you said it was a one goal difference. That means that goal meant A FUCKING LOT
Nice documentary, but you forgot something very important: Diego Maradona was the first important player to fight againts corruption on FIFA's authorities, the same people that now (20+ years after he started to battle against them) are being investigated by justice. And he was the biggest promoter of the first International Syndicate for footballers (the precedent for modern Fifpro). Pele was and always will always be on FIFAs side. All the people who criticizes Maradona talk about the cheating and the addictions and excess in his personal life, but he always used the power of his figure to fight for the ones that couldn't. He never forgot where he came from... And that's a reason why a lot of powerful people attack, dislike and criticize Maradona.
Nailed it. Perfect comment. Even from this video it is clear that Diego is the man of the people. Pele is the man of the establishment.
You hit the nail straight on the head.
I too prefer Diego over Pelé. But recently he sold out to FIFA, which is just as if not more corrupt than ever...
Finally someone said it!
Pele did always have that militaristic totalitarian side which coincides perfectly with FIFA xD Brasil had a military dictatorship when pele was a kid
Spot on about the Pele/Garrincha comparison. My mum (she's Brazilian) always told me that is the greatest to ever play was Pele but Garrincha was the player of the people. What a doc this is, great content
Garrincha was better. Pele was marketed by FIFA...corrupt colleagues of Pele.
Garrincha was better than Pelé. Garrincha and Maradona are the only 2 players in history that pretty much won a World Cup on their own. Garrincha in 62 and Maradona in 86.
Yeah and I'm sure a english mum would say Jack wilshere is the best player of all time & david Beckham is player of people.

@@kiinyuum8001 80 % of modern fans never even heard about garrincha, lol
@Tarik Ashmawi I was born in Rio de janerio in Brazil to a Greek dad and Brazilian mum and moved to London when I was very young, still here now
I find the whole ‘They didn’t fulfil their potential’ idea rather infuriating, because it downplays the importance of discipline and mental fortitude to football. ‘If Maradona hadn’t taken drugs’ then he’d have been a different person and a better footballer but he wasn’t. A player’s mental attributes off the pitch are as much part of their footballing talent as their technical skill or creativity
Completely agree. Footballer = Talent + Mentality. You know some people say "I could've made it as a professional"? I am sort of one of them - I played at a championship team's academy but I quit around the age of 14 because the pressure was too much. The physical talent and attributes were there, but the mental fortitude was not. I could never have coped with all the pressure from the fans and coaches! I cared way too much about what the manager thought of me rather than just playing for fun (which is when I played my best football)... so in conclusion I COULDN'T have made it pro, I didn't have the mentality!
@@whitenbald same I was a confidence player, moment pressure got to me everything fell apart.
Players need you, Manners
Absolutely, cause then you could make a case for Balotelli being as good as Pele if only he worked harder
It's more of a statement of speculation rather than comparison. Also some players are just unfortunate though, in case of circumstances like injuries
Was watching this when I got the news about Pelé. My heart hurts, may these two legends RIP. Football miss you both. Thank you for everything
Garrincha is worth his own video and to anybody curious his biography by Ruy Castro is some of the most heartwarming and heartwrenching reading I've ever done on football.

This was such a good video!! Great work, Tifo!
But, another thing called my attention during this, the phrase "Brazil is not a country of winners, it's a country of people who like to have fun". As a brazillian, this struck me as a lightning, and indeed that's what we are
you can always do both...have fun and win 5 world cups
Nada a ver, cara. Brasileiro só preza resultado. Tanto que depois que um time perde 3 jogos sobre qualquer condição, já começam a cogitar demissão de técnico, falar que jogador não tem raça.
@@luisgustavopecanha5507 I agree
I mean it is a country of winners lol, that phrase is just coping from people who are jealous of a non-european, global south, south american nation winning way more than them. And Luiz Gustavo is right, Brazilians only care about the results, we only celebrate when we win, that's why we are celebrating all the time, but if we don't win we of course are not gonna celebrate.

My kid will be watching the same video conceptually, but Messi Vs Ronaldo
without drugs
@Binamra Sharma you cannot compare having using drugs as a kid because of a birth defect, to Maradona who was addicted to cocaine
Binamra Sharma those were supplements for his growth hormone deficiency. It was for a medical condition, not an addiction or a performance booster🤦🏾♂️
@Binamra Sharma We all have the "drug" in our body. Growth hormones help us grow bud
@Binamra Sharma You have got a point, but it can be used for medical purposes as it wasn't an enhancer
maradona has hilarious turns of phrase. "I will become bin laden"
cocaine is a hell of a drug
What bin laden has done?
"laden" is kind of archaic as a term, when foreigners speak English they do say things that are quite funny unbeknownst to themselves.
Maybe he meant ‘most wanted’ or ‘most hated’. As he was referencing the hate and criticism and backlash he was receiving from the media and his reactions to the media
he's just a dope. literally and figuratively
Pele popularized soccer in the United States when he signed with the New York Cosmos. Yes, they threw a lot of money at him, but he had a lot to lose when it came to his legacy. He was told during his recruitment, "You can sign with Santos and win another league title, or you can sign with the Cosmos and win a nation."
From footballing point of view, i think it's almost impossible to compare two players from two entirely different time period
exactly
You can only really compare how dominant they were in their specific era. But then again not comparing players.. where's the fun it that?
You are right. I think is very hard to compare Ronaldo and Messi, they are different kind of players. Players of different ages is far away harder
Flashback in 1986 World Cup, I saw a man dribbling about 6 players and score a goal. My age 8yr. And after 15yr, I knew the player is Maradona..

@@drsmart0078 I agree with you bro. Argentina in the past is Maradona + other players. Maradona is the central of the team. In Messi era, Argentina have so many talented players, but they can't play toghether as a team. I hope someday Messi win big Trophy for his country..
Yes but he cheated among other things.
For people who don’t know; at 6:20, Maradona referred to “Senna” as in Ayrton Senna. Ayrton Senna was a Formula 1 driver who won 3 world drivers championships, and was regarded by many at the time (and some still now) as the greatest racing driver of all time. Many described him as having a god given talent unlike anyone before him as he performed many previously unthinkably great feats in his time in F1. He tragically died in a crash at the dark weekend of Imola 1994 but his legacy lives on as many still consider him the greatest Brazilian athlete alongside, or even ahead, of Pelé, as Maradona pointed out in his snide remark.
Senna thought god was really with him and drove like someone who believed they weren’t mortal. I heard that his wheels would be 2 inches tighter on corners than any other driver in F1 history.
@penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli Zidane carried France by himself? Lol Are you mad? Bartez, Blanc, Desailly, Thuram, Lizerazu, Deschamps, Karembeu, Djorkaeff, Henry. That team was loaded.
@penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli not sure I agree with that. Barthez had the tournament of his career. Thuram went on to be one of the best defenders in the world and scored two great goals in one game. Lauren Blanc was a great central defender. Desailly was also a top defender. Lizarazu was widely regarded as the second best left back in the world at the time.
Deschamps was the Juve captain. Djorkaeff, Pires & Dugarry were no slouches.
The only problem they had were strikers who weren't clinical enough at that time but still went on to be world class.
I'm not trying to start an argument just offering my point of view in that the France 98 squad was class and even without Zidane would have been one of the favourites in their home tournament. Zidane was on a level above everyone else but that team allowed him the freedom to express himself in front of a world class defensive unit.
CR7 they blew it because it was 10 vs 11. Zidane played with a lot of great players
@CR7 lol I am not sure Jorge Burruchaga , Jorge Valdano are classified as great players who are remembered so much
I dont think anyone in Brasil compares Neymar to Messi. We are all Messi and CR fans and know that there is no Brazilian player on that level apart from Pele and R9 before his injuries

RIP MARADONA (1960 - 2020)
RIP PELE (1940 - 2022)
Very well put together. I am from Naples. I have a good friend from Rio. We have this debate all the time and we came to the same conclusion. They are exact opposites but equals. They both overcame great economical struggles to become the best in the world for their time. Pele has always had speed and was always in great shape. He had the rhythm of the samba, the Ginga of capoeira, the dance that we all fell in love with, even with the subsequent Brazilian players like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Neymar. He was fun and exciting to watch along with the team around him. They refreshed a stale sport that was dominated by European countries.
Maradona had alien talent. Nobody knows where his talent comes from. It is completely natural or unnatural, you pick. He was always a fat little slippery eel that pushed the limits to the edge for everything. He looked at it as if he wasn't riding on the edge, life is just too boring to live. As a kid, he would go play ball instead of doing his chores and take the beatings from his dad. That is the Italian in him. He was born with an unconscious ability to control any ball, any size with his feet, predominantly his left. There is a video of him when he was at Napoli juggling a foosball. Platini said, what Zidane can do with a ball, Maradona can do with an orange. Call it a gift from God, call it nature, call it genes, call it what you want, nobody has come along with that type of talent. Not Messi, not Cristiano Ronaldo. Maybe Ronaldinho, and he played futsal as a kid. He had his problems off the pitch as well, still has those problems today but that doesn't make what he did with the Brazilian side and Barca nothing. There are only a few players that played for Barca and were applauded by Real Madrid fans, Maradona and Ronaldinho are among them.
Messi has the same talent
Don't forget Maradona was with Argentinos Juniors before Boca, if I remember correctly.
You're absolutely right.
You’re correct mate
Yea at like 16 I think, he was insanely good lol people couldn’t believe it. Both River and Boca wanted him after that
That´s correct. In fact, he once scored a whooping 4 goals against Boca, including an amazing free kick. He was like 17 or something. Its part of why they signed him later.
@@maximilianovazquez9988 So crazy how early the most talented South Americans can shine.. Maradona, Ronaldo, Pelé, were all prodigies before turning 18!
It's interesting how there is this animosity between Pele and Maradona (mostly at Maradona's side) while Messi and Ronaldo just really respect each other off the pitch. Also, the greatest "what if" in football history is Ronaldo Fenomeno.
I think Marco van Basten is the greatest “what if” in football
Dude are you blind? The rivalry is mostly on Pele's side. Check the latest years, its always Pele saying he is the best, throwing jabs at Maradona AND Messi. The dude is always comparing himself, talk about an inferiority complex

Different era players. Both geniuses. My dad loved watching Pele when he was growing up but also really enjoyed watching Maradona as an adult. For him, both were amazing to watch but both different style of player.
Who was better? Very subjective. For me Maradona was more highly skilled, better dribbler and more inventive. Pele was a better overall player as I have read that he was the reserve keeper for the team before substitutions were allowed and played in goals a few times, help defence a lot plus was more a team player in terms of doing everything on the pitch.
This argument will never end. All subjective.
Both way before my time. My dad said he never thought he would see a better footballer than Maradona until Messi came. The documentary titled "Maradona" is a great watch and after watching that made me swing towards Maradona over Pele, although I never watched either
There is no discussion. Maradona is not comparable to Pele.
Maradona isn't a better dribbler than Pele sorry
It is not fair to compare players of different eras. All sports became markedly more professional in the 80s and 90s. The players today who work grueling training sessions perfecting their craft under the watchful eyes of expert coaches and physical therapists and dietitians can physically perform at a level that earlier players could never dream of. But those earlier players were more often products of individual genius and inspiration and happenstance -- that they trained themselves to greatness is no small thing to consider.
@Harris Zaindi Pele was a better striker, header, playmaker, ambidextrous...Maradona was a better dribbler and that's it. There's no comparison, Pele way better.

Funnily enough, Maradona in his younger days was huge fan of Pelé often referring to him as the GoAT. There are even videos of it.

Yes he did call him that in that meeting in 1978 when they first met, but got to remember maradona was only 17-18 and barely had started his career 2 years earlier. And he was already being compared to Pele not to mention Pele throwing jabs at him all through his career, especially in the 90s when his drug addiction got out of control, i am guessing Maradona just had enough of peles subtle digs.

9:09 I am sorry but this is a huge generalization. To claim brazilians love Garrincha more than Pele because brazilians don't like winners as much is a big reach. Ayrton Senna was one of the most competitive sport professionals ever. I'd argue he is more popular in Brazil than Pelé, and he is way more competitive than Pelé ever was. Senna was the toxic competitive type, he had a big ego and he wanted to win no matter what, on his terms. Some people in Brazil don't like Pelé as much because he is an international superstar, brazilians hate people that pretend they don't know where they come from, people that don't talk a lot about their roots. Regardless, Pelé is incredibly loved here in Brazil, is he worshipped like Maradona is in Argentina? No, but he is up there at the Pantheon.
@Pedro Guedes We agree that he's the best but I would agree that Senna is the most beloved of them all, surely because of his tragic early death. I would go further and say that Zico is the most beloved and respected player in Brazil. By far amongst the players.
I don't think so, Senna is not as popular as he was in the 90's, I'm from just one generation after Senna and he doesn't mean as much for me, specially cuz Brazil is not even relevant in the F1 anymore. Pelé on the other hand is still the greatest after many decades that he stopped playing, I mean dude is one of the post cards of Brazil aside with Tom Jobim's Garota de Ipanema and Jorge Ben's Mas que Nada.
They are playing football together now in heaven. rest in peace you both legends. your legacy will move on forever.

This is my new favourite channel on RUclips. I think a videos on the person and footballer Garrincha was would be amazing especially to those who where not around in his era. Keep up the good work :)
fantastic video
Who's the best? "I am, said George"
Steve Haha . George Best was a Terrific footballer. I wasn’t even born when he retired .
But thanks to RUclips I can discover his sublime skills . Still , the Best Ever was
Diego Armando Maradona. No one even comes closer .
@@drsmart0078 maradonna will only be remembered for his great goal against England, and the one that shouldn't of been...in other words, imo he was a dirty cheating, fat drug taking cheating bastard....bit like Louis saurez, who repeatedly bit opponents & handled the ball on the line to cheat to keep his team in the world cup....and best liked a drink....but was the original superstar of football.
Tifo should do a video on why Pele isn’t a ‘Fraud’
Theo Bromley HITC Sevens have already done one
@Aryan Sharma his CV says otherwise. It is just hard for people to accept.
@Aryan Sharma over rated is a ridiculous term to use to the best player of all time.
If he is a fraud he scored 6 goal in 3 machtes in wc
@Aryan Sharma 14 WC games, 12 goals and 10 assists. Put that in our pipe and smoke it lol
Brilliantly done.
This is my favorite tifo video, as he said, this video is not only about those two players, is about how we build heroes, it's a story bigger than football
The answer to the question what Maradona could have been if he was disciplined was answered...
The answer is Messi... he would have been Messi
I answered Pele 😂😂😂but your answer is great also 😂😂😂😂
Great writing. I remember these feuds. I'm sure if this was a 90 minute documentary you would cover that, but the awards from FIFA were given amongst corruption scandals (as always), with the clear intention to distract the audience of what was going on with some of the white collars of the game. Let's not forget that if Maradona had led Argentina to a World Cup title in 1990, it would be their third title, just like Brazil at the time, so that added up to the dispute. Since 1990, the Argentine national team have derailed instead (because of their own misleadings, specially with AFA). It's nice that this wasn't about choosing sides, since it's almost impossible to assess who was the greatest player. This is football, not and exact science, so polarized concepts shouldn't be eligible. Thanks, it made my Saturday night!
Interesting take
This is one of your best videos. Be proud of yourself. Well done brother 👍👌🏻
Great video 👏👏👏
Started to watch the video with just a little over 500 views, finished watching at 1.6k views!
Rip two greats.
This was an awesome video!
Great ,great video ❤👍
“Maradona thanked his wife and his old friend Fidel Castro”
That was probably an awkward moment 😂
Damn near choked on a peanut when I heard that
Both Pelé and Maradona are in my Top 3..
I would rate Pelé slightly higher than Maradona mainly in terms of consistency and longevity...but not many know how clutch Pelé actually was....especially in World Cups..
He has the Most Assists in World Cup History
3 Goals and 3 Assists in 2 WC Finals (Maradona has only 1 assist in 2 WC finals)
The most mindblowing fact...He has either scored a goal or provided an assist in EVERY SINGLE WORLD CUP MATCH HE PLAYED....so he was in the scoresheet in every World Cup game....if that isn’t clutch I dunno what is..
penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli...
He only scored 1 goal in the 1962 tournament because he got injured for the rest..
Please don’t tell me you are blaming an injury as a flaw in Pelé’s resume..
penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli
Pelé was out for the rest of the tournament!!
He didn’t even play the rest of the 62 WC due to the horrendous injury..
Desporto... ???
Does Messi live in your head rent free? 😂
I didn’t even mention Messi you moron 🖕🏻
This was brilliant,no doubt both are legend's
I've been waiting for this video forever
Pele age 35 to 37, 37 goals in 64 games for New York Cosmos.
Zlatan age 37 to 38, 52 goals in 56 games for LA Galaxy.
And?
Pelé wasn't a centre forward, he was more like a "false 9" when Ibrahimovic is a pure centre forward, what are you talking about?
The Brazilian has more than 700 goals
The Swiss has 400 hahahahah
8:53 Am I Brazilian coz I'm the same way .... I love GARRINCHA the dream of football, playing for fun
This is my favorite video from you guys
very good documentary.
