I think most Brazilians have no idea the effect Pele had on people far away from Brazil. In his prime every kid in Africa wanted just to be Pele. For the African populace in large Pele was on mythological par with the likes of the Greek gods like Zeus. His name was synonymous with lightening, tornedo or hurricane. He was the mega force, the atomic bomb of football. To Africans when someone mentions Pele there is only one thing that comes to mind BRAZIL... and when someone mentions Brazil, there is only one name that comes to mind PELE! Brazil=Pele and Pele=Brazil. Period! He is the first and last Brazilian to put Brazil right on the world map. Because of Pele Africans till now LOVE and root for the Brazilian team. When Brazil loses in world cup, Africa is in tears and when Brazil wins, the whole Africa is overjoyed. He engraved the Brazilian yellow jersey and the legendary number 10 on every non Brazilian child, man, and woman's mind. On every African country sport radio broadcasts, there was only megastar that controlled the air waves, Pele!. Legend has it that people used to kiss the ground he walked on. I can go on and on about his legends. The words "GOAT" or "King of football" don't do any justice to him. He was bigger than the game itself. He overshadows the entire game. Without him, football has no meaning at all. He is the father and football is just his little kid.

@@royjohnson2519 It's mainly because the modern players today have so much influence from the old players. Lets say Messi was in the time of Pele. He would be a great player, yes, but he wouldn't be as prodigious as now. Why? Because the Olden players had invented so many things that the newer players took and mastered. Without those being invented, the prestige of a certain character wouldn't be there. But if you were to take Pele and put him in modern times, the exact opposite would happen. The techniques invented by the older players would get nurtured by Pele and he could change it into a godlike thing. A prime example of this could be Zidane's Marielle Roulette, which was invented by Maradona. If Maradona never invented that, Zidane's skills may have been hurt as he didn't know how he could do it.

One important thing to realize, in Pelé’s time, fields were more rugged, the ball was heavier and red cards weren’t introduced in the World Cup until 1970, so it was a lot more physical than it is today. Tackles that would warrant red cards today were more commonplace back then. In his time, many soccer players did not have too many veteran players to look back on and learn from them. In a way, they did it first. He also existed in a time without social media, color TV and there is not too much footage of him, so a lot of younger generations simply cannot relate and really comprehend how monumental he really was. Pelé is simply the all time goat, and people who undervalue his contributions not only to football but to many other things are for the most part ignorant, delusional or just don’t know what they’re talking about.

I followed the career of Pelé since he became the youngest player to win a world cup in a brilliant display of skills with the brazilian national team in Sweden 1958 at the age of 17, a record as of today no player has been able to beat. During his career, Pelé was without any doubt the most complete football player the world has seen since football was created, with an extraordinary combination of talents to play football. His international performances with Santos FC and the Brazilian team in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America awed the world converting him in an international celebrity, one of the most popular human beings on earth and an ambassador of the game. Pelé was unique and unrepeatable and can not be compared with any other players because he has always been above the best of all time. My respects to Pelé ' The king of football'. He transcended football, hell he even transcended sports. What they lacked was the combined knowledge we have accrued,. They just didnt have as strong of an understanding of the mysteries of what made the world work, which are things we only know because of building on the work they initially laid out for us. What we lack is their penchant for engineering practical solutions and the ability to create without relying on super precise machine tolerances. Humans have always been about as mentally capable as any other generation, give or take a little because of modern nutrition and lack of famines driving the average up a bit.

Another day I've seen a random guy saying that Pelé's stats in national tournaments are not that good because Brazilian League sucked. All right, he seems to ignore that almost every brazilian champion of the world in 58, 62 and 70 played in Brazil, and that south american and european leagues didn't have the economic abyss they have today, and that playing with south americans or europeans Pelé was absolutely dominant. Brilliant mate, just another fact, not almost all the players who were champions of 58,62 and 1970 World Cup played in Brazilian league, but simply ALL OF THEM did in fact play in Brazilian leagues. Back then, even though Brazil did already export a few top class players like Evaristo de Macedo (Barça, Real Madrid), the Brazilian confederation scouts did not have enough media coverage from abroad to know how well those players were doing, and, since Brazilian club sides had an overwhelming record against european ones, Brazilian managers simply did not call upon Brazilian players playing abroad in Europe or anywhere outside Brazil. That only started for the seleção already in the 80ies, when plenty of it's top stars went to play on Serie A (Italy) and that tournament got TV coverage and was broadcasted to Brazil.

    • @robertgregory9896
      @robertgregory9896 6 месяцев назад

There was no single Brazilian league at the time. Until (I think) 1971, it was only the state championships. Maybe they had a round of playoffs to determine an overall champion, but Brazil was too big and too poor to sustain a nationwide round-robin tournament. While I've little doubt that the best teams in the Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo state leagues were every bit as good as their European equivalents back then, it may be that those competitions did not have the same depth. (I have no idea whether that's true or not; but the fact that Didi, Garrincha et al played in those competitions doesn't change the fact that it may be. The highest level of play in those competitions must have been excellent, but that tells us nothing about the lowest or the middling.)

There are some great stories about Pele's career you didn't have time to mention. Pele was also a great goalie, 4 times when the goalie got injured and theres was no substitute, Pele stood up and put the gloves. In the four times, his team won and he suffered no goals
Once Pele went for a match in Colombia, it was an event, stadium full of people to see him play, but then in the middle of the game, Pele complained with the referee and the referee gave hom the equivalent of a red card. There was comotion in the field, the crowd went crazy, the game had to be stopped, chaos ensued, but then, the match promoters decided to bring Pele back and replaced the referee with the linesman.
Also, when Pele was on the verge of scoring the 1000th goal, he kicked the ball and a defender saved the goal at the final line, after the goalie was already beaten. The supporters of the defender's team scolded him for the rest of his career for stopping Peles 1000th goal at that moment, and erasing them from history as the team that would forever be know for being the KING scored his 1000th goal.

Nice to watch a brilliant player but I am sure they don't count all the baskets scored by the globe trotters as in exhibition matches as valid for a players career.
As to the myth they stopped the war in Nigeria, they played the game in Lagos SW Nigeria -- the Biafran war was 400 miles away in SW Nigeria so how did some players claim to hear gunfire as their plane took off? eh kinda apples and oranges for examples. All of those guys could still be great classical composers but whether they could make the jump to the modern electric soundscape with different styles of music, where they would achieve similar fame to their historical identity, is something that is conjecture. Pele played the same soccer they play today, with minor rule adjustments.
Its not a matter of how good people are comparing one era to the other, its a matter of how dominant someone was against their peers because that tells us how exceptional they were as a player. Pele today would have access to modern medicine, training and nutrition information, but so would his peers as well. If he remained as dominant vs the average today as he was then he definitely would be giving Messi and CR7 some problems for the Ballon D'or.

Now, Messi getting clipped by one of those tackles would never get in those boots again. Amazing player, don’t get me wrong, but the leagues of Pele? No chance. Messi could never play in those conditions, however he would run rings round players, the physicality would take its toll on him. But, we don’t need to divide anyone. Youre actually describing Messi, or did you ever see Pele play on the right Midfield, or s a False 9? Messi played at every offensive position that exists on a at least World Class Level or lets say on a messi Level, which means no one ever reached that.
Messi is the best passer and playmaker by far, the best dribbler by far in the history of the sport and the fastest one on top of that. And with that i dont mean just running a straight line with the ball as fast as possible and hoping to pass 1-2 players maximum. I mean real dribbling with changing directions with unbelivable timing, simply as efficient as possible while outdribbling up to 5-6 defenders, the whole defence actually, and on top of that scoring a spectacular goal, like the lobs over the GK that Messi does, no one in the History of the Sport has as much the so calle "chip" over the GK goals, which needs so much ball control, timing and and also cojones. Pretty much every footballer is already happy to do that once or twice in their careers, Messi has done that at least 50 times. Plu i cant recall even a single time where he failed to do it. His ball control is just otherwordly, no matter what he is doing, and thats what separates him from anyone else.
But i stop here, allthough i could write hours about Messis superior skills and the reason why he is easily the greatest, the best footballler of all time.
I watch Football since a lil over 40 years, my first years watching was about in 1980/81, so fact is ive seen a lot of great player come and go, but no one ever impressed me as Messi did.
And i already said about 10 years ago that he is the GOAT, him winning the WC had no influence on that.
Also, Pele is obviously one of the greatest, easily Top 5, if not top 3. Some peole will think i have something against pele just because i dont share their opinions, which is total bullshit.
Why should i have anything aginst one of the very best, most skilled, revolutionizing, and one of the most laid back and humble men to ever live....
      Siempre Pele

This apparently has been a trend in recent years, especially with people who use twitter. They try to take away the importance of huge icons like Michael Jackson by saying that he "wasn't all that".

Pele = The best. A teenager 2 goals and 1 assist at World Cup final. The overhyped Messi can't do it . He hadn't done well at KO stages (very little goals and assists in 4WCs and at best "decent" assits in 4 or 5 CAs ) since 2006 to 2019. I hope brazilians not to call Messi GOAT. A team got 6 dubious penalties in a single tournament is almost a fraud. It's just like 1978 WC title team. Nobody cares. People show more respect to Hungary 1954, Netherlands 1974 and Brazil 1982 although they're not title team. Justice is needed. Brazilian friends please don't let us foreigner fans down.

There's a video that that is players doing some skill moves, that Pelé previously did, despite him playing in the 60s and 70s. The man is just legendary, 2 goals in WC final with 17 years, free kick goals with both feet, a header menace, despite being 1,70m tall, the only player to ever win three World Cup finals, the man that paused a war in Nigeria just cus he went there to play. He is the biggest player of Santos history, by far. He won 5 Brazilian Championship titltes with them, their first five. After Pelé, it took them another 34 years to win it again. He won Two Libertadores, Santos won it again just 48 years later. He was champion of the world against Eusebio's Benfica and Milan. Pelé was the WC all time goal scorer before Ronaldo Nazário and Klose. Pelé ran (like Usain Bolt) so Neymar could walk. Pelé was so disruptive for his time, he seems like a player from the 1990s or 2000s, even though he played in the 60s and early 70s. He was strong, fast, had no weakfoot, header menace in the box, a complete player. Imagine if Pelé played with today's Medicine? He would be even bigger than he his. He was a true legend of the game, he is the biggest player of the biggest nation of football. Please, have some respect on him

Pelé is the goat. He won everything, he did everything, he was a machine.
We brazilians will always miss these times, we had the best football in the world, our teams were the best, before the europeans empty our competition by buying our best talents.
Our Seleção was the greatest too, our dominance was the stuff of legends, even the Seleções that lose are imortal like the 82’s team, or we’re literally robbed like 78’s.
Now it all crumbled, our league struggle and even our richest clubs can’t compete with europeans, our talent pool is as shallow as ever was, and every talented player is co-opted young and never have the chance to develop as a brazilian player, the flair, the talent gave place to the physicality and we lost our edge, to make things worse since 82 brazilians tend to prefer results over talent and our Seleção suffered because this.
I hope that our league and national team can be great again, but without huge changes I can see Brasil football starting to fade away.
