Benfica who in turn had demolished everyone in Europe and yet they couldn't handle Pelé. Back then, Brazilian clubs used to tour Europe and get huge results, there's even an anecdote of Garrincha scoring 5 times, which prompted his coach to ask him to stop as to not embarass their host, which Garrincha responded by leaving the whole defensive system in shambles, rounding the keeper, getting to the line and turning back.
The issue is that in recent years, Maradona let his football do the talking, while Pele and Santos decided that they need to remind everyone every single second that he was an amazing footballer. Like the time when Ronaldo became the player with the most club goals in history (I believe thats the statistic) and then Santos suddenly came out with an extra 300 or so goals for Pele. The revisionist history about that era in football is astounding. Maradona played in an era where the average of the players was of a much higher quality, where he played in a foreign country almost his entire career (as opposed to the Brazilians in the 60s where they all stayed in Brazil), and he wasn't playing surrounded by some of the greatest players of all time.
@@herrerasauro7429 That is simply not true. Between 1960-1970 (Peles peak years), European teams won the Intercontinental Cup 7 times to South American teams 4 times. In 1962, Benfica didn't 'demolish' everyone in Europe. They only won the semi final of the European Cup 3-2 on aggregate. There ABSOLUTELY were such things as 'bigger clubs in Europe'. Real Madrid for example, by then Puskas and Di Stafano had already played for them. In 1963 when Milan played Santos, Milan ABSOLUTELY DEMOLISHED Santos by 4-2. However Santos won the second leg and then won the tie in extra time. See how your example is pretty dumb? Milan and Manchester United had already been around for over 10 years longer than Santos had. To try to claim that South American club football (especially Brazilian clubs) in the 60s and 70s was some kind of sphere of excellence that no other continent could come close to is the exact reason why so many people are fed up of Pele. If South American teams were so good, then why did Pele score '1000' goals against primarily them?
This episode is good but it does not lean into one of the most important aspects of this beef. Pelé is brazilian, Maradona is argentinian. When it comes to football there's is much respect on either side, but also a fierce rivalry between the two countries. It is only natural that the two best players ever for each country would be caught up on that. On a side note, the argument that the brazilian league in the 60's and 70's was weaker than europe is stupid. That was the golden age of brazilian football, when when won 3 out of 4 world cups with homegrown talent. That league was the strongest and most competitive in the world at the time. My hometown Cruzeiro even beat Pelé's Santos at his peak 6-2 on our way to a national title. Brazil's 70 seleção featured players from many brazilian squad that were overflowing with talent then. It was very close to the american basketbalk dream team in the Barcelona olympics.
Yeah that argument is overused but not true, there wasn't a official national league in Brazil until 1971, which means most of the time pele was playing and participating in badly organized regional/ state tournaments for most of his career. The Brazilian Federation didn't get serious until 1971 about forming a serious organized league until 1971, by which time pele was turning 31 in 1971.
Yeah, people keep repeating that Pelé never went to Europe when Benfica, who thrashed european teams, was thrashed by Santos. And Santos had their match back in Brazil in Cruzeiro, Botafogo, Fluminense and others...
Oh yeah, that argument is so stupid. U had Brazil win the World Cup 3 out of 4 times between 1958 and 1970 and none of their players played in Europe. So how can you even claim ur league is better than Brazil’s league
@@herrerasauro7429 Not only Benfica. They thrashed Barcelona, they thrashed Milan. Nearly every main European team of that era saw themselves losing against Santos. The only exception was Real Madrid, but because Santiago Bernabéu himself ordered that the main team had to rest for a week, while Santos came on a frantic, 3-games-a-week schedule. Real won a close game, despite Santos playing tired. Bernabéu would then reject anyone from Santos asking for a rematch, perhaps knowing that his team lucked out that game. If the president of the team that had just won 5 European Leagues trembled by the notion of losing a rematch against a team that would probably arrive tiresome due to a load of matches played in so little time... That pretty much sums up how freaking powerful was Santos.
What also helped, was the CR7 and Messi era. People started to call them 2 the goats instead of Pele and Maradona. So Pele and Maradona had a common enemy. We saw Pele try to remind everyone that he has more goals than CR7 and Maradona try to remind everyone that Messi can't win a world cup.
The best player of all time is Messi by so long of a distance vs whoever you choose to put in 2nd place that it's not fair to other people to be compared to him. Using number of World Cups won to determine who is "better" means Antoine Griezmann is better than Messi? Olivier Giroud? André Schürrle? David Villa? Luca Toni? GTFO lol Football isn't tennis. There are 11 guys on the field, not 1.
@@javiazar Nah, I disagree. None of those guys were the best players on their team winning the WC. If a great player can carry other players to win a team trophy, that's astonishing. Incredible. True greatness. However let's not forget that Maradona did use his hand.
Younger fans will usually side with the players they got to see in their lifetime, ie Messi and CR7 today, and Pele and Maradona therefore can’t possibly be as good. They are all great players, but in their prime, it’s Maradona for me.
These goat debates often seem to come down to what you consider more impressive. Pele had something of a perfect carreer. Maradona was the technically perfect virtuoso that amazed the word. Jordan also had a kind of perfect carreer (two three-peates, etc.), whereas Lebron is the phisical beast that can do it all. It also usually gets mixed with discussion about values and choices each player made. Lebron changed teams a handful of times, Jordan didn't. Maradona was a drug addict, but he also unionized the sport, whereas Pele didn't.
Pele never proved himself in Europe. Yes he played on a good team at the time in Santos but it was hardly a perfect career where there is no unanswered questions
yeah thats true, there are so much stats and things you can link to players. That's why there is still a goat debate between Messi, Ronaldo, Pele, Cruijff and Maradona. Because you can make a compelling argument for the best players in the game
@@heehee4651 the Brazilian league was better than the majority of European football in the 60s, with the exception of Italy. So much so that Pelé's Santos crushed Eusebio's Benfica and AC Milan in the Intercontinental Cup
I don't know about that. 1950's World Cup final loss at Maracanà wasn't worse as far as result goes, but it was WAY worse for the Brazilan National Team and their country. Literally dozens of people committed suicide on the spot.
Probably yes, but Brazil also had two World Cup games that shocked the whole country and left lasting scars: the 2-1 loss to Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final (in Brazil) and the 3-2 loss to Italy in 1982, when the Seleção was considered the best one ever.
@@riccardosantella1200 Absolutely amazing that people will take a game so seriously, that they willingly end their life because of it. I'm a huge Brazil fan, and the 7-1 disaster left me stunned to my soul. But, in the end it's just a game, and I'm not crazy. Brazil 2022!!!!
That Argentine team wasn’t average. They were just set up to be ultra-defensive by Bilardo so Maradona didn’t have to do any defensive work. Also if someone fouled him his teammates would oblige the opponent.
It was quite a solid team. For example, no opponent player had a 1-on-1 against the goalkeeper, controlling the ball [like Burruchage in the 3-2 against West Germany]. But individually, Brazil 1970 had more talent than Argentina 1986.
The very final is proof that this wasn't an "very average" team. Beckenbauer sent Matthäus to cover Maradona, thinking that with Maradona out of the equation, West Germany would coast to an easy win, even at the cost of taking Matthäus out of the equation too. He had to revert actions, freeing Matthäus of his warden role, after Argentina got a commanding 2-goal advantage. And, man! Burruchaga showed a big pair of balls when scoring the winning goal! Running against Schumacher, who nearly killed (no exaggeration) Battiston on a similar play 4 years before, requires a level of courage not found on a "very average" player
Main beef is about the argentina - brazil rivalry Pretty hard to accept a player from the other country being better than one from yours without looking like a traitor
Hey, patriotism always make people have a sense of 'pride' for their home-country players. I'm not joking if one man willing to kill someone for doing an own-goal in WC. Or make racist remarks on a best player from France during the big matches. Even bigger if you include those country.
Yeah, that's one big reason Neymar is considered a big flop in Brazil even having a great carrer. He's contemporary to Messi, who's undeniable and Brazil has nothing to counter besides the laurels makes Brazil feel alienated that the only one who was able to deny him was a portuguese.
I think most Brazilians have no idea the effect Pele had on people far away from Brazil. In his prime every kid in Africa wanted just to be Pele. Without him, soccer has no meaning at all. He is the father and soccer is just his little kid.
Another thing I feel it should be mentioned is that Brazil and Argentina are football (soccer) rivals by our nature, we're neighbours, we kinda like each other but when it comes to football it's pure war
Maradona said that the best player in the world was Jorge "El Mágico" González. Pelé couldn't stop stroking his own ego. Maradona didn't care to be a wholesome role model. He showed his imperfections and flaws and that's why many people sympathized with him moreso than with Pelé. Diego was the antihero and one of the most human football stars.
I remember being in a hospital recovering from a surgery and when I woke up, Brazil secured qualification for the 2010 World Cup… In Argentina… Against Argentina… With Maradona as coach. I never saw the match. I just saw the highlights. And Maradona's face said it all. Edson Arantes do Nascimento wasn't that KIND of a person, but when playing soccer and turning on Pelé mode, he was simply unbeatable in his prime. Diego Armando Maradona was a brash, a rebel, but a maestro of maelstroms when it comes to soccer. I just hope Pelé and Maradona have a good conversation about their lives on earth while in heaven…

Pele had a good relationship with India. He often came to India to play friendlies as a guest ofc. He was ofc impeccable, but a guy stopped his penalty not once but twice. His name was Shivaji Ganguly (Not a well-known footballer ofc) who was my neighbor. He passed away yesterday
This. So much than an Argentine journalist, nicknamed Juvenal, wrote, after 1986 WC: "Maradona is more for Argentina than Pelé is from Brazil", in the sense that made a bigger difference.
I feel that this feeling that Maradona is "for the people" happens because Argentina didnt have any world class footballers from the time between Di stefano to Maradona (20 years), and from Maradona to Messi (15 years). Sure, you got Crespo, Batistuta and Redondo but they dont even come close to Romario, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos or other Brazilian players that came during those 35 years where Argentina lack unique talent.
@@gerardomalazdrewicz7514 one of the biggest myths that keeps being posted. Maradona joined a Argentina team full of all time great players that were defending champs going into 1982. Passarella is their greatest defender ever. Kempes was the previous Golden Boot winner. Fillol was Argentinas greatest ever keeper. None of these guys were on the downsides of their careers and Argentina didn't win it all.
I've shown clips of Maradona to people that knew nothing about soccer - and they are always mesmerized. Then I'll do the same with Pele - and if they're still awake after 3 minutes they ask me to find someone else like Maradona. Pele was rated by his inflated goal count in a different time in a league of much lesser quality. He was an athlete that had amazing players with him. Diego was alone in Argentina. A typical goal from Pele was getting a cross from one of his teammates and putting the ball in the net. Maradona's goals were dribbles from midfield where he would elude half the opposing squad one after the next before finally beating the goalie as well. Maradona revolutionized the game. There were things he did with the ball that no one could or would even think to do before him. Pele was a good athlete surrounded by other great athletes. He's not even the best Brazilian player. He's not even the best Brazilian player of his generation. He's a FIFA hype job and that's why when they didn't get the results they wanted in the online poll they moved the goal posts and made themselves the voters.

I was glad to see a video on Pele x Maradona but I have to say that it fails to really highlight one of the main reasons why this argument is so intense: the rivalry between Brazil x Argentina. There is no sweeter victory (other than a WC win, of course) than winning against Argentina and I am sure they feel similar. We are bound to compare our players since we are not only neighbors but the main football powerhouses of the Americas. That type of comparation is constant and it happens on every level, from this historical giants of football to relatively unknown new players facing each other in the Copas Libertadores or Sulamericana. Personally, I think this rivalry is amazing. I love to hate our dear hermanos. 🇧🇷🇦🇷❤
Y'all should do a beef history from Formula One. There's so many potential stories from the sport to choose from, but one involving the childhood friendship to huge split between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg could be entertaining.
The political aspect of this beef is kinda left out here. Maradona always clearly identified himself as a socialist and spoke out on injustices in Latin America. He was close to Fidel and other socialist leaders. Pele on the other hand kept a cleaner image, choosing not to tackle difficult topics which made him a more marketable figure. As far as I know Maradona did criticise him for that publicly. I don't think the "who was better" debate is particularly interesting, but saying Pele was the better person is too easy as well. Sure, Maradona was troubled but he was also willing to use his standing to speak out. Pele chose not to stick his neck out. In my view Maradona is the more interesting, more human character. Pele cultivated this godlike image. Maradona was always a bit more real
Pelé also had some... let's say "troubling" moments in his life. He had a child out of wedlock in 1964-ish, and refused to acknowlege his daughter, Sandra Regina, as his child, even after the DNA tests showed he was indeed the father. She passed away in 2006, and Pelé wasn't present in her funeral.
I don't think Pelé "refused" to talk about things, it's just that he had different views than Maradona. Maradona was a certified commie, while Pelé is more on the conservative side and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@libertines24 I don't think that is the case at all. Especially in Napoli he is still beloved, they named their Stadium after him recently. Many other European Football fans look up to him as well. I just think that his politics are part of the reason he wasn't popular with FIFA or advertisers.
I am glad that it ended on good terms. Because it would have been really horrible if the last things those 2 said to each other were horrible. May Pele have good health and may El Diego rest in peace. Two of the greatest to ever do it.
They already did that, the Kun Aguero one. Maybe it need to restart from the Zidane's best goal on Champions League final. Or Colombian Soccer Tragedy in 1994.

The Brazilian Govt also didn’t let players leave which isn’t Pelé’s fault. They didn’t let Garrincha go to Juventus either
There’s no real beef it’s all speculation
The best player of all time is Messi by so long of a distance vs whoever you choose to put in 2nd place that it's not fair to other people to be compared to him.
Using number of World Cups won to determine who is "better" means Antoine Griezmann is better than Messi? Olivier Giroud? André Schürrle? David Villa? Luca Toni? GTFO lol
Football isn't tennis.

Would 7-1 be considered a “The Worst” episode given how Brazil coined two entire terms to describe it?
Yes.
I'm actually shocked they haven't done it yet to be honest

@@gerardomalazdrewicz7514 Absolutely right but I take the Argentine system. Brazil has always been loosy goose defending and that’s the edge for me
Yep, as an avid futbol fan, this is the first time I've heard that 86 team be called average. Lol.

Main beef is about the argentina - brazil rivalry
Pretty hard to accept a player from the other country being better than one from yours without looking like a traitor
El Diego carried not only his squad but his entire country to the world cup.
While the video is good I think it didn't mention enough how strong the Argentina v Brasil rivalry is. That seasoned this beef quite a bit
Descanse em paz rei, Pele. Continue resting in peace, el Pibe d'oro. Legends don't die, they simply ascend to higher glory.
Both legends are now playing in heaven
And the referee is Nelson Mandela.
I think Pele was the greatest ever. But in Brazil there is a saying coined by the infamous Romario: "With his mouth closed, he's a poet."
I think most Brazilians have no idea the effect Pele had on people far away from Brazil. In his prime every kid in Africa wanted just to be Pele. For the populace in large Pele was on mythological par with the likes of the Greek gods like Zeus. His name was synonymous with lightening, tornedo or hurricane. He was the mega force, the atomic bomb of soccer. To Africans when someone mentions Pele there is only one thing that comes to mind BRAZIL and when someone mentions Brazil, there is only one name that comes to mind PELE! Brazil=Pele and Pele=Brazil. Period! He is the first and last Brazilian to put Brazil right on the world map. Because of Pele Africans till now LOVE and root for the Brazilian team. He engraved the Brazilian yellow jersey and the legendary number 10 on every non Brazilian man, woman and child. On every African country sport radio broadcasts, there was only megastar that controlled the air waves, Pele!. Legend has it that people used to kiss the ground he walked on. I can go on and on about his legends. The words "GOAT" or "King of soccer" don't do any justice to him. He was bigger than the game itself. He overshadows the entire game. Without him, soccer has no meaning at all. He is the father and soccer is just his little kid.
Another thing I feel it should be mentioned is that Brazil and Argentina are football (soccer) rivals by our nature, we're neighbours, we kinda like each other but when it comes to football it's pure war
May they both rest in paradise 🙏🏼
Thank you for clarifying what "nutted" meant in the context. I thought Pele had an entire world-class skillset I'd never heard about for a moment.
I don’t blame Pelé because he played at a time when football was very violent and defenders used to brutalise him.
Now they're both gone. 2 years ago it was Maradona and now Pele. Rest in Heaven to the 2 GOAT legends on football/soccer. 🙏

Fillol was Argentinas greatest ever keeper. None of these guys were on the downsides of their careers and Argentina didn't win it all.
Maradonas popularity comes from that he scored the most famous and infamous goal of the century in 1 match
I was just here to see if they covered the "Pele debuto con un pibe" quote
He's a FIFA hype job and that's why when they didn't get the results they wanted in the online poll they moved the goal posts and made themselves the voters.
maradona is clear
Like score a goat with his hand 🤣 pele clears 3 world cups 7 ballon de or. Destroyed all European clubs didn’t have to take peds and finally wasn’t a pedo. Goat pele🐐
Pele revolutionised football and made it global even when there was no tv coverage. During Pele era video coverage was still evolving that why it looks dull and during Diego era video coverage was now on colour. Just like saying sci-fi movies of 2022 has more interest to the audience to sci-fi of 1990.
Pele made the #10 jersey the iconic number wore by the best player in the team.
About playing in a lesser league during Pele's era south America countries were dominating football
If the best of south American players like Messi, Neymar, Anderson, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Aguero, Maradona were all playing in their countries league will u call it a lesser league, during Pele era the best south American players played south American league.
Pele revolutionised football globally while Maradona modernized it globally

I knew this video wouldn’t get too into the politics but it’s the reason why maradona isn’t as respected in the west
@@libertines24 It's also one of the reasons why Maradona got a lot of respect in Europe from people on the left.
