No, you're pretty much right. I really feel like it never got proper credit for just HOW romantic and great this moment is. Like, people always talk about the 'Say Anything' scene with John Cusack holding up the Boombox with In Your Eyes playing. The only thing that scene has on this one is Cusack's incredibly pretty face. Otherwise, this about a hundred times more romantic and less creepy than anything in that film
This is honestly one of the most heartfelt realistic love scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie... Maggie and Will have awesome chemistry. Harold’s eyebrows raise in shy fear right before she grabs his face, he’s surprised and overwhelmed at first, but then just returns her unleashed passion in his own Harold way. It’s so cute how he’s coming out of his shell and finally wins over the woman he pined for from the beginning just by being his true self. This film made me realize how great Will Ferrell really is, his approach to this awesome character is just so natural and good. Thank you casting director, whoever you are, lol.
"Whole Wide World" is a song written by English rock singer-songwriter Eric Goulden, better known as Wreckless Eric. Goulden wrote the song in May 1974, and recorded it in 1977. Have a listen!
When this movie came out I was 10..and I saw it in a movie theater..and now I always want to narrate my life in my head with my own words and this little voice I created..and this movie has made me believe in true love and fait..I watch this movie to remind myself of how cool I actually am to myself...Not many people have seen this movie, glad I saw it.
The scene before this was awesome"I want you" I mean when a person knows he's going to die soon, he's got nothing to lose. Just go for it! Harold Crick was my hero at that particular moment😃
A truly heartwarming screenplay, brilliant acting, and direction; Stranger than fiction is thoughtful and terrifically intimate, tugging at the mind's strings in one of a kind way. Truly commedable movie!
I just came across this movie on Amazon Prime tonight. Not sure how I've never heard of it?? Everything about it is wonderful - from the performances, to the production design, to the premise, to THIS SCENE. Thanks for posting so I could watch it again and again
So very, very touching and romantic. Brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. Really brings something from deep within my being that speaks of the lost and lonesome soul yearning to be the person that they are not allowing theirself to be. Suddenly, grasping and straining for their chance by doing the very thing they fear the most.....reaching deep inside and taking a leap of faith. Thanks Will for bring this moment that inspires us.
Also, the cutest thing happened just before this. She's a baker, and he gave her flours. (like flowers but... Flour... Because she's a baker) AND IT MELTED MY HEART.
You have no idea how many times I've watched this movie and have seen that scene and you just blew my mind! When he said flowers I just assumed they were flowers that you plant while still in the biodegradable bag. WOW! I feel kinda dumb but I also want to go watch it again to try to see if there was anything else I've been missing. Awesome job! Thanks!
This is actually a fantastic movie, a very honest rendition of a great, simple song and Ferrell actually sings AND plays it! Even more props, did I mention this is a great movie?
I'd have never expected to see Will Ferrell in such a movie. 5/7 :D Good song..romantic scene..good acting x Will Ferrel record a full version of this song, please!!!!
that saved him (the watch, that which was a multilayered, profound metaphor throughout the film for the way in which we perceive and thus live our lives, time over mortality, which is the biggest theme in literature of course)
don't control your fate" but later "live your life" and his choice to do so) and perhaps more importantly the humanity, self-awareness and coexistent free will and fate of the author not able to bring herself to do it, as she says, "that's the kind of person you want to keep alive, isn't it?" this is what makes the entire blanketed story beautiful - thus stranger than fiction, thus adding the predictable but beautiful twist, added to the fact that it was the shard of glass from his watch
Well this song is also in the last episode of the widow (Kate Beckinsale’s amazon prime show) at the start so I’m guessing he’s getting some royalties. It’s actually a pretty epic sequence.
I never got to make on of these adorable comments, but here goes. I have finally caught the guy I almost lost. It took of 2 1/2 years, but we are finally together. So when we were watching this together, and I was singing it under my breathe to him. So when he kissed me and pulled me close he said. "Thanks for not living in the Bahamas...." It was beautiful
I hate how people don't like when actors like Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler do non-comedic roles. Movies like Stranger than Fiction, The Truman Show and Punch Drunk Love were great. Actors SHOULD have range.
milliniumstylz Came to the replies to say that but you beat me to it. Robin Williams in Dead Poet Society. Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I adore comedians in less comedic roles. There's something really humbling about it. Perhaps because they always play really stupid roles, and to see them play some human is... nice.
I love this film... and this scene is EVERYTHING... the only complaint? ... you don't just pick up a guitar that has been sitting around and have it tuned for ja. But for the movie?... perfect angles and editing choices and performances for the actors.
Time for a confession: I have never seen this movie. Nope, not once...not even 5min of it.. ..but I have loved this song since I first heard it on a 'cut-out' LP I found at the local mall in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1982 for $1.50
I guarantee that you put more thought into your comments than he did for this entire movie. He's a fool who a casting agent saw something in and they were dead on. Brilliant movie.
@Rachel Boyle When I was a young boy My mama said to me There's only one girl in the world for you And she probably lives in Tahiti I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world Just to find her Or maybe she's in the Bahamas Where the Carribean sea is blue Weeping in a tropical moonlit night Because nobody's told her 'bout you I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world Just to find her I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world Find out where they hide her
it was so beautiful that i had to clean out my ears to understand the true sound and then it took me about 3inutes to clean my ears so that the time it was done i didnt listen to anything. now im just mad because i missed it and wanted to see it i just chundered
When i saw this scene it just reminded me of old school romance. A boys attempt to woo a girl through song. :( nowadays its a boys attempting to woo girls through Facebook profile pictures and stupid updates. :( to be a romantic in this time period is like being like being a dust particle floating in space "No one cares about you".
Actually, the only films I absolutely loved Jim Carrey and thanks to which I think he's a great actor are Eternal Sunshine/Man on the Moon/Truman Show.As with W.Ferell Everything must go and this film.He aced it!The problem is,people will expect slapstick and get emotions. Not everyone is in the mood for that, so they slam it.I must say it happened to me with Punch Drunk Love-I found Sandler boring because I had gotten used to his silly characters.I guess I'll have to watch that again.
I'm guessing this would have fed Wreckless Eric's piggy bank. I heard he gave up music for a while and was working as a house painter at some point in the 80's.
i love this movie and this scene. i couldnt help that either the B or G string was slightly out of tune. i couldnt help but mention this. But little did i know it didnt matter. and so it was, still sweetly played and sung.
McGeneral: i have to disagree. the whole idea was that the story within... i.e., the original book being written would have been a masterpiece of literature if he died, which totally flips it, making it both a tragedy (the tragedy is the book suffered) but moreover a beautiful tale of redemption and a brilliant look at mortality, illustrating BOTH the main character's self-awareness, humanity and coesistent free will and fate ("I had no choice," and hoffman's earlier comment "you don't
this was such a brilliant movie that did not get the respect it deserved.
💯
I so agree!...it's brilliant!...
Agree
True...
Is it just me or is this one of the most romantic film scenes ever?
it is not just you :)

Literally makes my whole heart skip a beat every time I watch this scene
Yes! Especially when he brought her flours!
it is, for sure. so beautiful.
My favourite scene from my favourite Will Ferrell movie. If anyone wants proof that Will can act in more than just slapstick comedy, look no further.
I like it when he does slapstick comedy though
Yeah, nowadays his slapstick comedy style starts to feel old. He was very good in Everything Must Go though. It was one of his more serious roles.
Easily one of the best movies ever made. A masterpiece.
This is honestly one of the most heartfelt realistic love scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie... Maggie and Will have awesome chemistry. Ha ha! the classic two chord rock song. Even I learned to play that one!
So very, very touching and romantic. Brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. I’m happy I’m not the only one who loves this song & movie!!
Pure Awesomeness, As a young filmmaker i love looking at scenes with alot of chemistry and all i can say is omgg the editing is dynamic
This is so great. I remember when I first saw this movie and this scene came on, I freaked out. LOVE this song.
This song makes me so happy, but makes me remember someone who was very special, i remember he show me this movie. It's been a long time...

loved this song since 1980, like Will Ferrell a bunch too. This is gold.
Still the best cover till this day

this movie is perfect
Batman never got to kiss her like this lmao
This scene is PURE awesomeness.
This is in my top 3 movies of all time. Amazing, love it!
I would purchase an album of Will Ferrel singing
I love this movie and this is one of my favorite scenes from any movie!

Such a romantic scene. Absolutely love it!

One of the greatest scenes in the movie!
I LOVE THIS SCENE!!!
I wish Will Ferrell did more movies like this. Stuff where he's more pitiful-funny, instead of over-the-top funny.
Movie kicked ass
This movie was way better than I had expected! Great scene!!
Such an underrated movie. Beautiful.

Love this movie and this part!
The music in this movie is a bonus to one of my all-time favorite films. The a Capella song "Love You" at the end is perfect!
Hope Wreckless Eric at last made money out of his great tunes as a result of this
Well this song is also in the last episode of the widow (Kate Beckinsale’s amazon prime show) at the start so I’m guessing he’s getting some royalties. It’s actually a pretty epic sequence.
Ha had no idea Restless Eric's music reached over to the US!
I love this movie and you have made me think about it in a whole new way.
