I’m an Oilers fan and the sweep was a huge bummer but that avalanche team deserves it. They work so hard on both sides of the ice. I wish Mcdavid and Draisaitl deserve a cup but the whole avalanche team were trying just as hard. 2 players can’t beat a whole team. That’s the problem with the Oilers. ( Other than our goaltending problem). We can’t rely on our two star players we need a whole hockey team. But there are players that are getting better every day, like Hyman and Nugent Hopkins so look out 2023. The Oilers are coming for that cup. But the avalanche deserved the win.
As an Avs fan, I look forward to doing this series again next year! Kane controversy aside it was a better series than the 4 game span indicates. I certainly applaud daisaitl for his toughness!
Can we get a honourable mention for Makar? 4 times a defenseman in the NHL Playoffs has gotten 9+ points in a 4 game sweep. Makar has 2 of them. This year. That is a hat pick for sure.
im not sure if this is a hat pick but this is just a really cool fact, the avs have beaten their 2009 draft picks in the same order and round the Avs drafted them. 1st round for avs 2009: Matt Duchene - beaten round 1 by avs 2022 2nd round for avs 2009: Ryan O'Reily - beaten round 2 by avs 2022 3rd round for avs 2009: Tyson Barrie - beaten round 3 by avs 2022 The only thing is the avs didnt have a round 4 pick that year so lets hope its not a bad omen.
Someone explained it why it wasn't highstick during the OT goal. If it went in the net/goal, then the crossbar would have been the reference point. But it didn't went into the net, so the shoulder of the player became the reference point to determing if it was an highstick.
I was confused as well, Steve and the game announcers were all talking about if the puck touched the stick above the crossbar, but it did not go in the net directly from that touch. So as you say, the reference point is the shoulder. Interesting though, if you slow down the playback, at around 12:15 you can see the puck above Lekonen's left shoulder.
@@cybore213 -- Yes, but when you see the puck there, it hasn't yet touched the stick, and it disappears into Lehkonen's body. When it appears on the other side, it's clearly lower than his shoulder, but we don't have any angle that really shows the stick contacting the puck from an angle where you can determine the height of the puck off the ice. I think that because the on-ice call is good goal, and there's no way to prove it was a high stick before it got there, they wouldn't have overturned it any way. You have to actually show that the puck was hit too high, and from all the angles we have, it doesn't show that. Maybe Toronto has some other angles where they could see for sure, but my guess is it was too inconclusive to overturn the call.
@@peterpike True, from that angle we cannot see the puck hit the stick. As you say, to overturn the call on the ice you need conclusive evidence. One more thing I just thought of, a high touch will be waved off if the puck is touched by an opposing player, and the puck clearly hit Smith.
@@cybore213 his shoulder position while leaning and reaching isnt what is counted though, its his standing shoulder position which makes it even harder to call
It used to be a rule that high stick was the crossbar when scoring OR creating an immediate scoring opportunity. So yes, in this case it is the crossbar. Or is it anymore? I could not find any rule about that anywhere, so maybe it has changed. Previously if you tip the puck higher than crossbar, goalie gives an rebound and someone scored, it was not a goal because that high stick made it an immediate scoring opportunity. In gameplay high stick is waved off if opponent touched the puck but it did not apply to goalie making a save. Maybe that has changed? Could not find any written rule. Maybe it was just an rules interpretation.
Yes he produces and defended well, but comparing to other plays in that series his goals werent like super highlight reel goals even tho they were very important.
Francouiz shows us it is a good idea to not start with the same goalie throughout the playoffs, give the main goalie a break, and give the backup some time on the ice. You've hired a goaltender not a bench warmer.
Even the announcers don't know the rules. That doesn't have to be below the crossbar because it wasn't a goal. It was below his shoulders. When it's not a goal, it's the player's shoulders. Like it is in USA hockey rules for all high-sticking plays. So, if the puck would've went in on the "high stick", it wouldn't have counted. But, because it didn't go in, the play can continue because it wasn't above his shoulders. So in reality, it would've been better for the Oilers if the puck would've just went right in on the deflection. Because it was blatantly over the crossbar but it doesn't matter because it didn't go in.
Just a side note, I've complained about the ESPN/TNT crew, but when the call was happening live on the US broadcast (forgot which channel it was) they were specifically commenting about the shoulder vs crossbar difference in this case. I'm not implying that you were saying none of the announcers knew that, just clarifying and giving a rare bit of praise to the US feed.
@@alu.304 it can be hard to know/remember that in the moment, but much easier when you take your time thinking about it after the game like we see here.
As a Habs fan I'm so glad to see Lehky doing well with the avs, hopefully he can keep the trend of Habs being traded to the avs then winning cups for them, he deserves it.
Palat is my favourite player and definitely deserves the spot on the line he is on but it also the chemistry with kuch from playing with him his entire career helps
I don't know why there was so much concern over the alleged high stick. It hit Lehkonen's stick at or around shoulder height but Smith made the save from that deflection (right pad) and then Lehky cashed in the rebound. Had the puck gone from Lehkonen's stick to another Avalanche player (or even if he corralled the puck without Smith making a save), then the play could be called dead, but, much like grabbing the puck out of mid-air and putting it on your stick blade is not a hand pass, this was a perfectly cromulent goal. Had it deflected in from Makar's initial shot, then an argument can be made for disallowing. Let's cherish the rare instances where the refs (and the monkeys in the control room) got it right. Good goal.
No, because the puck is deflected off Smith into Lehkonen, if it's above the shoulder, it will still be whistled down as a high-stick. It's only when the puck is batted by Smith into an Avs player, the high-stick call will be washed out. In this case, it's just the evidence is too inconclusive to overturn the call.
@@jkliao6486 We'll have to agree to disagree. Smith was lined up on the puck from Makar's original shot. Lehkonen deflected it down and the puck hit Smith's right pad thus causing a rebound. Per rule 80, the high stick contact (if the stick was above the shoulder) is washed out by the pad save and Lehkonen is free to shoot the rebound into the net. The only thing that is unclear is whether contact is considered above where Lehkonen's shoulders should be or where they are as he's leaning forward. Either way, per rule 80, Smith's save on the deflection cancels out the high stick contact.
@@HotBranch I don't see where the rule says rebound (deflection) off a goalie is considered a wash-out condition for the high-stick. But either way, the refs made the right call.
@@jkliao6486 Rule 80.1 (i) in the official rules here: cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/assets/binary/326142322/binary-file/file.pdf "When a puck has been contacted by a high stick, the play shall be permitted to continue, provided that: (i) the puck has been batted to an opponent (when a player bats the puck to an opponent, the Referee shall give the “washout” signal immediately. Otherwise, he will stop the play)." Admitedly, the time between the high stick contact, Smith making the save, and the goal being scored is barely long enough for the ref to move his arms at all.
The initial shot from Makar did not contact Smith first, he was reaching for it with his glove, but it was deflected before he could snag it and that deflection went to his right pad.
The Avs game gave us another odd rule that I never knew. Only deflected goals have to be lower than the cross bar, every other deflection has to be below the shoulders.
Or you know nothing about the rule book again. During normal play, it has always been below the shoulder. Otherwise, it's called a puck played with a high stick. Maybe learn the rule book before commenting here full of hatred and saltiness, you might not make yourself a laughing stock that way.
Hatred and saltiness? Is that really what you read? I'm a colorado native so I can't be happier right now, actually 4 more wins would make me happier. I just thought anything tipped on goal had to be below the cross bar. I don't give a F who's laughing it's a complex game that even the NHL doesn't know their own rules.
I was really hoping that Smith Would have made that final save with the stick so we had a chance to visit the Paddle Save Emporium again. It’s been a while.
The hilarity of Steve calling that goal, not even taking another breath as he questions himself and basically does a one man therapy session over the ensuing next few minutes
Isn't the rule, you can play at shoulder level but for goals it needs to be below the crossbar. If he would've scored with the tip-in, it wouldn't have counted.
Yes. I actually just left a comment then scrolled down to see if anyone else understood why that was a good goal. When it's not a goal, it's the shoulders. When it's a goal, it's the crossbar. Which, I think is a stupid rule. Just pick one. Like USA Hockey. It's just the shoulders. Period. However, no matter how stupid the rule is, they won based on the current rules. And, I just love that once again, no Canadian team can win The Cup. Now, I don't really care who wins. I guess maybe The Lightning. If they lose, I guess The Aves.

Well Steeeeeeeve! As Finnish guy that has little to nothing invested in these games, I need point out I wish Finals go to 7games. But I also wish Avalanche wins the Cup under Tampa Bay's crasp. It's just that TB has won Cup so many times that it's almost like seasons in Formula 1, they were boring when Hamilton, or Vettel had their housebreaking and won it all. Granted that Hamilton still has that streak going. Eventho Redbull has won pretty much the full season start. And Verstappen is in lead with Championship points. Do not know by how many points tho. Haven't followed that because even I was exited for you Steve. I really thought that Leaf's would of won the 1st series. It would of been an epic win and elimination of TB.
Max is leading the championship with 175 points compared to his teammate Checo in second place with 129, so he has a 46 point lead. 3rd place is Leclerc with 126. Hamilton is in 6th with just 77 points, behind his teammate (George Russell, 111) and Carlos Sainz (102). Red Bull is in first with 304 points compared to 228 for Ferrari and 188 for Mercedes.
A user from Canada says the name Lehkonen is of Finnish origin and means "Small monkey from north". Lehko mean dunno nen is end many surnames, but doesnt mean clutch, kytkin is clutch, should be kytkinen then
You brought it up so... NO... high sticking would have been above the shoulders being as the puck didn't go straight in....even if it had gone straight in, stick was right at cross bar level and would've counted anyway.... you'd think they'd put a camera that sees the whole ice at cross bar level right behind the net... even more curious though... they now track the puck right?... speed and on replays they have a tracer so why cant they tell how high off the ice the puck is?....
Wait what? Lehkonen in Finnish means Clutch? Not even close. Kytkin is the word for Clutch you refer in cars. I'm 43yrs old Finnish guy, never heard that saying. It could be that he's been named by former teammates by his Clutch like goals he makes or brakes teams advances in playoffs. That is most likely what happened. Ik that Artturi had some good years in Finnish teams. Did not follow him that intently that I'd know his story behind that nickname.

( Other than our goaltending problem). We can’t rely on our two star players we need a whole hockey team. But there are players that are getting better every day, like Hyman and Nugent Hopkins so look out 2023. The Oilers are coming for that cup. But the avalanche deserved the win.
TBH, Smith did pretty well against a Team rolling 4 Lines. Can't blame him for the Series loss. His Defense didn't help him very much🤷♂️
As an Avs fan, I look forward to doing this series again next year!
1st round for avs 2009: Matt Duchene - beaten round 1 by avs 2022
2nd round for avs 2009: Ryan O'Reily - beaten round 2 by avs 2022
3rd round for avs 2009: Tyson Barrie - beaten round 3 by avs 2022
The only thing is the avs didnt have a round 4 pick that year so lets hope its not a bad omen.
65 points but they went 8-8 😂
Nothing about Makar? He was the star of the series IMHO.
Yes he produces and defended well, but comparing to other plays in that series his goals werent like super highlight reel goals even tho they were very important.
Also didn't realize Tim Burton was an Oil fan! @9:51
Is that who that is? Lol, looks like he got electrocuted.
and I thought that was the piano man Billy Joel :D
@@tonycaniggia haha
@@mightymacaque haha classic Tim Burton look...i mean, it probably ISN'T him but it's very close
Francouiz shows us it is a good idea to not start with the same goalie throughout the playoffs, give the main goalie a break, and give the backup some time on the ice. You've hired a goaltender not a bench warmer.
Love the vids Steve! LETS GO AVS!! ❤️
Makar has to be the playoff MVP so far
How many points does Cale Makar need in a game to make it? 5 is not enough? ;-)
@@jonmendelson1104 I didn't watch the game so I was just commenting on the video.
Koho gets just about every call wrong is his opinion analysis 🤦♂️
@@alu.304 it can be hard to know/remember that in the moment, but much easier when you take your time thinking about it after the game like we see here.
There was an angle not in this video that looked to me like his stick was below the crossbar and his shoulders. So good either way
What, no Makar in your hat picks?
Steve: I'm not a math guy.
*gets math question correct*
Also Steve: Mikko lehtonen
*turns out Steve is not an English guy*
You mean turns out he isnt a finnish guy :D
Rangers Lightning series is literally just a battle of the two best goalies in the playoffs
Thanks for the entertainment, Steve. Love it👊🏻
The avs are the best litterally
Steve has all the ingredients to his unique awesome hockey sauce!!
Unbelievable series!
I actually saw producer Drew!! Thought he wasn't real for a long time. Congratulations, Drew on your team to the Stanley Cup Finals!
No hat picks this week?
Don’t worry steve about messing up on the Lehkonen goal call. Your brain was just processing the idea of being blown away.
@@jkliao6486 Rule 80.1 (i) in the official rules here: cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/assets/binary/326142322/binary-file/file.pdf
"When a puck has been contacted by a high stick, the play shall be permitted to continue, provided that:
(i) the puck has been batted to an opponent (when a player bats the puck to an opponent, the Referee shall give the “washout” signal immediately. Otherwise, he will stop the play)."
Admitedly, the time between the high stick contact, Smith making the save, and the goal being scored is barely long enough for the ref to move his arms at all.
@@grrob51 You are the only one who doesn't know sh*t about rules and because you don't even bother to learn a bit more, you just blame on the league.
@@jkliao6486 bro your actually a clown lol
I was really hoping that Smith Would have made that final save with the stick so we had a chance to visit the Paddle Save Emporium again. It’s been a while.

The hilarity of Steve calling that goal, not even taking another breath as he questions himself and basically does a one man therapy session over the ensuing next few minutes
i love the producer drew fancam in there
@1:52 that's a hat pick for the defense leaning just enough stick on Stammer's, no elevation, no goal.
News flash: Avs win the West in a sweep!
Rangers & Lightning: Winner gets the Best In The West?! #DangIt

Steve Dangle is like the George Costanza of hockey.
No mention of Makar’s 5 point night?! GO AVS GO!
That was the best call ever.
Kucherov’s breakaway is going to be on next week’s hat picks. I can feel it.
Isn't the rule, you can play at shoulder level but for goals it needs to be below the crossbar. If he would've scored with the tip-in, it wouldn't have counted.
Yes. If it's not a goal, it's shoulder-high that matters. If it's a goal, it has to be beneath the crossbar.

I crocheted a hat while I watched this hat picks video
Question: Why did they review the Lehkonen goal? It's not high stick if Oilers player (Smith) touch first. Am I right or have the rules changed?
The refs probably werent sure if it was a high stick because it happened so fast they just wanted to be 100% sure
and lehkonen did it on over time for avalanche 20 seconds before he did it for montreal! GO AVS GO. GO AVS GO. 💜💙
Steve, which dictionary did you use to translate Lehkonen? Or how did you end up translating Lehkonen to clutch? 🤔Just a friendly Finn here to tell you that Lehkonen doesn't really mean anything in Finnish. Producer Drew you can add another dang-it to Steve's list of dang-its.😂
7 right hand catching goalies in the league right now....
i don't know who this Draisaitl guy is, but his body was broken for most of the series and he's out there making plays.
That one guy hailing in the thumbnail... Lmao
Nice series winner by mikko ;)
Not only did Smith make an insane save... he robbed Nichushkin of a hat trick.
Vasilevsky was a right-catching goalie but where he grew up, they didn't have full right options, so he had to switch.
It hit the other team first and he was first to regain control. It's the same rules as a hand pass.
Avs be like WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM?!?!
Was not expecting a Pete Weber reference in the comments but I'm here for it.
Avs will win the cup and trust me that duo you so speak of will have no chance against the Avs.
Oilers went 13 goals up and 22 down in 4 games. YIKES
Wasn't right. It´s Lehkonen, not Lekonen.
Still better than koho's dang it on the live broadcast.
Thanks Steve....Peace
If that was a high stick, then Blake Coleman didn't kick the puck in the net. Not even the playoffs can escape karma.
Mikko Lehtinen? Almost.
This dude's head gets bigger and bigger with each passing year. I'm not talking about ego...the actual size of his dome.
Why'd you say mikko Lehtonen?
I blame steve for Edmonton getting swept
Why would you do that when it's so easy to blame the Oilers fans for doing the wave during game 4 when they had a lead?
Leki is now like Williams or Cap clutch
Who wants Artturi Lehkonen to his team for next season?
Guys don't stop this video at 0:00 xD
Really hoping Justin Barron pans out, but damn I already miss Lehkonen
You can tell that there are only 2 series left and Steve is scraping the bottom of the barrel for Hat-Picks. Basically none of these are Hat-Picks.
high stick save bounces off the goalies pad. . . grabs the rebound and buries it
Did you say Lehkernin? Still not right 😆
He doesn't actually think Lehkonen means clutch. It's a phrase I've heard a decent amount of the times about different players.Their last name means clutch or awesome or something like that in their home country.
Mikko Dangle delvers again!
3:45 **cries in Blue Jackets**
No matter if Lehtinen, Lehtonen or Lehkonen…the h is NOT silent.
We in Finland do not waste letters. We pronounce them all, and every time it is the same pronounciation.
Artturi is finnish for Arthur.
It's a fair Mistake, next time just yell arturi rantanenen and even it out
Palat has been on fire. To me, this has been the best series, technically. I mean, Battle of Alberta was fun and ridiculous, but this is just poetry on ice with these two teams. Love watching it. Whoever wins better beat Avs 👍👍
