So much is said about how Nirvana turned the music scene on its head, but what these people forget is how bands like Janes and the Pixies were killing it in the late 80s. For so many years, I just assumed they were all 90s bands, and was quickly surprised when I found out how old their music actually was.
Soundgarden formed the same year as Jane’s Addiction. Both contributed to the change in music in their own way. Live both bands were incredible, Jane’s had a energy about them that I put in the level of Ministry, Primus, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and KMFDM of the early 1990’s,
HOLY SHIT. I was at this show!!!!! Halloween night 1997, one of the best nights of my life!! The show was sold out but I actually snuck into Hammerstein Ballroom when this punk kid pried open one of the side door,s and I got in right before security closed it again. So lucky! I can't believe I just found this footage. Thanks SO MUCH eXfirestarter2, you ROCK!!!
12 years later I'm just seeing your comment. I'll be watching all of the videos of the concert YOU SNUCK INTO!! Can I just say? YOU LUCKY SHIT!! I still can't believe I've never seen them in concert. I must have a defect. Damn!
Stacy Lake I had to be dragged/led out w 3 other girls bc chairs and bottles made it into an already insane pit. When I got home, I told my friend some dick threw chairs and he said "those were mine & I didn't get em back".
saw jane's live twice. out of the thousands of concerts, shows, and local bands i've seen, jane's is easily top 5. words can not describe how f'n awesome they are live.
Man this was the good ole days when MTV was airing great music & concerts. I remember viewing this at a New Orleans Bar when it originally aired back in 97. People were drunk, head banging & even some were moshing. It was a great moment. I missed those days. Whoever posted this & the "Stop" performance thanks for posting this.
These were the days..I worked at The Hammerstein 2 years as a house tech...the stories I could tell you OmG !!! These days are longgg gone....all the big studios in NYc are closed now....such a fukn shame
IMO this song is one of the finest examples of what I would call Hard Rock. Absolutely classic beat and rhythm to shake the ground. I still remember when I first saw the video back in the day on USA Network's SNUB tv. It was an instant smash.
I discovered this concert in the summer of 2014. I was getting ready to to drive back home after a week long vacation at a relatives house out-of-state, and saw "Jane's Addiction Live at Hammerstein Ballroom" while scrolling through the TV guide. I was intrigued and decided to give it a shot. I had heard Jane Says on the radio before, but this exposed me to a totally different side of JA. Been in love with them ever since. Every Halloween, I watch this concert
Saw them when they first released Nothing Shocking at Bogarts in Cincinnati, OH. They opened with this song. To this day, it's one of the best concerts I have been to bar none.
I watch this video all the time...especially when I'm drunk and it takes me to that higher level of consciousness. This is so fucking pure and good! Nothing beats this crap, this is the best of the best!!
Totally agree, Jane's live have even more energy than on record. It's the whole performance that counts, and Jane's are dishing it out in spades here :-)
I am 56 yrs of age, and accomplished musician in the day myself....I have seen most major groups from Airplane to Hendrix to Zappa....But the three times I have seen Janes...they may be the BEST live performance I have seen..... Nice post!!
You watch this and float back to the memories 90s, then it jumps to a frickin Samsung commercial and it shocks you back into the soulless reality of 2020.
Yet again, I haven't listened to this song in month's, and upon hearing look perry scream and the bass and guitar and drum's that familar blissfull chill crawl's down my spine.
the 1st min. of this is video is an onion of WTF? each layer peeling back. from Perry's hair, to his Flea, to remembering Dave found the look of a Von Dutch hat tangled in an Ed Hardy shirt in 1985 and still hasn't changed, to Dave's tone, to the fact that for 1997, this is a decent ass recording.
Such an AWESOME band! After 20 years I finally got to see them last week. Wish I had seen them earlier but shows were cancelled and break ups did not help. Hope to get another chance to see them live as they have been one of my favorite bands.
What a wonderful show. It was a union of an amazing band and crowd. Once they came on there was that bond and it didn't let go until the end, such a rarity found in shows. By some stroke of luck I ended up on the credits of this dvd walking into the show. I saw them during the NIN/JA tour and just this past Saturday in Philly. Perry's voice has unfortunately faded quite a bit but still was able to make a memorable show. The band are still insanely tight!!
I wanted to go to the NIN/JA concert in Cleveland so bad, but forget why I didn't. It would've been the second time seeing Trent and first seeing Dave and Perry.
This live version surpasses any studio version, unbelievable!!! Is it the ballroom? What do you think? I never get tired of it! Live forever Janes Addiction Mountain song! That it ranks up there among/ along with Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven"!!!!!
sick song and performance...the only bass player that has played with them since eric avery left the band that can make the music sound just as beautiful and pure as when they made the first three records...i wish i was at this show.
One of the best shows I ever witnessed... Perry makes sure every body in the house is in full participation. I dropped out of college to be there with giant hand-made butterfly wings and a fake ticket on Halloween. Totally worth it! I can't believe they let me in. The fire marshal ended up closing the doors, because Hammerstein was way over capacity. That place was going off. No energy like Jane's energy. So sexual and vibrant!
so dedicated to his lyrics. which is why he's great. listen to the music. simple as far as playing goes, nothing too special until the vocals come in. what a band.
A true original..Perry one of only a handful of front men that were total originals. But Perry is so far out that nobody has copied him. I like to say Perry performed rituals not just a song.
@Carpx11 band marched through the crowd (that's right, no bodyguards) and they climbed onto a small island stage with a bunch of drums. That's where they played Jane Says. He was able to make eye contact with everyone on the low balcony (I know bc that's where I was standing, about 15 feet away), and even sang Classic Girl to a random girl who would have been stuck in back.
I saw Jane’s Addiction at UCLA at the Ackerman building. It wasn’t in the ballroom, it was in the room where the Taco Bell is now. I think it was 1987? Free show. I stood right in front of them. They are one of those bands that really sounded great live. I remember Perry had on long green gloves. I think.
perry farrell is amazing at the show i went to a few days ago he tore his calf muscle during the first song but went on to perform the entire concert with the same energy as ever it was amazing
Is it? I mean, Guitar Hero and Rock Band introduced me to a whole genre of music and have changed my tastes permanently. There are different ways of finding out about a band, be it word of mouth or TV. Because it's a game that celebrates good rock music, that makes it any less? Yeah, that's not stupid at all.
So much is said about how Nirvana turned the music scene on its head, but what these people forget is how bands like Janes and the Pixies were killing it in the late 80s. For so many years, I just assumed they were all 90s bands, and was quickly surprised when I found out how old their music actually was.
Nirvana suck and didn't do anything. Jane's paved that way..
Soundgarden formed the same year as Jane’s Addiction. Both contributed to the change in music in their own way. Live both bands were incredible, Jane’s had a energy about them that I put in the level of Ministry, Primus, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and KMFDM of the early 1990’s,
The chemistry between Dave and Flea is unbelieviable.
Takes one to know one
HOLY SHIT. I was at this show!!!!! Halloween night 1997, one of the best nights of my life!! nooooo seriously? Fuck...you are so lucky
one of my favorite songs by them at I dislocated my shoulder at this concert lol
Stacy Lake I had to be dragged/led out w 3 other girls bc chairs and bottles made it into an already insane pit. When I got home, I told my friend some dick threw chairs and he said "those were mine & I didn't get em back".
I still have scars on my bones from JA gigs
would be worth it.
that was a great moment in time
damn, I'm so jealous. it's fair to say it's one of the greatest shows in history.
Stephen Perkins is one of the most under-rated drummers in rock music. He knew how to hurt those "skins" and cymbals so beautifully.
11
he’s literally underrated
saw jane's live twice. out of the thousands of concerts, shows, and local bands i've seen, jane's is easily top 5. words can not describe how f'n awesome they are live.

I miss the early 90's badly - such a great time period for music.
This performance is pure electricity.
I was at the show with friends from Chicago. It was the first time I saw janes and they rocked!
this was probably, PROBABLY the best concert in the history of mankind.
These were the days..I worked at The Hammerstein 2 years as a house tech...the stories I could tell you OmG !!! These days are longgg gone....all the big studios in NYc are closed now....such a fukn shame
HINCH thanks to all the shitty rap, and pop music. Rockers know how to party
Hard to believe this album came out 23 years ago...so far ahead of its time and still is.
34 years now
IMO this song is one of the finest examples of what I would call Hard Rock.

I live right behind Bogarts and saw them there! Fantastic
Bands just don’t rock hard with SOUL like this anymore.
I watch this video all the time...especially when I'm drunk and it takes me to that higher level of consciousness. This is so fucking pure and good! Nothing beats this crap, this is the best of the best!!
+Matt Burns of course drunk bro Perry was
Try with some acid and weed bro!
Always loved this song, brings me back to simpler day's. Sooo good 😊
"Everybody has their own opinion."
Trent Purcell what about it
Totally agree, Jane's live have even more energy than on record. It's the whole performance that counts, and Jane's are dishing it out in spades here :-)
Still one of my top five concerts of all time
This song is pure electric energy.
The best band that ever lived.
I am 56 yrs of age, and accomplished musician in the day myself....I have seen most major groups from Airplane to Hendrix to Zappa....But the three times I have seen Janes...they may be the BEST live performance I have seen..... Nice post!!
He has a unique and distinctive voice
Jesus that is THE SHIT!! THEY ROCK LIVE.ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS I EVER SAW!!!! PERRY MY FAVE FREAK
Right, i also think this show happened on Halloween ;-) if you also watch Jane Says at the end Perry says Happy halloween ya'all
are you married ?
Linda Lemmons TROGGS ON STEROIDS !
You watch this and float back to the memories 90s, then it jumps to a frickin Samsung commercial and it shocks you back into the soulless reality of 2020.
This was the first time I watched this performance. I didn't know that Flea performed with them.
I was there for that show with my best friend at the time. And we got Sooooooo High, made the show even greater. Best Show Ever!!!!!
probably one of the best rythem sections of any band........ever !!!!!!
Yet again, I haven't listened to this song in month's, and upon hearing look perry scream and the bass and guitar and drum's that familar blissfull chill crawl's down my spine.
I used to play in a band that covered this song. Man was it fun to play!
the 1st min. of this is video is an onion of WTF? each layer peeling back. from Perry's hair, to his Flea, to remembering Dave found the look of a Von Dutch hat tangled in an Ed Hardy shirt in 1985 and still hasn't changed, to Dave's tone, to the fact that for 1997, this is a decent ass recording.

there were flowers and perfumes and fans...you smelt first then they smashed all your other senses... fantastic
Jane's Addiction is amazing. All others may bow!
Nothing today touches this
this is a little after my sweet spot in time, but amazing... listen to that bass line.. with Dave this combo is KILLER
Back when bands were bands and they.... Fu..... Rocked!!!
i know man nastagia
Apex of glam metal. This is real, and it's spectacular.
What a show!!!!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE performance by a band in their prime "LOVEIT"
Stephen's drums: "Holy Crap, here comes Stephen again! We're in for another long night!"
I could only hope to be half as good as he is. Well, one day.
What a wonderful show. It was a union of an amazing band and crowd. Once they came on there was that bond and it didn't let go until the end, such a rarity found in shows. By some stroke of luck I ended up on the credits of this dvd walking into the show.

Oh man do I have concert stories.... hahah.
I wanted to go to the NIN/JA concert in Cleveland so bad, but forget why I didn't. It would've been the second time seeing Trent and first seeing Dave and Perry.
FLEA?!
jaret massad yeah I thought that !!!
He filled in on this tour!
Wtf fuck flea !! Cool!
Remember a couple years before this, Navarro recorded an album and toured with RHCP.
Grande banda e grande musica.
Adoro a atitude de Perry .
brings me back to colledge..love this group(notice flea on bass!)
We’re the 90’s even a time of faishon judgement???? I miss this era
I was blessed with the experience of seeing Jane's Addiction open up for Iggy Pop. It was like a portal to beyond Utopia.
Perry pulled me up on stage at the astoria London around 1990. I was about 17 and It was mind blowing.
This live version surpasses any studio version, unbelievable!!! Is it the ballroom? What do you think? I never get tired of it! Live forever Janes Addiction Mountain song! That it ranks up there among/ along with Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven"!!!!!

Still sounds fresh, great to hear again, thanks for sharing :-)
Peace.
When they hit that D chord, it get's me every time...

Great version, thanks for the post.
One of the best shows I ever witnessed... Perry makes sure every body in the house is in full participation. Going to see them next week at Fiddler's Green in Denver with NIN. Can't freakin' wait for that!
A true original..Perry one of only a handful of front men that were total originals. But Perry is so far out that nobody has copied him. I like to say Perry performed rituals not just a song.

This song is dope.
