Freelance opportunist absolutely, 100 percent agree! 'Three days,' 'then she did' and 'of course' 3 fantastic songs that flowed into one another ..great album.

Love me some Jane's Addiction. Probably the best show I've ever been to. Tossed a joint on stage, Perry Ferrill and Dave Navarro both hit it, and after their set, Perry gave me his set list..
Rick the way you break down these songs, you are giving our ears targets to hone in on. So much of this can be missed without you pointing out these targets. Thanks!
To this day the one-two punch of “Up The Beach” and Ocean Size” on “Nothings Shocking” sends chills up and down my spine. JA created so many moments in just a few records. Here’s to 1 more JA record Perry!
@@tomalafleur8602Perry was always that guy. When the Jane’s were about to sign their record contract, Perry turned around to the others and announced that either they gave him the lions share of royalties, whether he was involved in writing the songs or not, or he was leaving the band and it was over. You have to remember that he was 10 years older than the rest of the band, and his father was a hard nosed businessman. For the others, who were just nowhere kids with raging drug habits and Jane’s Addiction was their only chance of escape, they had no choice but to agree. Perry knew this. Perry was always that guy.
Awesome - thanks Rick for showing all the layers that go into the finished product. Not as easy as it sounds. It's inspiring and intimidating at the same time!
At 50, hearing this after so many years makes me want to grab my skateboard and hit the quarter pipe again. Wishful thinking at this age ehh? I wouldn't last 15 seconds!
I am 44 and skate a 6 foot half pipe every weekend. Best shape of my life skating and lifting. Picked it backup at 40 super out of shape Collagen peptides!!!! Keto. Skate or die man your call : )
Interesting song choice to break down. Great record. Great band. This record was so textured, dreamy stream of consciousness, silly, ironic, introspective, deep and moody. And it rocked!
Man, yesterday i discovered this channel and since then i'm watching EVERY SINGLE VIDEO ! I love all of the bands you show in the videos, it is so good to learn more about the bands i already know Cheers from Brazil !
I kind of miss this funky rock from the late 80's and early 90's. Would love to see some Living Colour and Ugly Kid Joe music featured in this series. Been Caught Stealing is a great song by the way. I like very much Stop! as well.
Yeah, there was this mini scene of bands like Chili Peppers, Jane's, Living Colour, that combined elements of funk, rock, metal, even psychedelia, and it sort of got buried by grunge. Obviously some of the bands like RHCP continued to be successful but there weren't a lot of new bands coming along that sounded like that.
I love listening to Living Color. They had so much to say, and managed to say it is a great and original way. I would play their music for my students during chem labs. Between them and Bob Marley we often danced through lab experiments. (I still think that taking careful measurements is more accurate (or at least more fun) when you can dance through it. And when the conservative administrators were busy elsewhere NoFX was also added to the mix.
I LOVE everything about this song! This song encapsulates the vibe and attitude of the early 90's. It still sounds fresh 32 years later. Always turn the volume way up for this one!
I was hoping for Mountain Song or Jane Says, but this song really put Janes Addiction on the map. Dave Navarro’s guitar parts are cool, and that bass groove is awesome. Plus, the music video for this song is hilarious.
Steven Manning Jane Says: Fucking brilliant song - simple songwriting at it’s very best. Lyrically heartbreaking and the mantra of the band. The melodies are played on a percussion instrument! No doubt phenomenal to witness live - never myself had the pleasure though. 🤘🏻
I could be mistaken but I'm fairly sure Dave Navarro said in an interview some time ago that what is described here as acoustic guitar was unplugged electric guitar(s) mic'ed up.
Just need an electric with enough resonance, doesn't have to be a semi. See FOD by Green Day, the entire first 2/3 of the song is just him and his strat with the volume turned off.
LOVE Janes Addiction. This song was huge but I think other tracks of theirs define them a lot better. Thanks Rick!! Can't wait to watch this (working right now)
Hearing this song for the first time in over 20 years, I was surprised how the general sound, chords and groove reminded me of the happy Mondays. They were completely different bands at the time, but both so of their time I guess.
I love how you break each song down. The isolation of each part of the track. It’s helped me appreciate songs I’ve really never cared to hear! Great job!!!
His vocals are always doubled and chorused, so there's always a slight out-of-tune dissonance. I think that's the "wrong" you're hearing. They really pop in any mix.
Jane's Addiction, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili peppers, Offspring, those were the, I don't know if you'd call them grunge or alternative bands, that I liked and there wasn't much else out of the '90s that I liked. Jane's Addiction has such a unique sound and energy that set them apart that you had to like it.
My favorite Jane's Addiction song might be Ocean Size. Just how it kicks off the record with Up the beach. Up the beach is more anthemic an then "Three! Four!" hits you and Ocean Size starts pulling you in this groove! This tune gets me going everytime!
i've heard this song many times & love it, but didn't know who it was. fantastic song! the singer does have a unique & cool style of singing. thanx 4 sharing.
I was a freshman in college when this came out. It was mind blowing and really was different from everything else that was out at the time. It has certainly stood the test of time. It still sounds great.
Love hearing Perry's grunts in between vocal phrases in the second verse when they're soloed. Also never noticed that the lead and the double are slightly different on the first line of the second verse. Great content as always!
I can name tons of songs from FNM I love. Some of my favorites being "Zombie Eaters" , "Edge of the World", "The Real Thing", "Midlife Crisis" , "Kindergarten" , "Smaller and Smaller", "Crack Hitler", "Be Aggressive"

Rick Beato Rick my apologies if I came off rude. If it helps matters, your analysis helped me see that song in a new light. I still don't like it, but I respect the musicality of it. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for breaking that song down Rick. Many cool details that I could never quite put my finger on, but wow, you made it accessible. That's your gift!
Wow this one was great rick! Really liked the summation at the very end highlighting exactly what really makes the song great. Hearing those little samples alone would make me recognize this song.
Friggin love this band. Love the way even their name sounds when you say it. But the colour of their percussion (e.g. conga), beautiful rhythms, Perry’s penetrating tone, the musicality of the guitarists. The excitement and slightly exotic sound JA brought that other bands just never would have found.
How bout a little nod to punk ? It wasn’t my big thing but bands like television and the stranglers are worth taking a crack at. They were both very complex for punk/new wave.
Ritual de lo Habitual is one of the most musically satisfying albums in the rock genre that I own. (1600+ albums) Avery is a frickin genius and if they didn't have a him as a bass player, they wouldn't have gone anywhere. Three days and Then She Did... deserves more attention than this song.
It’s a wall to wall masterpiece. Every note from every instrument matters, but the production is so dense that each time you listen, you can hear new things. On top of that, depending on what system and/or medium you’re listening with, this can change the way you perceive the music as well. It’s almost like a new experience each time if you pay attention. I think it contains Perry’s best lyrics cumulatively and each instrument shines in every song. There’s a lot of bands from the 1986 to late 90’s era that are celebrated, but I’m not sure if any of them made an album as thoroughly impressive as Ritual. Just my opinion after listening to it for 32 years.
Great tune from a uniquely good album, the heart of which is the the epic 25-minute musical triptych of Three Days, Then She Did and Of Course. Such crazy virtuosity, evocative storytelling and out-there musical non-conformism. There’s literally nothing else that sounds like those songs! Three Days would require Rick to spend a good half hour breaking it down, there’s soooo much going on. And I’d LOVE Rick (or any musician!) to explain why the 1:20-3:00 section of Then She Did is so damn hypnotically captivating! Love your vids Rick!
I found your page a few days ago and man you can break down a song. Really cool stuff man. You cover just about everything i really love in the music world.
Ok, no disrespect intended at all but what exactly are you comparing it to? The best songs from 25 years ago are certainly heads and shoulders beyond most of the music being released today, but also heads and shoulders above and beyond most of the music that was released that year. This isn't a time based argument... it's just a darn good song from a darn good band. Take a serious look at any of the music that isn't top 40 right now... it won't take long before you find some wonderfully complex and interesting things.
Not entirely sure it's fair... there was a lot of generic not good rock on the radio then as well. There's a certain perceptual shift that happens with time and distance. 99% of radio music has been easily forgettable ever since the beginning so, we forget it. I mean look - "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred is a fun song.. I remember signing along to it when I was in High School but it hasn't stood the test of time nearly as well as Been Caught Stealing and nor should it. That year there were probably a dozen great songs that are memorable and had great airplay. 25 years from now we'll probably remember a couple of gems from 2018 as well.
This is weird! Earlier today I went through your playlist of this series because I clearly remember you had a Jane's Addiction song in there but to my surprise there wasn't! Then you upload this one! Our minds were synced up, Rick. Great video.
When I was a boy, my big brother held onto my hands And he made me slap my own face I looked up to him then and still do He was trying to teach me something And now I know what it was!
I was born in ‘83 and I started playing guitar in 2nd grade. No lessons or anything. Just listening to the radio and playing along to songs like this on the radio, well into “adulthood”.
If it's true that they only block No One Knows, you should have a go at Go With the Flow which imo was the best pure rock pop song I had heard in years when it came out.
This made me giddy the whole way through. Fantastic seeing/hearing you dissect a song by one of my favorite bands. Eric A was a hugely influential player for me when I was first picking up bass - I ravenously learned every bass line on the album.
"Three Days" by Jane's Addiction is their best work IMO

Then She Did is their masterpiece imo

I could be mistaken but I'm fairly sure Dave Navarro said in an interview some time ago that what is described here as acoustic guitar was unplugged electric guitar(s) mic'ed up.
Ah, maybe I haven't misremembered after all :-)
That's the first thing I thought when he soloed the guitar track. Mic on the amp in the iso and one in the control room while he's overdubbing.
That's exactly what I was waiting for Rick to solo. Because I had always heard that as well.

the hook during the solo is definitive of the whole band for me.
Always loved this song. Its so weird... Perry Farrell had such an usual voice. His singing was beautiful. Everything felt wrong in a great way. LOL
Porno For Pyros was good too. I never heard anything I disliked by him, even if not all of it worked for me.

Perry Farrell kind of reminds me of Van De Graaf Generator's Peter Hamill.

Was never a fan until I saw them live at a festival 15 years ago... blown away.
Jane Says 🎵🎵
ldahui have you seen my wig around? I feel naked without it.
Zeruda Densetsu she knows they all want her to go
Jane says that I'm going away to spain when I get my money saved gonna start tomorrow....
I found your page a few days ago and man you can break down a song. Really cool stuff man. You cover just about everything i really love in the music world.
Do Pavement
It's a perfect song. You know it when you hear it the first time. "It's just as simple as that."
OMG Todays music sound so boring when you compare it to a song like this.
Exactly!
I`m comparing it to the songs that on the radio right now. Fair comparison IMO since this song was also played on the radio a lot.
Jestem Genek that's the problem ur comparing this to modern day radio hits
This is weird! Earlier today I went through your playlist of this series because I clearly remember you had a Jane's Addiction song in there but to my surprise there wasn't! Then you upload this one! Our minds were synced up, Rick. Great video.
Been caught stealing what a great song
Love watching Rick's mind work. Great breakdown as always. I learn alot from you and appreciate it very much. Thanks Rick!
When I was a boy, my big brother held onto my hands
And he made me slap my own face
I looked up to him then and still do
He was trying to teach me something
And now I know what it was!
Haha that was my favorite along with many other Jane's songs.
I was born in ‘83 and I started playing guitar in 2nd grade. No lessons or anything. Just listening to the radio and playing along to songs like this on the radio, well into “adulthood”.
Queens Of The Stone Age please
I already made it and it got blocked. You can watch it at www.flatfiv.com
If it's true that they only block No One Knows, you should have a go at Go With the Flow which imo was the best pure rock pop song I had heard in years when it came out.
podpod.. Or Little Sister..
I Appear Missing, such a great 'lead' guitar near the end. Has a hook without sounding forced or mundane.
True. And bass line in final part is really cool
I love how I can almost see what's going on in Pro Tools reflected in the mirror finish on Rick's Tele.
Please do No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age!
Already did. Go to www.flatfiv.com and you could watch it. Those guys are blockers
The link doesn't work for me. Love this series though
This made me giddy the whole way through.
Fantastic seeing/hearing you dissect a song by one of my favorite bands. Eric A was a hugely influential player for me when I was first picking up bass - I ravenously learned every bass line on the album.
We need more dissonance in music.
Matt Sherman working on it
Can I interest you in some Melvins?
Bartok, Stravinsky, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Soft Machine
Alice in Chains
Check out Ligeti, Penderecki, Schoenberg, Stockhausen, Ferneyhough, Nancarrow, Ives....
