Something that particularly stuck out to me on that whole album was that the snare seemed to be dry in the right channel and a reverb return on the left which made me feel like the snare it crossed my head. For want of a better expression!
This was the first chili peppers song I heard and saw the video and thought who are these guys???? Frickin loved it!!!!! Being a drummer and hearing together with fleas bass they blew my mind Chads heavy hitting and wicked groove makes him my all time favorite
While it's certainly possible to have too many melodies/a busy melody happening at once, you probably can never have too much rhythm--and the Chili Peppers have always known this :D
Rick is the only guy who gives you a song you’ve heard, played a million times and leaves you feeling like the first time you heard it. Amazing. An organ and a Jewish harp, never heard it
Awesome, never noticed that jew's harph in this song. :) Other suggestions for you: Pink Floyd Deep Purple Led Zeppelin Opeth Ne Obliviscaris - please pick this one :) Gentle Giant Judast Priest Iron Maiden Death Megadeth Dream Theater Pain of Salvation Porcupine Tree Black Sabbath
This is why I love these videos so much. We're talking about a Chili Pepper's song and Rick takes a sidebar to teach us about "Sprechstimme" and Berg/Schoenberg opera.
Okay, I love this song and everything else that RHCP does. I didn't hear any explanation of "what makes this song great". There was no discussion of key or time signatures or how the parts work together. Basically, it was just punching in/out of individual tracks.
Not only do the vocals have a pitch, but most of the time he sits on the flatted 5th of the key (tri-tone). Which is what makes this song sound so funky and bouncy and goofy and carefree and fun. Well, that and the Jew's harp.
Kiedis' vocals were extremely dry as explained, so dry in fact, he was forced to, "Drink a little wattah."
I bet Gordon Ramsay doesn't like his vocals

I'm surprised Rick didn't mention the nod to Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" at the end...
That crazy rhythm guitar at the end sounds like Sweet Leaf sped-up. That is a plus, BTW. Saw RHCP in 2006. Great show! Did not realize how good Frusciante was until I saw them. He's also an excellent vocalist. Great video! Thanks Rick.
I reverse back over John Frusciante's guitar solo and was pleasantly surprised.
It's very simple, but it sounds great :-)
samplik prost Oh yea dude!! I need this sound 1hour loop ( Sorry my english,I'm Brazilian)
Something that particularly stuck out to me on that whole album was that the snare seemed to be dry in the right channel and a reverb return on the left which made me feel like the snare it crossed my head. For want of a better expression!
John is the greatest guitar player of my generation - it's not even a discussion.
This was the first chili peppers song I heard and saw the video and thought who are these guys???? Frickin loved it!!!!!
Being a drummer and hearing together with fleas bass they blew my mind
Chads heavy hitting and wicked groove makes him my all time favorite
The Bass riff sounds like "Come Together" by the Beatless lol :D
At 10:12 the guitar sounds like Sweet Leaf by Sabbath
Best RHCP album ever and one of the best rock albums of all time!
Other suggestions for you:
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
Led Zeppelin
Opeth
Ne Obliviscaris - please pick this one :)
Gentle Giant
Judast Priest
Iron Maiden
Death
Megadeth
Dream Theater
Pain of Salvation
Porcupine Tree
Black Sabbath
Amazing how much thought goes into songs that seem so loose & spontaneous. Great vid, as always, Rick.
A song from the Stadium Arcadium era would be so sweet...
Turn it again. I wonder how many hidden guitar parts is there. :)
They were my fave band for YEARS, this was the first album of theirs that I hated.
Maurizio Mezzatesta wtf is wrong with u. That was frusciante’s masterpiece
I respectfully disagree. Between BSSM and his solo work, SA doesn't come close.
Maurizio Mezzatesta I don’t know how you could listen to a song like Wet Sand and come to this conclusion, smh
This is why I love these videos so much. We're talking about a Chili Pepper's song and Rick takes a sidebar to teach us about "Sprechstimme" and Berg/Schoenberg opera.
BSSM is definetively a Real Masterpiece!
Thanks, Rick. Always appreciate your dissection and analysis of songs. Dishin' out the insights.
last riff = sweet leaf
I love love love BSSM but after your breakdowns it makes it even better
Okay, I love this song and everything else that RHCP does. I didn't hear any explanation of "what makes this song great". There was no discussion of key or time signatures or how the parts work together. Basically, it was just punching in/out of individual tracks.
That’s because key and time signature aren’t what make songs great! Sorry I’m two years late
Not only do the vocals have a pitch, but most of the time he sits on the flatted 5th of the key (tri-tone). Which is what makes this song sound so funky and bouncy and goofy and carefree and fun. Well, that and the Jew's harp.
"...even though it's essentially rapping!"
Rick, you old fart lol. Love this series so much.
Always amazing to listen to just bass and drums of RHCP. Those guys always kill it!
