Before the audition, the Chili peppers had heard that Chad “ate drums for breakfast”. When he showed up with his drums sticks, Flea went: so, is that your breakfast?
A long time ago (late 80's?), I used to play in a band with Duffy King in Detroit. We would occasionally open for a band called Toby Red. After we were done playing, Duffy and I would stay and watch them just to see their drummer. He was SO GOOD! Yes, you probably figured it out by now, it was Chad. His energy and groove was on a different level even then.
Saw Chad play long before RHCP at the Sidestreet Lounge, a bar in Allen Park, MI. I was 19 with a fake ID. His band was Toby Redd, I believe. Good times. Met him very briefly when RHCP were doing an interview for a PBS program in downtown Detroit but it was fleetingly quick. They gave us free passes to the show that night. One of my favorite concerts ever with RHCP headlining with the warmup bands being The Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. What a night.
if i remember correctly, My dad is buddy's with a player from that band. (don't roast me internet lol). Checks out b/c they grew up in the same time period and Detroit based people. Chad grew up in Bloomfield, MI, very close to me nowadays. Have yet to run into him at Hunter House in Bham. maybe one day!
Chad didn't actually reply to the "drummer wanted" ad. He was recommended to Flea by Frusciante's ex-girlfriend. Flea was told that Chad "ate drums for breakfast" 😀
Around the time Mothers Milk came out in 1989, RHCP were a well oiled machine! Chad’s drumming made their sound tighter and polished. You could tell they were about to be huge!!!
I actually knew DH Peligro very well. I played in his solo band Peligro for a short stint when I lived in Los Feliz (Atwater Village). My roommate was Angelo Moore from Fishbone. His girlfriend threw him out their apartment because he wouldn’t clean the bed or do the house chores when she was away at work 😅! Anyway another story. I also met Chad Smith around two weeks after he got the Chili Pepper gig. DH told me that he got kicked out of the band because of his heroine use and that it was affecting and rubbing off of Anthony Kiedis work performance. Landy?… I think was the name of the manager of the Chili Peppers? DH heard that he told Flea, that they didn’t want him because he was being a bad influence to Anthony and since he was black, the look of the band didn’t coincide with the management image of a "all white funk rock band". DH told me that Flea cried to him on the phone that they had to let him go from the band. Flea considered DH one of his best friends. This is true. Flea and John stopped by a few times when we rehearsed at my place. Former 24-7 Spyz drummer Tobias Ralph was our drummer in Peligro. Those were good times! I miss DH, he was so funny and such a cool guy to hang out with, as well as John Frusciante!
Hey Rick take a listen to Broken Record with Rick Rubin. He did interviews with every member of the Red Hot Chili Pepper and they talked about how Chad's audition came to be. Everything here for the most part is true except there is a friend of the band who recommended Chad Smith. With that said, they did know that he was coming because their friend told them, "he eats drums for breakfast." It is this reason that when he comes into the room to audition Flea says, "is that your breakfast," referring to the drums.
💥Fun Fact - Tim Leitch (Spit Stix), the drummer for the punk band *FEAR* , produced the first Red Hot Chili Peppers demo tape. He is an amazing, high-caliber drummer 🥁in punk as well as a variety of other genres.
The best thing about Rick Beato is that he can just sit and listen and let person develop and finish their thought without jumping in and interrupting. Probably because the most important skill for a musician is to know how to listen….
I know this would be a miracle to have happen, but any chance to have Mr. John Fruscante… would be an amazing and truly a god send…. HES my dream guest!
Micheal is something else with his psychology. I recently watched the meeting Korn had with him before they chose him to produce their album untouchables. Micheal sat there on the couch and was like “I’m here if you want to make your masterpiece, if you don’t than F$&@ off.” And they chose him. Probably because a lot of musicians are so damn used to getting their asses kissed that he completely surprised them by having the guts to talk to them like that. The album ended up costing 5 million dollars to make. One of the most expensive records to make ever. And several members of korn didn’t like it. Typically the members who later admitted they were messed up on drugs through the process of making that album. But I think it’s hard to argue about the production on that record. It’s not korns best songs. But it is Korns best recording in my opinion. And he managed to get it out of them with an injured drummer who had surgery in the middle of pre production and a couple guys messed up on drugs.
Apparently Anthony or Flea said to him, yo you’re in but ditch the bandana Chad turns up the next rehearsal with the bandana on and that’s when they knew they had the guy
Rick Beato comes in clutch with these guests, considering you have contacts could I request an interview with slash accompanied by his guitar that would be killer! Maybe even some more recent talented artists like Jelly roll or
I was Biafra’s roommate 1984-6 and of course knew DH - got to record with the DKs ( percussion) at Wally Heiders and DH , nice guy - used my drum set for “ Bedtime” - unfortunately but he did develop some bad habits and obviously it was too much for even the Peppers - which is saying a lot ! really too bad . I don’t know exactly the circumstances of his death but as soon as I heard about it , my thought were he must have passed out from use but perhaps there were other reasons - very sad
When Taylor died, I thought instantly of Chad. I thought it would be the perfect marriage. Oh well Foo's are in good hands now. But can you imagine that??
Chads in my top 5 drummers of influence. My only issue is that he is always loud and goofy on every single drum video. Wondering if that's his personality or nervous reaction being on camera? Would be crazy to see him chill and just talk. BTW the Will Farrel crap needs to go. So old now.
I remember reading the book Scar Tissue that Anthony Keides wrote about his life .. years ago.. he talks about meeting Chad.. that he had this long hair.. he was late.. they kept waiting for him.. they were outside the building and then Chad walks down the sidewalk towards them 😂 and they look at him like “😳 what!? You’re the guy!?” They hated his Motley Crue or Guns N Roses shirt .. some Hair Metal band …They automatically hated him .. they told him to come back the following day but they didn’t like his long hair so they told him to cut it bald 😂 they thought he’d never come back 😂 the next day she shows up Bald 😂 and the starts playing wit them .. Flea was like “Fuck this guy.. he’s not gonna hang wit us” and when they started playing Flea and everyone in the band got scared because they couldn’t Keep up wit Chad 😂 the rest was history 😂
@@user-ic8se1nq4t again I read the Book 15 years ago .. not saying you’re wrong or right .. I said “That’s what I remember” still not saying I’m right … you understand? 🤦🏻♂️

Bring Chad Smith to your studio.
Pleaaasseeee
We need it. Chad is very likable and entertaining in every interview.
Chad Smith AND Will Farrell
Bring the whole band
…and do what with him? You into some pretty freaky acoustics? Not kink shaming, and he might do it-these second channels can get weird.
An interview with Chad Smith has got to be next Rick
Imagine a Frusciante + Beato interview 🤯🤯
Wow... this would bring down the internet for sure !!
I’d actually combust.
Yes Please!
Indeed
John will never
I was lucky enough see the very first show with this lineup.

Chad's a boss. Boss from day one. Beast on a leash.
Love Chad for his pure love of the music. Just kills it live. Glad i could see them.

Just saw a Chad interview and he confirms Beinhorn was there at the audition
idk but i assume that elf movie he did a while back blew their hats off he HAD ii get in

I dont know if its possible. But would you be able to ask Phil Collins? He retired in Miami. I think.
tipically, the magic begins with the "Correct" Drummer. Beatles , Nirvana, etc.
