    #Liszt I love his pieces because I always feel as if the speak to me in a way that other composers don't. Especially these romantic pieces like un sospiro or Liebestraum or his transcription of Schuber's Ständchen. When I play, I feel as if I am in another world for the duration. Then I come back and my hands hurt :(

      I agree. Further on in Un Sospiro, shortly before the final climax, it gets even more wacky, and if you don't know what you're looking for, it's easy to miss the melody altogether. Liszt was a total genius.

      When practicing Liszt's compositions I really like how he keeps the momentum flowing especially in Un Sospiro. Each of his pieces just flutters along creating a story yet to be understood. Every time I hear this piece I imagine a story of two people sailing towards one another. They have been trying to connect with one another, but they have been facing many trials to reach each other. Eventually, through smooth movements and careful precision, they make it to each other. (Sorry for rambling) Overall, thanks for the content it has been nice to escape from this chaotic world and immerse myself in your style of playing. #Liszt

    Un Sospiro really shows what I love about Liszt. He had the ability to make gorgeous works that are extremely technical and difficult, without it sounding loud or messy. A casual listen might not understand the difficulty of a piece like this, but a pianist will immediately understand that it is a masterpiece. #liszt

    • @MrJohnJiren
      @MrJohnJiren 3 года назад +6

      I always found Liszt to be the composer who achieved the most technically demanding pieces for the piano without ever losing sight of a deep musicality. Some have composed more complex pieces, but always, in my opinion, at the expense of some musicality.

    • @aimilize3518
      @aimilize3518 2 года назад

      @@MrJohnJiren I agree, there may be some pieces that are harder than standard Liszt repertoire (Mereaux, Godowsky, Ives, Sorabji) but they sacrifice musicality for technical difficulty (Mereaux has even been described as ''artistically worthless'') but Liszt strikes quite a beautiful balance

    I would say that Un Sosprino is what really inspired me to dive deeper into classical music. I remember, as a beginner, I thought the piece would require just a little extra technique. But, then I looked more intently at the piece; I was shocked to find that piano pieces could have more than two bars 😂 After that, I went back to my beginner pieces😅. I love Liszt because of his ability to write so beautifully expressly, and in this masterpiece, I feel inner peace.🖤

    What I love about Liszt's pieces is that you can hear his dedication to the music he was composing. Also by not following all the strict composing "rules" back then he has given early proof that music doesn't need rules to sound good, because art always is a subjective concept. What I like about this piece in particular is the flowing and natural feeling.

    Thanks for having the humility to put up this video Annique. Not because it taught us a lot ( which it did, for example I'd never know to look for small print) but as someone else said, it humanises you, and lets us more into the world of the virtuoso pianist. Honestly, this is one of my favorite videos by you so far. Un Sospiro is without exaggeration my favorite piece of music ever written, and I spent a good two years working my way through and polishing it long before I had any reason playing a piece this difficult.
    It’s been about a decade and a half since I first opened the sheet music for this, but I still remember going through all of the same struggles you show in your early playthroughs here. Granted, you condensed what was a month-plus process for me into a day, but it’s really a unique, fun experience watching someone encounter and work through all of the curveballs this piece throws at you for the first time.

    More proof that Liszt was just in a realm of his own. This is probably my favorite piece of all time. I stumbled across it a few years back (I'm not a classical music buff) and immediately fell in love. I think you did an amazing job!
    Edit- as a drummer, years ago, after playing for 20 years, I realized that my hand technique was holding me back and completely retaught myself how to hold the sticks and fleshed out the flownof my technique. It took about 2 years to get where i wanted. I completely understand how playing something a certain way creates those memory patterns that make it so difficult to abruptly change.

    What I love about Liszt is that he pushed the limits of what was possible to do with the piano. He is not just a virtuoso pianist, he was a brilliant composer with a huge amount of underrated amazing compositions and with very innovative piano solo arrangements of orchestral music. The Un Sospiro concert etude is a very popular piece for a good reason, as it is really beautiful and impressive. However, Liszt composed so many pieces that are mostly unknown that are just as beautiful. I love how I can still listen to his music and get surprised by some wonderful pieces I have never heard before.

    7:05 «WASTED». What do you say, Annique - WASTED? No, absolutely not! Thanks to that misunderstandig, you showed that it is possible to play the melody with one hand and the akkopagnement with the other. So why did Liszt choose to complicate the whole thing with the constant crossing of hands? Because it is technically much more demanding! And that’s what it was all about, it was going to be hard to play. This is what Wim Winters and his followers do not understand - it was about impressing other pianists, music critics and audience. A number of such compositions were made unnecessarily difficult to play!

    The thing that I adore in this etude (Un Sospiro) is the arpeggios and how the left hand and the right hand are doing crosshands in order to play the melody. What I love about compositions from @/liszt is the fact that they are really virtuosic and they test every pianist's skills (that's because @/liszt was a giant showoff at his time!!!!!) By the way ANNIQUE I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS AND THEY REALLY MOTIVATE ME TO PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP POSTING!!!!!!!

    #Liszt Liszt Stücke und Arrangements überraschen mich immer wieder. In seinen Stücken schafft er es immer wieder mir sämtlichen Raum zum abschweifen zu nehmen. Er füllt sie praktisch vollkommen aus und sorgt für die volle Konzentration auf das Stück selber. Außerdem hat er wahrlich ein talent für Re-Kompositionen auf dem Klavier, vor allem in Verbindung mit Paganini, beispielsweise la campanella. Auch seine “ruhigeren” Stücke sind sehr lebhaft, er versteckt die Grundmelodie nur. Durch diese Kompositionsweise hat man Kaum eine Möglichkeit sich nicht in das Stück zu vertiefen, was meiner Ansicht nach an sehr spaßiges Gefühl beim Spielen bereitet. Und offensichtlich war er stark begeistert von Virtuosen sprüngen. Ich selber habe den Plan später im Orchester zu spielen und würde mich über die Noten freuen, vor allem weil ich bisher nicht viel an Noten besitze.
    Liebe Grüße: Stuie :)

    Many people say that Liszt’s music is too over the top and has few too many unnecessarily showy parts it in it. I look at it in quite the opposite way. As some may know, Liszt revolutionized the solo piano repertoire. Now that’s not an easy task to do with some simplistic straight to the point piano pieces. The only way he did this is by creating piano pieces that feel like a whole orchestra but with being limited to just twelve keys. He is able to unlock emotions that you may have never felt before and covey complex emotion unlike (and before) any other composer just using the piano. Not to mention all of his pieces are incredibly unique and beautiful in there own way. And every one feels different from the rest (unlike Chopin, no hate I love his music so much but it gets repetitive at times). He also has the ability to create detailed mental art if you just close your eyes and let the music sink in. And if you’ve ever tried to compose music, it seems impossible at times. Say what you want about Liszt, but he’s a musical genius whether you like it or not. He has done what no other composer could.
    My opinion on this piece is that it conveys a soothing, smooth river which is the arpeggios under the stresses of life which is the melody, and throughout the song the melody calms and strengthens just like our worries and stresses but in the end it is resolved so just keep pushing through because under it all is the smooth arpeggios just remember it does get better.
    Also I absolutely love Chopin almost as much as Liszt and I’m not sending any hate I think he’s just as talented as Liszt but I also think he built off of liszt. Because liszt was able to create solo piano repertoires unlike anything anyone had ever heard before anyone else. So many people wanted to hear him and learn from him that he even invented the “ MasterClass” where he would teach a large group of students at a time. I know this is largely opinionated so don’t hate and let me know who’s ur favorite composer and if you disagree or agree!
    Thanks!

    Well, you probably didn't understand the correct technique in everything there is an exchange of the right and left hand, that is, the rappeggio is divided into left and right, plus what is in the treble clef is played once with the right hand and once with the left hand. A lot of patience

    #liszt My student made the exact same mistake as you when he started to learn this piece by himself! I haven't taught this piece before when he told me that he wanted to learn but fortunately I have watched a video of the playing and managed to spot his mistake in time. What I like about Liszt's pieces is the strong emotions that some of them can convey, for example in Liebestraum it reminds me of a kind of unconditional love that can only be divine. Maybe that's why my student chose Liszt's pieces as he is a very sensitive boy.

    I began learning this piece several years ago but never finished it. Definitely a challenge. What I love about this Liszt piece are the rushing waves of sound. Very contemplative. To keep those melodies even as you’re trading between hands is most difficult, I found. Thank you for sharing your learning curve at the start, by the way. Keep up the great work and videos!

    Learn it in HOW long????? It took me over 6 months to get through this!! I AM the world's SLOWEST sight reader!!! NO ONE can read slower than I!! However, for someone as experienced as you, I don't see how the hand over hand technique here got past you? I'm also the least experienced "pianist" on here, maybe my "slowness" of reading caused me to catch the technique as written. I never could really get this piece down, those arpeggios just killed me. I could play it, but those couple parts just never quite came together. You're beautiful BTW! This video amused me! 🙂

    Exactly what happened to me!! Although I did switch the melody between hands, I practiced the opening arpeggios incorrectly for weeks! 🤦‍♂

    I adore many of #Liszt# pieces. He is very under-rated. His Etudes are phenomenal, as well as many of his other pieces and the Années de Pèlerinage, Liebestraume, Rhapsodies etc. Maybe because he composed so much and so much varied, people have trouble following it all? Anyway, pity his piano pieces are not played more frequently (outside of Liebestraume, etc). Il Sospiro is truly beautiful!!!

    Some pieces sound very complicated and impressive, but are not that hard to play. Other pieces does not sound that hard but is extremely hard to play. Un Sospiro most definately belongs to the last category. It is a beast in every single way. Much, much harder than people might think….

    What I love (and sometimes hate as a pianist actually playing his pieces) is how deceiving they can sometimes be. When listening to them, a lot of the time the melody just carries so beautifully and the fast sections have such a light touch, that you don't really end up noticing or fully comprehending the difficulty of the piece and can just relax while listening to it. But when actually attempting to play it, you notice all the fine details that contribute to this effect, and how difficult and complex they are in reality. #Liszt

    #Liszt Un Sospiro is one of my favorite pieces by Liszt. The main melody is like a cooling singing while the movement is kept constant by the arpeggios. Liszt music for me is thrilling to listen and to play. Although technically challenging, learning and listening to multiple melodic lines makes me feel as if I’m playing more than one instrument. I feel Liszt incorporates this in many of his pieces. I find sitting down to learn a piece by Liszt is almost like an exercise. Learning fingering combinations that suite the piece best, articulation to make the melodies sing out, and even the approach to the pieces in general almost prepares you for other composers you might choose to play. While other pieces are also very demanding technically, I think Liszt music encompasses so many aspects of artistic interpretation and technical prowress that it prepares you for other pieces you might encounter in the future.

    Ha loved this video. Very impressed you could play it on day 2 after just a couple of hours and with such a gorgeous musical shape. Wow. Here are my suggestions for future challenges : 1. Wild/Gershwin Embraceable you (in the tradition of Un Sospiro), 2. Liszt Petrarch sonnet 104 and I want to hear all 5 cadenzas after the 1 hour !! #Liszt

    Well, I am bad enough that I need to read the sheet at least 1,000 times... All prints! Fine, gross, whatever... :-D Really, the ability you have to just pick something up and make sense of it, even if it's extremely complex, simply astonishes me... I'm never going to get there, so I just enjoy what you can do and nod as if I knew what I was doing... LOL
    #Listz I love the way he manages to elaborate on a theme without losing the essence: you feel it simple but rich in subtones, and it's actually devilishly complex with many nuances, but he somehow used some kind of blackmagic to make it seem simple... I guess it helps when you have 11 fingers on each hand like *he surely did have* (otherwise, he was an alien, which has some appeal, to be honest...) :-)
    My favourite piece is his _Variations on the Carnival of Venice, by Paganini_... It's deliciously mellifluous and both simplifies and elaborates on Paganini, which is a feat on itself! Plus, its base is a popular music that's crossed frontiers and it's part of my childhood, that's an extra!

Keep up the good work I really enjoy your videos. Next challenge Grieg March of the Trolls??? And try to beat Alice Sara Ott for speed

    Hello, thank you for your fantastic work. For the next video could you play the impromptu no.3 of Schubert, or the Appasionata sonata of Beethoven?
