The subtitle stuff is amazing, incredible. I learned English though television, but mostly books and dictionaries - because stopping a show to look up a word or a phrase (to this day a habit of mine) is annoying to the extent it is not sustainable. But here it's so easy. Everything us 90s kids had to do with google and forums is just incorporated into this innovative, interactive program. It's really amazing what people do for each other and how we can all progress together, one step at a time. I'm sure lingopie will get better and the cons will be less pronounced with time.
I can’t tell you how much I’m absolutely loving Lingopie. I’ve only had it for about a month and I went back and forth on it for awhile not knowing if it would be worth it. Now, it’s all I do, my Spanish has grown so much just in a month! I can’t imagine where I’ll be in a year. I wish they had a little more content in the “Mexico” Spanish part but I’ll watch Spain Spanish when I’m done watching all the Mexico Spanish shows. I bought a year because in the app I didn’t see a place where they offered a lifetime subscription. I will try and do that when my year is up. But I’m literally loving it. 🥰
I have basic of english and spanish , i watch spanish shows on Atreus player i love their shows , but its just like spanish netflix , i want to learn japanese, im Brazilian so i had it easy in learning a lot of spanish, i learned english in my childhood so even if its not perfect i can understand and talk a little but japanese i dont even know where to begin...
@@JJOOKER13 wow that’s a lot!! I’m just trying to learn my second one. I’ll be good with that. I’ll check it Atreus though, that sounds interesting, thanks. 😊
I always felt that Lingopie was a more fleshed out version of 2 extensions I use for Japanese (Language Reactor and Yomichan) and I can't complain about the extra effort LingoPie do around that. Combined the extensions give you the flashcards (as you can add words and phrases to an Anki deck with Yomichan) with Language Reactor recommending videos (on youtube and netflix) then having the same word colouring on subtitles. Would 100% agree with intermediate learners at least so you can follow along on the audio along with the subtitles.
This sounds useful for my specific situation. I'm pretty fluent in Japanese and am fan-translating an anime, but I need more practice with understanding spoken Japanese in shows. (I'm pretty good at this in my own language because I've watched way too much cable TV from childhood.)
I think it's great in theory, but in actuality their Japanese content is full of translation errors. For example, they make incorrect guesses about subjects and objects not made explicit in the Japanese. It should be clear from the context in most cases but they seem to be using a program rather than humans to do the translation so they get it wrong. They mistranslate and also translate inconsistently. For the vocabulary feature they often mis-map the two languages so you can only save out a whole phrase instead of the single word that you're targeting, or they don't even translate the one word you're targeting. I didn't subscribe because they're cutting a lot of corners with automated translation and not putting effort into proper human review. It shows.
Danke! Merci! I’m using Duolingo to learn French as a beginner and to turn my conversational German fluent. LingoPie sounds like it would help. I always wanted to learn French and thought it might make me empathize with the immigrants in the ESL program in which I volunteer.
I might like to learn a little German because my husband learned some, but it’s not my main target language currently. This is just the review I needed right now! Thanks. I wish I knew if I would like the shows, because I am picky, and want clean content. I like content to be rated and to disclose what it’s rated for. I don’t appreciate unrated content with surprises.
German is very interesting but I would like to learn Italian first. And I will definitely be trying this app, I manually change the language/subtitles in Netflix so I can get some practice in so having an app that has all those practice tools is great. Great review, thank you!
Sounds like a great program to supplement the learning process. Shame they don't currently offer Dutch. I'll be sending this video to my friends who are studying any of their nine languages though
I want to learn spanish because i became desperate to truly become fluent in a second languished, and would massively help me at work. I learned some in high school and loved it. Wish i never dropped learning it
Thank you so much. This video was really helpful. I am always trying to find better ways to learn languages. I have been learning Spanish for a while and once I become fluent I will move on to German. I think both languages will be really useful for when I move to Europe.
Thank for this review. After many years of learning French I still find comprehension the most difficult aspect. So frustrated with that reality, in fact, I started to learn Italian. Thanks to a high number of FR-IT cognates, I discovered and the lovely precision of Italian, I could understand the spoken language after two weeks. Notwithstanding, as an expat who now lives and wants to stay in France, Lingo Pie might be just the thing for me. I will be subscribing and I'll look of your test Prep Site in four to six months to share my experience, with both languages. Cheers!
Thank you very much for the review. It really helped in my decision-making process. I just got a very good offer in a RUclips ad and almost purchased it impulsively. But this helped me to reflect on the pros and cons and I decided that it was not worth it, even though it's a very good offer.
I want to learn German because I love German philosophy, especially Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. One of my dreams is to be able to read Thus Spake Zarathustra in German, as they say it is one of the most beautifully written works in the language.
It is great that you want to learn German and I recommend you to start with books in easy German like they use them at school. I am sure you will find philosophy school books too.
This is great. I lived in Germany for a few years and was very intrested in learning the language. However COVID limited my ability to converse with people.
Thanks for a great review - probably one of the most helpful and informative I've come across on youtube for any product! (And I may well be their target audience - roughly CEFR A2, looking to build fluency, vocabulary and listening skills.)
Awesome review! I’m learning Italian and would like to know how many offerings are actually real spoken Italian? Or are they mostly dubbed into Italian.
Definitely agree about this method being more for advanced beginners / intermediate learners. I remember trying to learn French with in a similar method using my own subtitles but becoming frustrated when I didn't catch anything but when I did the same for Swedish where I was a bit more advanced, it was more about learning new words when you already know how the grammar works which was really helpful. For learning German, I think it'd be like learning Swedish for me, where it was really fun learning the shared origins of words and connections between the languages. Great review as always.
Lingopie sounds like a great program. I wonder if they have a condensed movie option. Movies often have dead space where nothing is being said so I wonder if you can choose to watch a condensed version of a show that keeps the dialogue flowing.
Heyo itsa me again. When the video first started and I saw it was a entertainment type language learning program, I was a bit skeptical of its usefulness. I definitely agree that it would be better for more experienced levels of whatever language you are learning. Im alwasy just a bit scared that one would get so caught up in the entertainment that you would forget to learn from it.
Good to hear from you again Mike! agree with you, but it can also be an effective tool as you learn subconsciously, without effort. it also keeps you more engaged
Is it true that their yearly subscription is non-refundable after the 7-day trial period? If after I pay $72 for a year subscription then decide to upgrade to a lifetime subscription, will they apply $72 already paid towards the $199?
I'm not 100% sure but I think they will credit it towards the lifetime price. I'd shoot them an email to confirm. I only purchased the $72/annual plan (which is charged upfront for the year). Anyway, good luck - hope you like it!
I want to learn German so I can take a vacation to Germany. It seems like a great tool when you want to work on your fluency. It goes along with the idea that once you believe you are fluent in another language, travel to that country and live there for at least one month. You will find, you can't understand anyone. Because you know a formal, typically slowed/watered-down form of the language.
Im just happy there's a way to watch shows in my target language. It can be hard to learn when I don't have a lot of material that engages me outside of lesson plans. Lessons are great but I want to have fun with it too.
Great review, I am learning through roseta stone, RUclips, Russian readers, lingopie sounds like a good tool to fully round out my learning. A way to immerse myself into the language)
Thanks for the helpful video. Do you know if they offer for a German native speaker like me who likes to improve her French, French-German subtitles as well? Is there also some educational content like here or are they are offering just movies or entertainment shows?
I actually don't know if they offer the ability to switch the primary language subtitles from English to another language, like Deutsch. That is a good question. I'll check it out and get back to you :)
I''m a Spanish teacher thinking Lingopie might be more effective than simply showing a series in class as I have up to now. It seems clear from this video that it would be best if each student had an account to take advantage of the flashcards and such, but that's a steep ask.

Nice review, thanks! BTW there are two expressions in English, "make sure (somebody) does something", and "be sure to do something", and you seem to be mixing them up/merging them together, "make sure to do something" , which is kind of odd for someone keen on languages! ;) But thanks anyway.

Now that's what I call "an honest review." This was extremely beneficial..
never heard of lingopie before this but sounds like a great way to learn once you have a good base in your language. thanks for this video!

They do keep adding languages it seems, so maybe they'll add Dutch soon. Thanks for watching!
I'm going g to give it a try. Gracias
I want to learn spanish because i became desperate to truly become fluent in a second languished, and would massively help me at work. I learned some in high school and loved it. Wish i never dropped learning it

Excellent video on Lingopie. I provided a simple comprehensive summary of how it works. Thanks for taking the time to share the video.
Thank you very much for clearing the issue about lingopie with respect to a beginner in a language and to an intermediate learner
Glad it was helpful!

In the original language
Great review. I may give LingoPie a try. I’m trying to learn German.
What happened
I want to learn German because I love German philosophy, especially Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. One of my dreams is to be able to read Thus Spake Zarathustra in German, as they say it is one of the most beautifully written works in the language.
That is a great reason to learn. You'll need to really master German to grasp those texts I am guessing.
Thank you for your comment! German is one of the languages I'm learning right now and I love philosophy!
It is great that you want to learn German and I recommend you to start with books in easy German like they use them at school. I am sure you will find philosophy school books too.
If you ever need a teacher to help you improving your skills ... 😉

Thanks for the review! Great concept that they have.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for a great review - probably one of the most helpful and informative I've come across on youtube for any product! (And I may well be their target audience - roughly CEFR A2, looking to build fluency, vocabulary and listening skills.)
Yeah sounds like you might be the perfect fit for them. Thanks for watching and sharing!
I learnt English watching videos on RUclips...I am super excited such a platform exist so I can learn german smoothly and quickly too.
Yes, it's like learning with Netflix. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your review!
Great review!
LingoPie review is very helpful.
Thanks for the LingoPie Review 2023 ifo. Well done.
Awesome review! I’m learning Italian and would like to know how many offerings are actually real spoken Italian? Or are they mostly dubbed into Italian.
They actually have a pretty good sized library of native Italian content
Definitely agree about this method being more for advanced beginners / intermediate learners. Thank you! Appreciate you sharing
My main issue is that it only works with certain platforms that I rarely use, so I worry that I can't use it for most foreign media I want to watch.
Lingopie sounds like a great program. I wonder if they have a condensed movie option. Movies often have dead space where nothing is being said so I wonder if you can choose to watch a condensed version of a show that keeps the dialogue flowing.
I don't know if I've seen that feature

Nice! That would be a good pickup
Great review, thanks! where do I get a discount code/coupon?
I am intermediate Italian and this sounds like a great way to improve the language. I'm thinking about giving it a go!
Yeah, give it a try, it works especially well when you already speak a little of the language

Great overview, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Ive been learning Russian for 6 months. I think this would be a brilliant additional tool besides my lessons.
This is a very helpful review! I’d never heard of Lingo Pie. Thanks for this helpful information!
I think it makes sense to use this as a supllemental sort of thing, along side lingodeer perhaps.
Video starts at 1:39 respectfully
what about the content catalog? is always the same or are they adding new series/films from time to time? 🤔
they seem to add new shows/movies periodically
Im just happy there's a way to watch shows in my target language. It can be hard to learn when I don't have a lot of material that engages me outside of lesson plans. Lessons are great but I want to have fun with it too.

@@TestPrepInsight Thank you!
Very interesting. I agree, this is something I would not try as a beginner.
If you're not the streaming type person you could do automatically generated captions on foreign RUclips videos that allow it. A lot do but , not all.
Can we share the account with our friends and family??
If so, is it possible to watch simultaneously?
Does Lingopie provide article type in German ?
LingoPie looks great.
I’d like to try it.
Give it a go, might be a good fit for an advanced learner like yourself
Yea the subtitles sold me
Thank you!
Great video!
Thanks!
Really useful - thank you
Glad it was helpful!

Interesting idea - Lingopie definitely has more features than just showing a Spanish language show in class. Thanks for watching!
So tempted to try using this program to assist my French language learning, just undecided if its worth it when netflix provides more titles and also has subtitles, although not as many features.... it's a toughie!!!!! P.S Great video, merci beaucoup!
I hear ya! Might be worth trying for one month to see if the added features are worth it for you. Thanks for watching!
Great review. Thank you.
No problem! Thanks for watching!
This review is very informative and useful.
Nice, glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Thanks! This helped.
Glad to hear!
I'd like to visit Germany soon! I think it would be helpful navigating
I want to learn German because my daughter wants to learn German. I was being lazy and just sitting her down in front of Mango Languages, but I realized she would enjoy it a lot more if I helped her with pronunciation. I only speak Spanish and basic Arabic, so I am learning German from scratch with her!
It is absolutely more effective when you learn with someone else. It increases motivation and it's just more fun
Good to know, thanks!
hope it helped :)
I think this one like Cake app for English learners.
Anyway I just want to have the best possible international education for my career. I want to explore the world, its cultures, see and live in a new place! Away to a better quality of life. That is why I've been continuously learning French for about 4 years now.
I'm more curious whether it's as good without an active Netflix subscription 🤔
It's still good but Netflix definitely levels it up
Does all learning on Lingopie need to be done on a PC?
No you can watch on mobile too
Great Review! I want to learn German, because I moved to Germany, hehe:)
Nice! Hope you're liking it :)
very helpful, thanks dude!
This is great only if you already have a Netflix account, which it requires. If you don't have a netflix account it's not worth it. Just note that not everybody is a Netflix subscriber.
Translating to perfect English just does not help me.
Anybody tried comprehensible input?
Thank you 🙂
No problem!
Every single person I have ever met who has mastered a foreign language has told me they did it with TV. So I think lingopie is a winner. No tool will work as a standalone, so consider this as one of your best tools in your toolbox.
Agreed! Thanks for watching
I want a feature where subtitles are phonetic and not in an alphabet that I know. I'd in fact rather learn a new phonetic alphabet that doesn't use any Greek letters. Too often pronunciation does not match standard spellings; and then there are accents. It is better to learn to speak before you learn to read. Another great alternative would be English subtitles with matching foreign grammar where possible.
Is the media dubbed in the target language or just subtitles?
Just subtitles. It's original media from your target language
thanks for the info bud...
No problem 👍
A very interesting review! Well done for providing a better understanding of what Lingopie is 👏🎬
Thanks! 😃
Good review, but I would like it compared to the other Netflix-based language learning programs.
Coming soon :)
I hope to learn enough German for LingoPie to be a helpful app.
Are Lingopie movies dubbed to spanish or is it just subtitles.
The movie is actually in Spanish
Why do you want to learn Spanish?
I’m a medical professional who wants so badly to be able to communicate with Spanish patients that come to my hospital. Because being able to communicate effectively is part of the healing process as well
Also, LingoPie definitely is not a conventional way of learning a new language, and like you said I can see why it’s not the ideal app for beginners to learn their language of choice, ultimately, I don’t think that it’s something that appeals to everyone. I think it definitely appeals to the “being entertaining” aspect to learning a language. But ultimately I don’t necessarily see this as a tool to help with proficiency, or retaining information. Just for entertainment purposes only. But that’s only my opinion
Gracias senor!!
My wife (Dutch) learned English watching television, so that is what drew me to LingoPie after being disappointed with SpanishWithPaul.
Good luck!
can you please do a review for beelinguapp and unacademy "with blue cat as the mascot"?
I want to learn German because I'm planning to give the B1 exam soon as I've been living in Germany since a while now and would like to get fluent at speaking and understanding the language.
Nice, very cool reason to learn. Thanks for watching!
Review Trancy next please.
I want to learn German so I can speak the language next time I go back in a Viking Cruise 🚢
I want to learn German so that all of my flatmates don’t have to switch to English when I join them for dinner ❤
That would be nice :)
Currently I'm using Lingopie to learn German 😅
Are you liking it?
@TestPrepInsight yes, I like it, especially the flashcards option, easily it can be created while watching videos!
I’d like to learn German just to communicate with others
Nice! Thanks for watching!
I want to learn German because I I'd like to get a job in Germany.
Good luck!
I want to learn SPANISH so that I can talk to my new neighbors.
Please pick me! 😊
Nice! You're entered :)
Nice review, thanks! BTW there are two expressions in English, "make sure (somebody) does something", and "be sure to do something", and you seem to be mixing them up/merging them together, "make sure to do something" , which is kind of odd for someone keen on languages! ;) But thanks anyway.
