  • This is part 2 of several scent control videos.
    For all 12 of John's in depth scent control documents and to have John email you when the ScentLok Saddle Hunter suit will be available, email your request to: deerjohn51@gmail.com
    Information on this video includes: how not having to pay attention to wind direction has changed how John scouts, prepares locations and hunts, activated carbon technology, electron microscope photos of activated carbon particles, molecules bonded to activated carbon, a partially bogus podcast I did, how heat from a dryer energizes molecules and examples of it that everyone has witnessed, sodium bicarbonate and water sprays, naysayers and more.
    For those of you that have been listening to me for a while, there is a lot of info in this that you already know.
    Part 3 will be a hands on video showing gear and garments, while explaining, everything to do with a scent control regimen from A to Z. It will be a 75 minute video.

    Part 3 will be posted on June 10th at 7:30 pm and it will be the video most of you have been waiting for. It will be 73 minutes long and other than the intro, it will be hands on where I will be handling and explaining every aspect of a scent control regimen from A to Z. Parts 1 and 2 were to lay a foundation from a technology standpoint so part 3 of showing the goods would be more understandable. Part 4 of 4 will be posted on June 24th and it will be a detailed, yet simple audio video of the 8 steps required for proper care and storage and it will have kill photo's on the screen from some of the bucks I've taken since using ScentLok in 1997.

    My only concern is afternoon hunting walking in. I can't setup my stand all decked out in Scentlok without sweating profusely. Especially earlier in the year. So, I still play the wind on certain scenarios. Morning hunts are better for this. I can see why you get in early and stay all day.
    Could you possibly make a "in conjunction with" video? I think this is where I'm lagging behind. Thanks

    After trying an extreme scent control regime like yourself for 4 years I don’t believe it works. I got the whole works so imma do an experiment with my dogs. They’re very food motivated. Imma buy some hotdogs because they’re oily and pretty smelly. If they can find it rolled up in the middle of a whole set of my sentlok gear then imma stick to my opinion. No I won’t be touching the hotdog and they won’t be around when I prep it. I’ll then place it in an area they frequent to see how long it takes them to find it. I’ll edit this post with the results

    John, I'm wanting to learn how to properly use, care for and store sentlock clothing. This is 2 videos now where you really just discuss the same thing over and over. I don't care about what TV hunters are doing, I'm interested in your methods. I'm hoping soon you will talk about how you actually use the technology. I really respect what you have accomplished in your hunting career and was hoping to learn something new from you but honestly your last few videos you just seem pissed at the hunting industry. Anyway I'll still keep watching and waiting, thanks for taking the time to put these videos out.

    Hi John, I have a question. You have mentioned that you typically don't wear a head covering while walking into a hunting location. I'm assuming you don't want to saturate your hat with sweat, which would make sense. Could you please address this a bit further? One concern I have is getting sweated up while walking into a location. Many times I just wear a t shirt on the way in and get dressed at the base of the tree. If I were to get dressed at the base of the tree, I'd be removing the Scentlock and all of my scent would be free to alert any deer downwind. Is this just a risk you're willing to take as long as your fully protected while up in the tree? Thanks

    How do you keep your release aid wrist strap scent free? Or do you use a metal only hand held release? I use on with a wrist strap as that is what I like, but I simply spray that strap with some sort of scent elimination spray. Based on the videos here I assume that does nothing now. Do you have any suggestions or will that be covered in part 3?

    Something I was thinking about recently and wanted to bring up, maybe you have already went over it and I just didn’t see it. I know you’ve referenced using rubber boots. But do you have a certain type that you believe hold up better and have better scent resistant properties? I have been using some big bulky lacrosse rubbers for a few years but I’d like to go down to something better for walking longer distances with. Thx for the video John. I believe this science is indeed effective in hunting clothes. I bought my first scentlok suit 20 years ago. It came in sealed plastic bags. A jacket pants gloves and a hood with a mask and drawstring. It also came with a rubber bag to store it in. The directions said to take the clothes out of the sealed plastic and put them in the dryer at the highest heat setting for about an hr. Then store them in the rubber bag. I was to run them thru the dryer every 40 hours of use. I really liked that suit. It was a Savannah. Since, I have bought 3 more suits off the shelf at cabelas. Savannah pants n jacket. Savannah coveralls and a scentlok rain suit. Those didn’t work nearly as well as the first one. After some thought and study I came to the conclusion that if those suits have been sitting on a shelf in open air for 1 year, they should’ve been put through 220 dryer cycles during that time, as one is required for every 40 hrs of the suit being exposed to open air. That’s like 25 years of hunting hours for the average guy. I can’t prove it but those suits had to be saturated with scent if the science works like it should, no? I just know I will probably never again buy another suit off the shelf anywhere. I really wish they would sell them in those sealed packages again. Is it possible to buy them where they’re put in sealed plastic as soon as they come off the production line? If so I will definitely use them again.

    • @johneberhart4062
      @johneberhart4062 2 года назад +1

      Dan, I appreciate your reply and suits from SLok do come in a plastic bag but that doesn't mean much other than it looks the part. From the moment the activated carbon is made (through the 1450 degree under pressure process), it is exposed to whatever molecules are in the environment and it is exposed through the bonding to fabric process which I'm certain requires handling by humans, through the sewing processes (there are several several of these in the making of a garment) which I'm certain gets handled by humans, then it sits in a store room somewhere where it can soak up molecules and then through the through the folding process and bagging process where I would also assume it gets handles. I do agree that a new suit that was hanging in a store could use more time in the dryer on the initial de-adsorb, but not to that extent.

    I suspect that some hunters might NOT want to use scent control because of the challenge presented. I am sure that there are people that look at eliminating the need to mind the wind the same as having sole access to 800 acres worth of groomed/uneducated mature bucks. Being someone who cannot hunt more than a few days a year, I WANT those advantages, but mostly I want the knowledge that those advantages exist and how to correctly apply those advantages. Regardless, keep doing what you are doing! I am going to do my first saddle hunts this year with an ESS. I watch all of your vids. They are invaluable to a "casual' hunter like me. Great info on this one! Looking forward to part 3. I am pretty sure I know the answer to this but I have to ask and I’d like your opinion. I have been very successful over the years hunting from the ground, due to not wanting to lug a big climber in the woods. The past two seasons I’ve hunted out of a saddle, and my success has gone up even more. I am a hugeeee fan of a leafy suit to break up my outline. I put in a lot of time and effort on scent control anyways but buying into scent lock even more watching your videos. So my question is. Will the scent lok still be effective if i wear my leafy suit overtop of it, or am I just wasting my time? Yes and in the next video, treat your leafy wear just as I do my Rivers West raingear which is discussed in the video. I wear merino wool a lot, I just use Icebreaker instead of FirstLite. Merino wool by itself has some odor adsorptive capacity. It's all about where they hunt. As I've mentioned hundreds of times on podcasts, in my books, in articles and on this channel, if you hunt in an area with lots of mature bucks with minimal to zero hunting pressure, you don't have to be a good hunter to kill a mature buck as you will at some point during the season, get an opportunity to take one. The odds are just in your favor no matter how you hunt. The TV shows are a solid testimonial for this FACT. If you went and hunted whitetails in an enclosure where there are a lot of mature bucks and they all move during daylight, you don't pay unless you kill one, so no matter your skill as a hunter, you will kill one.

      Me too, listening to John nearly 30 year( probably around 26 years to be exact) experience with it and going off my own experience with it which is admittedly only one year, but I can honestly say I didn't pay any attention to the wind and I had deer all around me and I was never busted ( missed ah 100 inch 2-1/2 year old tho, clean miss inch over his back I think my anchor point was off). That never used to happen. I'd hear deer blow from far away and I'd never even see them( not all the time I'd still see deer but it would happen alot)I'd just hear the blowing from far away and never even see them. One time when I was ah teenager,(no scent lok) i rattled in probably ah 3-1/2 year old ( North east highly pressured state) and he came trotting in, I could see him from ah long distance away coming down over the hill and when he got about 45 yards away it was like he hit ah wall. He stopped and whent to circle around me,and just turned around and walked back the direction he came. And I've had other situations like that but that just one of the more memorable experience I have had. So if I use to get busted with out the scent lok and then I use it for ah year and I never get busted the whole year not paying attention to the wind, I have to go off my own experience and assume it works. plus if u watch any of John's videos it seems like he he doesn't play around with equipment that doesn't perform as intended, so I highly doubt he would use ( nearly 30 years) and promote it as passionately as he does if he hasn't seen prove of it's effectiveness and if it didn't perform as intended he wouldn't use it, as simple as that.. this guy will tell u the best handsaw to get, what's the best steps to use, boots, saddle etc..He doesn't play around with equipment that doesn't do what it's suppose to or perform like it's suppose to.

      Thanks Darrell and don't let any bloviators detract you from making your point. They want to stifle the technology because many are from a talk forum that doesn't allow scent control to even be discussed. Many of them are very close minded and want to stifle things they don't or more than likely, can't do because they are either too lazy or they are not detail oriented enough to do the process. I have had friends get kicked off that sight for being pro scent control. I've never been on it.

      @@leatherdaddy4955 You are correct Ryan, if an equipment doesn't work for me, it's given away or sold at a garage sale. No use for inferior products.
