So if we are fortunate enough to have Barry back on maybe consider having Gene come on with him on a 3 way call. Those two together would be pure gold. No time limit. Just let them go on about hunting experiences together and share stories. It would be a breath of fresh air. Hard not to smile when I hear them speak. Fantastic job guys!
I’m 72 and still getting after it. Now I’m trying to instill some of what I’ve learned to my son,son in law and a couple of their friends. The Wenzels started the fire burning. I think I still have some of their videos.
Wow, this is Great !! My Idols and Mentors from "Back In The Day" I drove around the country back in the late 80's and early 90's to all the "North American Whitetail Seminars" just to Listen & Learn from Gene & Barry. After 47 years of strictly Bowhunting , I owe all my Big Buck success to Gene & Barry. Reading Gene's Books ( I still have them, autographed by Gene) was a revolution in the way I hunted from then on. First thing I did was get rid of my Baker & T.S.S "rattle-trap", Climbing Treestands, and still have 4 Loc-On "Limit" Hang-On Treestands, (7-1/2lbs.) They don't make them ,like that anymore. I also "Learned how to Hunt Cornfields" From Gene... "Just Burn Them Down !!! " L.O.L's. At 63 they still are my motivation, to get out and Bowhunt, Love You Guys, God-Bless !
I've been fortunate to hunt with Barry a number of times. His knowledge of the game woods is exceptional. Not to mention he's fun as heck to be around! 👍🏻🏹🎯🦌🐻💯🇺🇸
WOW! This was a GREAT 👍 SHOW! I first saw Gene and Barry at the very first Coverdale traditional archery shoot in Indiana. They are an American treasure trove! Thank you Hunting Beast 🙏
Wise choice for a guest, not only for the hunting knowledge, but for his life experience. Respect your elders!!! Dont get carried away with the "new" technology, the ABCs of some of the older ways are the place to start.👍
Man, Montana in the 1970s & 1980s- Wensel Brothers, Paul Schaefer, Chuck Adams. And no development in a lot of those beautiful river valleys? Sounds legendary.
Alot of wisdom there. Glad you guys had him on. I had vhs tapes of him and his brother when I was a kid. I got to meet them in Harrisburg PA years. Chuck Adam's was another favorite. He would be great to have if you can get him. I'm definitely going to try to slow down and think more.
Excellent share , need to have Barry on again. Lots of history here. Need more of these to show younger folks how we got here and maybe understand why we have the opinions we have. Thanks.
It was great listening to this episode. Barry is a wealth of knowledge and as a relatively new hunter I really appreciate all of you and the information that you share. The best part that they for me was to watch Dan’s face and he just looked like a kid in a candy store. You know he was just listening to someone that really influenced him along the way and that was great to see that smile in his face and how much he appreciated Barry.
You guys have my upmost respect I am 53 years old and have been hunting and growing up hunting with my father taking me even when I was in diapers I hunt deep and I hunt swaps and I have been very successful once again I have watched you guys a lot and respect you guys a lot keep up all the hard work good job. I am I have an 840 several other states since leaving my State and North Carolina to Chase bigger box and have found hunting to be much easier with carry my hunting style out of state and have been very successful And I up my standards very much I’ve got three preference points for Iowa I’m excited about getting the drawl to go this year not sure what public land I will go on but I will be zone 4 or 5 hopefully that will be good enough
Two books changed my life, one was Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails. The other was In Pursuit of trophy whitetails by Rothaar. Just went and dug both books out of drawer.
@@charlesleblanc6638 Holy cow no kidding. What another great interview. Didn’t think about that? I wonder how Rogers sons would be to interview? Roger told me and told me in late 80’s to BUY LAND IN IOWA! I didn’t listen but one of my friends listened. And my friend that listened fairly easily shoots 2 big bucks every year.
@@T-Mak-s7x OK so you knew Roger personally. Must of learned some tricks from that old farm boy ! I always wondered how these old hunting legends would of fended in an area with low deer density and lopped sided Buck/Doe ratio.
@@charlesleblanc6638 Roger was such a wonderful man so was his wife wonderful. I sold Roger his grinding wheels for making his Snuffer’s. I remember shooting 200 grain Snuffers on 2219’s. Wonder what those weighed?
Running into the younger generation of hunter's on public land is a complete nightmare. They look at other hunter's like HOW DARE YOU COME HUNT HERE. 99 percent of the younger guy's I run into and try saying good morning to or how are ya'll doing today LOOK AT ME LIKE I JUST THREW A TURD IN THEIR MOUTH The level of disrespect nowadays is at an ALL TIME HIGH. But they want likes on the interweb.
Dan when I go to order my beast stand setup you should autograph my stand for me before you ship it out!! That would be a blessing for sure if that’s possible! 🙏🏻
@backwardshatnation zoom out my friend. See the big picture. If hunting doesn't become social no one cares, the video games win, woodsmanship is lost to history and hunting potentially gets outlawed
You can thank hunting social media for the public land crowding... just so everyone is aware. Stop filming hunts and putting them on the internet and gaslighting public land hunting. Its ruining the experience for everyone.
I hope I had something to do with that... More people hunting and on our side, rather than sitting in bars or causeing trouble... Im certainly glad more people are choosing to hunt. But Im not a greedy person.
@@thehuntingbeast I don't want to give the impression of greed. None of us should be. But when things get advertised at the volume they are to the volume of people receiving it, you are going to get more bad actors and people in it for the wrong reasons. I want good quality hunting for my kids like I had growing up and the way the landscape is changing, the over crowding, leasing up land, all because of shows and social media influence. The community needs to start asking its self (un-biased) whether we are doing more harm than good to the future of hunting. I want people to enjoy the outdoors and hunt FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. More important (as we have enough hunters on the landscape nationwide) we need to educate others on why hunting is necessary. Recruiting more hunters is not the way to the future. I genuinely wish you the very best, Dan. But on behalf of more people than you realize, social is hurting hunters.
@@EthanPageHunter If people are watching folks like Dan, the public lands will be a far better place. Dan's out there picking up litter, not messing w/ other peoples stuff, and teaching hunters how to use woodsmanship instead of hunting over bait. My experience of public land has been beer cans, illegally set treestands and shooting lanes cut, rude hunters that think that its "their" spot because they've hunted there for 20 years... Dan is doing a big part in making the public lands a better place by teaching hunters the right way to do it.
I’ve noticed a big increase in bow hunters on public land. I figured it was internet related. Its a changing world. Like the spread of CWD. Who’s to blame for what? Life’s not fair or easy. Just try to enjoy the ride.

Thanks Dan for sharing Barry’s wisdom. Barry and Jean were gods in the early 80’s. This interview was incredible.
All I can say is thank you! Thank you for bringing one of the legends of bow hunting to your podcast!
I really admire Barry and his brother Gene. Two of the greatest men to ever pick up a bow.
Awesome! The Wensels are legends! Thank you!
Another epic listen. The Wensel's were heros for a lot of us old guys. You both did great at 'standing aside' and letting Barry ramble. Kudos
One of my heros growing up. Thanks for having Barry on the show.
