My first cut away!

  • I was learning barrel rolls on my new R-bird 2 and after 2 good rolls I got stuck on my back and started flat spinning really fast. I closed my wings and tried to turn over but couldn't. I was starting to get dizzy so decided to open my main before I passed out. I expected it to have a malfunction and it had a crazy bowtie where the bridle was wrapped around the canopy. It was uncontrollable but I was able to get it to fly straight. I had enough altitude so decided to unzip my wingsuit before cutting away. This was jump 378. Any constructive suggestions are appreciated!

    Had a ton of altitude, recognized the malfunction instantly. Had time to weigh options. Unstable canopy? I don't hear a ton of wind, and there's no spinning. Everything was calm enough for him to unzip his wingsuit. Y'all are freaking out more than HE is lol! Can't actively fly with a panicky personality. A+!

    From my own experience - when that flat spin starts, it does so quick and without warning. Well done on getting to your main pilot chute....it was always going to be a funky deployment (I love the "oh fuck" moment at the line over), but at least it got you feet to earth and in a good position for the reserve to open nicely. Hope you got all your gear back.

    Cool head is always key to emergencies! But I’d just say personally, especially for those who aren’t as experienced, if a malfunction is stable but you can’t fix, don’t fumble around and waste unnecessary altitude, just go for your emergency procedures. Just because your malfunction is stable now doesn’t mean it won’t turn bad later, no need to increase unnecessary risk.

    My instructor has over 3500 jumps. He never had a cut away. He always packed his chute and paid attention to details. When others did it they were trustworthy. It is no garante but it greatly boosts your confidence and also reduces the chances of a malfunction when the chute is packed properly. Overall i d say your decisions and actions were appropriate. Thank s for sharing.

    Good job getting that bowtie to fly but you can tell it was unstable as hell and ready to snap on you. I would have chopped straight away rather than being caught off guard while unzipping and possibly thrown into a high G spin. Happened to me once on a line over where the spin was pretty rough so I had trouble getting my arms to the handles for a few seconds. Better to chop as soon as you have a chance for a clean breakaway. Well done!

    • @rahulshah26
      @rahulshah26  7 лет назад +27

      Sky Dive yeah you're totally right i was gonna cut away much sooner but after I pumped my rears to get my canopy flying stable I started thinking maybe I could land it for a few seconds but then I started thinking logically and realized I had to get rid of it asap. This was my first cutaway so I didn't know I shouldn't unzip before cutting away. I was worried about me getting into a spin if I cut away without unzipping but now
      I understand the reserve opens so fast spins are probably not gonna happen and it's easy to get out of them because I had so much altitude. I've learnt my lesson and next time I'll cut away asap! Blue Skies bud!

    • @vornamenachname3373
      @vornamenachname3373 3 года назад +4

      You could get a belly reserve in general but that's rather impossible when flying a wingsuit.
      But the reserve is usually built differently, and quite differently and much more elaborately packed by a rigger (pro). The focus is on a most reliable and quick opening.
      Above that? *The reserve always opens!* It is my strong believe that someone without this mentality should refrain from skydiving because they might become a danger to themselves and to others.

    • @greg5478
      @greg5478 2 года назад +2

      Every skydiver is bound to perform cutaways one time or another. This is statistics. So probabilities if having a bad main opening are low but the more you practice and the bigger they get. However, two bad openings in a single jump, I think that the odds are way way more than twice lower.
      In addition to that, reserve parachute are made and prepared in a way that makes a badopening extremely unlikely. Reserve canopies are the one used by base-jumpers as main canopy.
      Last thing to remember is that almost every death in this sport is due to human mistake. Gear is rarely the problem.

    • @ov4457
      @ov4457 2 года назад +2

      @@greg5478 the chance of needing to cut away is statistically about 1 in a 1000. The reserves are much more reliable but if we would assume it would also be 1 in a 1000 I think statistically that would make the chance of both failing like 0,0001%
