The thing about marriage, from a practical standpoint, is that it comes automatically with a whole bunch of legal protections. For example, if someone needs to make medical decisions. It’s not the most fun to think about, but . . . you know.
100% agree. The only thing that could sway me to get married would be to protect my partner and make sure they inherite etc
But financially you'll actually have more disadvantages. If you're unemployment you'll get less money from the state if you have a partner for example. At least where I'm from

My mum and dad were together 24 years. He passed away suddenly aged 53. I was 11. They were not married because they thought "the state doesnt have to acknowledge our love". Basically my mum was left alone with no money, she was the one having shitty incomes...if they were married, my mum would have gotten a sum of money every month from my dad s work and from the state....I wouldn't have to move to a shitty neighborhood and go to a shitty high school. I am perfectly okay now, got a phd and my dream job but I kept thinking about how my mom s life had been impacted by this. I just got a kid and I need to convince my boyfriend that I met 10 years ago to get married (just the paper not the party) so I know my son won't live what I had to live when I lost my dad.
@@cl3109 honestly sounds so rough. I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. Marriage isn’t just about love, it’s a legal contract (which is what it was meant to be in the first place). I don’t need a piece of paper to know how much I love my partner, but I do need it in case something happens to either of us, and for so many other reasons (insurance, mortgage, loans etc.) also, if you’re trying to adopt children being married significantly increases your chances.

It's refreshing to hear you guys talk about money in a relationship where you don't split finances but are also obviously very intertwined in your lives. I think we often think about "equal" and not "equitable". You can have an unequal split of finances in a relationship that is still equitable and that both parties have decided on together (as in not a financial abuse situation). You're both lovely and this was so enjoyable!

Courthouse wedding is the best choice I ever made. You can make it as fancy or as simple as you want and save your money for a celebration or meal after with your loved ones.

My husband and I have been together for 14 years (married for 2) and to this day we keep our finances separate. We have a "house account" that we both deposit money into for the mortgage and certain bills, but I have my own account that my payroll goes into, and he has his. It works for us and I don't see that changing anytime soon. His friends were telling him that they combine finances with their spouses - as in all payrolls go into one account and it's for the two of them- and that shit gave me anxiety lol. Hell no.
Also, congratulations on recovery Nick! I've been sober for 11 years from alcohol and my husband isn't in recovery.. but he chooses to not drink because of me. Thankfully it's never been an issue with us.

Edited one last time - the biggest reason my husband and I got married (after being together for 12 years) was so that we would be each other's legal next of kin. If something happens to me medically, I want him to be able to say what happens to me.. not my mom.. and he wants the same. But you can also have papers drawn up that will cover you if you don't want to get married married. But that was a huge reason for us. He knows me better than anyone else.. HE is my next of kin.. not my actual kin. He's covered as my legal partner, and vice versa.
100% My husband and I have been married 27 years and still have separate finances with the exception of the ‘house account’ that the mortgage and taxes come out of. I’m and A-type personality and I have a strict budget and track my spending. He’s more relaxed about his bills and just keeps it “all in his head”. My way wouldn’t work for him and his way wouldn’t work for me but everything is paid in full on time and neither of us have consumer debt. You just have to find what works for you.
My parents did the same for their marriage. They just went out to a restaurant with their witnesses and the lawyer after being together for decades. They had arranged most of the paperwork years before for them to be legally protected while not being married, but from a tax perspective on their region it ended up being easier for them to be married if one of them died and left everything to the surviving partner (not a very romantic reason lol)

It may be just a piece of paper, but there are so many rights and protections allotted to spouses. For us it was worth it, as it was for your parents.
We got married at city hall with just my siblings there.. and they were only there because they absolutely insisted lol. It was just going to be my husband and I. We didn't care to make a big deal about it.

My fiancé (husband next month!) and I have separate bedrooms. This is my first time living in an apartment that I got to decorate myself and so I wanted to be able to decorate my own personal space - we also have always both worked from home so our rooms double as offices. If one room were a specified office and the other were part bedroom/part office, then we felt that one person would basically be getting one and a half rooms and the other would only have half of one. And then we sleep together most nights in whichever room we choose - unless one of us is out late or has to be up super early in the morning. It's honestly been incredible and we plan on things staying this way until we have children.

I don't really understand why people feel urged to expose their intimacy on social media. It's quite embarrassing he needs to explain if he clean also the house. That's nobody's business. It's something what is between you guys and you are supposed to feel fine together. I don't think it is healthy to share privacy and your life with the whole world.

I've been working to quit wine for almost a year, it's extremely extremely challenging -- and that is SO COOL that he's 13 years sober. That's SUCH a huge deal. Great work, Nick! Omg love this video. I have to add my bf and I who have been together almost 2 years get the weirdest, funniest, most awkward responses when we tell people we sleep in separate rooms haha. It just works so amazing for us because we go to sleep at different times and we cherish that time before bed to have alone time and space.
