    Welcome to the club mate! Been doing water-cooling back since 2004. I had around 5 leaks in this period 1 catastrophic, 2 almost deadly. 3 Out of 5 those leaks have been from swiveled 90 degrees fittings. I have always used Koolance parts. After careful analysis through the years here are my observations:
    1: 90 degree fittings even though quite practical are more fragile and susceptible to leaks. A leak from the o-ring is less likely that the part rotating. Especially if it has a lot of weight form tubing and other fitting on top of it. This can happen if heavy spliters are above. They might give up from a bumps or vibrations through time.
    2. As you correctly noted many times the system wont leak when turned off. When running only the pump the leak will be subtle and when the electronics also run the leak is more pronounced. This is because the pressure depends on the temperature. The physics ideal Gas Law; PV= nRT where P is pressure and V is volume, T is temperature, n number of moles and R the Gas constant. Also to note that water in its liquid form is non compressible. My point you is if your reservoir is filled so high up the top you don't give any Volume for the remaining air atoms in the system to expand as the temp rises. This will it turn rise temp and water pressure. Your reservoirS are quite big enough to avoid air from water vortex effect the pump creates. 3/4 to 1/2 of them filled would help. The higher they system pressure the higher the probability fittings while give in.
    3. As with everything all part in a system have a MTBF ( mean time between failure). This holds true for every part in a WC system. Trivial for metal not for the rubber rings. Better to buy spare ring and replace them in a system after 5 years if u want to be safe. They cost dirty cheap but it is always a hassle. This is also why important why you must not turn the fittings to much during assembly; just the right a mount. Too much might create fractures on the material not visible to the eye sometimes.
    Summing it up:
    Koolance is not specifically to blame about my leaks.
    Avoid putting angled fittings above or near critical components
    Avoid putting weight on top of angled fittings. Always handle them with a lot of care...
    Fill you reservoir 3/4 of the size if you can.
    Plan replacing part through the years according to each part MTBF ( pump , rings, .., etc) or go for fail safes like leak detectors and control boards.
    I still Watercool xD
    I'd hate to a catastrophe to a system like yours. Plumbers exist for a reason :p

      One thing I never understood. Well +JayzTwoCents you don't count due to Nizzi, but people will go out and spend 20-45k on a car. A freaking car to drive to and from work to. Then spend another 15-20k modding it, or a motorcycle. I've been there and done that. Still will when I can afford it. But really how much is $6500 for a set of tools? The tools you earn your living with? How much does a snap on rollaway toolbox cost filled with tools? Much more than his PC. Priorities people. I'm a software developer and my machine is in the 2.5k range build on latest gen parts, maybe 3.5K if you add up water cooling and peripherals. I tried to edit some videos and used all of my 32 gigs of RAM and the damn thing crashed. So if I were a video editor your damn straight I would invest in my tools. More cores, more ram and definitely plenty of graphic horsepower. Time is money and when say a software company like mine bills out for x hundreds of $'s an hour, any time saved is money earned.
      Relatively, his tools are cheap people thing about priorities.

    No matter how good and failsafe water cooling becomes, I'll just never be able to bring myself to use it. It's 1: too complicated to be worth it to me. 2: too much responsibility/maintenance to always keep an eye on it along with any other regular stuff that needs be done with it. and 3: just too much stress thinking about what would happen if ONE thing ever went wrong with it. Then again, it's not like I'm going to enter any serious gaming competitions where every bit of performance matters, so I guess I'm not really the audience this is meant to appeal to.

      +super piggy over time, with whatever components you use, they don't stay as cool as they would have when coming straight out of the box. So i guess there it's purely aesthetics and future proofing. And of course those who don't want to custom cool can always use AIOs which are much more safer but not really the best future proofing.

      +Joeyb Theman Are you scared to use your kitchen sink? Are you scared to flush your toilet? Probably not, because you know they were assembled correctly by professional plumbers. But those plumbers didn't have the option to assemble your water setup outside of your house, and then install it in the house, so they made sure they did the job correctly. You can assemble a loop outside your PC to test it, there's nothing to fear.

    • @K31TH3R
      @K31TH3R 8 лет назад

      +CreoleRep7 That is not true at all. The Thermal Design Power (TDP) of a processor or GPU is the same when it's 20 years old as it was when it came out of the box. If the transistors in the component have deteriorated enough to actually increase their heat output, the component was likely unstable or malfunctioning long before that point was ever reached.

    Reading the comments it is clear to see that few understand how air cooling and liquid cooling work. For starters liquid cooling is just another form of air cooling as it relies on air passing through the radiators to cool the liquid. Air cooling and liquid cooling both cool through a process called thermal conduction. Thermal conduction is the transfer of internal energy by microscopic diffusion and collisions of particles, the speed and effectiveness of thermal conduction varies depending on the material used. The conduction process can be made more efficient by increasing surface area and/or increasing air flow allowing for faster thermal conduction. Air cooling relies on conduction through a heat sink usually using pipes to efficiently conduct to a large surface area, the fins. Unfortunately heat sinks reach a point of diminishing returns beyond a certain size to the point they don't offer any more cooling performance. Water cooling does also reach a point of diminishing returns, but it has a greater potential to conduct than air cooling due to the fact that liquids conduct much better than gases. Liquid cooling is able to move this heated liquid away from the block using a pump, so in turn has the ability to conduct to multiple heat sinks (radiators) and this is the reason that water cooling is more efficient than air cooling, its able to conduct better and to a larger surface area. You should think of liquid cooling more like air cooling, but with the ability to connect many heat sinks (radiators) together. One more thing, usually All In One liquid cooling products are cheap with only one small radiator, low quality liquids and small pumps, so they don't perform much better or they perform worse versus air coolers of the same price.

      +TheOne AboveAll Well, ss he said, the more joints you have, the higher the risk. If you don't use a lot of joints all over the place, then there's a low chance for it to leak. Always tighten each fitting though. That decreases the chance for leaking as well. But don't tighten it too much. That'll risk breaking the tube and then there's gonna be a leak for sure. Golden rule... As far as I've heard, is to tighten the fittings as much as possible with ones fingers only.. Or till it feels sealed.
      I'm no professional, but seen from a logical viewpoint, then it gives plenty of sense that if you use few joints around the electronic part of your system, then you have to be pretty darn unlucky for it to leak. You can also always test a watercooling system, before installing it on your setup. Test it with distilled water though. As that is what most fluid consists of. If you also run two seperate loops - one for your CPU and one for your GPU(s) - then you're even less likely to have catastrophical leaks that breaks everything.. And you don't have to drain your entire system to repair or change something :)
      Soft tubing, few joints and seperate loops. Those are what I would say is the safest bets on a custom watercooling setup.
      But you can also just buy premade watercoolers for CPUs. They will only watercool the CPU, but the blame won't be on you, if they leak :)

    • @TheGIANTgonads
      @TheGIANTgonads 8 лет назад +12

      For most people i think the cost of replacing MB/cpu/gpu far outweighs the benefit of having a custom loop in the case of failure. For some people parts of their income is dedicated to the recreational modification of their PCs (much like some with cars) and can afford a $1000 setback but most people are coming into PC building having saved up for months living off rice noodles or are trying to get parents to pay for it.

I remember one summer where I was at a friends house, and he had to put 2 bags of ice, one infront of his intake fan, the other on the top of his case, because the summer was so hot, the computer was overheating every 15 minutes. The interesting thing was that the ice bags actually helped and the computer didn't overheat until the bags melted!

      +Benno Lenno Depending on what your needs are a closed loop AIO (all in one) is not technically challenging on you. I saw a vid recently saying EK have a AIO soloution available now (actually on this channel, EK Predator it's called), there is also NZXT (which I have on my cpu only, with a 280mm radiator with two 140mm fans in push pull config with the top 200mm case fan). My graphics card is still air cooled (Sapphire Tri-x, which is three fans). But I would like to build a fully liquid cooled system when I can afford it. And I,m not really too worried about stuff that can go wrong, after all we learn from our mistakes (nothing ventured, nothing gained)and in life shit happens, you just need to have a contingency plan, then hope you don't have to call on it.

  • @karilyn1094

    If you ask me the risk of leaking with a custom loop is significantly less than with an AIO such as Corsair. When you build a custom loop everything is in your hands and you can have nearly full control over it. Most of the leaks from custom loops are the result of either negligence or simply human error. But the more you learn from it, the more of those errors you can root out with subsequent builds.
    Compression fittings are quite secure and it takes a lot of force for the tubes to simply pop off. At worst scenario, working compression fittings will unscrew themselves slightly because of rotational tension. This can easily be fixed by getting rid of that tension or stress, and screwing the fitting on more tightly. Any other failures from fittings is the result of unnecessary stress which can easily be remedied by giving the tubing enough slack.
    Apart from the fittings themselves, another possibly common source of leak is when people tend to forget to plug
    open ports or even tighten the existing plugged ports. So you can get micro leakage from radiators and GPU water blocks.
    A third source of leak is overtightening fittings to the point where the ports begin to crack. This goes for the reservoir, pump and water blocks etc.
    And a fourth and common source of leak is when people use too long screws for the radiators. When they mount it to the case or fan they punctuate the radiator with the long screws.

    Old topic, but just found this one... if I'd installed the tubing I would be putting it down to user error. 0.5 mm too long or too short on the length of tubing will be enough to cause more pressure to one side of the fitting, resulting in less pressure to the adjacent side, which would result in the leak. To the naked eye it can look like everything is centered, but very difficult to actually test that the tubing is neutrally centered inside the fitting. Even an extra quarter turn on the fitting nut can cause a grab which is enough to slightly off-center things enough for a leak. I've tested my theory too, by linking up piece by piece, until it is complete, then removing the whole thing and watching it flex slightly so that holding it up to where it is supposed to line up shows a slight difference and the need to flex slightly to rejoin the complete assembly. There is always a little guess work in the end... but most of it is done by feel, which is learned by experience.

    To be honest I always treat people that make blanket statements like I haven't had a single failure in X years with caution. I've been building computers as a kid with my father from the days when RAM was still in Kilobytes and you had to straighten out the legs of the chip and IRQ conflicts were something quite common. I know all too well that everything has a chance to fail. It doesn't matter how good you are, how many times you check. Give it enough time, enough products you've worked on and everything will eventually fail.

    1.) Spend $6500 on a single rig
    2.) Put water cooling in that rig

    • @TheChurchofCacti
      @TheChurchofCacti 9 лет назад +40

      Destess First of all he didn't spend $6,500. It's a sponsored PC for his channel. I think he paid like a grand out of pocket for some components. Secondly, if I was paying $6,500 for a rig I'd want it water cooled too. That's a lot of graphics cards crammed together and keeping them cool on air would be hard, especially with a huge overclock. Last but not least, Watercooling isn't that dangerous. He's had 1 leak in over 10 years of water cooling and it was barely just dripping out. Even had the drip been in the upper portion of his build most likely it wouldn't have done any damage as long as he caught it. It's easy to catch yellow fluid. Also in the rare event that distilled water does actually fry a component, just dry it and send it back for RMA and claim that it died on its own. 99% of the time you'll be sent back a new working component. I just put my first custom loop ever in my new build. It's worth $3,000 and I'm not worried at all =)

    • @Destess
      @Destess 9 лет назад +2

    • @TheChurchofCacti
      @TheChurchofCacti 9 лет назад +13

      Because your misinformed about the dangers. There is a risk of something bad happening, but it's not big enough to warrant not using the best form of cooling available. My Titan X never goes above 40 degrees C while gaming now with a huge overclock. It was getting into the mid\high 80's on air and that's with only 1 card

    I would love to do a water-cooled build, but this is exactly why I haven't. I have experience in high pressure hose building, including swivel fittings and adapters. All swivel joints rely on an elastomer o-ring to prevent leakage, usually nitrile (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber.) O-rings are subject to heat aging and oxidation. In other words, if you have the system long enough, it's going to leak. I'll probably still try one some day, but I'm fully aware of the possible headaches I'm inviting. lol I really admire your builds, by the way. Awesome and inspiring are the words that come to mind. :0)

      Water cooling is just air cooling with the water transferring the heat from the components to the heat sinks (radiator) instead of heat pipes. The advantage is being able to have much larger heat sinks than with air. The amount of energy that a heat sink can dissipate depends on its surface area. With CPU heat sinks like those from Be Quient, you don't really need water cooling for CPUs. But, the form factor makes this impossible for GPUs without extreme modding. But, people have had great success with CPU heat sinks put onto GPUs.
      As for your original comment, they have. It's called AIO water coolers. They have minimal failure points, and they use permanent fittings, which allow better sealing. There is no reason why someone couldn't try doing something similar with a custom loop.

    • @Wowzersdude-k5c
      @Wowzersdude-k5c 8 лет назад +13

      Two problems with that. 1) These pumps really aren't designed to push liquid with the viscosity (thickness) of any oil. 2) Mineral oil is not nearly as good of a heat transfer fluid as water. Water has a thermal coefficient of .67 K W/mK while mineral oil is at .162 W/mK. This means water is about 4 to 5 times better as a heat transfer agent.

      Water isn't conductive, the impurities in it are what make it conductive. If you used the type of water that has no impurities, wouldn't the computer be fine if it leaked?

    • @Wowzersdude-k5c
      @Wowzersdude-k5c 8 лет назад +11

      The problem is the water wont stay pure inside the loop. It will be making contact with metals (copper usually) and will pick up charged particles from that. So it WILL eventually be conductive.

    i love videos like this. this went wrong. now lets fix it. then u showed the problem explained the part that failed then talked about risks vs rewards and even questioned if water cooling was really a valid method for cooling over standard solutions.
    yeah benchmarks are nice ways to rate the value of products, however i will take real world results over graphs every time
    thank you so much for this video

    There's not much leak videos. Because, It could be bad for business.I like to see these kind of videos no matter what. So it keeps me aware on what may happen when you have a custom water cool system. That way I am focused with my build and gives me energy to continue to take care of my system. Great Video; "Jay"..

    Why do people even do liquid cooling? Like, other than the fact that it can be configured to look really cool, it seems useless. If you want liquid cooling for a "quiet PC" then why don't you just wear headphones instead? Or maybe just buy some very silent fans? I have super cheap fans that I don't even know the name of and my PC is like half as loud as my PS4. I understand some people want it for overclocking so their system stays super cool, but you can keep a system cool for the same price, or even less than the cost of a liquid cooling setup. On top of all that, we have the leaking problems. I know this isn't a very common thing, but it's something that could ruin your whole system, as for air cooling, if something breaks, you just buy a new one. It doesn't break anything else, it doesn't leak colored fluid everywhere inside your case.

    • @PopCornGT
      @PopCornGT 8 лет назад +3

      Can't agree more
      People want that because it looks 'cool' I once considered water cooling because my computer overheats but after considering I just change a casing which has a better air flow and when I added another 2 fans I think it's as good

    • @sireugeneyt
      @sireugeneyt 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah. Especially with the Noctua fans and all. They're silent and have great airflow. I even bought two last night for my new build.

    • @QuackPanda
      @QuackPanda 8 лет назад +1

      Most of the fluids that are used in water cooling won't damage the components. Some people like to have a super high overclock and air cooling won't cut it.

    • @sireugeneyt
      @sireugeneyt 8 лет назад

      ***** solomonshv Yeah of course. I'm just saying that I don't see the point of it being in a stock build, or even slightly overclocked. I can overclock my GPU a bit and the CPU cooler that came with the processor along with two fans seem to keep it at a normal temperature.

    • @QuackPanda
      @QuackPanda 8 лет назад +5

      ***** What are you even saying? No one that uses a custom loop doesn't overclock. That's one of them main reasons they do it.

    I thought about water cooling too, but the thought of leakage made me cautious. I keep fish too, and play about with that equipement, tubes can harden and even crack over time, especially when exposed to different tempratures, not to mention connectors, just ask any plumber.

      Zova dude this is a tiny chance, this guy's built loads of watercooled pcs and 1 has leaked, and anyway nothing was damaged he just needed 1 more fitting. If your are doing aggressive overclocking you NEED watercooling

    I am ASSUMING it probably can be attributed to atmospheric pressure and temperature change; causing the atoms in the rubber O-ring to contract when it is cooler in your location of operation but the hot fluid in the o-ring is expanding so the cooler side has more contracted atoms vs the expanded atoms on the hotter side! It probably created a pocket where the fluid escaped. You may also try Heat Shrink Tubing around your 90 and 45 joints to catch and prevent leaks. But the down side is you may never know if it is leaking to change that piece again before it becomes critical! Their is also the heat shrink tape used for sealing wires too and reinforce it with an apoxy on the ends to prevent leaks but the down side again is you may lose the ability to manipulate your piece movement when all is sealed. To change simply cut with an exacto or utility knife and use some citric acid or some form of a turpentine to remove the apoxy or super glue if you get some stuck on your tubes. "This is merely a hypothesis I am gathering from all of this!" TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK! I am an air cooled guy..... ( Hope it helps for another 11 years which is an awesome track record to me...)

    Just as a bit of side info to help you in the future, some fittings especially pressure seal things like you had fail. Only are leak proof while under pressure. The highter the pressure the better the seal, since the pressure is what's forcing the seal closed. Momentary laps in presume allow flid to get in the mating surface and won't become sealed until more pressure is applied or the surfaces have be cleaned of the lubricant.

    I think a solution to this problem might be the waterproof spray. If you ever decide to water cool your machine, make sure to use the waterproof spray to insulate the electrical components. Or you could just build a mineral oil fish tank pc.

    Mistakes happen. I think it was quite noble of you to admit that you had a leak because these things happen and its just the kind of risk you take in both aesthetics as well as performance when it comes to water cooling so I commend you for admitting you had a leak. good on you jay!
