    Why don't you try to use as coolant vodka, automotive rad fluid and distilled oil as a part 2 of "weird but working coolant"?

      +TommyThousandFaces Automotive fluid works just fine if used properly, It's what a lot of people including Jay used long before dedicated fluids were made for computers. You would need to dilute it to about a 10/1 ratio with distilled water, The coolant really just acts as a rust inhibitor and a biocide.

    If you want to make cusom colours make sure you keep in mind that this is subtractive colours
    mixing red and blue will make purple, but mixing in green will make it black rather than white
    It's not RGB (additive colour)
    So dkn't think in RGB but CYM :)

      BrendanD15 , rads for LASERs are no different from PC rads, just much cheaper.
      Car heater blocks cost $20 new.
      An entire front rad for a car costs less than many PC rads.
      The technology is no different. PC watercooler makers are gouging gamers, just like nVidia.

    +JayzTwoCents - Yo! I took that 'nano-fluid' you have used in previous builds and checked it out in the lab. Turns out there are no nano-particles / nano sized things in their fluids at all! I'm not sure what exactly they are, but the particles must be pretty big! (Maybe you could see them under a microscope?)

    Thanks so much for doing this video, Jay! I really enjoy your less scripted "let's play with this" style videos. I'd love to see you mess with different weird thermal paste materials, maybe use an old crappy athlon or core 2 duo if you've got something like that lying around. I'd also love to see what difference flow rate makes in a loop. I know it isn't much, I'm curious how low the flow rate has to be before you start losing cooking capacity. Or how high it has to be before it becomes potentially dangerous to components.
    Love your work, keep it up man!

  • @brandishwar

    The flush method you demonstrated is how I flush new radiators, with the exception that the fluid isn't looping around. Instead it's all going down the drain. Basically I just pour into an open reservoir and let the pump push the water through the radiator. That's enough to get a lot of the loose stuff, and then I let the water circulate through a large water filter for a while to get whatever else might be in there.

    slightly crazy question: would mercury work as a cooling fluid if you had a strong enough pump?
    it has exceptional heat transfer properties, no biocide required, no corrosion issues since there's no solution full of ions involved, and it would look ridiculously cool! you'd of course have to throw away the entire loop if you want to use something else cause there's no way you'd get that stuff out of the radiators, and it's more viscous than water and slightly poisonous, but would it work for, say, a year or two?

    • @rkark3360
      @rkark3360 8 лет назад

      .

    • @Dectura
      @Dectura 8 лет назад

      +givemeajackson While the thermal conductivity of mercury is higher than water, it can't hold nearly as much heat. Also due to the density no normal pump would suffice.

    • @givemeajackson
      @givemeajackson 8 лет назад

      Roope Saarela but if you have a really strong pump that also moves the loop fast, capacity would be irrelevant, right?

    • @metacustomcomputers3426
      @metacustomcomputers3426 8 лет назад

      +givemeajackson Mercury has a far far worse specific heat capacity:
      -Mercury: 0.14 kJ/kg K
      -Water: 4.18 kJ/kg K
      So performance-wise it would be worse than plain water + all the negative aspects that you already mentioned.

    I literally just completed my watercooling loop today :)
    I went with EK's Supremacy CPU block (for AMD FX8350), their D5 140ml Pump/Resovoir combo, and their Blood Red coolant dye with growth inhibitors. I have a single 280mm radiator for cooling.
    I used soft tubing for ease, since this is my first time doing a loop, and I absolutely love the final outcome. My temps dropped from high 50s to low 30s now.
    My next plan is to add my 970 to the loop with another radiator :)

      MrPoldekrosmol With all the parts, including compression fittings I forgot to mention, I paid about $300. I probably could have saved about $50 though. I ordered 2 bottles of dye just in case and only needed one, and I ordered a full roll of tubing, when I probably could have just bought 2 of the meter long pieces instead. I also had bought the radiator a long time ago on sale for like $40.

    If you want more of a burnt orange color, add a contrasting color, a blue to the loop. Just a drop or two, if you mix too much you'll get a brown, just like you do with adding any two contrasting colors together like red with green, and yellow with violet. But just a drop should help darken the loop color to the burnt orange you are seeking.

    Dude these videos are awesome, even if my next build isn't watercooled, definately going to go ham with a nice case and color scheme, maybe a corsair 750D for that dank glass view!

    A great pastel you should mix in the water is rubidium. It makes a cool sort of burnt black color in the tubes. It may make your stuff a little warmer, but it's a small price to pay for how cool it looks. It also makes it super easy to flush.

    Fun video Jay! Very intuitive... I'm changing my Gaming Rig/ Setup, color theme from red and black to a black/ grayish metal industrial look... So this video definitely helped. Just need a few more components to complete my water Cooling project👍🏾

    Jay, I think an interesting video would be somehow create a high heat loop to test in, and use white fluid to see what happens. Possibly with mixed metals in the rad and blocks? And possibly try different brands of dyes, and amounts to see what happens to the color over time. Probably more of a long term project, but I'd be really interested to see if A) you could replicate the problem you were having in Skunkworks™ and B) how consistent that effect would be when other variables are adjusted.

    • @Metatr0n
      @Metatr0n 8 лет назад +1

      +Rusty Schakelford The problem he had with skunkworks has nothing to do with the colouring.
      His problem was that he destroyed his own radiator by excessive "cleaning". He admitted that he "cleaned" the radiator by the excessive use of chemicals, acids and vinegar. Mayhems already said that Mayhems Pastel Pure Black turns brown due to copper-oxide in the loop. Same therefor goes for every other Pastel Colour. Where does copper-oxide in the loop come from? From corroding radiators. Why does a radiotor start to corrode? Well WTF was he doing with chemicals, acids and vinegar in the radiator? Copper is sensitive, of course it starts to corrode if you have no fucking clue what you're doing there.
      Corroding copper inside of the radiator is bad for every liquid inside of the loop, with or without Mayhems products in it. I wouldn't even wonder if his new loop starts to discolour in a few months, since he didn't replace the radiators of his GPU loop.

    Yeah, yeah, necroing the comments, but that sludge colour could actually make for a pretty awesome loop in like a post-apocalyptic themed setup. I'm picturing a case with stuff bolted to it to look like something out of mad max, then the loop is running that sludge.

    I love your volcom shirt in this video it's pretty much the only brand I wear so I felt compelled to comment. Also I learned quite a bit about mixing custom colors although I do not yet have a custom loop as they are pricey I will hopefully have one someday.

    Jay, you should make a badass cardboard pc. i did it awhile back with 2 motherboard boxes that were attached, but it was just with shitty hardware. it didnt have a graphics card it was just meant to be an essay/ video player. it never got any use, basically just a project, but you could totally go all out and make something really cool. I spent like 11 hours making mine

    Jay, fun video. Wouldn't it be cool to use a color light sensor to figure out optimal dye amounts / saturation curves. I have a prototype I made a while ago for skin color detection that I could send you. I would adapt it's firmware / GUI for a watercooling coloring test. Let me know.

  • @imac8175

    I think that if I were planning on trying this I would mix a small test sample first to see how dark the color can get. The last thing you want to do is dump a whole bottle of a light color into your white loop and end up with the color barely changing and looking so bad you have to start over.

    AND the fluid changes to red color when its hot and to blue color when its cold, within the nominal heat range of the machine - So you see it coming out of the condenser blue after cooling and turn red as it goes through exchangers sinking heat - then you can see how far the system is from thermal runaway if all the fluid turns red when the condenser is overcome with heat.
