seen _a LOT_ of drummers react to this. gotta say, none of them thought to slow it down while doing so. kudos man. by far the best breakdown i've seen. least poser drum review.
Wow thank you so much, that is a huge compliment! I tend to slow down drum parts when I see something I don't immediately understand. It was helpful here
@@teamfingahs4907 nah. when manerd sells out finally, sure. but nah. he does not like people recording, capturing or experiencing something that is not true to the original. he'd rather book a tour and you come to a live show and experience it without a phone or any electric device.
What bothers me the most is that if they have this recording then it stands to reason that there is recording of this entire show from the drum cam. And if there is we need to see it LOL
It's not meant to be duplicated. Even if someone gets the sticking pattern it won't be "correct". Part of Danny's brilliance is the FEEL, the spacing, the slight pushing and pulling. That stuff can't be taught.
Yeah I noticed it was doubles and by the end it was singles…crazy! That’s probably the most seamless transition from doubles to singles I’ve seen in a while
I hear it broken up slightly more than that - I hear 6, 6, 5, 6, 5, 5 (just based on where the downbeats are, mostly). It all adds up to 33/8 still, though!
The time signature in the verse is 33, like his Larry Bird shirt. Of course they do some 4/4 and 6/8 because they're Tool and they like to mix it up. I was luck to be at this show.
You are just as confused as most pro drummers that have watched and reacted to this the timing is really hard to even count , though some parts are 4/4 and 6/4 drum fill , it has a similar to 4/4 played in triplets or 33/8ths which is someone who is master at their skill
hahaha I tried but yea sometimes you gotta let the music consume you. I try to make my reaction videos educational in some ways but this was pretty complex
if you haven't seen them live man, you've got to do it. (not sure whether you have or not, but this goes for anyone reading this). they're not going to around forever. just saw them in november and they're just as good imo as they were ten years ago. unbelievable show.
Man I’ve been wanting to see them live for so long now…I’m planning on making it to the next show for sure and I want to see them front and center. I hope they’re at least around for another decade
Beome PNEUMA! SPIRIT/SOUL. It still baffles me any drummer can get to 21 without having heard Danny!!! He uses Mandala pads they have MANY zones! I think up to 32 on some.(BTW most of Fear Inoculum record is in variables of 7) i hope you've heard get to his solos 'cct' on FI & 'MERKABA' on Salival. Also Triad' the instrumental in 3 on 'lateralus'! Though I can basically say every song is a must hear for any musician. 'Triad' he does mostly Swiss triplets,3's and flam accents. It's also easier to count this out around 14min at the kick in. Its alternating 12/8,11/8,10/8.Off subject,my dog passed away as this song played. So it will always be in me. RIP GUS😢 go pick up his signature VF sticks, they have a slightly tapered handle. But they are beast! Rosetta Stoned is my request. Or 46 & 2 is also must for all drummers! The breakdown alone. Also the poly rhythm in 'eulogy'. You've jumped down a rabbit hole with Deity Danny. Its really hard to pick from their catalog. And i should probably watch the whole video b4 responding next time. Sorry bro..🕉 last thing, ever see Thomas Pridgedon with The Mars Volta? Check out 'wax simulacra'..kinda short,INTENSE & sweet!
Danny has said the toughest song for him is Grunge. Don't feel bad, lots of drummers couldn't find 1. Mike Portnoy of Dream Theatre did this song on Drumeo, check it out
Great reaction and breakdown. I felt like you were translating a foreign language. It took a while for you to smile and say wow....and I appreciated that.
"It was too hard to count..." Welcome. This is how it often begins. You try to count it - You try to interrupt it - You try to relate... - Next thing you know, you have joined the Tool Army.
You're so focused on trying to figure out time signatures, you are totally missing a lot of technique. Watch some of that polyrythnic stuff especially in the 11th min, and you will see he is playing Swiss triplets.
He’s doing kick with the right, high hat with left, but I believe somebody said he sets the high hat pedal reversed, so it opens when he steps down, which allows him to alternate right foot / left foot while keeping the beat with both. Maybe?
He's kind of known to move things around on his kit based on set list. Songs like numa he has to have the hi hat directly in front of him to effectively play it the way wants. His tech probably ran in and moved it right after this song lol

i hope they've secretly been recording footage like this for all of them over the years and will one day release it. 🙃
DUDEE!! That would be beyond amazing
They have recording everything they’ve done from what I have heard…
Even live performances?@@russellpippin550
They record every live show yes. They VIDEOED some of their Lateralus tour they’ll release some day apparently.

yes definitely, they must have a whole archive
I always think it's interesting when drummers. Try to break this video down and then they just get lost because danny sort of does his own thing
Yea, some drum patterns of his I can count but others like stuff in 33 can be tough to subdivide
It's not meant to be duplicated. Even if someone gets the sticking pattern it won't be "correct". Part of Danny's brilliance is the FEEL, the spacing, the slight pushing and pulling. That stuff can't be taught.
He's very hard to follow because the man never comes down on the 1. Trying to count with him is futile
@@timeRitualI heard the whole thing is 33/8 😮
I’m convinced none of his limbs act in the same time signature ever. Even when he’s not drumming
when he has conversations in public, his limbs do 4 different things. hilarious.
I've seen convincing arguments that it's 33: 6,6,5,6,5,5.
Its at 114bpm.
The time signatures are 12/8, 11/8 and 10/8
Btw. The beginning is double stroke seamlessly into single stroke.

I'm not guessing at it. Look up the drum tab/ sheet music
lost keys + rosetta stoned is a blast when enjoyed as a single track.

I really agree on having the hi-hat in the middle. It's your most used drum so put it in a place where you can access the rest of the kit quickly.
That right leg is definitely pumping the bass
