That's a sawtooth wave with live adjustments to VCF and VCO. And it's not an arpeggiator. It's a sequencer. :) Other than that, they have sounded this good since the first time I saw them in the late 80s, which was for this CD release actually. They went from three guys behind keyboards to a full-on stage show in the early 90s. If I remember right, the violator tour was the first one with a full band.

Always hate that this is the version everyone reacts to ,I know it is because it has the most views but this is why it does. The live drums for this song in my opinion are garbage, and the stupid drum solo they do now I cant stand. The song was more impactful with the electronic bass that used to be used vs live drums now..but oh well.. at least people are listening to DM.

A fan since 85 and I love them more now than when I was 12 of course. 🖤 Black Celebration is my favourite album. It is dark and a bit industrial goth as well. But Not Tonight is my all time favourite of theirs.

Martin is playing a Gretsch White Falcon on this song. He has such a huge collection of those guitars. BTW, Gretsch made a Martin Gore Signature which looks like the green double anniversary. Nice review. You could also check Enjoy The Silence Live In Paris... Martin played a great funky line with an amazing sound at the end of that song... wonderful :)

FYI Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs) worked with Martin Gore on many songs from their latest Momento Mori.

This is my fave all time, from Music For the Masses in 1987. I saw them in 1988 at Madison Square Garden. I'm 70 but this is definitely on my life's soundtrack. Love them, esp the early stuff. Vince Clarke.....
