What a classic song. Excellent analysis. A tighter, more full sounding band has never graced a stage.

As many times as I've listened to or played this song I've never wasted my time on the time signatures. They're relative. Play the piece as creative architecture. Relax, flow, drive through each portion or segment as each bit presents itself. Focus on each member's contribution of composition. Seal the deal.
Sorry, but if musicians need to digest time signature changes they aren't confident or comfortable enough with their arsenal of playing skills or keeping time. If you aren't excellent at both move along. lol
On of the many brilliant aspects of Rush is their ability to feed one another creatively. It's almost like they pre-set little challenges in various stages in their music during each song and they prop each other up seamlessly.

Personally, I appreciate reactors who don't spend their time counting time signatures as if it really matters or describing how the drumsticks are held or which drums and cymbals are used. Music is the end product and is what we listen to. I prefer reactors who interrupt the song in a reasonable way first of all to conform to certain ''rules'' of use and then wait 'til the end to give their impressions. I don't know of anyone who listens to music while counting time signatures. Authentic reactions belong to reactors who analyze the feelings the music gives them. The technical craftmanship may be raised in the conversation but generally speaking, it's always displayed with no explanation required especially when it's live on stage for everyone to see with their own eyes.

@@JeanPaillard-to1hx sure that’s a valid opinion. As a musician I like count time signatures because it’s fun and part of the technical side of music which I have studied in the past. I have other reactions which are more of what you described though. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for getting to this favorite of mine off Permanent Waves. This is one of the rare times where I actually prefer the studio version.
For a really Bad Ass 4k Rush experience check out the Stick Hits version of Between the Wheels live in Germany. That is mind blowing. Seriously, crank it up for a truly amazing performance.

Saw this wonderful song at my first Rush concert in 1980, a few more times in 80-81, and then on my very last shows in 2015. One of my very favorite live Rush songs! As a guitar player, Alex's notes are relatively easy to learn, but HARD to play properly in the ever-changing tempos and time signatures. Just love it! Glad you enjoyed it.

From what I could tell watching it, this song seemed like a complex song on guitar. As a drummer, it's similar in the sense that shifting between many time signatures takes practice.

Permanent Waves has a lot of fusion like elements to the songs. The ending riffs where Neil gets so obscure is repeating patterns of 6/8, 7/8. Neil is subdividing within that structure in ways I’d have to sit down and study to figure out Lol.

  • @markjohnson4217
    @markjohnson4217 3 месяца назад +4

The time signature patterns are essentially a 5/4-6/4 repeating measure at the beginning. Then the heavy section is in 4/4 until it shifts into an extended measure of 5/4, 5/4, 5/4, 6/4
Then the outro is just a repeating pattern of 6/8-7/8.
    Then the big finale....
    I'll get back to you,
    Lol.....

I had completely forgotten about this song! I loved Rush when I was a kid/teen....and still do, of course. Neil Peart was amazing, as were all of them. I never could get over how much there were only 3 guys making this incredible music. Nostalgia gut punch.

That's one of the things that initially drew me into Rush...their ability to sound like 6 people are playing with only 3 players. Best trio ever!

I saw all of their tours since '77. The stage setup, with the exception of the screens, was similar to what it was during that song. They opened up that tour with two songs from their newest album, and then proceeded to go backwards in chronological order, ending with Working Man from their first album, and then even tossing in a couple bars at the very end from "Garden Road", a demo song before Working Man. During this whole regression, the stage started out with a setup like their last tour, and then stage hands would come out in overalls and rearrange the stage so it matched the setups for when those songs were released. The 2nd set of their earlier material consisted of primarily amps piled up on stage, and the stage hands would come out song-by-song and start removing the amps, until it ended with just a couple of amps like they had when they'd play gymnasiums. It was an amazing show, and it felt magical, as if you were slipping further and further back in time.

To quote another great song by a phenomenal band, majorly inspired by Rush yet sounding nothing like them::
    I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them fall away
    Mildewed and smouldering
    Fundamental differing
    Pure intention juxtaposed
Will set two lovers' souls in motion
    Disintegrating as it goes
    Testing our communication🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🥁🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼

I saw 11 shows on this last tour. I knew it would be the last time seeing them & I am so glad I did it. Wish I could have seen more shows but……..
This was a treat to hear 11 times in 2015 because before this tour they had only played this song live on one other tour.

Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite live performances. I love the dark vibe to this song! So atmospheric (which makes sense, because it describes rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds). If you haven't already reacted to it, I suggest checking out the opening to the R30 tour 'Best Intro Ever'.

Most of those diamonds have probably never seen the ground; just a laboratory. There's nothing wrong with that, but the price difference is immense (and no one could spot the difference): 4-carat natural diamond would be at least five to eight times a lab-grown equivalent, often significantly more for the best ones.
