Wow. I LOVE me some RUSH - from day one. But come on. I'll just throw out Gentle Giant - another Prog 70's band. Bass player's playing violin and Trumpet, and Key player's playing cell, Keys, AND.... a kick-ass Vibraphone (xylophone) solo. Not taking anything from RUSH, but there are many bands/artists with tremendous talent. Here's a link to Giant. = ruclips.net/video/UhWDkUSilZI/видео.html

What amazes me of this performance is that Alex & Geddy are around 27 or 28 years old here and Neil is around 28 or 29 years old, all masters of their instruments at such a young age. No matter how many times I've watch this, I am blown away each time. Alex and Geddy are playing their double neck guitars, each utilizing both necks for this song, plus they each play the foot pedals and Geddy also plays keyboards/synthesizers, Neil is absolutely killing it with his drums and percussion. Simply astounding!

I, 63 and been a big Rush fan since high school. I am a guitarist and had a drummer I met introduce me to Rush in 1977. I never got to see them until 1980 on their Permanent Waves tour and never missed them on tour again. Seen them 31 times and every one was a gem. Best concerts I’ve ever been to. Rush was the only band I never missed when in town.
I feel bad for young people just discovering them on RUclips, who will never get to see them live. Seeing Rush was an experience, especially for any musician. I would see thousands of drummers in the audience air-drumming on every fill. Rush is so detailed oriented, but they have to be. I heard Geddy once say that their fans know every note and beat of every song so we’ll, that they let them know about it if they change anything or make a mistake, but they make very few or no mistakes live.
You know how you kind of expect a lot of screw ups when you’re watching a band live, but these guys make fewer mistakes than any other band I have seen. They take on so much more than most musicians, especially Geddy, who I swear has two more brains hidden in that nose. One for each instrument he’s playing and singing with.
The man is just a legend. Some people complain about Geddy’s voice, but one thing I can say is that at least he has great intonation. He could hit every note, not going off key, like a lot of the so called “greater singers” who often hit sour notes live.
Until he got in his sixties, he could hit every note perfectly and hold on the big notes for a long time. At least he didn’t cop out on the big notes by holding the mic out to the crowd letting them sing the big notes. Whenever I see some singer do that, I know that they’re copping out on those notes knowing that the stupid crowd will think that’s cool, letting them sing the difficult part.
Not me, I paid to see the singer hit the same notes they captured in the studio in a live setting, separating the men from the boys. It’s easier to hit the glory note when you can take as many different takes as you want at it and just punch it in.
That’s because many of those have been screaming, not singing and damaging their vocal cords. Rush played for over three hours and Geddy sounded great all night. Because he was singing, not screaming, he didn’t damage his voice by the end of the night. He never let the crowd sing the hard parts, he mans up and belts it out.
If I just wanted to hear myself sing the damned song, I’d save my money and just stay home singing into my razor or hairbrush. I know I can’t hit those big notes and I wonder about those singers that hold out the mic for the crowd? Can they even hit the note without 21 tries at it? Yet they’re the kind of singers that idiots are saying sing better than Geddy does.
Instead of singing along, I wish the crowd would just boo the asshole instead. Don’t they realize that the singer is just cheating? I certainly don’t want to hear 10,000 flat, out of tune drunk and high audience members sing to biggest notes of some band’s most famous song? Somehow, those brain dead morons think that is so awesome. That would be like Michelangelo handing a bystander the hammer and chisel to finish the face of the sculpture?

    Three geniuses in one band!
Geddy and Alex have been best friends since they met in junior high school when they were 13 and playing music together since they were 16.
They were introduced to each other by a fellow named Steve Shutt who became a NHL hockey player and won numerous Stanley cups. Quite the alumni at that school!
Neil was an avid reader and he wrote most of the lyrics.
If you love storytelling and incredible musicianship you have come to the right band!
They also liked to have fun. They took their music but never themselves seriously.
To see their brotherhood please react to Dinner with Rush. A "business " meeting where the wine and the jokes were flowing.
Also, 2112 the comic book version for more amazing story telling.

Hello, friend! Inscrevendo-me, agora.

fans who know the group beyond the "hits" like Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Spirit of Radio, consider this the seminal song that defines Rush for them(this or 2112). It is songs like this that had me attending 17 Rush concerts over the years, which pales in comparison to some people I know have been to well over 100 shows!

The song is base on a poem by Samuel Coleridge. Xanadu is the capital city of paradise Kubla Khan built. The protagonist is in search of immortality and discovers it. A thousand years have come and gone and the human race has died out. All that's left of his pleasure dome palace are memories. The palace now is cold and lonely as the protagonist walks the caves of ice. The moral of the story is, "be careful what you wish for". The ending instrumental as it slowly ticks down is a reference to the end of the world.

It's a pretty emotional track and another great example of Rush making a song out of a delicate subject, but knowing exactly how to make it impactful for the listener. I'm glad you're focusing on the quality of the composition. There's no doubt that these three were all virtuoso masters of their instruments, but the evocative nature of the music they created is just untouchable. I urge you to compare Rush to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, another three piece band from the 70s; they were also virtuoso musicians. However, what sets them apart (apart from Rush's longevity) was the consistent compositional quality of Rush's music. It was, and remains, far and away the better. And that's why, even though the 70s were a golden age of rock 'n roll, Rush remains relevant in ways that few of the bands of their era did.

Check out the studio album version sometime.
As for how they came up with it, Neil liked to read and came up with bits of lyrics and Geddy and Alex would jam and come up with pieces that they could put together and eventually they'd hash it all out and the professor would figure out his drumming and things would go back and forth and eventually they'd have a masterpiece. And then other times they'd put a song together in a fairly short period of time (a few hours or a day or two) and it would also be a masterpiece. But they'd also been at it for many years too so they had some chops by then...

Wow is right. Sometimes the art renders us speechless, especially when delivered live and in such a spectacular fashion. Your insights about the music are interesting and on point, as at this stage of the game (1981) they were transitioning from writing about fantasy to science, something that was interestingly also being played out in terms of music technology worldwide (the advent of the synth and the shift towards the digital age). Their themes would continue to reflect the music and vice versa. Just gods. RIP x🥁🥁

This song was inspired by a Romantic era poem by Samuel Coleridge Taylor called "Kubla Khan." Neil Peart, their drummer, was the band's lyricist. This song is on their album "A Farewell To Kings," which was my introduction to Rush way back when I was just a wee lad. You ought to react to the last song on Side 2 of this album, "Cygnus X-1," a song about a journey to a black hole. Well how can THREE people produce such a rich sound? Let me give you an example. At 9:11 where comes the synth from? Well Geddy plays the bass and is steppin on the pedal synth while singin...I call that mastermind! And if you didn't notice, from the moment Alex plays his solo, Geddy changes from bass to electric guitar (the lower neck) til the song ends. You HAVE to watch this several times to notice all the genious sh... going on haha. And the drummer wrote almost all of their awesome lyrics (that's why he's called the Professor). Camera angles back in the 80's weren't what rhey are today, plus Rush don't like to "show off" even when that is impossoble at times lol.
Fast forward nearly 25 years to their R30 tour (2004) and they played an abridged version of Xanadu where we get to see rare overhead footage of pedal work.
Check out Geddys work from 2 minute mark tapping out notes on the Taurus pedals.
    ruclips.net/video/Vxvfukte-08/видео.htmlsi=D5SJHjYQOUVf0y88
And THIS is why Rush stands alone as a band, refusing to add a 4th member to ease the sheer stress of live performance.
Blows my mind everytime. All 3 guys use pedals at various points during their live shows and we rarely get to see it.
