I think this performance in total is very hard to be exceeded or that any three member band could pull out in lkive something like this. And even many of those people who don't like this kinda of progressive rock music, do appriciate the talent of this band. Often on some song the lyrics are quite meaningless or too mundane, but RUSH did never fell to that with any of their songs. And only after I saw before Neil Peart passed away his interview and as he was telling that this Ayn Rand and her philosphy had made him the biggest impact as lyricist I understand why it all came together as it was.

@@guaporeturns9472that's true, except there is one small overdub at the beginning. 😊 They overdubbed the birds chirping (which were actually Neil Peart's pet birds), I am guessing because the birds couldn't be bothered to come to rehearsal and learn their parts and the cue. True story, well except for the part after "I am guessing ...." 😅😂

Xanadu in this song refers to a secret place of paradise hidden in the Himalaya mountains. It is special because time stands still there, If you can find the hidden paths to enter Xanadu you will live forever as long as you don't leave. The catch is first the time of day you enter is way it will stay for as long as you are there. In the song it is always night, Second because time stands still there is no change ever. Again in the song it tells how the stars are stuck in the sky never moving. The end result is a slow descent into madness. The moral of the song is" Be careful what you wish for " and accept your mortality and simply enjoy the time given to you.

It is also based on Kubla Kahn, a famous unfinished poem about Xanadu by Samuel Coleridge. While high on opium he dreamt up this poem. Upon waking he was able to recall and write down three stanzas, but was unable to finish the poem in it's entirety - a fitting end to an attempt to describe utopia/perfection - because perfection can never be achieved ;-). Cements the genius of Neil Peart - what a topic to write a song about.

A lot of bands do not sound as good as RUSH does live, that's why I typically prefer studio versions for reactions. But RUSH is the exception, they would not record anything that could not be reproduced live. The other really awesome thing about RUSH is that The 2 guitar players have been best friends since they were 13 years old. The drummer came into the band after the first album but quickly fit in, in his unique way. The guys are hilarious, do not take themselves too seriously... Great people and band, top to bottom.

Xanadu has always been my favorite Rush song, I wore out several cassette tapes of Exit Stage left, the album that this video was filmed for. People must realize that there are only 3 people in this band and there are no backing tracks to help them because they insist on playing everything live. Alex plays the 6 and 12 string double neck while Geddy has the Base and 12 string. I found the use of heavy rock chords with a 12 string very unique and what is lost in this video is how they use Moog Taurus pedals along with all the other instruments they handle. This song is timeless, hearing it live is incredible, the floor rumbles and the synth hits your entire body, no way to describe, you have to feel it.

I remember hearing Geddy say circa 1980 that Xanadu was the song that best represented what Rush was all about. A Farewell to Kings was the first album I heard not long before then. Rush has always make music to match their unbelievable stories or messages...this Magical composition, Xanadu, a place where you can live for ever and then, as the story tells, deeply regret it, simply puts you in a trance from beginning to end, building up this awesome atmosphere , as I understand it, as the character takes off on this journey to reach that immortal place which, at the end, turns into a prison...Only Rush can make can make something this magnificent and dreamy. I mean, these guys have songs about tress, a car, about life in the spotlight, about the radio, about a thunderstorm, Designs, Big Money, about feeling out of place when growing up, and so many....They shaped my life and learned from Neil`s lyrics more than I ever did in school or University. Their catalog for over 45 years, staying together as a band is a testament for everyone to hear, to see and to guide you through this complicated world we live in. These are the three most talented musicians I have ever come across and have been listening to them since they came out from Toronto, Canada...They are, simply put, The Best Band ever.

If you notice the three sections of this song is future (looking forward to xanadu), present (knee deep in it), and past (having regrets). It's the metaphorical "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". Rush is always telling a story and their music is simply there to make it more dynamic... kind of like an orchestra during a play. Red Barchetta is one of the best. Lifeson actually makes his guitar sound like squealing tires. Really digging your vids.

I may be repeating someone else's correction, but the lyric is "searching for the lost Xanadu" not "last Xanadu." Honest mistake. My favorite part of this reaction is Asia's face when she's trying to comprehend the magnitude of what she's hearing and seeing. It's the look people have when their mind is being expanded, like when a child starts to understand math. The first time I heard this song, it was only 3 years old and two years before this performance and I guarantee you I had the same expression on my face. Many years later, I had the privilege of seeing them perform this song live along with my son, who is a musician and able to appreciate the extent of their talent. I have seen a lot of live performances in person since my first one in 1976, but Rush tops them all by a wide margin. Geddy Lee had lost his upper range, but it didn't matter, he dropped an octave and still had the same power. Alex, Neil, and Geddy were at the same peak as they were in 1981.

"Are y'all hearing what I'm hearing?" Heh. I actually said out loud to the TV, "Oh, honey, I've been hearing it for forty years." ✌️😎 Yeah, you better eat your Wheaties and do your homework and take your vitamins and say your prayers before you try putting together a piece of music like this, much less pulling it off at that high a level absolutely live. This is Rush during a brief slice of time where Geddy Lee had become fully involved with keyboards, but Neil peart's drum set was still 100% acoustic. That would change two years from the release of this video. This is from "Exit Stage Left," the greatest and most revered of their several live albums, which by default makes it one of the greatest live albums in rock history.
I wasn't at this concert, but believe it or not, I saw it on MTV one Saturday night, back when the M still stood for "music." Can you believe there was a time in living memory when MTV would play a complete Rush concert?

This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy!
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

    A lot.
    -
To seek the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
To break my fast on honey dew
And drink the milk of paradise
I had heard the whispered tales
    Of immortality
    The deepest mystery
From an ancient book, I took a clue
I scaled the frozen mountain tops
    Of eastern lands unknown
    Time and man alone
    Searching for the lost, Xanadu
    Xanadu
To stand within the pleasure dome
    Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste anew the fruits of life
    The last immortal man
To find the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
Oh, I will dine on honey dew
And drink the milk of paradise, oh, paradise
A thousand years have come and gone
But time has passed me by
    Stars stopped in the sky
    Frozen in an everlasting view
Waiting for the world to end
    Weary of the night
    Praying for the light
    Prison of the lost, Xanadu
    Xanadu
    Held within the pleasure dome
    Decreed by Kubla Khan
    To taste my bitter triumph
    As a man, immortal man
    Never more shall I return
    Escape these caves of ice
For I have dined on honey dew
And drunk the milk of paradise, whoa, paradise

Rush has been my favorite band since I was 13. I'm 52 now. I've seen them 7 times live. My first concert was the Presto tour in 1990 in Englewood, CO. The last was their 40th anniversary tour in Seattle, WA in 2015. My favorite was their 30th anniversary tour in Frankfurt, Germany in 2004. I'm 50% Ethiopian, 25% Mexican, 12.5% Scotch, 12.5% Irish......but my favorite bane is 100% Canadian (not referring to thier genetic make-up of course).

I was in a Rush Tribute for 25 years called Animation, and I can tell you, the concentration level is very high! You didn't even get to see what they were doing with their feet! Moog Taurus pedals, that make an extremely Phat bass sound. I was doing Geddy's part, playing bass, keyboards, pedals and all the lead vocals, so you can imagine the concentration. We played about 9 1/2 hours of Rush at one point. If you get a chance, check out Animation a tribute to Rush on RUclips. We do the whole album Hemispheres, as well as a whole bunch of other stuff. Peace out!!

Does anyone else amaze at the orchestral crescendo finale that they tacked on into this at the end?
An Orchestra of 3! Absolutely Brilliant.
I am a life RUSH Fan - through and through since 1980… and I’ve seen them over 5 times, including with my son… so I like all eras of the band… but…
The more I hear this 1981 (I 1st saw the same song/Tour in Detroit that year) show… I increasingly feel this was a pinnacle sound, era, and performance of even their highest achievement.

Reminder: That "wall of sound," those tremendous and integrated tones and instruments, all of it were created and performed (and live) by just three people! The best ever; no question. And their performances accentuate each other perfectly; go back to the guitar solo at the end and listen to how the drums and cymbal crashes follow and enhance, rather than drown, the guitar solo. It is rock as symphonic performance. Rush's music was and remains intelligent music for intelligent listeners.

Asia's facial reactions make watching Xanadu for the millionth time a joy once again. 🙂 And it is going to be the anniversary of this recording on the 27th of March. "Thank you very much Montreal; Good Night!"
I could geek out endlessly about all the little moments that make this performance so wonderful..... Here are a few that I think deserve honorable mention.
Neil hits his kick drum SO hard....and the accuracy, speed and power of the concert tom fill at 1307 is magnificent. It is even more magnificent if you listen at half speed.....
He obviously spent a lot of time constructing and arranging his kit not only to be playable for him but also visually appealing for the audience. That perfect rosewood finish and brass rims.... The cage with the triangles and wood blocks and bell trees...the placement of the concert toms over two timbales and a glockenspiel placed just above the timbales and below the concert toms......and the cherry on top.... the tubular bells...lol. Just the right amount of overkill.
The lighting..... good old Par 64 cans. After Rush started headlining their own shows they developed a reputation for their light show. Theatrical, moody, expressive, all done with simple fixtures that were thoughtfully positioned and focused, and with excellent gel color choices. I find this type of show (also Pat Benatar's lighting on the live Shadows of the Night...Loverboy live in Vancouver in 82, Journey live in 81....) to be so much more interesting and evocative than the new fangled moving trusses and LEDs that blind more than they illuminate or create moods.
Geddy's synthesizer...... today, a MIDI cable allows one keyboard press to effortlessly trigger any array of other synths and their sounds, a drum machine, a sequencer..... a backup vocal.... 1s and 0s moving down a single cable.
But in the late 70s and early 80s, analog synths couldn't do that, UNLESS you invented your own way to step on a Moog Taurus pedal synth and direct the voltage from the foot pedal into the proper place on the Oberheim synthesizer in order to play its sound (the Taurus voltage signal substituting for pressing a key on the Oberheim).
In this instance, the Taurus patch (sound) on high octave setting plays that note and triggers the low sound of the Oberheim starting at 7:27, then he changes the pre set on the Taurus to Variable in the high octave setting to play the part starting at 7:35. Same low Oberheim roar but this time with the 'tweety' top patch (sound) of the Taurus pedals. So in addition to the much mentioned 'singing and playing bass and foot pedals at the same time!' he is also changing patches on the fly (as is Alex).
[this is what I meant by all the little moments one could geek out to....]
And analog synths were a lot less stable and reliable than later digital synths, so the sheer logistics of keeping his system up and running night after night, tear down, set up, tear down, set up.... keeping them all in tune.... That in itself is a work of art, as was your reaction.

Just a little tidbit but it was their original drummer's brother Bill Rutsey who came up with the name Rush. Legend has it that it was in the basement of the Rutsey family at a rehearsal in mid 1968. It was a reference to the energy of the music.
May I suggest you check out another older Rush song: "Cinderella Man" from 1977 and the album A Farewell To Kings.

Really enjoyed this reaction. Especially loved your description of the song as “impeccable” and “like watching Picasso paint”. Perfectly said! There is a reason Xanudu is the very first song on my Rush playlist. It exemplifies the construction of the mighty bridge between 2112 and Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures better than any song I feel. Would love to see your reaction to the two towers to that bridge - both The Trees and their greatest instrumental La Villa Strangiato.

Playing a piece of music this complicated without a mistake is remarkable to we normal humans, but not for Rush. When they recorded the song, they played it just once, and that's what's on the album. The technicians at the recording studio were stunned.
Another great song is "La Villa Strangiato," which was inspired by a dream the guitarist Alex Lifeson had. The album version is good, but I prefer the alternate version they recorded for the music video.

I highly recommend checking out Entre Nous by Rush (the live version from Snakes and Arrows). Just like this video, you have Geddy Lee playing bass, keyboards and singing. Neil Peart is still surrounded on all sides by his drum kit. And Alex Lifeson has the electric guitar strapped to his shoulder and an acoustic guitar set up in front of him that seamlessly transitions to several times during the song.
Another one is Closer to the Heart, the live version from Different Stages.
    Thanks for the Rush reactions.

Watching your reaction and hearing what this music does your soul has brought me back to the first time I heard this. I started listening to the studio version of this song. But listening to how they've added a few more of those paint brush strokes in their live performance since the studio version is uplifting and it's making this new. The tempo is quite different in this live performance. The studio version had an overall faster tempo. A few things to look for the next time you watch this. In the beginning when Neil is playing the wind chimes ( I think they're called), watch How he establishes and keeps time with the bell chimes. That nice resident bell sound that you hear. He's playing everything else but he's got that wind chime right on its point. It's the first time any type of rhythm is introduced to the song. I know I'm going on and on so I'll just end this with one thing. Even when Neil is seemingly not playing and the music seems to take a break, he's still playing and doing things. You would think that the drummer would be sitting back waiting for his next time to play but no, he's working back there on other percussion instruments. One more thing about Neil, the reason why he can pull it together and you feel that overall groove even when he's off hitting other instruments is because Neil has that BackBeat in his mind. He might take a measure or two to get back to it but when he does he brings it right there. This is what holds your interest and is the glue that holds this whole piece together. Really all of Rush's pieces.

Incredible band at their absolute peak in this performance. I was a frequent concert goer in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Conservatively saw 50 shows from most major bands in that 10 year window.
Saw Rush twice. Different experience from most other bands. Most had one or two members that were doing the most amazing things. Keeping focused on them I didn’t miss much.
Seeing Rush live, my attention kept getting pulled from one to another to the third and back again. All three were absolutely riveting to watch. Each doing remarkable things. I finally settled on avoiding focus on any one of them and just taking in the whole.
Their instrumental set up was fascinating. Neil Peart’s drum kit unlike anyone else with every conceivable percussion instrument. Geddy and Alex with the double necks. Geddy also singing and playing synths with hands AND FEET!
My first response was “come on, just for show?” Wrong-used it all in the first few songs.
Three incredible talents, yes, but also joined in a three way musical mind meld. Redefined the term “tight.”

Definition of Xanadu: an idealized place of great or idyllic magnificence and beauty. Yes I'm hearing what you're hearing. I've been listening to Rush since 1974. BTW, Geddy was not just playing the 4 string bass and synth, and singing, but also (as you noticed he had a double neck guitar, similar to Alex), but his had a 6 string electric guitar on the bottom neck. He played "rhythm guitar" while Alex "did his thing!". If you look closely, you can see Geddy doing power chords on his electric, instead of plucking his bass as is the norm. A very complex song. But in simple speak, IT'S ONE F$*KING amazing epic song. Love that you guys love our greatest gift that, even without Neil with us anymore, keeps on giving! Cheers from the home of Rush 🇨🇦!!!!

I got CLOSE to the '81 tour - at an Oakland A's/Red Sox game in Oakland. Rush was playing THIS tour in the Coliseum Arena the same Friday night the Sox were in town, which was a bad combo because they were one of the few teams that could fill the stadium. So the shared parking for the stadium & arena was a complete zoo, a mixture of rowdy partying Rush fans and baserball fans competing for the same parking. I would attend 3 Rush concerts later, but wasn't quite yet a hardcore fan in '81. Will forever miss not going there instead of the ballgame!

There was a double neck guitar and a double neck bass, Alex on the guitar. Guitarists did that when they wanted different guitar sounds AND it would have been too hard to flick a switch on the guitar or hit a petal to throw in a different effect on the guitar, so basically they have two guitars set up for different sounds all in one guitar. The problem is those things are heavy so it's not something a guitarist preferred or prefers to do.
With all the sound they were producing in that song though both the guitarist and bassist needed it.

I love a lot of music, particularly rock music but Rush are on a totally different level compared to everyone else & are easily the best 3 piece rock outfit ever. I doubt you'd get may people disagreeing with that.
This was recorded at a time when bands really had to create all their sounds on stage, in real time, which is why you see them sporting double neck guitars, bass pedal synthesizers (basically synths played with their feet) & Neil Peart's drum kit, which at that time, had balooned to a full orchestra percussion set, to recreate all the ambiance you pointed out.
Geddy Lee, the singer, plays bass, sings, keyboards & bass pedal taurus moog pedals all at the same time. It is quite unbelievable how he multi-tasked all of that.

Xanadu is a summer palace or heavenly paradise like palace in China (or was long ago) north of Beijing in Mongolia - back in history there was Genghis Khan and Kubla Khan - author and poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote poems/ writings about Kubla Khan and Xanadu - also Xanadu is mentioned in the famous movie "Citizen Kane" by Orson Wells as the large mansion in the film is called Xanadu - Billionaire Bill Gates also named one of his mansions/houses Xanadu 2.0 and that is a real story - Xanadu was also used as a movie title of course "Xanadu" with the Late Olivia Newton John (Of "Grease) in it.
