That's Alex Lifeson on the guitar, one of the most underrated guitarists of all time!
Absolutely! I have been saying that for many years!
When you're in a band with the number one drummer and a top ten bassist, getting underrated is just par for the course. He's still really good.
Only under rated by those who don’t know just how great he is. Rush army knows his greatness
IMHO-The reason is; He is the unfortunate odd man out. You have Neil Peart, who is in the running for GOAT drummer. Geddy Lee is lead vocals. Who is the de facto front man. But, I agree he is the most under rated rock guitarist.
Preach. He's top 5 all day for me. Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's Mcgee is my #1 though
Eddie Van Halen was once asked, "What's it like to be a guitar god?". He replied, "I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson".
Best answer. That's awesome.
It's amazing that much sound is coming out of just three dudes. Love Rush since 1976
Best reaction, emoctionally, to something HISTORICAL. Thanks
One of the greatest live song performances by a rock band ever.
Alex's guitar tone and performance here is beyond the beyond !
PLEASE keep doing more Rush reactions!! I love seeing your faces when they transition! Natural Science is a great song of theirs if you like all the transitions.....but please do the album version first so you can appreciate the live version! Just a suggestion. My favorite band of all time.....RIP Professor 🥁 Blessed to have seen the 14 times live!!🎶🎸🥁🎶❤️
My bad, didn't realize you already did Natural Science. But in that case, Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato. 🎸🎶🥁❤️😁
I agree, they also need to be focused on what the lyrics and song is about. Maybe the lyrical version or cartoon storybook that explains this beautiful story. Good reaction overall.
24 shows for me as well…, BUT I was fortunate enough to have seen this very tour In Montreal as well. I couldn’t believe they wrre actually playing the whole piece with the guitar improv after Temples…I was completely moved to tears throughout Alex’s entire performance; it was the most soul touching experience of my life, spoke to me spiritually.
Needless to say, I never forgot that magical night and many years later I would go on to name my son after Alex!
Omg. ❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️
My God, I forget how good of a guitarist Alex is. Rush has always been a huge influence for so many musicians, their creativity always inspired me to explore different genres and creativity. Amazing live performance.
hi guys i'm Manuel from Rome...please, absolutely must see and hear marathon rush live a show of hands 1988, one of the best rush live in my opinion. Enjoy from Rush's fan
I know that one brother
Welcome to one of the greatest songs every created
2112 was the album that really launched them a bit before Moving Pictures, saved their career probably. It's phenomenal as you can tell. Thus live version I hadn't seen before it's awesome. Thank you!
Alex does not get the recognition he deserves! He is awesome! Fire!!!
I saw Rush in concert 18 times since 1981. There was only one concert in all that time that they performed 2112 in its entirety, with all seven parts, This was on the Test for Echo Tour in 1997. Sadly, I attended the concert alone, very much a last-minute ticket purchase, and to this day I regret that none of my best Rush friends were there to see this epic played live!
Any Rush fan can tell you… you can listen to each song many many many times and you will find new things every time. As you were saying your ears switched from Geddy to Alex to Neil… that’s why we love Rush! You listen to Alex play and you hear his virtuoso. You listen to Geddy jamming away on his bass. You get blown away by Neil. But you can hear a different sense of the song by focusing on just one guy at a time. Then you can get a whole different experience by letting the whole sound engulf you. And yet another experience focusing on lyrics… become a lifelong fan of Rush… and it is clear, you can enjoy their music forever! ❤️
1976, 14 year old me. Already a fan of Rush, bought this album on release day. Went home and lost my everlovin' mind. You have to put on headphones and listen to the studio version, close your eyes and just take a journey. I had never heard anything like this before, Rush gave a hint of what was to come on the previous album, Caress of Steel with the songs Fountain of Lamneth.and The Necromancer. (one of my favorite songs.)
Rush live was an experiance. These guys played thier hearts out each time. There was no "going through the motions" for them. You left thier concert knowing that they gave you thier best each time.
Even though they retired after the 2015 tour, there was still hope that there could be some one-off shows, or some new stuff from them. But, sadly it wasn't to be. Neil's passing hit hard, he was such a private person that his illness wasn't known to most. After all he had been through, to have found some happiness in his life, and for it to be taken away from him so early.
I just thank whatever forces of the Universe that brought these three together to form something special. Three Masters of music, that the World may never expeience again. I was blessed to be able to take thier music on my Journey through life, and it still plays a big part of my day.
I've seen alot of reactors, and you've even responded to say thanks.....I always come back to see your genuine excitement and introspection of feelings towards the music! Thanks again, from west coast Canada 🇨🇦, peace.
This is from the Test for Echo tour. It had been awhile since they played 2112 in its entirety. Previous tours had seen them play the first two parts only.
I was at this tour watching them in San Jose. Rush live wakes you up to how much heavier they are live than on their studio discs. There will never be anyone close to them again. Virtuoso performances were guaranteed at any tour date. Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart will never be again. I grew up on Rush from the age of 9 on and now in my early fifties no other band gives you complete satisfaction for every penny you spend to see them live.
These are three master musicians who were so far ahead of their time.
Did you go nuts when you realized they were going to play the whole thing.
You have so much more Rush to discover , And yes you will become addicted …🥰🥰
3 MONSTER solos from Alex. And Geddy just playing the freakin strings off that bass
If only I could hear this for the first time again! RUSH FOREVER!
It the Colin James! The guitarist!
Great to see young people enjoy the music I grew up on!
That was fantastic!! I hadn't seen this live performance before. Alex was on fire! 🔥 💥⚡️
Next I would suggest La Villa Strangiato official music video.
Xanadu from Exit Stage Left
Please do more Rush.
Loving your reactions!! 🧡❤️
Cheers
100%... La Villa Strangiata is jaw-dropping
unbelievable performance. alex in particular, my god he fills that auditorium with his sound. immense.
An all-time rock classic from perhaps the most talented trio ever to play!
Major props for making the effort to use my remaster as your reaction material, that is exactly why I do it, so everyone's first impression with Rush lives up to the quality standards that they deserve!
Alex Lifeson is the most criminally underrated guitarist in history.
The goat
I have to agree- I can’t think of another more moving/expressive guitar moment in rock history than this version of Discovery.
He just pours out his soul into this. Epic!
nothing beats live rush
Saw them play this live 3 times since 1977.
Ditto....Montreal,Glens Falls and Hartford
Your guys reactions are great ..you guys get it …yep i was there… 2nd row ….I’ve seen Rush 7 times and this is the only time they played 2112 in its entirety on this tour……2112 came out in 76 ….you are right on they were the first hard rock prog band and catapulted Rush to the big time this album grew and exploded by word of mouth alone and the 2112 story is timeless
Greatest band ever. Three geniuses in one band. Xanadu. Exit stage left 1981 was a great show.
"2112" was performed for the first time in its entirety on this tour in 1997. It was 20 years since they first recorded it. Also, the Test For Echo Tour was their first tour as "An Evening With", so no opening act. It was just Rush and their fans for about 3 hours. They toured that way all the way up until the end.
and that would be the Test for Echo Tour 97 :) Rock!!
I saw them on this tour at the Starplex Ampitheater in Dallas. The tour was called "An Evening with Rush". No opening act, just Rush doing 2 sets. The first set was side one of 2112. I saw them 4 times in total, but this was my favorite concert. Oh, and Alex's haircut was called the "Caesar". I never wore it personally, but it was popular back in the day.
I was able to witness all the legendary rock groups live
I have enjoyed your reactions to the music of Rush and your authentic reactions of awe. Musically, they are all virtuosos. The music will blow you away. Yet, the lyrics add so much more. In all of their songs there is a message to be gained. Understanding the lyrics adds to much more to the performance. I wish you would revisit some of your reviews again having looked at the lyrics and what the song is trying to say and how the music helps interpret the lyrics. It adds a whole new level to their genius.
Was at this concert, it was Summer 97', at the Molson Amphitheater - first time in a long time they did all of 2112 - so glad you posted this - the concert was on fire as it always is with them!! This was the day after they played it in Montreal, part of the R30 tour - I was there too lol....Neil was on a high and life was great for him but sadly took a massive turn not to long after this as fans know The set list for this concert was beyond comprehension... Neil' drum solo for this concert was phenomenal, first time starting with that THUNDEROUS massive Drum, and echo effect, so cool!!! Same year as THE WHO (Rush' biggest influence) did Quadrophenia at the same venue -that too was mindboggling, with John Entwistle's Bass solo on 5:15, much like hearing Neil do his solo, the crowd literally clapped after that for a minute after he finished in awe!! If these two heard the original Baba O'riley I think they would need to train for that haha....
I saw Rush 4 times in concert, the sound was crystal clear every time. Awesomely talented band.
The greatest love song ever written about a guitar...🤗
Arguably best track ever hilighting our dystopian society
I saw these guys right around that time. Counterparts, Presto and Live in Cleveland. Always the best of jamming shows.
Enjoyed watching both your faces disolve in Alex's guitar phenomenon 😂
i was at this show. happend at the molson amphithater( now the budwieser stage) at the now defunct ontario place. and all i can say is it was a hot and muggy night here in there home town of toronto. first time since 1977 that it was played in its entierty. what a show!
It's super fun watching you two reacting to music I love. You helped me love Jinjer, and hope you keep loving Rush.
I saw this in 97 at Fiddlers Green in Denver. Was not expecting them to play the entirety of 2112, as they usually only ever played the Overture and Temples of Syrinx, and was so incredibly happy that I saw this that I found the tears streaming down my face when Alex went into Discovery
Sorry you two weren’t children of the seventies. This is what we grew up on but great to see you enjoying it as much as we did.
THAT much sound from THREE GUYS? They will always be the best for me...
Huge rush fan I think they are the best band of all time RIP Neil.
Someone asked Eddie Van Halen , how does it feel to be the greatest guitar player in the world ... he said I don't know , ask Alex Lifeson. True story.
2112 was their " Big Breakout " album. Afterwards, they went on through a long string of other very memorable works!!!
I saw that tour in 1997. My very first concert was a Rush concert in 1980 and my very last concert was a Rush concert in 2007. They were always my favorite band live.
You absolutely need to listen to Neil's drum solo live in Frankfurt...you will be cemented in the realization that he is the Maestro!
The drummer wrote those lyrics. All of them.
This album is what happens when true talent tells the suits to get bent and records with full artistic freedom. Rush's +40 year catalog is the result.
So many songs, so little time. I've been going down the Rush road for over 40years now. It's been an awesome ride and I hope I never find an end to that road. You guys are backing out of the garage, enjoy the rest of your ride. Hope it's as rewarding to you as it has been for me and so many others🤘👽
Great reaction to a total Masterpiece! Thank you
Nothing quite like live Rush! Thanks for doing this one!
Try Between the Wheels or Analog Kid live next!
My god, thank you guys so much for this!!! As a long time viewer, I was expecting the day that you would get into Rush! You're in for a treat with them!
May I suggest their more goofy side and with some live improv? Try the combo La Villa Strangiato / By-tor and the snow dog from the R30 show. I'm sure you'll love it!
I like her line "hold my drink and we ll show you what we can s do". In the 70's this album was their last chance recording. They said ok. We re just goina be us make or break.Hhence after 2112, they launched forever.
RIP professor :(
Great reaction, great album, I think that you should find the album version and listen again with the lyrics. This is a great story, that for sure you can't get when listening for the first time.
My God. What was that performance… man!!!!!
this is so so true to the album - if you knew it in your heart the way us old guys do (who saw them live a few times in the 70s!) -- you'd appreciate this a lot more!
Long Live Rush !!! the greatest of the Greats !
You guys did a great job in reacting and analyzing this masterpiece from Rush. Bravo.
Was at Toronto show 1997..phenomenal
the story is as good as the music...loved this since i first heard it at 13
my all time favourite song and album...Rush are absolute maestros of their instruments...I believe this was live at Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. Rush are not just a band nut an experience...I saw them live many times and brought different friends and family members each time...happy birthday Lerxst!!! Go to the live version of La Villa Strangiato...keep on rockin!!!
17:47 watch carefully as The Doctor, on his huge kit, it able to to a cymbal strike followed a beat later (of multiple drum strikes) by a grasp to silence, followed by a beat later crash ... Repeat...
(Edit... You noticed it a minute later...it was amazing)
He was so very humble (proudly Canadian 🇨🇦) but was/is respected by every rock drummer.
Go listen to the studio version, pure classic.
Thank You! You Rock!
I saw them play this live in 1978, Neil Peart also wrote the lyrics to most of their songs. I loved your reactions.
I love this heavy sound ! And neil is beatong yhose drums harder, than i think ive heard b4. !
Yippie! 🥰 More Rush! 😊🐰
My introduction to Rush as a 16yo kid in 1976. Listened to that album 1-2 times a day for 2 weeks.
Oh! By the way, I never recovered.
Rush fan ever since.
Welcome to the Temple of Rush.
Enjoy😄
They were not the originators of prog rock but they carved their own place in the genre and are unique in their style and sound. My favorite prog band after Jethro Tull and Yes is next followed by Genesis. You should check out these bands as well
I commented in your yyz vid about 2112 and found it here.
Try the studio version too. Live is great by all means, the album is just as great, geddys voice and the waterfall cave chapters are trippy.
Although I love watching this video, and listen to the Different Stages album, see Neil captured in that time, and difficult watching knowing that he will soon go through such terrible trauma. It’s a bittersweet watch for me.
But I also know that time goes by, heals some wounds. And they emerge to create the best music they bet made:
This was a great live show but the studio version is so much better imo the guitar and vocals are mixed much better, this live venue seem to have mixed the guitar and drums too low, there's an official version of 2112 with a comic book style music video showing the story.
the whole band is fire.
listen to the studio original...
Neal is a Profit, this song is happening live today...
"We've taken care of everything, the books you read, the songs you sing, the pictures that bring pleasure to your eyes..." "our great computers fill our hallowed halls..."
wish i could time travel to one of these concerts
Music Bliss
2112 was released in 1977. I was too young then so when I got into them in my teenage years I thought I would never see them play this in it's entirety. So when they announced they'd be playing the whole thing on this tour, Test For Echo tour, I was overjoyed. Only downside was it was in the Alamodome set in basketball config. The dome put up a big ass curtain through the middle so half the place was empty. Completely kills the acoustics, but I didn't care. I got to see them play 2112 live and that was all that mattered.
You should see Rush in Rio version...it is amazing...For Those about to Rush! We salute you!
Welcome to the family!!!
Check out “best intro ever” to the spirit of radio. Great live performance. A chronological medley of hits leading into “ the spirit of radio”. Makes me feel like I was there, which unfortunately I was not😞. Keep the Rush reactions coming
There you go guys. Simply one of the best performances ever. See what you’ve been missing out on? Going another direction check out Linda Perry and the song Mighty Lady. Spectacular.
Alex is the best his playing is soooo emotive!
They're called Rush because it's an adrenaline surge!!
So, nothing can be said about 2112 that hasn’t been said already. That song kills, especially when it’s done proper as it was here. Speaking on Alex’s parts(Happy Birthday Big Al 08/27/53)they are all musician’s musicians. They are capable of playing anything, any style, individually or as a band, in most cases better than masters of said genres. That’s what I think anyway.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼
2112 mirrors Ayn Rand's Anthem, in a dystopian future where councils determine your future and profession a street sweeper finds a light bulb and discovers electricity. The parallel is in 2112 the character discovers a guitar. In both instances when they present their discovery to the council or priests of syrinx, they already know about it and reject the character. In the end the character in Anthem runs away and finds a house from the old world and starts a new life and world there. In 2112 the galactic federation assumes control.
2112 is legendary.
Hi guys. I see there may not have been a comment on listening to the studio version to get the context of the whole song which is side one of the album. enjoy when you listen to it and thankyou.
Geddy Lee has stated that Alex has the ability to sound like 2 guitar players playing at the same time, and that he doesn't know of anyone else in the world who can do that...
Imho, one of the greatest guitar compositions ever. Criminally underrated; and every part genius- Alex Lifeson.
AWESOME!!! 😎😎
Their fucking incredible !!!
The Baddest Band in the Land.
